President Obama turns with Col. Kenneth Rizer to listen to members of the media and crew sing him Happy Birthday on the tarmac as he arrives from Chicago on Air Force One, Aug. 4, in Andrews Air Force Base

AP: President Barack Obama is expecting at least one birthday greeting when he turns 50 on Thursday.

“By the time I wake up, I’ll have an email from AARP asking me to call President Obama and tell him to protect Medicare,” Obama joked during a fundraiser in Chicago on the eve of his birthday.

… Senior members of Obama’s staff will toast the president in the Blue Room of the White House Thursday afternoon. At night, he’ll celebrate with family and friends, including some coming in from his hometown of Chicago, then cap the festivities with a weekend trip to Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.

…. He headlined birthday-themed fundraisers in Chicago Wednesday night to rake in money for his campaign and spoke via video conference to supporters holding their own presidential birthday events around the country.

A group from North Carolina sang “Happy Birthday,” while another in Ohio held up signs wishing the president a happy 50th.

With the cloud of uncertainty that surrounded the debt debate now lifted, Obama had a wide smile on his face for much of the night. He got another birthday serenade from musicians Jennifer Hudson, Herbie Hancock and the band OK Go, along with the crowd of about 2,400 gathered at Chicago’s historic Aragon Ballroom.

At a small dinner for high-dollar donors later in the night, Obama said there would be one very important present waiting for him in back in Washington on Thursday. His oldest daughter, Malia, was coming home from camp to celebrate his father’s birthday.

Obama was born Aug. 4, 1961, near the end of the baby boom years of 1946-64. He’s the third U.S. president who belongs to the baby boom generation, a population of more than 76 million. Bill Clinton was the first, followed by George W. Bush.

We collected $430 at our House Party last night which is on its way to OFA today. We also signed up some new people to work for PBO and local Dems. It was a good night. A lot of the people there don’t have big money and some are still unemployed but every one opened their pockets even if they could only give change. All are committed to work and give time to GOTV.

  40. August 4, 2011 at 9:45 am

Dang, our President is fine. He is just so darn good looking.

We had an awesome birthday house party for our Pres. It was such a thrill to see and hear him give a message to us then watch his remarks at the DNC. It was a great evening and people are ready to work. Three people signed up to register voters with me this month. We’re going to win again in 2012, people.

Caught a little of Morning Joe. You can always tell when things are looking really good for the President. Joe is angry and attacks and brings up stupid polls. He’s so transparent.

Mica mentioned that Hunstman was in some state and when he shook hands with a guy, the guy had never heard of him. Ouch! But they think — and he thinks — he can beat the President. How pathetically funny.

    • 74 hopefruit2
      August 4, 2011 at 10:04 am

Good to hear that your party last night went well.

And yes the President is doing great and his detractors are fuming. On Old Orange they are so desperate that there is a FP article pushing that silly Quinnipiac poll showing Romney gaining a few percentage points on PBO in the State of Pennsylvania. What they don’t want to acknowledge is that this particular Q poll’s demographics were evidently whiter, older and more conservative than the general election voters. It’s just a matter of time before Old Orange openly throws it’s full support behind their Republican candidate who they now secretly (but increasingly unable to hide) wish to beat the President in 2012. They.will.FAIL.

Happy Birthday Mr. President….you are a blessing, to America, and to the world, and today we celebrate YOU.

I try to remind myself that a good part of the shit storm aimed at President Obama is born out of competition, control, and the most base instincts of man. And that how I respond to it is actually the one thing that is within my persaonal capacity to manage, needless to say I often struggle with it. Looking at his beautiful smile and the energy in the connections with the people surrounding him, what resonates with me is LOVE. The power of love. Love is the ultimate manifestation of strength, it is stronger than fear, stronger than evil, it is stronger than hate. That is what President Obama awakens and connects with within us, we are united and strengthened through common purpose and love. I can’t think of a person that has inspired me more at this point in history. And I am proud to say, I am an Obamabot.

So I am not surprised the Morning Jackass is throwing a hissy fit, exactly what I would expect from a an indulgent, immature and self absorbed man child.

I plan to, I absolutely need to focus in a positive direction.

Tulips had asked that we write letters to the DOJ, requesting an investigation into the leaglity of the 274 pledges that have been made to the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. 272 Republicans (I think there are 5 or so holdouts) and 2 Democrats (Ben Nelson and Ben Chandler) have signed Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform pledge. It impresses me as a violation of the sworn oath each representative made to serve and protect the Constitution and the people of this country as they entered office. It may be more, as it certainly presents an impasse to governing, and strikes me as possibly being sedition. I wrote my Senators, and useless Rep last week regarding it, the Whitehouse and the DOJ late/early this morning. I think Tulips is right, we should mount political pressure to delegitimitize any allegience to it. I hope all here will consider putting forth that effort.

    Goooood Morning….

that BD…video brought tears to my eyes…..
    BWD…Awesomeeeeee Job

Last Night…i went to my first neighborhood meeting for the 2012 Obama/Biden..re-election campaign….there were about 30 folks there….they were energizeddddddd and ready to go……

one of the amazing things…was that the meeting was oganized and chaired by a high school senior…..how KOOL is that…

one of the highlights of the evening was a live video message from the President…and he took questions from the many organizing meetings from around the country….

one of the participants at our meeting, asked Henry…the young person that organized the meeting…why was he so involoved…he told us his story…
his grandfather…had worked hard all his life… he had been a factory worker…he had retired….was on Medicare and SS….he became a diabetic……and had to take a multitude of prescription drugs…but that Medicare did not cover it all….so his grandfather had to find a part time job to help pay for his meds….with the passage of the health care act…that donut hole was filled…and his grandfather’s meds were covered…..so for him it was his way of giving back……

my reason for being involved….i want to make a difference….to be part of the solution….and that i believe in this President…that he cares…about those who are the least of my brethren….that he wants to give voice to those folks who voices are seldom heard…

    Firedddddddddddddddd UP…..Ready to Goooooo!!

    ps…plan to make a donation as well…..

    • August 4, 2011 at 10:26 am

I went to a canvassing session last year. There was a young man there who was also a high school senior and he thoroughly impressed me with his level of commitment. He said both his parents were Republicans, and he had decided that he was a Democrat, and his parents encouraged him to get involved and stay informed. He was so knowledgeable, so committed, so informed of the issues and generally very compassionate towards his fellow citizens. I will never forget this young man – I spent an hour talking to him afterwards – he was interested in why a Canadian was so involved – so we both had a lot to share with each other. These young people are fighting for their futures.

  53. August 4, 2011 at 10:14 am

Just found this article in the UK Guardian. It’s entitled: Happy 50th Birthday, President Obama. Then it lists 50 reasons for him to celebrate. here are the best ones :

Barack Obama is 50 – yay! And what better birthday present than 50 reasons for him to be cheerful in an otherwise trying week? Double yay!:

2 He has 9,433,000 Twitter followers and that’s loads!

3 And that means lots of happy-birthday Tweets, which is nice.

4 Sarah Palin has only 620,000! Pathetic!

5 If anyone picks on him because of his ears, he can have that person killed.

7 It is the only day of the year he can plausibly enjoy a tea party.

    17 50 is the new 40.

28 The US constitution states that, on his birthday, the president gets dominion of all the beasts of the land and the sea.

30 He gets to impress people by telling them that he is “a quintagenarian”.

31 Although being president of the United States should really be enough.

32 I mean, he can basically have any sandwich he wants, all the time! Awesome!

33 And presumably that extends to birthday cakes too.

36 He has a very attractive wife. What? We’re just saying!

37 He’s on Vanity Fair’s Most Stylish Men 2011 list, released yesterday.

44 He looks, like, 44 at the oldest

I have to laugh at the media sometimes. On my MSN.com, there is a “tribute” to our President’s 50th birthday in the form of a consolation (Cheer up, Mr. President) accompanied by a picture of a depressed-looking President, a complimentary psychoanalysis (Will our President experience a mid-life crisis?); a list of secrets for staying fit at 50, a list of “money moves” that people ought to make when they turn 50, and a photo gallery of “stunning” 50-somethings, none of whom have anything to do with the President.

Okaaaaaay. This is nothing but comic relief at this point. I’m sure if PBO comes across this he would be rolling on the floor.

    • August 4, 2011 at 12:08 pm

Thats the first thing I saw when I turned on my computer hopefruit.. and I thought how out of touch the media is- how foolish they are.. this President has been so upbeat about turning 50.. but instead of acknowledging that and having a headline wishing him a Happy Birthday Mr. President.. naw they gotta make something up and turn it negative and as you say, even the photo is meant to make him look unhappy. They are indeed pathetic.

anyway.. the heck with the media.. I’m in fine spirits today- far as I’m concerned POTUS saved America this week and I hope he’s having a wonderful birthday and tuning out all silliness by haters and naysayers.

I have written a couple letters to media outlets questioning their choice of photographs of both the President and First Lady. They tend to use the few that are the least flattering, which granted, is hard because there are a million stunning photographs to select from. They impress me as working overtime and unnecesaarily, to attempt to put a tarnish on his brilliance. Fools.

Thank you all for these great tributes to our magnificant President. I hope donations today hit a record high.

Please join me in lighting a candle for our President today. It is at 44. Can we pass 50 or maybe double it?

I just got this e-mail from FLOTUS urging people to sign a happy birthday card for PBO.

Every day, I see Barack make choices he knows will affect every American family. That’s no small task for anyone — and more proof that he’s earning every last one of those gray hairs.

This has been a busy week in Washington, but today happens to be Barack’s 50th birthday. I’m writing to you because this year, the girls and I would like to do something a little different.

I’m asking friends and supporters of this campaign to wish him a happy birthday by signing his card, and sharing why you’re on this journey with us.

Your names and notes will become part of a book that tells the story of this campaign — who’s building it, why we’re in this thing, and what he means to us. We’ll deliver a copy to Barack and send one to our campaign offices across the country.

    Sign the card for Barack.

I’ve known Barack for more than 20 of his 50 years, and we’ve been through quite a lot together.

It still amazes me that no matter how many decisions and distractions he’s faced with every day, he’s always able to focus on the bigger picture. One way he does that is by making time for stories and letters from people like you — because he knows that this job isn’t about him, but about the millions of folks around the country he’s fighting for.

This next year will challenge us all to work harder than ever before, but the crucial thing is that you’re here now, early on, helping to build this campaign.

I know that, like Barack and me, you have your own reasons why, so I hope you’ll take a moment to sign the card and share your story with him and other supporters of this campaign.

Thanks for being a part of this,

I signed and sent this note:

PBO, you inspire me. Your fortitude, your human spirit and your love for this country is infectious. Thank you for the example you set for all of us. Please get some rest. Know that we love and cherish you for all you do. If you are ever on Internet, check out these blogs, The People’s View, Blackwaterdog and the Obama Diary. You will find that you are much loved and your supporters here will never let you down.

PS: Please take some time off to relax with Mrs. Obama, our lovely FLOTUS, Malia and Sasha. God Bless you, always.

Calling all family and friends. yesterday Arianna Huffnignton stated that president Obama needs therapy. She is trying to get a AA huff post. She has already has a sensational headline up in the media section trying to cause a division. Her intentions is to divide the AA vote. She has been exposed and we are tweeting , email all friends of her intentions we ask that you do the same.we need all , especially AA. @ariannahuff. What some might not know these are racial undertones coming out , these attempts was used with slaves. characterizing AA as lazy, crazy less than a man, stupid. we must fight back and we ask everyone.

    • August 4, 2011 at 11:20 am

She’s been trying to do that since November 5th 2008. The result is The President’s numbers remain very impressive among our community and to this day people wouldn’t know who Arianna Huffington even if she walked down the street with a name tag. Nobody is listening to her in the black Community particularly when she tries to hide behind the usual suspects in order to undermine the President. She’s fighting a losing battle and it only going to get worst for her.

      • 122 nintendowii10
        August 4, 2011 at 11:24 am

Like I pointed out, this is the same Arianna who pals around with Newt Gingrich, Darrell Issa, and Andrew Brietbart, she is NO liberal, progressive, or Democrat. And she has a weird fetish for Timothy Geithner for some reason: during my history of posting at HuffNPuff, she would find a way to make a thread bashing Timothy Geithner every single day and trying to make Geithner into an enemy. She’s no different from Jane Hamsher or Rush Limbaugh, they ALL want PBO to fail.

I agree with you derbingle….in fact most black folks understand better than most about the opposition that the President has been under,,,,and how they have attempted to undermine the fatith in this President…..and no one is surprised by it….

the harder threat comes from the so-called black leaders who claim that the President isn’t black enough for them….but we have also seen these kind of leaders come thru our community….paid to divide us…and cause confusion…

        they offer Nothing to us….

but as i have said in previous posts…

I’m late again…LOL. I was incredulous at one of the host on our local AA talk radio here in Philly, namely Albert Butler. He broadcasted live, apparently, from the NABJ (National Assn. of Black Journalists) convention held in Philly today. Upon my arrival home this evening, I turned on the radio and he played a clip from the speeches. And who should be one of the guests? Yes, Ms. Haggiana, giving her spiel about the plight of AA’s. I was so livid, I had to turn it off. I mean, since when does she care about AA’s, and to think that these so-called educated people don’t get that? Unreal. I hold no real hope for so many AA’s in this age of “get-mine, and to hell with everyone else”.

      August 4, 2011 at 11:19 am

Telling that Rachel Maddow thinks Arianna the Republican is funny. It sounds like Maddow is getting ready to go hard right, just like Arianna, but disguise it as “representing the left.”

As for Arianna, the bitch can go fuck herself. She pals around with the likes of Newt Gingrich, Darrell Issa, and Andrew Brietbart, she is NO liberal or Democrat AT ALL! And she has the nerve to say that President Obama needs therapy, she is projecting her own mental issues onto PBO!

      • August 4, 2011 at 11:23 am

I don’t see that to be honest. Oh she can be annoying as all get out but I don’t see a rightward lurch in her future. Her problem is purity left. Not all the time mind you because I have seen her do some decent reporting from time to time and admit when she is wrong. But Rachel’s memory when it comes to POTUS is way too short.

        • 134 nintendowii10
          August 4, 2011 at 11:28 am

IMO, “purity left” is just like “purity right,” they both essentially use the same talking points.

As for Maddow’s “reporting,” it falls flat when she wastes time attacking PBO for “being weak.” I’ve tuned into Randi Rhodes once (yesterday) and she did more honest reporting during the three hours I tuned in as opposed to Maddow. Randi reported on how Fox News had a guest who compared women getting help for domestic abuse to getting a manicure; reported on the FAA crisis; and reported the FACTS about the debt ceiling crisis and even ran a clip of Rush Limbaugh admitting that the Democrats gave away NOTHING and the Republicans gave away EVERYTHING. I’ve not tuned into Maddow recently, but reading the posts from viewers here that do lead me to believe she hasn’t done anything close to what Randi Rhodes did yesterday on her show as far as reporting issues goes.

          • August 4, 2011 at 11:39 am

Well Randi has always rolled like that which is a good thing. Rachel is a little too inconsistent put when she puts her mind to it she can really turn out some good stuff. The problem is no one knows when the next wake up call is coming.

          • 136 EDP4BHO
            August 4, 2011 at 10:22 pm

I said it before and here it goes again…….only Randi and Rev Al will give you the bonafide truth, and STICK with it. No playing to the masses for ratings. What you see/hear from them is what you get. All else is a waste.

So the bitch @maddow & A Huff the hoe think the President needs therapy. Ain’t that a bitch. They need it more then him

    C Gauvin

Fuck Arianna Huff. Pro-Left continues to tell LIberals and progressives to stay home or vote GOP. Arianna telling voters to not vote for Obama,
he’s not your man. Fuck her. She made $100+ Million on the Huff sale to the conservative AOL group and lectures us on middle class struggling values. Fuck You

She is a vile fraud but what did I miss? What did she say exactly?

Someone has to stop this corrupt libertarian. She is doing a lot of damage by going on numerous shows representing the ”left”.

Most folks know that Arianna represents the very corporate interests she supposedly hates: she sold her blog to corporate AOL to make a fast buck, she’s a corporatist. But in the minds of Fineman and the other bloggers on her site, it’s PBO who’s the REAL corporatist 😯

I am just stating MY opinion.

It’s just MY opinion that it would be nice to have a BIRTHDAY THREAD without out all the crap. It’s just MY opinion that it would be nice. I am very cool with OTHER people’s opinions that that’s not what they want. It’s not like it’s anything new — just more PL crap. Crap yesterday, crap today, crap tomorrow — that’s what they do.

It’s just MY opinion that it would have been nice to have ONE thread that was free from it.

But guess not. It’s easy to be negative, and I think people like a nice steady diet of the negative — so partake.

It’s all good — it’s a free country, and this is Chip’s space. It’s all good.

I’ll just scroll on by (as usual) and enjoy the birthday wishes.

I’m glad you brought it up also: I never go to toxic sites but noticed trending comments on my twitter timeline. I save my clicks for pragmatic sites and count on others to wade through the garbage and let me know what’s going on. I’m always struck by the photos and videos from our president out and about: people don’t look disappointed and discouraged! And he seems to get a lift from being among ordinary people who he works to represent every day rather than the navel-gazing Washington media, professional left, and pundiots in general. The media is clearly pushing the meme that 2012 is all about the economy. It is also about who do we trust at the helm. I haven’t seen any republican I would trust for a nanosecond. The most recent debt debacle clearly illustrates that they are all about protecting the top 1% and corporations and dismantling the social safety net, government protections, women’s rights, LGBT rights, environmental protection, food safety etc. They would be happy if we all die from e coli, less drain on Medicare in the future

Grateful to Chipsticks, BWD, The People’s View, Steve Benen, WhatIsWorking, Angry Black Lady, Extreme Liberal and all the others on the blogrolls.

I try to post something every day on twitter of positive accomplishments of the administration that too often go unreported. WH now has share buttons on all their posts.

Biden has to put his foot down because the professional left and the media continue to attack Panetta and make him the figurehead of what’s going on in Iraq, just like they try to make Timothy Geithner the figurehead of what’s going on in economic matters.

Every defense secretary will push for more troops, more spending, more use of the military. It’s the nature of the job. The pushback is equally important. Panetta needs to be taken to the woodshed about what he says out loud.

Please, let’s all remember how rough August can be. Each and every year when Congress goes on recess, the MSM pumps up the bitterness and division even more (hard to imagine, I know, but it gets especially ugly at this time) to flll their airwaves with wall-to-wall negativity. Let’s not fall prey to the divisiveness. It’s been a very rough time for all of us these last several weeks but let’s please all hang together. We have a lot of work to do in addition to dealing with the daily onslaught from the press. It’s going to be grueling but let’s support one another and do what we can to stay positive and hopeful. Our POTUS needs us.

You’re absolutely right. However they have been known to gain traction in these August hate-fests. We need to not lose control of the narrative. I’m seeing it slip away on the debt deal like it did on ACA. The President is already planning on being out there, and our messengers are better than I’ve seen in years from the Dem’s. But other than our purposely-chosen pragmatic sites, the airwaves are filled with lies. It’s an issue we can’t ignore but be vigilant.

Jake Tapper is losing it. He has become extremely temperamental and contentious with Jay. Today he kept hammering, What is the President doing about jobs TODAY? and then going on about how he went to Chicago last night. He’s practically yelling and really needs to go away and take a deep breath because he is freaking out, sitting there fuming and looking sullen every day. Worthless tool.

The rest of the session was echoes of the same question with one woman in the second row asking why anybody should believe PBO when he says he’s working on the economy. They are all really pushing the right-wing agenda.

And whenever Bush held a presser, NO ONE asked him the hard questions, all Bush would do was crack jokes and make them all laugh, like they were at a bar. Now they dare to ask PBO the hard questions when they didn’t do shit when Bush was in office, I HATE the double standards in the media!!!! 😡 😡 😡 😡

These idiot press corp people are supposed to be able to tell the difference between a “vacation” and a “weekend”. What about the House and Senate – who left on vacation without finishing their work, and having accomplished nothing but naming post offices and dragging the US economy to the brink of disaster?

I know! Tapper was an even bigger asshole today than he normally is, if you can believe it. Then after he asked his stupid questions, he pulled out his laptop and started surfing the internet (I’m guessing). He was ridiculous! He was the only person there on a laptop, what makes that douche think he’s so special? Assmonkey! Then that annoying blonde woman……. is she trying to get recruited by FOX? 🙄 then Ed was like: “Oh, you said PBO talked to the Russian president( Medvedev), did they talk about the fact that the Russian prime minister (Putin) called Americans parasites?”—– Yesterday on the news it was reported that PM Putin said that America must take care of it’s obligations responsibility (debt ceiling) and stop being a parasite on the global economy.——— Ed of course mischaracterized what was said because he is an idiot. 🙄 Goodness, where the hell do these people come from? At one point, someone asked Jay what the president is gonna do about either jobs or the FAA situation and Jay was like, “I’d refer you to members of congress” or “this is something you should ask congress about”—translation: wizen up you lazy mofos!!! The president doesn’t make laws, the congress does and their lazy asses are on a 5 week vacation! Do your damned jobs and investigate and report the truth!!! Lousy bunch of A-holes —— I wish there was an emoticon for a sneer. 😕

The Speaker of the House should be asked the question. 8 months into the year, the party that ran on jobs, and is responbile for the writing the legislation is the person/party that should be be answering for the lack of productivity and the betrayal of their campaign promises.

What is Tapper’s problem? Republican operative? Or just a major league jackass?

The right-wingers on the internet don’t like it either, but they swear they just LOVE themselves some U.S. Constitution. Right!!!!! Tapper and the other rw media personalities never asked GWB when so and so would be addressed because they had their noses so far up his stinking behind to say anything.

I tuned into the press briefing in time to hear that question, and actually laughed out loud. They are ridiculous. I wanted to tweet Jay a message to say “they have to trust the President because no-one else cares whether they’re working or not, or whether the economy heals or not – haven’t you idiots been paying attention”?!

The WHPC is worse than useless.

Just about as much as Corny West and Tavis Smiley, the token black men of the left.

I’ve had it with these white folks, left and right, thinking they know the plight of black people. Speaking for myself as a black person, I could not give a fuck less what Arianna HuffnPuff says, especially regarding her so-called understanding of my race. It’s a horrible and ugly attempt to exploit my race for her personal gain, which is UGLY, and as the saying goes, God doesn’t like ugly. Arianna will pay for her sins one day.

      • August 4, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Also there are a lot of words that trigger an autofilter that sends your posts into pending, where they will NEVER get posted, and if you do things to get around the autofilter, that also triggers a ban. Doesn’t sound very “progressive” or “liberal” to me, but that’s what you get when you sell your blog to corporate AOL. And yet Arianna and her minions believe PBO is the REAL corporatist. 😯

Interesting article, but as many experts have pointed out, Obama is not a Boomer (nor a GenXer) but rather is a member of the generation in-between: Generation Jones–the generation born 1954-1965. Obama was born during the 1946-1964 DEMOGRAPHIC boom in babies, but there are two GENERATIONS born during those two decades: Baby Boom Generation (born 1942-1953) and Generation Jones (born 1954-1965).

A long list of top media, including The New York Times, Newsweek, CNN, Washington Post, and NBC, have argued that Obama is clearly part of this heretofore lost generation between Boomers and Generation X. Here is a video with a bunch of major political figures discussing Obama’s identity as a GenJoneser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ta_Du5K0jk. If you google around, you’ll find the Generation Jones concept and term has become quite widely accepted.

    The White House Blog

    Responding To Representative Ryan
Posted by Stephanie Cutter on August 03, 2011 at 09:14 PM EDT

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan offered an interesting take on the President’s leadership on dealing with our long-term debt and deficits the recent deficit reduction negotiations in today’s Wall Street Journal. Below are a few of Congressman Ryan’s claims along with our responses.

Claim: The President has failed to put forward a plan to tackle our long term debt and deficits.
Since the beginning of the current debate on the debt ceiling, the President has led with a comprehensive plan for deficit reduction.

In April, the President released a fiscal framework for $4 trillion in deficit reduction, which described the President’s plans for closing tax loopholes and for responsible reforms of Medicare and Medicaid so they are strengthened for future generations.

Beginning less than a week after he announced this Framework, the President led four separate efforts to negotiate a compromise on the debt limit – talks with Vice President Joe Biden, meetings with all eight Congressional leaders from both parties, and two rounds of negotiations directly with Speaker Boehner.

Throughout this process, the Administration put forward specific policy proposals with the goal of reaching an agreement on a $4 trillion package – an agreement which Speaker Boehner ultimately walked away from.
Claim: The GOP “won the policy debate” during the debt negotiations.
We believe that this agreement was not a victory for one party, but for the American people. If Congress did not act and allowed the United States to default on its obligations, the results would have been catastrophic for our economy and for millions of Americans still digging out from the last recession.

The debt agreement is consistent with the President’s commitment to protecting our nation from default and achieving significant deficit reduction through a balanced approach. It represents an important down payment on reform of about $1 trillion and sets the stage for additional balanced deficit reduction by the end of the year.

In enacting this bill, the President held to his principles—and prevented Republicans from ending Medicare as we know it, slashing Medicaid, and threatening Social Security.

The President prevented Republicans from using the prospect of default as leverage again in six months by pushing any additional debt limit increases to 2013.

The cuts in the first phase are balanced between domestic and security spending, while protecting critical initiatives like aid for college students.

If the new Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction fails to act, the law includes a balanced enforcement mechanism—that divides automatic cuts 50-50 between defense and non-defense with low-income programs exempted.
Claim: The President “warned Republican leaders not to call his bluff by sending him a bill without tax increases.”
As the AP reported, President Obama warned Republicans not to call his bluff “by passing a short-term debt limit increase he has threatened to veto.”

The President stood firm and forced Republicans to back down, preventing them from using the prospect of default as leverage again in six months by ensuring that any additional debt limit increases will not be needed until 2013.
Claim: Spending on Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act is projected to skyrocket, while the House Republicans’ budget outlined a responsible approach to Medicare and Medicaid Reform.
The Affordable Care Act was fully paid for, and according to the CBO will reduce the deficit by $200 billion over the next 10 years and by more than $1 trillion in the next decade.

The Affordable Care Act will provide coverage to 34 million Americans and will extend the life of the Medicare trust fund.

The House Republican plan would convert Medicare into a voucher program; increasing seniors’ health costs by $6,400 annually starting in 2022; raise health insurance premiums for middle-class Americans and small businesses; and cut Federal Medicaid spending by one-third by the end of the decade, which would cause 50 million to lose coverage.
Claim: The House Republicans’ plan would put the budget on a path to balance without tax increases, while President Obama tried to use the debt ceiling negotiations to raise taxes.
The House Republicans’ plan would also put the nation on a path to end the guarantee of Medicare for our seniors while imposing deep spending cuts that would harm our economy to balance out tax cuts for the highest income earners.

Their approach locks in many of the irresponsible policies that brought us to the debt limit this week including tax cuts for the wealthy, big corporations and special interests.

In stark contrast, the President stands committed to a balanced approach with responsible entitlement reform, and comprehensive tax reform that produces a system which is fairer, has fewer loopholes, less complexity, and is not rigged in favor of those who can afford lawyers and accountants to game it.

Obama Turns 50 Despite Republican Opposition
    AUGUST 4, 2011 | ISSUE

WASHINGTON—After months of heated negotiations and failed attempts to achieve any kind of consensus, President Obama turned 50 years old Thursday, drawing strong criticism from Republicans in Congress. “With the host of problems this country is currently facing, the fact that our president is devoting time to the human process of aging is an affront to Americans everywhere,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who advocated a provision to keep Obama 49 at least through the fall of 2013. “To move forward unilaterally and simply begin the next year of his life without bipartisan support—is that any way to lead a country?” According to White House officials, Obama attempted to work with Republicans right up until the Aug. 4 deadline, but was ultimately left with no choice except to turn a year older.

This is lower than low. The Turtle only wishes he were able to go back and celebrate his 50th birthday today. This is interesting…… A couple of important things to note

      1) President Obama mad it a point to discuss the FAA stalemate when he spoke about the debt ceiling on Tuesday 8/2.

      2) Yesterday, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood 8/3

      3) Senators Reid, Schumer, Boxer and Rockefeller gave an amazing press conference where they eviscerated the Republican Party and also most importantly they schooled the press because they were not asking the right questions. Instead of focusing on yet another hostage taking by the Republican Party, the reporters kept asking why the Democrats couldn’t just do x, y or z to resolve the issue. The Democrats were just awesome. I am trying to find the link to the press conference on 8.2.

yeah. I heard that. I think the premise of the debate was repugs would allow for the FAA extension if Dems signed off on not allowing Delta’s employees to form unions/ defunding rural airports. I don’t know how you negotiate with people who would rather let 74,000 people suffer just so a corporation doesn’t allow its employees to unionize. Apparently, Delta has been aggressively lobbying the the Stinkypugs. 😕 Did i mention what HUGE bastards the Stinkypugs are?

LadyH, to me this a prime example of what can happen when folks are called out for the liars and crooks they are. See, the repugs can dish it out but they can’t take the heat when it’s turned back on them. Reid and company ate they tails up yesterday in that presser, and look who blinked. Yep, the repugs. Methinks they are running scared after the call to [arms] last week from our brilliant PBO, and 9 million+ of his army responded. Yeah they may still talk a lot of bluster; but if one listens closely, you can detect that it’s nothing more than ‘talking loud and saying nothing. They goose is cooked and they know it. As the saying goes, the gig is up and they know it. That’s my take on it!

There is currently a fact sheet at WhiteHouse.gov that tries to explain how the 12 member committee will determine additional deficit reductions. Guess who is requesting more involvement from the American people again…..

All About the So-Called “Super Committee”

Q: What can I do to make a difference?

A: During this debate, President Obama asked the American people to urge Washington to put partisanship aside, and make the tough choices that are best for the country. Your voice made a huge difference in protecting programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security during the first stage of this deal.

If you agree with President Obama – if you support a balanced approach – don’t stay silent on this issue. If you want to see Washington compromise, put politics aside, and ask all Americans to pay their fair share – then make your voice heard.

And stay in touch with the Office of Public Engagement! Visit Whitehouse.gov/engage to learn how Americans from all over the country are changing the way Washington does business, both in this debate, and on a wide variety of other issues.

Ok I’m going to say something controversial here. I just listened to Ray LaHood. He kept saying “Congress” can resolve this by passing a clean bill, as if the problem was with the whole Congress. Senate Democrats AGREE and WANT a clean bill. The problem is with the REPUBLICANS !!!!! THE HOUSE REPUBLICANS !!!!! NOT “Congress” in general. Jeezzzzz couldn’t Mr. LaHood IDENTIFY what the REAL problem is ???!!!!!

Good Lord, this is one instance where the differences between the two parties couldn’t be more clear !!!!

No wonder the WH press corps can peddle the meme that “both sides do it”… This definitely HELPS republicans, because they’re not viewed as the obstructionists they are !!!

Oh and for the record I don’t think the problem is that Mr. Lahood is a republican. Jay is always talking about “Congress”, we have to admit that. I love LOVE this administration, they’re wonderful, dedicated, honest and everything, but I’m getting concerned and puzzled about their constant refusal to be more outspoken about where the problem lies. Somebody talk me down…

If you watch the press conference led by Senator Reid, I don’t think you will have any issues with where they are placing the blame for this FAA stalemate. In fact, not only do they call out the Republican Party, they also call out the reporters for not asking the pertinent questions about why there is yet another hostage taking manufactured crisis by the Republican Party.

By the way, I agree that LaHood just making a blanket statement about congress is not good messaging.

        • 241 hopefruit2
          August 4, 2011 at 6:13 pm

Since The Repubs took control of the house in Jan 2011, the word “Congress” is actually dogwhistle for “instransigent Rethuglicans.” Press Secretary Jay knows that the DEMS want a clean bill so he’s calling the house Repubs to do just that. Everyone including the WH press corps knows that they are the ones who control the house and are blocking legislation. So congress=Repubs as of Jan 2011. Keep this in mind, lovepolitics2008.

            August 4, 2011 at 6:26 pm

Interesting point. I know that the press corps knows who is blocking legislation, who agrees to a clean bill, who does not. I’m concerned about the general voter. They don’t necessarily understand the dogwhistle for “intransigent Rethuglicans”. THAT’s what concerns me.

DOW DROPS 500 points! We need to pray for President Obama. There are people manipulating the stock market to make him look bad. And to have this happen on his birthday is reprehensible!

The Dow closed down 500 points, or 4 percent, to a new low this year. Markets are fearing spending cuts as well as a double-dip recession. There are also worries about Europe’s continuing debt crisis, which is now centered on Italy and Spain. The Dow and the S&P were both down more than 10 percent off 2011 highs.

    • August 4, 2011 at 4:22 pm

No manipulations – it’s reax to the GOP Hostage bill. It’s why I hope the Dems have video of Boehner saying “I got 98% of what I wanted”. Because now he owns the economy – they want to ruin the economy and then run against the President pinning it all on him.

Regardless of what Beohner says or the Democrats do, Wall St and the Repubs in congress are manipulating the economy because they KNOW they can get away with it. The media refuses to be honest and call them out. The PL refuses to call them out and would prefer to harass the President and threaten to not vote for him. As long as the Republicans don’t pay the price for their actions, they will continue to manipulate the jobs situation and other aspects of the economy.

        ===========================STEVE BENEN, WASHINGTON MONTHLY============================

        Look out below

John Boehner may want to take back that boast about getting 98% of what he wanted in the debt-reduction deal. The claim was exaggerated anyway, but the fact that he said it at all may prove to be politically problematic.

        ======================================CBSNEWS VIDEO=====================================

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) Monday told CBS’ Scott Pelley that he got almost everything he wanted in the deal to raise the debt ceiling.

“How did the grand bargain fail?” Pelley asked. “What was the breaking point? How did you tell the president you were walking away?”

“It really boiled down to two issues,” Boehner explained. “President was insisting on more taxes. President never got serious about the kind of spending cuts that were necessary in order to get America back on a sound fiscal footing.”

“You were unable to get your own caucus behind your bill a few days ago,” Pelley noted. “Do you intend to remain Speaker of the House?”

“I do,” Boehner replied. “When you look at this final agreement that we came to with the white House, I got 98 percent of what I wanted. I’m pretty happy.”

Yeah, I heard that investors are taking money out of investments and holding the money in cash – banks are thinking about charging them for holding their cash. This means that these are trillions of dollars that are sitting in the bank, instead of being invested in the economy. People should be furious!

      • August 4, 2011 at 4:33 pm

The fact that these investors are willing to take real losses and store their cash where it stands to make no money at zero percent interest, tells you exactly how intent these dark forces are in making President Obama a one term President. It’s crazy and frightening. I intend to light a candle for the President every day until election 2012 (maybe beyond). The love of money and greed really are the devil’s work.

We have seen where the American Public will respond if PBO spkeaks we listen. Mystery Firm Gave $1M to Romney Campaign

Mitt Romney recently received one of the largest 2012 presidential campaign contributions yet, but the source of the money is dubious. W Spann LLC mysteriously dissolved six weeks after funneling $1 million to Restore Our Future, a political-action committee backing Romney’s presidential bid. There are few clues as to who was behind the donation except for the founder of the now-defunct company, Boston-based Lawyer Cameron Casey. If Casey formed W Spann LLC primarily to raise money for the pro-Romney group, “there is a real issue of it being just a subterfuge” that could develop into a “serious” legal issue, according to the Federal Election Commission’s former general counsel. He added that the donation is a “road map for how people can hide their identities” while making campaign contributions.

I see CBS Knoller’s tweet is that Senate will pass House measure, extending funding thru Sept. but also $16.5 million in cuts to rural communitie. Bah! I am so exhausted by the hostage-taking and the refusal to compromise by the House. This is getting to be ridiculous—–that 1 branch of this govt. is hijacking the whole deal.

      • August 4, 2011 at 5:49 pm

Those rural airports were all in Dem states/districts – but LaHood has some sort of veto power here to reinstate it so it’s basically a clean bill extension that will be fought when Congress returns in September. Rural funding is a pretend issue, it’s really about unions – but the GOP made up the rural funding issue to try and mask it. Everybody knows what’s up though, even the media isn’t really playing their game here.

Did anyone catch the genius that is Rev Al Sharpton on MSNBC today? He more than called out Eric Cantor. He DECIMATED him. Called him a two faced, double speaking LIAR!!!!. Cantor told the WSJ that the GOP had lied during the 2010 election when they said they would fulfill their mandate of providing jobs and all that jazz. Rev Al had his panel and Matt Lewis tried to justify what Cantor said. Rev Al wouldn’t have any of that. Then they moved on to the topic of Medicare and Lewis tried to justify the Paul Ryan plan and Rev told him that if the GOP want to sell the idea to people that when they reach Medicare age they should just die if they can’t afford the health premiums then by all means they should do so and be prepared to lose every district in 2012 just like they lost NY-26.

Then Rev Al wished PBO a Happy Birthday and said that these were on his wish list for PBO:

    1. He wishes that Sarah Palin would run for president. “Run Sarah Run!!!!”

    2. He wishes PBO would be allowed to do his job instead of having to negotiate with hostage takers

    3. He wishes Newt Gingrich would reactivate his Tiffany’s account and splurge on presents for PBO

  115. August 4, 2011 at 7:22 pm

To my surprise, a few sane Republicans

It’s for these reasons, that I can’t deal with the Conservatives. Paul Gigot used to have a spot on McNeil/Leher for Friday night political wrap (Shields and Gigot). In that, he was the voice of reason and moderation with the hyperbolic Shields. Now as WSJ Editorial and his own WSJ show, he parrots GOP talking points.

As a small business owner who believes in spending less than you take in, and would prefer that individuals take more responsibility for the issues that effect their lives, I want to be a Conservative. But I can’t be what these folks are. Not just the Becks, Hannity’s, Limbaugh’s, etc. The supposed mainstream ones also appear to be blind to the facts.

Is Obama responsible for the recession? Not a chance. Did the GOP offer anything of substance that would have been better for the economy? Not that I saw. Lowering taxes below what they are currently wouldn’t appear to make things much better and frankly we did that in the form of payroll tax deductions, stimulus money was 3/4 tax rebates, homebuying credits, car buying credits, etc. These were all versions of tax relief. Companies are sitting on the largest cash hoards in history (Apple more than the US Gov’t) and banks are not lending – and customers and businesses are not ready to borrow as they are still working through the bing borrowing of the 2,000’s.

In a previous post I asked to hear Conservative solutions to creating economic growth and I didn’t get any responses. I’d love to hear some creative solutions now.

Are there things Obama could have done differently? Sure. But aside those ideas that come from our own particular political bent, once you remove that, most honest people would probably say he has done the best he could under the circumstances.

As far as the politics of it. I wasn’t politically aware much before Clinton in ‘92. Seems to me that the GOP found the issue of personal attacks and investigations a winner politically. Whitewater, the Vince Foster suicide, Monica Lewinsky; none of these had anything to do with Clinton’s execution of his duties. In general he governed as a moderate, some because of his own bent and some because the GOP Congress forced that. Welfare to work, balancing the budget (he gets a little credit for that, but not all), Paygo rules, etc.

The Democrats took a page from the GOP and did the same thing to Bush (but in my opinion they were (a) not as bad on the personal stuff as the GOP on Clinton and (b) had lots of targets to go after regarding Bush’s personal duties including Cheney setting energy policy with only the consultation of the energy companies including Enron, changing foriegn policy from we respond to threats to one of we initiate action on those who might threaten us, deliberately crafting a definition of tortue and “enemy combatant” to flout the Geneva Conventions, and outing a covert CIA agent for political reprisal.).

When Obama was elected the GOP took a page from their Clinton book; birther movement, overt and non-overt racism, going after Michelle Obama for working on healthy families (Nancy Reagan got some ridicule for “Just Say No”, but nothing like this). Add to that the lies and half truths on policy and it makes me want to disengage. Maybe that’s what they want.

