President Obama currently enjoys a higher popularity among Democratic voters than every Democratic president dating back to Harry Truman had at similar junctures in their presidencies. (Huffy Post)

      Hi, Michele,
Actually, I’m a retired public school teacher (or in Tea Party parlance, a socialist leech sucking on the public teat), but after 35 years of “early to bed, early to rise,” I just can’t break the habit.
Like you, I’m a TOD junkie who always need his morning fix. Have a wonderful day!

Hey Brian, enjoy your day and make a few phone calls to Washington, D.C., if you can.. If you go to Rhandi Rhodes website click on the crying baby and she has a link which is very easy to read and bother the hell out of some of those criminals on the Far Right..

        See ya later.

Here is some hilarious news and more proof that the arc of history bends toward justice: My crazy tea party rep., Joe Walsh, who has been all over the teevee with insane anti-Obama bashing, one of the worst of the teabaggers currently holding the country hostage, is being sued by his ex-wife for $100,000 in unpaid child support. All kinds of other shameful tidbits. Think the story was breaking in Chgo Sun Times but here is my local paper’s report —in his district: http://www.nwherald.com/2011/07/28/joe-walsh-sued-for-100k-in-child-support/aizlr5k/

    • July 28, 2011 at 7:20 am

Don’t throw stones if your ass lives in a glass house joe the smuck walsh… Do you think we would have ever known this information if he wasn’t willing to blow up the economy? my answer is no… On Rhandi Rhodes show she reported that China only owns 10% of USA debt and 65% is owned by Americans.. So as a proud American, I need this crap worked out so we don’t lose…

Add this story to his earlier foreclosure problems, and we have an accurate picture of Mr. Walsh as the typical “Do as I say, not as I do” Teapublican. The Sun Times also described this fool in an editorial as a “loud mouth with nothing to say.”

It’s the leading story on all the local Chgo news also. It’s so fitting. The teabagger who has been blasting Obama and the Dems about financial responsibility has lived a life of financial irresponsibility. A former campaign mgr. is suing him for $20,000 in unpaid salary, his home foreclosed, refusing to pay support for his 3 children while taking trips to Mexico and Italy with a girlfriend etc. His whole original campaign staff quit when they became familiar with him. He’s a disreputable snake. And every cable program has been featuring him shouting nonsensical rants about fiscal responsibility and airing his vid saying, “Stop lying, President Obama”. What in the world is this kind of person doing in Congress?

Very interesting. I think more research should be done on this gang of 80 or so tea baggers swept into office in 2010. I am sure there is a whole lot of hypocrisy going on among this bunch. They all need to be exposed. (slap me. I am sounding like Bachmann). 🙂

Of course these teabaggers are opportunists — public office is only their next grifting scheme. Like master grifters Palin and Bachmann, they will get a government salary, government benefits (including government healthcare!), government pension and so forth. These anti-government folks are making a living off of tax dollars.

They put the H in hypocritical. They’re all malformed personalities — narcissists, sociopaths, low IQs, selfish, greedy, and stupid.

      I hope they’re all exposed. 👿

I heard it was $117,000. Let’s get it right, I don’t want to look over a nickel of it. This guy has been one of the most OBNOXIOUS members of the tea party. He’s been in office for SEVEN MONTHS and you would think he had been elected President. It was clear from the very beginning that he was another republican jackass. Now we know he’s a “family” values” Republican that doesn’t take care of his kids. I am not surprised.

I suspect Joe Walsh is never to blame for the shit storms that surround him. Narcissistic, mean spirited jerk. I hope his salary as a US Rep is garnished…no reason he can’t pay off the $100,000 he owes his wife and still live off the approximately $75,000 remaining. He needs to meet his obligations just like the rest of us, unless of course he really is as ‘special’ as he seems to think he is.

Imagine how popular President Obama would be if we were enjoying healthier economic conditions. He would be off the charts. Keep up the excellence sir, you are our North Star.

Imagine going to court numerous times for 9 freaking years. That’s what his ex-wife did.

His salary is now 175,000 not including all the extras like the free lunches, free rides,

No way he can’t be pay her.

How many times did he call the President a liar?….

And when he went on Chris Matthews and referred to the President to Matthews as ”Your President” not even acknowledging that he was his President as well.

