‘healthy, hunger-free kids’

Detroit Free Press: All Detroit Public Schools students will receive free breakfast, lunch and snacks in an effort to remove the stigma of being from a low-income family.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture program chose Michigan as one of three states to participate in the pilot program. Charter schools and districts in Michigan can participate if at least 40% of students are eligible for public assistance.

“One of the primary goals of this program is to eliminate the stigma that students feel when they get a free lunch, as opposed to paying cash,” said DPS Chief Operating Officer Mark Schrupp. “Some students would skip important meals to avoid being identified as low-income. Now, all students will walk through a lunch line and not have to pay. Low-income students will not be easily identifiable and will be less likely to skip meals.”

Although not required to participate, parents are still being asked to fill out a survey that includes income analysis to ensure that children, schools and the district will continue to receive millions of dollars in benefits and resources from the state and federal governments, as well as private grants. Program funding dependent on the surveys includes tutoring, after-school programs, field trips, technology and equipment, DDOT bus cards, free college testing, enrichment activities and others.

The Community Eligibility Option is among the early reforms enacted under President Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which authorized the USDA to select up to three states to test the option in School Year 2011-12. A main factor in choosing the finalists was the prevalence of high-poverty areas. The option will be offered to more states in successive years, and will be available to all states beginning School Year 2014-15.

Thank you BWD 😉

I like this news. I had dinner with two lovely friends last evening. We were talking about our President and his Cabinet. during the evening one of my dinner guest who is very involved with another important aspect of labor, education, health, and seniors shared something that was very interesting with us. He was saying how being in a very important meeting in Washington with one some very high profile people within the Administration are very much listening to the people and their concerns. He shareed how these people are very respectful of each others departments and they are very active in pulling the needs of each department that is appropriate to work for the whole person. They listen and then try to find ways to pull resources together within each department to work on the peoples needs, and that they are very serious about this working plan. It was very encouraging to see the different departments working together and not wasting time or money in order to meed the needs that are out there. However, the MSM is not reporting it,so they have to go out and participate in settings like the one that he was in to get the needs of the people moved forward in the manner that the President and his team want. It was vvery enlighting and very good. this program reminded me of some of the conversation that we had last evening. Oh,, and the dinner was delicious. Great company as always.

That’s such great news HZ. I remember watching the news a while back and the pundits were complaining that unlike other administrations, this administration was very loyal to each other, they worked very well with each other, there wasn’t any infighting and back biting. They also observed that the people working in the administration are very loyal to President Obama and it was very hard to get insider information from them and when they did get insider information, it would be vague and not as juicy as the previous two administrations. It was fun watching the pundits get frustrated. Yay! for the Obama team.

Thank you! I was trying to remember how and when this money got appropriated. Thanks to FLOTUS and Rep. Pelosi for their work.

This is wonderful news. Maxine Waters, Smiley and West need to be aware of this. Of course they probably won’t count this, because PBO is actually acting on behalf of the entire United States.

What a wonderful program, my kids qualified for reduced school lunches in the district my husband taught in and they were always self conscious about it. I’m so glad for all the children that will benefit from this. Special thanks to FLOTUS too.

Thank you President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Speaker Pelosi (yes, she is still speaker in my mind), Harry Reid and others who worked on this legislation. These people get down and do the hard work while some in the CBC, some other democrats, and the GOP get in front of the media and flap their gums spewing crap.

You are there to get things done for all Americans.

Jobs, Healthcare, and Education Resources for the African American Community
President Obama is deeply committed to securing the future prosperity of the African American community, whether through investing in underserved communities or closing education achievement gaps. In accordance with the Administration’s vision, winning the future for African Americans means addressing the community’s specific needs with the right resources. To bring economic relief and equal opportunity, the following list contains resources and websites we’d like to highlight–resources that promote job creation, increase access to higher education, and help out in healthcare coverage.

Spurring Jobs and Small Businesses: In these difficult economic times, reducing unemployment and a balanced approach to deficit reduction is at the top of our list. A key role to turning the economy around is investing in small businesses in underserved, low-income areas:
