putting veterans back to work

President Obama is greeted by Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, at the Washington Navy Yard, Aug. 5

AP: President Barack Obama is asking Congress to approve new initiatives to help some of America’s 1 million unemployed military veterans find work, including tax credits for companies that hire out-of-work vets.

… The main features of Obama’s proposal, according to administration officials, are two tax credits for companies that hire unemployed veterans:

— A “Returning Heroes” tax credit for 2012-2013. Companies that hire unemployed veterans would receive a $2,400 tax credit. That tax credit would increase to $4,800 if the veteran has been unemployed for six months or more.

— A two-year extension of the “Wounded Warriors” tax credit, which gives companies that hire veterans with service-related disabilities a $4,800 credit. If the veteran has been unemployed for six months of more, the tax credit increases to $9,600.

The tax credits would require congressional approval. Administration officials said the White House would start working with lawmakers on the proposal after Congress returns from its recess in September.

… During his remarks Friday, Obama also will challenge private companies to hire or train 100,000 veterans by the end of 2013. He is expected to name some companies that already have committed to taking part in that effort.

The president also will announce a joint initiative between the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments to come up with a “reverse boot camp” program that would help train service members for the civilian workforce as they wind down their time in the military.

    Welcome Back, Chips

Hope you had a great vacation. Wonderful to see all of the threads that you have already produced so early, you ROCK, girl.
We are so blessed to have a president who can walk and chew gum at the same time. As he always says. ” the presidency requires that one must be able to do more than one thing at a time.” While the national media focuses on only one thing, the president has all of these balls in the air representing so many different problems or needs that require solutions and he and his increidble staff are quietly working on them and moving them forward to the benefit of all. His Crow name, “He who cares for people all over the land”, should be changed to” He who sees far and gets much done.” His list of accomplishments is already 10 pages long and counting. PBO has the audacity to get s*** done in the face of nation-destroying obstruction and what one poster once referred to as “presidenting while black.” Many people here and around the world see this; I have no fears about the outcome of the coming election. When the tea party politicians make these egregious moves and attacks on workers, they seem to forget that these people, their family and friends vote. No matter what party one may officially belong to, the GOP has adversely affected them. They see that the only champion that we have is President Barack Hussein Obama and I know that they will remember this come election time.

These are the kinds of things people who scream “Why aren’t all the troops home NOW?!?!” don’t concern themselves with, but that a President must. We will see who really is patriotic and who really supports our military (not just the contractors, but the soldiers themselves).

Thank goodness we have a President and an Administration that understands that when men and women are sent into battle, one has to not only think of them when they are overseas but one also has to have plans for medical care, rehabilitation, benefits, mental health care and yes jobs. Republicans like to scream and holler that we have the greatest military in the world, but they don’t like to back their claims with action that helps the military in all situations. I hope Boehner doesn’t let the teabaggers in his party derail this job initiative because it would be a disgrace and they would be rightfully called out for their unpatriotic intransigence.

yup. it was the same thing with the 9/11 responders. talking about how they were heros but wouldn’t cough up the dough for them to get meds and treatment for the illnesses they contracted as a result of their heroism. Bastards.

We all understand, but apparently the baggers do not care about our soldiers. These so called Americans who serve in the house and senate, do not give a whit about anyone at this point. The only thing they care about is destroying PBO. That is it. Nada!

utaustinliberal, I fear there are no longer any sane repubs in the house and senate. They have all become baggers. What I do not understand is, surely not all R voters are teabaggers. If that is true, it may be good for our side during the 2012 election.

For all those who wonder how fun President Obama’s birthday party was, according to obamafoodorama it was a blast!!! πŸ˜€ Here goes:

Yes, they did the Electric Slide: Stevie Wonder, Chris Rock, Jay Z, Charles Barkley, Tom Hanks, Emmitt Smith, Grant Hill, Whoopi Goldberg, and other celebs dine and dance with the President and First Lady…
President Obama and his A-list pals danced barefoot in the dramatically lit Rose Garden to celebrate his milestone 50th birthday on Thursday night, Obama Foodorama was told by guests who attended the “fabulous” but “casual” five-hour barbecue for more than 200 people.

Stevie Wonder gave a “surprise” performance during the celebration; his hit “You and I” was the President and First Lady Obama’s wedding song. Revelers included Jay Z; Tom Hanks; Chris Rock; hoops legends Charles Barkley and Grant Hill; Whoopi Goldberg; Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith; and actor Hill Harper. He’s one of the President’s closest chums from Harvard law school, and star of CSI: NY. Jazz great Herbie Hancock and his ensemble played; R & B singer Ledisi dazzled the crowd.