I was in shock of his lack of class. What a scumbag.

In some ways, Romney scares me the most: he has no soul, no moral compass and will do whatever his masters tell him to do. He is the perfect Stepford President for the evil cabal.

    • July 28, 2011 at 9:29 am

I still wonder if Meg Whitman has been repaid under the table for her “self-funding”. Sen. Johnson already has and he only self-funded $8M. Whitman dropped over $100M – California would have been HUGE in the ALEC/Koch plans, imagine what’s going on in Wisconsin or Florida in California.

I think one of the reasons Romney is liked by the Koch’s is that he has the ability to “self-fund”, especially late in the race, he could drop whatever money is needed and nobody would question it. Than a few years later the Koch Bros will payback the money he “self-funded”.

  12. July 28, 2011 at 9:22 am

Potentially a big day today, and Boehner’s plan will go to a vote in the House, and then even possibly the Senate. There was a theory floating about that Boehner will call an immediate recess after the vote and send everybody home until September. The reason being he is pretty cocksure when he talks about how the Senate will fold when they have no choice but to vote for the Boehner bill. However I think it would be terrible optics with the GOP essentially running out of Washington. Not to mention the Dem Reps would stay behind and could hold a killer presser in the half empty House with the Reid bill in hand. It would also give President Obama a killer case for emergency measures to raise the debt ceiling unilaterally.

Gahhh!!!!!!! Morning Joe is nuts this morning. Thank God for Lawrence or I would have lost my daman mind. Don’t get me wrong, Lawrence was somewhat annoying when he was talking about the debt ceiling debate and said PBO was playing games and manipulating everybody. That this was just a game for everyone in Washington and at the end of the day it looks like we’ll end up with a clean debt ceiling. He then said that though it was political machinations PBO has won the debate among democrats, independents and some republicans. That at the end of the day he comes out looking like the responsible adult, like an intelligent individual and strong leader who knows that compomise isn’t a dirty word. Joe Scarborough kept trying to insinuate all morning that PBO is weak, disinterested in running the country, that Boehner is the strong one.. yadi yada yah. At that point Lawrence was a Godsend. He lambasted Joe and the teabaggers for the mess the country is in right now. He defended the President and told Joe that he should stop crowing and counting his chickens before they’re hatched because President Obama has won this debate. He has successfully exposed the dangerous nature of the GOP and that when this debate is over, they’ll know that they should NEVER EVER count President Obama out. He told Joe that President Obama is smarter than all of them including Joe put together. That he always thinks 10 to 20 steps ahead and he knows exactly what he is doing; plus he has a crackshot White House team behind him and they are and have been A+ since this mess began. He pretty much shut Joe up. Joe’s face was like oh shit PBO is going to come out of this mess looking better than I thought and no matter how much mud I throw at him, it doesn’t seem to stick. He kept asking Lawrence if he was sure that PBO would come out better than the repubs in the polls. Lawrence’s expression was like how much of a dumbass are you? Even John Heileman said that PBO has pretty much won this debate and when the debt ceiling issue is resolved, look out for the polls because PBO would have gottem more independents and swing voters to get behind him.

The real meat of the show was when Cultist in Chief Grover Norquist came on to defend his no taxes pledge and Lawrence lit into him. I mean LIT INTO HIM!!!!!! It was a no holds barred drag down intellectual fight on Lawrence’s part. My goodness, on legislative issues Lawrence O’Donnell is a freaking enclyopedia of information. He decimated Grover and Joe with sheer brilliance and wit. He read a tweet from one of his viewers in which the viewer told Lawrence to punch Grover in the face and kick him hard in the shins for the mess he has contributed to. Mika was like oh that’s not fair, he’s not really responsible and Joe was like why would read that? That’s not fair. Really??!!!! That’s not fair? What about the messed up, deranged pledge he got congressmembers to sign effectively putting the majority of Americans and the economy into grave danger? Lawrence told Grover that he has a hand in this mess. That letting the Bush tax cuts expire is not raising taxes and what Grover is doing is akin to treason. He went on the attack and everytime Grover tried to explain himself he kept boxing himself into a corner. It was a thing of beauty. Lawrence just hit him with question after question. Why do you want the country to go into default? Do you understand that the debt ceiling has to be raised and will be raised? Are you going to primary the GOP members who vote to raise the debt ceiling? Why are you so comfortable screwing over the middle class and protecting the uber wealthy? Then Joe Scarborough tried to take on Lawrence with the meme that dems are cowards, have never and will never cut entitlements. Lawrence then turned to Joe and called him a LIAR!!!. He told him that he was better than that and he should stop lying. He kept saying “Joe you’re a LIAR!!!” He reminded Joe that when he (Joe) was in congress in the 90’s Clinton cut Medicare, that there were always spending cuts and tweaks to Medicare and a majority of congressmembers signed off on it; including democrats so he should stop peddling that untruth.

Joe then decided to try and shout Lawrence down as he usually does and Lawrence ripped him to shreds. Lawrence began yelling at him too and Joe backed off. It was a thing of beauty to witness. Joe then backtracked and tried to play the “responsible” republican and “concerned” citizen. He tried to say if dems had agreed to the GOP’s sensible tax cuts then the GOP would have agreed to closing tax loopholes. What a crock!!! Lawrence told him that this is not the GOP of the 90’s; that this is the GOP owned, bought, and controlled by that man! And then he pointed at Norquist. Joe then tried to portray Norquist’s tax pledge as reasonable by saying that he’s (Joe) not an ideologue and he would have signed Norquist’s pledge had he still been a member of congress and that he would have found a way to close tax loopholes that wouldn’t have violated the pledge. He kept trying to cozy up to Norquist; so Lawrence looked at Norquist and asked him if Joe decided to vote to close tax loopholes what would Grover do to him. Grover looked at Joe and told him point blank that he would primary him in a second. That stumped Joe because he had been defending Grover and yet Grover was willing to throw him under the bus. What Lawrence made everyone realize this morning is that Grover and his cult are dangerous and Grover would throw his mom under the bus if it meant he could screw over President Obama and the dems.

This is their twitter handles in case anyone wants to tweet anyone of them. Lawrence (@Lawrence or @TheLastWord) Joe (@joeNBC) Mika (@morningmika) and Grover (@GroverNorquist)

I refuse to watch Joe and his clique of arrogant, pompous , self righteous privileged children……..but in the past I have witnessed Lawrence in action. Fierce, and he comes with both barrels loaded with facts, he demands and defends the truth. He usually sends Joe scrambling up his tail pipe in search of cover. Lawrence destroys his credibility and usually pokes holes in that massive balloon that is Joe’s ego. Mika, the enabler and placater is worthless….she reminds me of a submissive housewife 50’s style, always standing by her man, soothing his ego and putting bandaids on his boo-boo’s. She is no role model for the woman of today.

I wonder if Grover Norquist will refuse to go on Lawrence’s show from here forward….he really needs to be exposed more fully to the American people. Someone also needs to hit home that our elected representatives should not be signing pledges to outside interest groups. None, zip, nada. The sworn oath they take to serve and protect the constitution and the people they serve should be the only pledge they are bound to. Enough of the dog and pony shows. And how is it that Norquists pledge is given greater clout than our own founding documents. Those that have signed it have been treating it with such reverance as if it were the Ten Commandments.
Sometimes I think we live in the United States of Stupid.

Really weird and O/T…..I slept poorly last night and was up and down. When I was sleeping I was having very lucid, ibuprofen fueled dreams. Ibuprofen has that effect on me. Anyway, a photograph of Mika and her Dad became the focus of one sequence of my dream. She was in her mid teens….I recognized her, and put alot of energy into studiying her appearance and the body language of both her and her father. Now I think it odd she is part of today’s conversation. Sorry for the detour.

I learned something yesterday…..I had a good night’s sleep last night because I didn’t watch ANY political shows after dinner. Monday night I watched LOD, and fought the debt ceiling all night. No more of that. Yesterday that calm feeling came to me…this is going to be okay. The President, Reid and Pelosi have got this. Boehner is the one who will fold.

Call them and tell them to vote against the Boehner plan. If it is defeated, it’s a huge blow to Boehner and a huge gain for Reid’s bill. If Boehner’s bill is defeated it could fracture the party completely.

Trent Franks is a NO vote. I called. That guy wouldn’t be happy unless we were all homeless, helpless and living out of garbage cans. I called Schweikert’s office and role played. I knew those damn thespian awards from high school would come in handy one day! In my best hilljack cowboy drawl, I asked if he was “gonna vote for that Boner Bill?” (yes, said Boner bill) She said he hadn’t decided yet was there anything I wanted to pass along to the congressman? I said, ” I think he oughta vote against that Boner Bill .Doesn’t go far enough. We need to cut out the waste and abuse. why don’t them Teaparty folks get their own bill? (knowing it would never happen) SHE GOT SO EXCITED, HER WHOLE TONE CHANGED. She thought she was going to get slammed about voting for this….she said “Ok I’ll let him know” asked my name, and I told her that I didn’t live in his district, put I say that he didn’t know what he was doing (bet she didn’t get that underhanded joke) and I thought that I would help him out! IT WAS PRICELESS!!!!! Fun. too:)

I know that if I called I would go way too far — I would start out with a drawl and telling them not to vote for the bill, but then I would have to take it too far: “Yeah, tell him not to vote for it, because we need to run this thing like a kitchen table and we don’t need no good credit rating, and I don’t care if we default and go bankrupt, we need to let this whole country burn down — we don’t need no highways or schools or clean water or clean air — we need to get rid of that devilish Social Security and Medicare and just live off the land — we just need to start from scratch and have Jeebus tell us what to do — I say we go back to just gold and bartering — all I need is my Bible and my guns ………….YEE-HAW!!!”

Got this from the OFA website comments

Sometimes I like to listen to conservative talk radio to hear the Republican’s talking point. On Mark Levin’s radio show he was going off on Boehner, McConnell, Wall Street Journal and every other RINO. He thinks the tea party is going to get screwed and is being thrown under the bus. Ironically he was ranting about how the Republicans always give in and how the Democrats always stick together (sound familiar).

When I hear these types of comments coming from both sides, I know that President Obama is governing from the center.

PBO knows what he’s doing. Compromise is not a dirty word.

Scenarios: Obama’s options if no deal on debt ceiling hike

(Reuters) – If the impasse over the U.S. debt limit is not broken soon, President Barack Obama will be forced to decide how he will manage the crisis.

The United States is drifting closer to a credit rating downgrade and default as Obama’s Democrats and their Republican rivals work on competing plans to cut spending and raise the debt ceiling.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and a small team of his aides have worked on contingency plans should Congress fail to raise the U.S. borrowing limit by an August 2 deadline.

Officials said on Wednesday the Treasury will lay out a plan in the next few days about how the government will operate if it appears Congress may miss the deadline.

Then I called the second one and she kept me on the phone for 10 minutes talking about the Bonehead’s bill saying that it is 2/3 of Baby Ryan’s bill and that the CBO only scored the first half of the bill that will cut $22 million in spending then an additional trillion over 10 years. She said :” it actually cuts more than it raises the debt ceiling.” Then she was like “since we only control 1/3 of government, getting 2/3s of what we want (the Ryan Plan) is pretty good.” I think Benishek is gonna vote for it bc his representative is already trying to sell Bonehead’s bill as the miracle of christ.

I couldn’t watch all of it on my creaky computer but what I did hear was fabulous. She reminded people that the bills coming out of Boehner’s House would kill jobs — about 2 million jobs. She was all about a real jobs bill “as our obligation” if we’re going to talk about cuts.

That is something that needs to be addressed — where do these cuts come from but putting more people out of work? I honestly think a lot of people don’t understand that. Last month’s dismal jobs numbers were because of mainly Republican governors laying off people.

That he also reported that President Obama raising $86 million was chump change and it didn’t mean anything. So I asked him if he could even raise $1 let alone $86 million. I thought it would go nowhere and then lo and behold he tweeted me back trying to intimidate me and asking me for evidence. I sent him the evidence, kept tweeting him and calling him out. Guess what his reply was; he BLOCKED me on twitter. Hahahaha. When confronted with the truth, he couldn’t face it so he blocked me. I still kept on tweeting him and calling him out and then a bunch of people who follow me on twitter began tweeting him also and they called him out. He began blocking some of them too, but they didn’t give up. Me thinks Tapper has a thin skin. He can dish out crap but he can’t handle truth. So keep tweeting him folks because trust me he reads those tweets.

I am really incensed……I’ld leave the Republicans out of it, it is even more cut and dry than party politics. This guy reinvents the facts to serve his own alternate reality. July 28, 2011 at 12:22 pm

Here is Steve Benen explaining the differences between Speaker Boehner’s plan and Majority Leader Harry Reid’s plan. I don’t expect lazy media stenographers like Jake (with the permanent snarl) Tapper to spend the time to see that Boehner’s plan is a train wreck and that Senator Reid’s plan represents a “real” compromise where both sides don’t get everything they want. The media has failed us.

The differences between the Reid, Boehner plans

But Jonathan Bernstein goes further, noting that for the left, Reid’s plan is “much, much better” than Boehner’s.

The first difference is the total cuts. Everyone is emphasizing that Reid’s front-line totals are very similar to Boehner’s. But bookkeeping cuts, which analysts are ignoring, buy Reid an extra year of debt-limit extension in exchange for, basically, nothing at all, meaning that Reid slashes government far less than Boehner does. […]

The second set of differences is harder to see from the details that have been reported so far, but they’re about timing and location of the cuts. By all accounts, the revamped Boehner plan is going to be more frontloaded than was his initial offer, because Republicans (to some extent with good reason) don’t trust future Congresses to be bound by decisions made now. Liberals prefer backloaded cuts, partially because they’re less real, but especially because liberals believe that up-front cuts will hurt the economy more while it’s still fragile at best. This is another way that the Reid plan is superior.

I was listening on NPR hearing the teapartier Hse Reps say they have already compromised when putting this plan out. Redefinition of compromise now is it is a compromise when you do it among your own party, nevermind the opposition party. In other words, the compromise is that you didn’t get as much as you wanted so that is the compromise not needing to give the other side anything they wanted.
The sad part is the nonthinking GOP voters accept that without even thinking about what they really just said and how it makes no sense in the traditional model.

The fact is, and that’s beyond pathetic, is that they TRULY believe that raising the debt ceiling is giving the President a blank check for more spending.

John Boehner : The Whipped Puppy On A Short Leash

The debt ceiling debate has turned into an exercise in stupidity on the Republican side because unless the Speaker clears his party’s proposals with teabaggers and ultra-conservatives, he will lose their support and eventually, his job as speaker. Boehner coveted the speaker’s job and cried like a baby when he assumed the position and is most likely crying every night at the realization that he is no more in charge of Republicans in the House than a Democratic legislative aide.

    • July 28, 2011 at 12:52 pm

You know, Boehner has had leadership problems before. He was thrown out when he was chairman of the House Republican Conference back in the late 90s.

    • July 28, 2011 at 1:12 pm

And you know who’s sitting in the wings and could very well be a big instigator in all of this right? You guess right, baby Cantor. The smell of opportunism is somthing that he could very well welcome.

      The plot thickens.

The following is a post from a person named Zhana on the OFA website regarding the 14th amendment. (I hope she doesn’t mind that I’m posting her comment here, but I’ve been reading her posts for years now and she’s as smart as a whip):

“Some unconventional wisdom… [had a few minutes to think about the 14th amendment.]

People are asking why President Obama won’t use the 14th amendment as an option to raise the debt ceiling. Specifically, they ask why he wouldn’t at least use the threat as leverage? My response to that is simple… the GOP would take that option. They would be more than happy to have the President raise the limit alone and trigger a constitutional crisis.

The debt ceiling will be raised by congress. There is no question about that. But what if it wasn’t… what could the President actually do unilaterally? The President is mandated by the constitution to pay the bills that congress has authorized, so why couldn’t he simply keep doing whatever is necessary to pay them? Why can’t he just ignore the debt ceiling; not raise it, just ignore it? If they took him to court and said he violated the law by paying the bills, he could point to his constitutional mandate. If they said that he exceeded his borrowing authority, he could use the 14th amendment to say that the debt of the government could not be questioned [and thus, needed to be paid]. He could then say that it was the responsibility of the U.S. Congress to ensure that the debt limit was high enough to cover all of the spending they authorized – and they failed to do so. That failure, however, did not change his mandate to pay for spending already authorized.

