“every man cannot have his way in all things”

*****

President Obama speaks in a prime-time address to the nation on July 25 from the East Room of the White House

Thomas Jefferson: “Every man cannot have his way in all things…Without this mutual disposition, we are disjointed individuals, but not a society.”

Earlier today:

Statement by White House press secretary Jay Carney:

“The President has been advocating a balanced plan that would reduce our deficit by $4 trillion by making large cuts in domestic and Pentagon spending, reforming entitlement programs, and closing tax loopholes for corporations, millionaires and billionaires. This sort of approach won support from Democrats and Republicans in the Senate, but the House Republicans walked away after insisting that the budget be balanced on the backs of seniors and the middle class.

“Now, faced with the ‘my way or the highway,’ short-term approach of the House Republicans, Senator Reid has put forward a responsible compromise that cuts spending in a way that protects critical investments and does not harm the economic recovery. All the cuts put forward in this approach were previously agreed to by both parties through the process led by the Vice President. Senator Reid’s plan also reduces the deficit more than enough to meet the contrived dollar-for-dollar criteria called for by House Republicans, and, most importantly, it removes the cloud of a possible default from our economy through 2012. The plan would make a meaningful down payment in addressing our fiscal challenge, and we could continue to work together to build on it with a balanced approach to deficit reduction that includes additional spending reforms and closing tax loopholes for corporations, millionaires and billionaires.

”Senator Reid’s plan is a reasonable approach that should receive the support of both parties, and we hope the House Republicans will agree to this plan so that America can avoid defaulting on our obligations for the first time in our history. The ball is in their court.”

OMG!!! I hope he doesn’t do it from the Oval Office. I’ve ALWAYS thought that he resonates more standing up. He looks more imposing, like he’s just inches away from kicking ass. Hope he does his message from the room where he made the OBL announcement. Maybe repugs will pick up the subliminal message that he’s gonna kick the shit outta them.

From the East Room where he spoke the last 2 times, not Oval office.

      • July 25, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Thanks dot. I know it doesn’t matter, but that’s how I prefer to see him talk to the American people. It’s like he’s power magnified 10 fold in front of a podium.

    • July 25, 2011 at 5:00 pm

While I would usually agree, I think I’d be okay with a Oval Office setting as it would really set the tone for how serious this is. However If he uses the same set-up as when he announced the bin Laden killing that would be pretty powerful as well.

I think Speaker Boehner is thumbing his nose at the American people and making a mockery of our democracy. He should be arrested for dereliction of duty. I can’t imagine how this man was ever given a leadership position. He is a total embarrassment and he is dangerous.

Boehner to Dems: I’ll see your plan and raise you another

    =============================================

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) presented his debt-reduction plan this afternoon, which appears to offer a way out of the debt-ceiling crisis Republicans created. Indeed, by most sensible measure, Reid is offering the GOP everything it wants.

So, House Republicans will gladly accept the offer and end this painful, dangerous fiasco? Of course not. Around the same time, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) put the finishing touches on his own plan, presenting it first to Rush Limbaugh, then to his own GOP caucus.

Everything about it is shameless. As Ezra Klein noted, even the title is a pathetic joke: “Note that the title isn’t ‘An approach to raising the debt ceiling,’ or ‘An approach to reducing the deficit and cutting spending.’ It’s the: ‘Two-Step Approach to Hold President Obama Accountable.’”

    • July 25, 2011 at 5:02 pm

I have never disliked a Speaker so much in my lifetime, short of Newt. And he presented it to Rush Limbaugh first?? What a freaking TOOL. These people do not work for US- they work for a radio announcer, a sick, ignorant, racist, radio announcer.

I honestly no longer have any idea how this is all going to pan out- it is evident that Boehner and his bitches have no intention on agreeing to anything sensible or reasonable and are purely out to sabotage POTUS and all of America in the process.

I’ll say it again- anyone who votes Republican after this is a fool.. and frankly I’m starting to believe – not American… at least they do not have Americans in their best interests.

It’s all about trying to destroy Obama so he won’t be re-elected, as McConnell very helpfully and shamelessly admitted. With right wing think tanks sending out missives to “blow it up” (Lawrence O’Donnell) and Trump advising to not agree to anything, the same as many other nuts, and Ia. Rep. King saying Obama will be impeached if there’s a default, which they are trying to cause, it doesn’t seem now like there is ANYTHING to which the Repubs will agree. This is a dangerous, very damaging game they’re playing. Hardball just saying that Obama will make clear that there is nothing that the Repubs will accept, it’s not about debts and deficits, they’ve offered what they want and they still refuse to agree. It should become clear to the American people it is all about trying to destroy the American President.

This John Cole comment from a post back in February 2009 haunts me everyday as we watch this breakdown in our democracy. This is just tragic. It makes you wonder why there isn’t some minimum level of intelligence required to run for a seat in congress. These people are responsible of oversight of the budget and they don’t understand basic monetary policy or economics 101. It is breathtaking the number of unhinged and deranged members there are in the Republican Party.

        =====================================================

I really don’t understand how bipartisanship is ever going to work when one of the parties is insane. Imagine trying to negotiate an agreement on dinner plans with your date, and you suggest Italian and she states her preference would be a meal of tire rims and anthrax. If you can figure out a way to split the difference there and find a meal you will both enjoy, you can probably figure out how bipartisanship is going to work the next few years.

        – John Cole (February 5, 2009)

Right, we need to get that gavel back in Nancy’s hands. She’s my hero. I posted this at bwd today….\s

            Deep thought….

When Nancy Pelosi was Speaker of the House, there were bill signings every other week. She got things done. The legislation passed by the House of Representatives was amazing. Unfortunately, there were over 400 bills passed by the House that were ignored by the senate. But Speaker Pelosi’s list of accomplishments is outstanding.

Since the Republican Party took the majority in the House of Representatives, how many bill signings have there been under Speaker John Boehner???

I remember reading on The Moscow Times English language site in 2009 about a Russian historian’s prediction of the collapse of America after PBO’s election to the presidency. His prediction included the division of the country into separate “states,” similar to America under the Articles of Confederation. At the time, I dismissed it, but, now I’m wondering if somehow he knew more about some Americans than I ever thought possible–that there are some of us who are willing to tear this country to pieces to restore power to themselves.

Is it weird that I am super excited for the prime time address to the nation? I’m on the edge of my seat because it is must watch tv and I know President Obama will have his ‘A’ game. I’m practically snapping, crackling and popping like a rice krispee. Wooooohooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • July 25, 2011 at 5:06 pm

I am too.. and yet for the first time I’m ‘concerned’ also. I am certain that Boehner or one of his dogs will speak after POTUS.. and I fully expect them to call POTUS a liar… etc in front of the whole country. This is unlike me to worry in this way.. but I think it’s because I know the media (without even watching them) has most likely been spinning alll of these ‘negotiations’ as Repubs being the smart, good guys with a PLAN and casting doubts on President Obama.

        July 25, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Yup. Just had Chris Matthews on for about 5 min, and David Corn and I forget the other guy, say that the Republicans are winning because they won’t give in, and President Obama should not have given in on the tax cuts issue back in December.

        • July 25, 2011 at 5:21 pm

Corn and Fineman are both idiots who know nothing. They can suck it.

        • July 25, 2011 at 5:23 pm

They are lying, because most of America agree with what Obama wanted to do. A balance approch. So they are lying.

        • July 25, 2011 at 5:51 pm

This is what rots Washington, D.C., and the so-called press. They are concerned with the whose winning and whose losing, taking their freaking eyes completely off the ball.

The fact of the matter is that the Republicans manufactured this crisis and instead of talking about that the so-called press wants to talk about esthetics. That’s why it is so hard watching them.

I have an adverse reaction to any of these guys sitting on TV talking about what they think they know.

          July 25, 2011 at 6:07 pm

These pundits suck. Sound like David Corn been listening to the PL.

          • July 25, 2011 at 7:48 pm

Corn is a PL, and Fineman he works for Huffington Post. No respect for either of them. I sent two emails to Chris Matthews and told him that most of American side with the President. So who is winning? I told Matthews that people do not understand how these crazy Republicans can bring this country to the brink of destruction. Most Americans see that this President have tried working with Boehner and the Republicans, but it’s there way or no way. So in my opinion both of them was wrong, and 2012 we will show you stupid media how wrong they were. Pass that on to your buddies will you Chris. I told him that and much more.

        • July 25, 2011 at 7:17 pm

I’m too furious to be excited and very sad that it has come to this, that the obstructionist nutballs have caused this unnecessary crisis, and that President Obama has to go around the media reporting again to try to impart some truths to the American people. This is a disgusting state of affairs. I have never seen such hate, and that’s what it is, directed at any president. That’s a really good move. I hope everyone watching will start burning down the wires tomorrow letting their Congressional representatives know just how we, the people, feel about this betrayal by the Republicans and how we demand cooperation with our duly elected President who has earned the people’s trust. Let them know that they are not fulfilling their Constitutional responsibilites and that no amount of money from their wealthy backers will save them from the wrath of the people who have had enough.

I posted this yesterday as my first ever post on this site, but in light of the President speaking tonight, I wanted to post it again. If for no other reason than it would flatter me if he even did anything resembling what I wrote. He no doubt has this under control, but I think the only way this gets resolved is if the American people know that pretty much every single Republican opposing a clean debt-limit increase has voted for it before. We are seriously witnessing the biggest hypocritical event in political history, and most people don’t know. The media isn’t going to deliver the news, the President needs to.

“Long time lurker, first time poster. The thought occurred to me yesterday that if the President and Democrats, and more importantly, the country is going to win this battle (and this is literally a battle), President Obama needs to go on national television and speak directly to the people. Tonight would be a great time to do it. Sunday night is the best night to do something like this. Make every network cover his talk. First explain what the debt ceiling means, since most people don’t know. Then explain where the vast majority of our current debt has comes from (i.e. Bush tax cuts and the two wars). Then point out how often the debt ceiling has been raised before, without so much as a second thought. Quote Reagan and other Republicans. Then go in for the hammer. List the number of Republicans currently in the House that previously voted to raise the debt ceiling but refuse to now. While you can’t list all those names on tv, have the communications office put together a list of all the Republicans that fit that category, give it out to the media, particularly all the major newspapers in their districts, and make the local press ask these fools why they voted to raise the debt ceiling before but not now. Then specifically name Boehner and Cantor. List every single time they voted for raising the debt limit and the year.

Then ask the question out loud. It is a tough question that I know the President has avoided asking, but it needs to be asked out loud. Why is this vote so different now than for every other president? Even Bill Clinton didn’t have this issue? Why when he is president? Is there desire to hurt me politically so paramount to them that they are willing to ruin America’s economy to score political points?

Then follow this up with specific details of what a default would mean to people. Talk about the jobs that would no longer be funded. Talk about what would happen to social security, etc.

I’m serious, if Democrats don’t playing “fucking hardball” now, then when?”

Is Reid still putting his plan to vote tonight? If he has the votes (assuming he does) it would be great optics to have President Obama say that it passed the Senate, or that the GOP blocked it in the Senate. And if it passes the Senate without any GOP votes it could then be highlighted that giving them exactly what they wanted isn’t enough anymore. That they want to gut social security and medicare while protecting the millionaires and billionaires, and that they can’t say yes to anything because they’re fringe right wants a default.

      • 68 utaustinliberal
        July 25, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Don’t rejoice yet Me4obama. Jordan said the reason he rejected Boehner’s plan was because it didn’t have a Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA). A BBA would require 3/4ths of the 50 states to approve it or 2/3rds of both chambers to approve it and it would be a constitutional amendment that bascially says before the federal govt can do anything now and in the future, it needs to be fully paid for. So if there’s a natural disaster or some country that needs aid or stuff like that, we’d need a majority (2/3rds) of both the house and senate to approve it before money can be doled out. can you imagine any money being doled out with the kind of teabagger congress we’re stuck with?

    • July 25, 2011 at 5:28 pm

I knew this would happen- Boehner give a speech after POTUS. This truly disgusts me that he is given equal time by the knuckledragging press.. the time in which he will use to LIE to the American people. If I was living in Baltimore now instead of in ND.. I swear to heaven I’d be living on the steps of Congress I’m so disgusted.

      • July 25, 2011 at 6:32 pm

Have you seen Bonehead speak? Trust me, we have NOTHING to worry about 😕
ps- the press are a-holes. 🙄

        • July 25, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Yes Lisa I agree with you on Boehner- what I am thinking about is that Boehner is going to lie, that he is being given equal time by the media in order to lie and attack POTUS in front of the American Public.. just the other day when he spoke after President Obama- Luke Russert then tweeted how “passionate” Boehner is. Its all this effortless assistance the media insists on giving republicans while they’re busy literally trying to tear this country apart. I hate that people are believing the media, and some will believe Boehner tonight. I realize they are in the minority- but it’s not for lack of trying on the part of repubs and the media. I don’t like POTUS being backed into a corner by these stupid stupid republicans- whether they be in Congress or in the media.

I never doubt POTUS- I despise all of the underhandedness and all of the scheming and I do not trust anyone but him anymore.

          • July 25, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Luke Russert is a disgrace to his father’s legacy. The only word I would use to describe Bonehead’s presser on Friday was “weepy.” Every 10 seconds he looked as though he was gonna break down and cry. I hope tonight he finally lets the dam open. Can you imagine that tool crying on National tv during his address?! The American people will be so disgusted, they’ll tar and feather him.

          July 25, 2011 at 6:43 pm

He blasted a teapublican from the house who tried to blame President Obama for the intrasigency that is the debt ceiling debate. The teapublican said that PBO was such big spender and that’s why we’re in this hell hole. Rev Al blasted him with the chart from the NYT that showed Bush spent about $5.5 trillion and President Obama has only spent $1.4 trillion. He pointed out that the Bush tax cuts, the war in Iraq where we were supposed to find magical weapons of mass destruction and the big drug bill basically sunk the economy and PBO’s spending was to stop the hemorrhaging. The teabagger tried to walk back his statement and pretend that he doesn’t like GWB and his policies. Rev Al also pointed out that according to Forbes 400 of the richest people in America keep making a shitload of money and it keeps driving 60% of lower income earners into poverty. Yet the GOP wants to give the rich more tax breaks. The teabagger kept mumbling crap about some defense bill he wants to introduce that’ll slash defense spending inhumanely and somehow that money will trickle down to the middle and working class. Rev Al pretty much eviscerated him.

          • July 25, 2011 at 7:10 pm

    • July 25, 2011 at 6:14 pm

Okay. I’m tired of Bill Clinton! I am so tired of people giving Clinton more credit than he deserves! Clinton was a _____ whose only notable contribution to history was his attempted impeachment because he couldn’t resist sticking his weiner where it shouldn’t have been. The entire reason the 90s was so successful was because of the Internet and major headway in the relationship between tech and business. Bill Clinton in this Administration would be a HUGE disaster since Bill obviously doesn’t realize that he’s NOT president anymore. He should stay the hell outta PBO’s business. I never saw Bush 41 sticking his nose in Clinton’s presidency! Not even Bush 43 does that! Clinton and his looney left minions should fuck off!!!!!
ps- Rev. Al showing graph of the debt under bush and PBO. hahahahahahahhahahhaha. Now he’s showing another graph: the 400 richest people on Forbes makes more than 60% of US working population!

Also Clinton did not enter office with the huge mess that Bush left. I hate to say it, but Clinton was not the first black president. No one can be compared to PBO. Tweety did this special calling Clinton “President of the world” or something to that effect. I did not watch it. He is obsessed with Clinton.

Cos, please don’t “hate” to say what is true, because Bill Clinton, who I voted for 2 times, was and always will be a white man. President Barack Hussein Obama is our first black president, with a really dark black father from Kenya, in Africa. I’m stressing this not for your sake, but for anyone who lurks here, and ever had the idea that Clinton was our first black president. The fact that he played a lousy sax and ate greasy food, and sniffed behind loose women does not in my mind make him like my son, who does none of these things. Furthermore, I wish he’d take his old wrinkled self home somewhere and tend to his fortunes and foundations, and stop trying to act like we don’t recall his race baiting during the ’08 primaries. And Lisa is correct. He presided over a healthy economy due to new technologies…how lucky was that?

Way too few to overcome the tea party caucus exiting Boehner’s plan. As I’ve written several times before, the only way Boehner gets legislation out of the House that the President would consider signing is if Speaker (ALWAYS) Pelosi delivered a significant chunk of Democratic Party votes. That remains even more true now.

In any event, I do not think the President will allow the 14th Amendment to be violated should Boehner fail to do his job.

But it has to be done very carefully – the GOP are literally frothing at the mouth over IMPEACHMENT. They believe the 14th is their Golden Ticket. As if anything Obama does regarding the 14th is grounds for Impeachment: If he raises the ceiling since he has no authority to do so = Impeachment. If he doesn’t pay the debtors (they think there is just enough money to pay them) = Impeachment.

What all of their scenarios fail to see is that it’s CONGRESS’S imperative to pay America’s bills. PERIOD. So I guess that’s where their lust for impeachment blinds them – they can’t see that it’s CONGRESS who needs to be impeached for not doing it’s duty.

Is that possible? If impeachment starts in the House, how does the House impeach itself?

If it is true that moat legal scholars agree that President Obama could cite the 14th Amendent and override the gop circus and no court will overide POTUS. the argument is that these haters in congress would need to show precisely that they were personally hurt in order for them to bring a legal case against him. then I think President may just do that in the end

    • 145 tally
      July 25, 2011 at 6:19 pm

I think Obama should threaten every member of CONGRESS with Impeachment who won’t vote on a clean debt ceiling increase through 2012 to pay for the budget THEY PASSED, since not doing so would be intentionally tanking the US/GLOBAL ECONOMY and that would definitely be considered a HIGH CRIME, since it goes against their oath of office, and THE LAW.

          July 25, 2011 at 9:55 pm

Bush has even more reason to detest Perry now. Bush pleaded with Perry not to execute a Mexican national who was on death row in TX. Perry ignored all of his pleas, and the execution was carried out. Bush tried to tell him that the man had not received due process per the terms of a U.S. treaty with Mexico, but it fell on deaf ears. Perry didn’t care. He had a point to make, and he had to satisfy the tea partiers in his state. He did the same thing in the Todd Willingham case. Willingham was executed for arson. A panel of experts in investigating arson was on the verge of releasing data that would have shown that Willingham didn’t start the fire that killed his daughters. Perry couldn’t have this, so he replaced some members of the government agency which had requested the investigation with persons loyal to him, and the results of the investigation never saw the light of day. He’s a total douche-bag who cares only for himself.

Wow. I just sent Jeremy Gaines at NBC an e-mail telling him that we are tired of seeing the same only tired guest hosts on TV giving us their opinions about something that they truly have no expertise on. I told him that a traffic cop lucky enough to get a gig on TV could pontificate all day long. I invited him to peruse some of the blogs and get his producers to pluck up folks like Eclectablog, etc.

Little Russert, for example, would never have had a job at MSNBC were it not for his father, Tim russert. Just like I told Gaines, there are so many self-proclaimed journalists these days who are ill prepared to come into our living rooms. On the other hand, some our bloggers are so much more well versed in the topics they discuss. Over at TPV for example, Deaniac knows what he’s talking about when he writes a piece.

I challenged Gaines to do away with the same old stale guests and tap into these new voices.

In the meantime, nepotism lives in the media.

      Go figure.

Rev Al Sharpton is hands down the best political commentator on MSNBC. He’s a fucking genius of a mastermind. His closing statement was EPIC and had me yelling fuck yeah!!!!!! with the way he delivered it. When the video comes out everyone needs to go to http://www.msnbc.com and click on msnbctv and find Rev’s July 25, 2011 (that’s today) show; especially the closing statement.

He pointed how the GOP refer to the rich as the “job creators.” He basically said, “oh yeah they’re job creators alright. Job creators who have wrecked our economy. Job creators who have pocketed all the profits and keep making the poor poorer. Oh yeah they’re job creators alright. What the GOP will never tell you is that these job creators only create jobs ABROAD!!!!!! I’m so sorry for calling them out. I apologize for waking the American people up to the practices of these “job creators.” I can only promise to do better. I can only promise to keep informing the American people everyday just what great wonders these job creators accomplish. I’m the Reverend Al Sharpton. Goodnight. Remember to watch President Obama’s speech and Hardball starts right now!”

It was fantastic!! He’s so freaking good…..He nailed it……that’s where the job creators create jobs….abroad….

Something is really bothering me though….what’s with all the criticism he’s getting …from Olbermann, Johnathan what’s his name…and others..it doesn’t stop.

It seems to be more than just being a supporter of the President…….comparing him to Beck….lack of class and whatnot…

I find it appalling…..he’s fantastic and very entertaining and informative.

I think Jonathan Schuler and Keith Olbermann are pissed of that their leftie buddy Cenk Ugyur got kicked out by MSNBC. It was Cenk’s fault. His numbers were crap, he was pissing off the producers and no guests wanted to come on the show, because he was aggressively and unnecessarily combative. He just attacked, attacked, attacked and he lacked substance. But Cenk has been spreading the false rumor that the White House didn’t like how he criticized President Obama and sent word for him to be fired. White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer released a statement saying the White House had no part to play in Cenk’s tv demise. MSNBC also released a statement saying the White House had no part in their decision making process and they offered Cenk another time slot and weekend anchoring but he refused. Schuler and Olbermann are probably pissed off that Sharpton always sheds light on the great job that PBO is doing, provides factual info, is gaining a huge following, has great ratings and was ultimately hired by the will of the people. We wrote, we tweeted, we emailed, we called and we got our man on tv. As far as I’m concerned they can SUCK IT. 😉

What an ego. Yeah PBO was to blame for Uygar getting the boot, if that was the case, how come Ed and Rachel are still there? Both criticize PBO as much as Uygar did.

          Uygar can go fuck himself.

I don’t know who Schuler is and Olbermann has lost his mind, months ago, and so I join you in that both of these individuals can go pound sand. The disdain and disrespect being thrown towards Sharpton is simply a confirmation of what I think about the Professional Left and yet another illustration of their contempt for President Obama’s base even as they attempt to co-opt our voices and misappropriate the fruits of our labor. Until recently, the actual base had zero voice and zero representation in the media; thank God that is changing.

  43. July 25, 2011 at 7:25 pm

If Boehner lost 90 votes, he’s going to need 65 Dems to get to 218 and there is no way that happens given his current bill. I hope his Wall Market money men are really hammering him now – Boehner’s games have put America on the brink of default and there could be nothing he could do to prevent it. He better start seeing if he could get 50 votes for a clean raise and hope Pelosi could get 168 of her 190 at this point.

  44. July 25, 2011 at 7:29 pm

How can Pres. Obama screw with Boehner tonight? Announce his address 45 minutes and then stop early so Boehner isn’t ready and flustered, or announce it will be about 35 minutes and go 10+ minutes longer so Boehner has to sit and wait and get all pissed off and frustrated?

    CBPP Statement: July 25, 2011
    For Immediate Release

Statement: Robert Greenstein, President, on House Speaker Boehner’s New Budget Proposal

House Speaker John Boehner’s new budget proposal would require deep cuts in the years immediately ahead in Social Security and Medicare benefits for current retirees, the repeal of health reform’s coverage expansions, or wholesale evisceration of basic assistance programs for vulnerable Americans.

The plan is, thus, tantamount to a form of “class warfare.” If enacted, it could well produce the greatest increase in poverty and hardship produced by any law in modern U.S. history.

This may sound hyperbolic, but it is not. The mathematics are inexorable.

The talking heads are mad because PBO is not letting them do the talking for him…he learned the hard way during the health care reform debates. PBO couldn’t rely on MSM nor his own party members to tell the truth…the dems lost control of the message. So, this time around PBO has decided to tell the american people what is really going on and the talking heads are mad because he is doing what they should be doing…reporting the facts.

  115. July 25, 2011 at 9:41 pm

  116. 326 nintendowii10
    July 25, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Apparently Bonehead lost 90 members of HIS OWN CAUCUS WITH HIS OWN PLAN, yet he says PBO is to blame.

It’s clearly showing that Bonehead is a desperate man when he can’t even get his own caucus onboard to support his own plan, then he turns around and says PBO is the one who can’t say “YES.” PBO is already taking heat for these major cuts just negotiating them.

We Obamabots need to do the job of getting Bonehead out of the Speakership, which means giving the House back to Democrats. Meaning we have to get the message out that they are not the ones wanting to protect corporate jet owners and those at the top, that the Democrats want to do their best to help those at the very bottom.

    • July 25, 2011 at 9:50 pm

They bailed because it wasn’t far enough right. So either Boehner will have to call up Pelosi (fat chance) or he’ll need to move the bill further right again and then hope that he can peel off four Dem senators. His master plan is to get a bad bill to Presidents desk and dare him not to sign it. Reid/Schumer are a firewall against that, just need to lock down caucus – esp Nelson, Manchin, Landrieu, Pryor, Webb, McCaskill types.

The President spoke as the President of the United States. I can’t lie I wish he has said more then I realize this was classic POB. He is getting the people involved. John Boehner….well the man came across as a true Teahead. He destroyed even what the President had just said about him. His message came across as a personal hit on the President.

Are we to call only John Boehner…and do we start tonight?

The media should be included in these phone calls for complaining that he did not make any news tonight. I was listening to Melissa Harris right after the speech on L. O’Donnell and boy did she sound like a PL. She said that each time PBO hold one of these pressers he helps the GOP by showing that WA is really broken, just like the prepugs keep saying. I don’t see it that way at all.

Melissa is a ditz with an education. She remarked last week on Rev Al’s radio show how supportive she was for Debbie Wasserman Schultz and that jackass who insulted her, but then Melissa turns around and says she worries that the t-party jackass might be labeled an angry black man. I was incredulous, like, do I care if he’s labeled angry by whites after he has joined with racist whites to attack not only PBO, but Debbie, and all the rest of us Obama supporters? Melissa needs to listen to herself more before she opens her mouth. I think she’s had it a little easy and doesn’t fully understand that blacks from the hood don’t consider you a brotha if you turn on another.

She didn’t hear his address to the nation. Maybe she had cotton in her ears. PBO spoke to Americans’ frustration with the way Washington works, and when he asked people to call their members in Congress, I took it as a call to action and for assistance in getting them to do their d@mn jobs!

        • July 25, 2011 at 10:30 pm

That is why I tune them out. They always come out with their elaborate explanations and then the next day, the public tells them to shut up with their nonesense.

Everybody wants to think they know so much more than this president. The one who eliminated the monster killer that George Bush couldn’t find. The one who served as editor of the Harvard Review. The one who, his wife says will read every memo so that he knows the issues more than the people coming to brief him.

And these talking heads constantly want to act smarter than he is. When my husband turns the TV on and one of them is one there trying to tell me what I just listened to the president say, I walk away. I am sorry they don’t impress me.

What Boehner and every Republican will not be able to escape in the days (and years) ahead is the fact that our exceptional President reminded them – and the world – of the following:

““Would you rather reduce deficits and interest rates by raising revenue from those who are not now paying their fair share, or would you rather accept larger budget deficits, higher interest rates, and higher unemployment? And I think I know your answer.”

Those words were spoken by Ronald Reagan. But today, many Republicans in the House refuse to consider this kind of balanced approach – an approach that was pursued not only by President Reagan, but by the first President Bush …”

A ‘balanced approach’ is not a Democratic or Republican idea – it is how democracy works. In fact, it is the only way democracy can work, as Jefferson and other Founders knew.

I ask that Congressman if that 83 year old woman will get her S.S. check? I ask for a answer from him. I told him it is a dam shame that that woman is worrying just because that spineless Boehner and those radical Republicans want to hold this country hostage. I just keep asking him to tell me. What do I tell her Congressman? Or maybe you don’t give a dam. After all she is not rich.

Left a message for Mr Boehner.

I explained that I was empathetic for his situation. He has a intractable problem with a group of individuals who have no concept and no experience at democracy.

Urged him to consider that his legacy as a House Speaker depends on his choice in the next few hours. He can decide to place the interest of all Americans at the forefront of his actions and meet with Leader Pelosi and either agree to a ‘clean bill’ or to a ‘balanced approach’ and have a truly bipartisan group of Representatives pass it. Or, he can continue to enable a pack of irresponsible thugs to do enormous harm to every American.

Concluded with – it’s your choice Mr Boehner. Preserve the Union or continue to contribute to an intentional devastation of America.

We are having a march on our Congressman’s office here in Oklahoma City tomorrow. He is a tea party guy with absolutely no experience to govern. The only job he ever had was as manager of a Baptist campground here in the state. Somehow he won the Republican primary
and won the election. He is TOTALLY unqualified to be in the state legislature, let alone the national one. My husband and I will be participating in the march. Interesting to see if we get any press coverage.

    • 420 Bobfr
      July 25, 2011 at 10:40 pm

      Hi Gc,

From my perspective, the bottom line is that the President delivered a very simple lesson in civics – democracy style civics, that is.

      Engage, Americans, ENGAGE.

What happened on Election Day 2010 is an example of how quickly any democracy can be rendered impotent by a radicalized and heavily monitized effort to consolidate all power and wealth to a very few.

What the President reminded all Americans of tonight is that that radical endeavor is dangerously close to succeeding. And, it is not at all unprecedented that support for those most intent on crushing the majority of the population comes from an under-educated, slogan-shouting segment of society most certainly and ironically to suffer bitterly if President Obama and each of us fail in our duty to preserve the Republic.