I’m happy to listen to Conservative and Libertarian ideas, so long as they are willing to consider the effects on America as a whole, not hide behind the ideology and also be willing to honestly consider other ideas. Will crafting gun laws so you can take your guns into a bar create fewer gun deaths? Will lowering tax rates on individuals and companies that already have lots of money cause them to invest that money in ways that create more jobs and spur the US economy?

I’d like to see more people like Frum, engage more moderate Liberals to craft better policy.

Disapproval of Congress at Historic Level, Poll Finds

The debate over raising the debt ceiling, which brought the nation to the brink of default, has sent disapproval of Congress to its highest level on record and left most Americans saying that creating jobs should now take priority over cutting spending, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

A record 82 percent of Americans now disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job — the most since The Times first began asking the question in 1977, and even more than after another political stalemate led to a shutdown of the federal government in 1995. More than four out of five people surveyed said that the recent debt ceiling debate was more about gaining political advantage than about doing what is best for the country. Nearly three-quarters said that the debate had harmed the image of the United States in the world.

The public’s opinion of the Tea Party movement has soured in the wake of the debt ceiling debate. The Tea Party is now viewed unfavorably by 40 percent of the public and favorably by just 20 percent, according to the poll. In mid-April only 29 percent of those polled viewed the movement unfavorably, while 26 percent viewed it favorably. And 43 percent of Americans now think the Tea Party has too much influence on the Republican Party, up from 27 percent in mid-April.

The president’s overall job approval rating remained relatively stable, with 48 percent approving of the way he handles his job as president and 47 percent disapproving — down from the bump up in the polls he received in the spring after the killing of Osama bin Laden, but in line with how he has been viewed for nearly a year. By contrast, Speaker John A. Boehner, an Ohio Republican, saw his disapproval rating shoot up 16 points since April: 57 percent of those polled now disapprove of the way he is handling his job, while only 30 percent approve.

UT, you might as well tweet the teabaggers these poll numbers from the CBS Poll.

I posted the CBS poll results to my FB wall with this comment: Yep, Speaker Boehner won alright. He preserved the tax cut for America’s richest citizens and the subsidies for Big Oil and Big Business, but he LOST those Americans who have more votes than anyone in these three categories.

Serves him right to have his approval rating sink like a large stone in a small pond. People aren’t as stupid as the republicans think they are. I believe this is why Noonan, the MSM, and some of the PLers expressed their disapproval with PBO’s call for Americans to call, write, and tweet last week. It has GOT to be a bitter pill for the republicans to swallow to know that PBO’s approval rating is holding steady while theirs is on the decline.

CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley did a good job tonight. They showed a poll stating 86% Disapproval of Repugs. It also showed that American’s blamed the Repugs instead of President Obama.

    Christie Calls out the ‘Crazies’
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie doesn’t want you to question his authority. Watch as he bites back at those who took offense to his recent appointment of a Muslim lawyer to the state bench.

So the President and First Lady is paying for the birthday dinner for President Obama. I am glad to hear that, so now what can the right wingnuts say? I’m sure they will fine sometime, but who cares. I hope they have a wonderful evening. Happy Birthday Mr. President.

Asked to survey the economy, 86 percent characterized it negatively – the highest number in two years. Only 12 percent characterized the economy positively. Asked who they trust more to guide the economy, 47 percent say Mr. Obama, while 33 percent say congressional Republicans. Fourteen percent say neither.
But Republicans fare worse: Seventy-two percent of Americans disapprove of their performance during the debt ceiling debate, while just 21 percent approve.
And Republicans get most of the blame for the standoff. Forty-seven percent blame Republicans in Congress, while 29 percent blame President Obama and congressional Democrats; 20 percent say both are to blame.A majority of Americans – 52 percent – says Republicans in Congress compromised too little in the debate. Fewer – 34 percent – say Democrats, including President Obama, compromised too little. Republicans were more likely to think members of their party compromised too little (34 percent) than to say they compromised too much (26 percent).

    A tweet from Jon Stewart:

@BarackObama! Happy Birthday President Obama We didn’t buy you a present because a lot of us are unemployed
    Yours, America.

So I shot him back a Tweet with this:

@TheDailyShow: U should start asking the GOP why are they stopping job bills that PBO layed out.maybe then U would hv a point

    Sick of him

    • August 4, 2011 at 10:20 pm

Jon Stewart is a hateful man, who blames President Obama for all the ills of the World, because he feels that President Obama should have been the Progressive slave and puppet. Jon is mad, because President Obama is independent from these crazies, and he really doesn’t need them at all.

Kasai, your response is on point.

Stewart is a jealous, little miserable manchild. This nasty tweet could have come from Sarah Palin.

      • August 4, 2011 at 10:40 pm

I think Jon Stewart think to much of his self. He is a nasty hateful punk. I have never watch the bastard and don’t plan to start.

If people done have a job you can’t lay the blame on President Obama, you blame the companies who is sitting on two trillion dollars and yet they refuse to hire people.

This tweet, more than anything else, proves how small this guy is. Cynical and mean.

And if I may add: he has become what he so despised in his media colleagues: superficial and lazy

I’m furious at Stewart, what a condescending smart-ass, my husband is furious too, he says Stewart is irresponsible and doesn’t care about the hard work being done by everyday Americans trying to keep this country out of the clutches of the Republican party. He’s a privileged jerk and I’ve never thought he was funny.

Anthony Weiner is the only unemployed person JS gives a damn about. I will not dignify the haters of President Obama by repeating their names. We know who they are.

The hatred JS has for President Obama didn’t start with the self inflicted demise of Anthony Weiner. When I heard JS hooked up with AH (#1 Bitch) for that look at me crap he and Colbert put on and then he gave Velma Hart (the planted token anti-Obama black woman from the Town Hall) an award, I knew EXACTLY where he and the whole group of Progressives (Republians at heart) were coming from. Besides trying but failing to tear President Obama from his true base of supporters (not the PL), JS is so predictable he stopped being funny a long time ago. The media’s beyond predictable.