The night was balmy, and when dinner was done, a DJ spun dance tunes–“like at a Bar Mitzvah,” said one guest. The twenty tables for ten in the Rose Garden were pushed aside so guests could dance, led by the President and Mrs. Obama.

“‘I’m going to challenge you all to dance,’ the President said, and everyone did,” said the guest.

That’s when everyone’s shoes came off, and things kicked into high gear with barefoot jammin.’ Among other dances, guests did the Electric Slide, which impressed Chris Rock so much he tweeted about it:

“Just left the Presidents birthday party at the White House. Herbie Hancock played, Stevie Wonder sang and yes they did the electric slide. A great night.” Rock wrote (sic).

The celebration was a family affair, too: Obama daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10, mingled with the grown-ups under the watchful eyes of their grandmother, Mrs. Marian Robinson, and their godmother, Eleanor “Mama Kaye” Wilson.

The guests toasted the President throughout the night. Also on hand to mark the Presidential milestone were former governors Bill Richardson and Tim Kaine, and Mr. Obama’s staunchest allies in the debt battle–Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Senior White House staff also celebrated: Chief of Staff Bill Daley, Cecelia Munoz, John Brennan, and Valerie Jarrett. Mrs. Obama’s former Chief of Staff, Susan Sher, flew in from Chicago, as did two of the President’s closest pals: Dr. Eric Whitaker, University of Chicago Hospital Vice-President, and The Parking Spot President and CEO Marty Nesbitt. Campaign fundraiser Andy Spahn was spotted, too.

    On the menu…
There was “not a tie in sight” for the birthday dinner, according to one guest; men wore light summer-weight button downs and trousers, and women were attired in summer dresses–many taking their fashion cue from Mrs. Obama, and going sleeveless. Dinner was grilled chicken and steak, and Chicago-style hot dogs, with salad made with fresh greens plucked from Mrs. Obama’s Kitchen Garden, as well as vegetable sides, accompanied by American wines. Tables were covered with simple gray cloths, and anchored by sprays of yellow flowers and greens. There was birthday cake, of course, and pie.

Party favors for departing revelers were tucked into small black paper shopping bags with a shining gold Presidential seal on one side. The President and Mrs. Obama paid for the party out of their own pockets, according to a White House aide.

The politically unfortunate optics of throwing a big 50th birthday party for President Obama when his poll numbers are dropping as fast as the stock market were not lost on the White House, so the President’s shindig was not listed on his official Thursday schedule, and it was closed to press. But the big Five-Oh only comes around once, and the party was a long one–guests were screened through the first security check point starting at around 5:00 PM and were still straggling out of the White House after 11:30 PM.

Thursday’s bash was the President’s fifth birthday party–he was toasted earlier in the day in the Blue Room by White House aides as well as family and friends, as first reported by Lynn Sweet of Chicago Sun-Times. On Wednesday, the President celebrated his birthday early in his hometown, Chicago, with three different campaign fundraising events, where thousands of supporters poured plenty of cash into campaign coffers. Hancock and his ensemble played for those events, too, as did Jennifer Hudson and rock band OK Go.

The First Family will spend this weekend at the Presidential retreat, Camp David, in Maryland.

  8. August 5, 2011 at 10:04 am

Republicans don’t want any programs for vets because it encourages soldiers to get out. I believe McCain said that during the campaign, speaking out against the new GI Bill.

I really like the reverse bootcamp idea. Maybe line up something in the green tech field.

This is great news and a sign that there is buyers remorse out there. It would be very interesting to see how these individual Republicans who are creating economic chaos in this country are polling in their respective districts. I love that folks are indeed catching on but I’m not sure that the Repubs who voted for these fools are ready to kick them out just yet. I sure hope that we have some really strong candidates who will challenge these nuts in 2012.

Worse than disgusting, but they got NOTHING, which is why we see this kind of crap ramp up. I hope the American people see through all this. Congressional Republicans are SO out of touch, SO unpopular that this kind of BS just digs them a deeper hole as far as I can see. Americans don’t like this petty divisive BS…they want jobs and security for their families. This just points out, ever more clearly, that they are petty and have no ideas of substance. As much as this enrages us, it just proves our point and makes the Dems all that more appealing to a wide audience.Even Republicans are sick to death of the RW bullcrap, and leaving the party they THOUGHT they knew. The President has appeared, in every single instance, the one that wants to really work and address the problems the country faces….the others? Not so much. Dems seem to have found their voices, said in unison, better than I have seen in the past. They also call these lamebrains out RIGHT AWAY! I like the messaging MUCH better. No whining…just a passion to get this done and give the President the congress and senate he needs to get some real work done. We need to finish the job!

Morning Joe was as usual all over the Dow Jones plunging over 500 points and woe oh woe to the Obama administration but Rev Al was there to straighten them and Michael Steele out. Thank goodness for Rev Al. Thank goodness.

But the real beaut of the morning was Sen. John Kerry (D) Massachusetts setting the the usual Morning Joe Crew – Mika, Joe and the bumbling idiot Willie – straight on a few things. John Kerry, Mark Warner, Kay Bailey Hutchinson have a bi-partisan infrastructure initiative proposal that could use $5-$10 billion from the government and investment from big business and other countries totaling $650 billion that could put Americans to work building roads, buildings, airports, municipal buildings, homes, etc etc. Everyone knows that infrastructure building is a no brainer way to get the economy back on track and when it comes to infrastructure, companies are ready to invest and it will grow our GDP by more than 3%. You would think everyone would be on board but oh no, the teabaggers strike again because they call it government spending not understanding that this is all about JOB CREATION.

After explaining his proposal, Joe then moved the topic to the intranisgence of congress and how everyone in congress was to blame for the economic uncertainty, the stock market plunging and the debt ceiling brouhaha. This was where John Kerry fought back HARD (other democrats would be wise to follow his style) he told Joe that there is nothing wrong with congress. Congress, its rules, regulations and modus operandi have always been the same going far back to the days of Tip O’Neal. The thing in congress that has changed is the PEOPLE. Kerry laid the blame square at the GOP in the house of reps feet where it rightfully belongs. He told Joe that this notion where a minority group in a party can hold the country hostage, were willing to split the baby in half and did not care that a default would spell economic calamity was the problem. They took a routine matter and almost brought the country to its knees. He called out Boehner for his lack of leadership and said President Obama did the best he could when he was he was working with a bunch of insane people who make up their own facts and a Speaker of the House who lacked courage. He said that he hopes McConnell and Boehner will be sensible enough and not kowtow to the extremes in their party and choose people who already have preconcieved notions of what they will and won’t do in the super committee. Kerry then turned his justified ire on to the media and in particular Morning Joe. He told Joe that the media has a hand in this mess also and they should stop trying to deny it. He told them that they should stop lying to the American people when they say both sides are to blame for the mess. Kerry told Joe that they should not be giving equal time to the two sides. One side has real facts and truth and the other insane side makes up facts and the media peddles that as truth!!!! He told Joe that the media should be ashamed of itself. Instead of seeking truth, they carry GOP water and muddle the issue. He told Joe that when they hear the lies peddled by the teaparty they should CALL THEM OUT. They should stop pretending as though it wasn’t the teaparty that caused this mess and should quit their lies about everyone in congress being complicit in the huge mess. Kerry was wonderful and after his wonderful and brilliant rant Joe, Mika, Mike and bumbling idiot Willie were all speechless. It was wonderful to witness and I wish more dems would stick to this message along with the GOP lack of jobs initiatives whenever they’re in front of the camera.

I am from the Viet Nam era (was in secondary school and part of college during most of it) and it is a shame to our nation how returning vets were treated; some are still sufferring. It is so wonderful and humane that our CIC is so aware of the whole person and what he/she needs to live full productive lives for themselves, their families and our nation when they return home. I am astounded almost everyday at how gifted this president is; he does not see us as collateral damage; he never shrugs and says “so be it” when it comes to people being adversely affected by policies; he has the long, wide view to see all parts of a problem and to come up with common sense approaches to deal with it; and he is smart enough to know that others are smart also and has the humility and intelligence to surround himself with such people on his team. We are watching a master at work; how lucky are we.

Here he was the war hero, and the Swift Boat thing destroyed him, and GWB was AWOL, and he was lauded to the sky. What a crazy Alice in Wonderland world! But, I think GWB was truly AWOL during his eight years in the White House too. I still believe Cheney and Rove and Rumsfeld ran things and made the decisions. Anyone who has to say “I am the decider” obviously isn’t. I’m going to send a thank you to Senator Kerry.

The Obamas and the Admin have been really strong on pushing veterans’ and active military members’ issues. I would love to see initiatives like this advertised in some sort of commercial/PSA. I think it would be really powerful to see images of vets coming home, while PBO narrates something about their sacrifices and dedication and their ultimate trek home after a decade of war. He can then explain the new initiatives and what the public can do to help. I think that would be a great 30-45 second spot on TV.

No smoke and mirrors, no fluffy slogans supporting the troops. The president is actually taking action to make lives better for the men and women and their families that sacrifice a great deal for all of us.

Once again, PBO has yanked an issue toyed with for political gains by the Republicans and put policy into reality to help build the lives of these service men and women.

Now, let’s see how much the GOP loves the troop. Will they support this president or will they seek more distractions?