Conclusion: President Obama does not have the authority to raise the debt ceiling, but the constitutional mandate to not question the validity of the debt [along with his executive duties to pay those debts] should be all of the authority needed to keep borrowing. The debt ceiling is thus a congressional issue that should be considered when congress authorizes spending… not when treasury pays for what has been authorized”.

I love Zhana. I wish to high heaven she would cross post here or at BWD, but she steadfastly refuses to. Pity. Great wit and keen perspective.

I love Zhana’s posts also. She doesn’t post as regular as she used to. I am surprised at democrats like Rep. Clyburn urging PBO to use the 14th amendment.

Thanks for this levelheaded and very insightful post. I have been thinking along the same lines. What is fascinating is if we default it will be because CONGRESS ABDICATED IT’S RESPONSIBILITY to ensure our debts are paid and did not raise the debt ceiling as they have routinely done in the past. If President Obama uses his authority to instruct Treasury to keep borrowing HE WILL BE FULFILLING HIS OATH OF OFFICE to the Constitution. So, if congress won’t do their job, we can count on the only adult in the room to do his.

    • July 28, 2011 at 1:29 pm

Thanks, Janelle. Zhana is a great source of analysis.

Because Congress has appropriated past and current spending programs knowing full well that they can’t all be paid for from current revenues, it makes sense that they authorize the President to borrow the shortfall, however implicit. The debt-ceiling vote is a kind of extraconstitutional double bind since, if it fails, Congress cannot simply disappropriate previously-appropriated spending. Only a law that is passed by both houses and signed by the President can do that so it makes this whole situation completely untenable and anybody who says they know what to do is lying.

Deadbeat dad Joe Walsh on CNN this morning:

I know that story just broke, and it’s interesting that it just broke right now as I’m out there trying my best to fight this President and fight the Democrats and solve this debt crisis. But look, I’m the most openly vetted candidate in the world. I have had financial troubles and I talked about them throughout the campaign. This is where real America is.

I’m the most openly vetted candidate in the world??? The arrogance of this jerk had no bound.

And no you moron, it’s not where real America is. Not paying child support…..

    • July 28, 2011 at 1:16 pm

Wow. What an arse. What excuse does he have now that he has a job paying $175,000 a year?

Dead beat dad should be tweeted to no end from her to the end of the world.

Anyone knows if he ever had his license suspended. Some states do this, don’t they.

Hey Africa, Joe Walsh did have his license suspended twice and in 2008 he was caught for driving on a suspended license. People have been tweeting him by the droves on twitter. It’s nuts out there. He has been getting slammed from all quarters. Most especially by Medicare recipients (Fiesty grandmas and grandpas 😉 ) They’ve been tweeting and calling him out for receiving givt benefits but being a deadbeat dad. The trending hashtag was #RepJoeWalshDeadBeatDad 😆 He can dish it out but can’t take it.

The man is dishonest. It was amazing the number of lies he told in his five minute rebuttal to President Obama. As Steve Benen says, if you had been playing a drinking game the winner would have had alcohol poisoning. I can’t bare to watch him. He is a total embarrassment.

Hi, my dear TOD Family. I had to run out to pick up an essential medication for my procedure for next week. I am weak but, I will not give up and in to whatever is out there. So I was eager to get back to catch up here. I tuned in to hear the speeches on the Debt and Deficit by the Senators. Now speaking is Senator Frank Lautenberg from N Jersey, and he is giving a great speech. He is handing it to the behinds of the destructive Repubs., and he slipped and called Speaker Boehner Speaker Boner. Me thinks he or his staff has been reading the blogs. I wish he had said something else, but ok. Sen. Jack Reed RI, is speaking now. Love you all HZ

Nate Silver said blah, blah, blah, blah, blah…who the hell is Nate Silver? Where did/does he get his information from? Who crowned him? He said PBO is losing his base and if his numbers keep going down, (something about a 2-1 something or another) When Chris Matthews said Nate was going to be on the show today, I turned the channel…I am going to go walking (need to let go of some of this stress).

Must be that 5% or less of fauxgressives and independents he’s talking about (snark). You know, PBO’s base. Never like nor trusted that little geek Nate Silver.
