Yay!!!! He’s getting some fun in the sun golfing. Love it. I soooo hope we get to see pictures of President Obama and Mrs. Obama on their date night. Meta said that they have a date night tonight and I hope they have a GREAT time.

  4. August 19, 2011 at 8:59 pm

He needs this time away from the slings and arrows–hope he and his family have a wonderful vacation–bless him

I think we too need a break from the slings and arrows being slung at him. I am looking forward to Aug 28th dedication of the King statue and hearing the President speak. Have a great weekend TOD and TOAITR family!

I won’t link to where I found this (an article at The Boston Herald website, which had a bit of snark in it from some jealous writer), but this part is interesting:

“Last night a posse of Vineyard boldfacers, including Harvard profs Alan Dershowitz and Charles Ogletree; novelists Richard North Patterson and Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks; Rose Styron, the widow of author William Styron, and her daughter Alexandra, author of ‘Reading My Father’; singer Kate Taylor; and DNC Chairwoman and U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Shultz turned out for a $100-a-head fund-raiser dubbed ‘Voices For Obama’ at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs … ”

Love the “Voices for Obama” name for the fundraiser! Also the fact that our wonderful DNC Chair, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Shultz, was in attendance.

    • August 19, 2011 at 9:10 pm

OOoooo, this is interesting and wonderful. That’s sort of a cheap entry for such a high-profile audience! Hope they raised a lot of money and had some fun, too.

    • August 19, 2011 at 9:14 pm

$100 a head isn’t much for that crowd.

        August 19, 2011 at 9:19 pm

No, but the optics are good for Democrats. And all of them give in other ways … and they all just figuratively signed up again to be the Voices of Obama.

Oh, my. Here’s more on the Voices for Obama event:

      http://www.mvtimes.com/marthas-vineyard/article.php?id=7026

Sounds as though it was really well planned and well done.

      • August 19, 2011 at 9:32 pm

Very cool. I didn’t realize that the Obamas only first met Caroline Kennedy in 2008.

        • 27 jacquelineoboomer
          August 19, 2011 at 9:37 pm

Wanna reminisce about Caroline Kennedy’s op-ed in January 2008 called, “A President Like My Father”? Well, here it is:

          http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/27/opinion/27kennedy.html

I think I remember crying when I first read it (being of the JFK generation).

          • August 19, 2011 at 9:40 pm

JO’B, we are both on the same page! This kind of stuff always chokes me up. I was a freshman in high school when JFK was assassinated.

              August 19, 2011 at 9:50 pm

Oh, meta, I was a senior in high school! I remember when he became President, I actually would watch his (humorous) press conferences on TV after school! Was never that enthused again, until candidate Obama came on the scene!

              • August 19, 2011 at 9:53 pm

Exactly, same for me!! I do remember his very distinct sense of humor. He was a very unusual person. I will never forget those days after he was gone. Just incredibly traumatic in so many ways.

                • 31 jacquelineoboomer
                  August 19, 2011 at 10:05 pm

I think it was a full three days of live TV coverage after the assassination, crying every minute of the day, and since we still had a black-and-white TV, it was even more frightening to absorb all that darkness in our young brains. All the traumatic events that happened later in the ’60s, including Bobby and Martin, kind of took some of the poetry out of our lives.

Yes, I was walking across the campus from my voice lesson trying to get to that darn zoology class when I heard the news and we all started crying. I was a sophomore in college. We all have some memories within this family.

                    • August 20, 2011 at 1:35 am

I WAS IN 2ND GRADE AND WAS PUZZLED AS TO WHY ALL THE NUNS RUSHED INTO MY CLASSROOM CRYING…THEN WE WERE TOLD THE NEWS…THAT MEMORY HAS STAYED WITH ME ALL THIS TIME…I WAS BORN AND RAISED ON THE SAME SOUTH SIDE OF CHGO AS OUR FLOTUS!!!!

      • August 19, 2011 at 9:33 pm

So it sounds like it was a ticketed event for $100 per person to hear the speakers. And it doesn’t sound like the President was there at all. I mean he’s on vacation so doesn’t have to be, but it seems like this might have been set-up in the hopes he might make an appearance or something.

        • 35 jacquelineoboomer
          August 19, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Could be. But these folks would probably just pick up the phone and invite him! It’s not a shy group!

        • 36 dotster
          August 19, 2011 at 10:42 pm

The initial reporting was that he would be making an appearance there. Then there came word at 6:30 that the Obamas were in for the night, no outings.

    • August 19, 2011 at 9:28 pm

When I was younger I used to loooooove Richard North Patterson, Michael Crichton, John Grisham, Pat Conroy, etc. but for some reason I could never warm up to James Patterson books but I loved the movies. Either way, I’m loving the whole “Voices for Obama” thing. It’s beautiful and shows the MSM for the liars they are: PBO isn’t losing support, we’re FIRED UP, READY TO GO!!!!!!

I love that fact that our President has so many wonderful, intelligent, great fun-makers, and classy people who know how to celebrate and do it with so much excitement and the media can;t touch them. this had to be well planned. Eat you heart out Mitty.

Holy shit Lisa. You are like my sistah from another mother! We keep finding things that we both absolutely looooove and either I write a comment that you would totally get or you write a comment that I totally get. Plus we both ABHOR and DESPISE Twilight. Hallelujah for small mercies. Now I find out that you loooooooooooooove Michael Crichton, Joh Grisham (who is a fucking genius of an author) and I do like my Patterson’s especially when he co-writes with other authors. You are sooooooooooooo my online soul sistah!!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

      Alan Dershowitz? THAT IS STRANGE.

  6. August 19, 2011 at 9:02 pm

Glad he’s far from the beltway and republican nonsense about his vacation and other things. Did anyone see Tweety tonight? His one segment with the RNC shill and disease, Reince Preibus, almost made me forgive him for spewing the nonsense about whether or not Hillary would have been better.

He took Preibus apart. Is there anyone in the republican party that isn’t a smarmy liar?

  7. August 19, 2011 at 9:04 pm

He also appears to have landed where I usually do, in the sand.

He always plays with his same friend group, Marty Nesbitt etc., can’t remember the other names, but they’re always all there together. I don’t think Michelle golfs. I’ve never heard about it anyway.

No, I have not read where she golfs, however, I do know that she is pretty good with her tennis game and so is POTUS. I would love to see them in a game of tennis. We will have that for our second term of his Presidency.

So nice to see him relax like this. Deserves every second. I hope he gets quiet time to read good books, spends quality time with his beautiful girls, has a date every night with his incredible wife and golfs every damn day if he feels like it. If it were me, I’d take a Sharpie and put a few names on those golf balls, if you know what I mean:)! And smack the crap out of them…

    • August 19, 2011 at 9:30 pm

Good point …..that last one. πŸ™‚ Maybe he at least pretends….even without the name on it.

Hi Desertflower, I think he has received your message already. Look like he was hitting the hell out of some of those balls. You are a beautiful work of intellect in motion, Mr. President. Hit that golf course everyday, and it is fine with all of your TOD Family here.

  11. August 19, 2011 at 9:29 pm

O/T regarding PO’s golf game. Is anyone watching Rachel? Doing some good, informative things tonight…….slimy Koch Brothers tricks among them…….started with good segment of immigration and how ANYTHING the president is for, the Teapublicans are against….showed a number of clips proving her point. Hope she can do an entire show without a snide comment.

Yep, I am watch Rachel right now too…and I was thrilled she mentioned Electiblog’s diary about GOP/Rich dirty tricks. I hope one day Rachel has him on her show…that would be so cool, one of our own on MSNBC!

I think Rachel got the message during the whole DADT/DOMA fight. Twitter backlash became her nemesis. She may have rethought her approach. Sounds like she has been back to doing what I used to tune in for before she started bashing PBO.

I love it also Walking on Sunshine. This is so wonderful to be watching history take place in my golden years. Plus, I love to read also, and I am so elated when he takes the girls to a bookstore. You notice that when they are on a vacation, he always take them to get some books to read while on vacation. I love that about him. Readers, readers, and more readaers. This is such a lovely family we have as our First Family. Keep up the great work, Mr. President.

Hi Utaustinliberal, and thanks for correcting me. I did not mean to make a fool of myself. I hope that Sam will forgive me. I did not know. But I have missed both Fred and Sam and that is why my question came up. But I so appreciate your corrections. Yes, I am feeling better. Eating more small meals, resting more, and trying to keep the stress away. I will keep the grit and fire for PBO. We are in. Still wearing the button. Now trying to find a flag to place in my garden for Sept. with Obama 2012. If you know where I can get one, please let me know. I will dong some searching tonight online as well. Love you UT.

Hi HZ there is NOTHING to forgive, having a name which can be either male or female can be a little confusing online but I can assure you I am ALL WOMAN LOL!!. I’m still here just been busy with the summer vacation – 10 year old sons take up LOADS of time, lol!! We’re all doing fine and I am LOVING all the coverage of President Obama’s bus tour and vacation. Also been writing a lot – I am on the last chapter of my book which so far has taken me 2 years to write.

I am so pleased to hear that you are feeling better, you have been in my thoughts and prayers lately and I am glad you are still wearing your button, I am still in, even wore my Obama t-shirt to a family event last week (believe me that was going deep into enemy terratory and instigated a few discussions as usual but I think I managed to ‘educate’ one of them who expressed an interest that was more than just fox inspired hatred!) I enjoyed the challenge and even my son expressed his surprise at some of the ignorance, in his own quiet way.

Thank you for your kind comments, i have missed you guys too. Love you loads. God bless.

This is funny … dotster mentioned above that the Obama date night would be at the Beach Plum Inn. Check out what the family did on Martha’s Vineyard last year, and you’ll find much of it was repeated in 2011, including the book store and golf course – and their dinner locale:

I’m another one of the Kennedy generation, and it took this long for me to feel about a president like I did about him. I remember where I was and what I was wearing when I heard the news….that is how important that news was. It was my first year teaching, and I was standing in my 6th hour 10th grade English class, leaning against the window, while some students were diagramming sentences on the board. The principal broke in on the PA….remember those…??? and made the announcement. We were all stunned. It was also the day before my 23rd birthday. Not a good day. Yes, we were glued to our TVs all weekend. We watched it over and over and over. A few years ago we went to Dallas to visit our son, and went to Dealey Plaza with him. All the old emotions came bubbling up.
My father was a minister, and he held a memorial service which many churches did. I remember we sang “O God Our Help in Ages Past, Our Hope for Years to Come” I don’t think there was a dry eye in the church.
I feel truly fortunate to have witnessed so much history. And yes, we, as Americans, do come through together. Yes, We Can!