As always, President Obama avoided demagoguery and threats and fear and spoke to what is noble and just. For all of us who understand and are committed to that arc of improving quality of life for every person the message is clear.

Don’t talk to the choir – confront the threat. Call, write, visit those who are threatening our Union and in a tone and words emulating those of President Obama deliver a crystal clear message that EVERY AMERICAN must step up and do their fair share of whatever it takes to rescue America from the abuse and avarice of the Bush legacy.

      Yes.We.Can. … DO.More.Together!

I must say with a heart full of pride that I truly witnessed a master at work tonight. President Obama embodies the old adage of ‘talk softly and carry a big stick’ His whole speech was that cool ‘no drama Obama’ style. Gone was the ire and frustration of the press conference friday night.

And when he softly suggested ‘call your congressmen’ it was like he placed a whispered clarion call to his ‘legion’ of followers and CRASH! goes the congress critters’ sites. There was no chest beating, no screeching (looking at your Big Ed), just a very softly spoken call to arms.

And in that moment the energy on twitter -in real time response- was electric. It was a thing of beauty. And a moment that will (for me) forever be a window into his calm assertive mastery of community organizing.

I am in awe. My advice is don’t watch the pundits. They either don’t get it, or are paid to ignore it. But in the real world. This man is a much admired master.

President Obama has a deep base of support who respect what he’s doing and see that he is literally the only adult in the room (h/t blackwaterdog). The media has been misled into thinking that a Mean Girls clique of so-called lefty bloggers represent the thoughts and feelings of that base of support. If there ever needs to be a reminder of reality, President Obama asking Americans to contact congress people in a speech and servers overwhelmed as a result should be a reminder that POTUS is not standing alone; he never was.

Demagogues like her have helped to create this crisis. Even here, she sneers about “gimmicks” in Reid’s plan, yet has to admit that when the rubber meets the road, his plan would preserve the country’s credit rating while Boehner’s joke of a plan would send this country into a severe crisis. If we had a responsible media which discussed the extremism of the current GOP prior to the November 2010 elections rather than demagoguing about supposed big-spending liberals who accomplished too little (which is untrue), we would not be here at this moment.

Coburn is the senator who in a town hall in 2009 told a lady in a wheel chair (who had a severe neurological disease) when she asked about the health care plan, that she should get neighbors to help her. That was his solution! The lady tried to get more answers and he ignored her. The way he treated her was inhumane and repulsive. He talks a good game on television, but when you know him and know what he is, you know he is disgusting. I keep writing and calling. When I called about Medicare and Social Security the girl started in about how “no one who is now receiving it will be hurt…” I cut her off and told her that I wanted the same for people coming after me. I do feel sorry for those girls these guys put to answer the phones!

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R) from Tennessee. She’s another version of Michele Bachmann. She never answers any question honestly and directly. She just keeps on repeating over and over again in her fingernails on a chalkboard voice “President Obama has spent more money than any other President.” “He keeps recklessley spending money.” Blah blah blah blah blah. But Lawrence and Rep. Rob Andrews a democrats didn’t let her get away with her lies.

yeah but the Dem could not get a word in and she talked her talking points over him almost the entire time. Instead of asking her questions I wish the Dem would have given our sides talking points to counter her.

It appears that compromise has become the bane of our existence, but the truth is the mere word is what has been blown out of proportion.

  163. July 25, 2011 at 11:19 pm

Lawry calling her to account by highlighting that she voted for a clean bill under Bush. Why can’t she do the same for PBO
Idiot: this government just keeps spending and spending

    • July 25, 2011 at 11:34 pm

She couldn’t answer him on that at all!!! Finally after trying a while got in an email to Boehner. Tried calling but his voicemail is full. Also got my congress people but they are good Dems anyway!

    • July 25, 2011 at 11:35 pm

Spending problem in the budgets she voted for in the past the wars she voted for, the tax cuts she voted for with out making the spending cuts. There isn’t a spending problem, there is a revenue problem.

You can talk to Boehner on his face book page. You have to “like it” (but you don’t have to mean it) in order to post a comment.
    http://www.facebook.com/OfficeofSpeakerBoehner?sk=wall

He’s getting praise from his supporters so please go tell him what most of the country are thinking. Search on “Office of the Speaker Boehner” to find the page.

Lord knows I’m not TPM’s David Kurtz’s biggest fan, but, yes, this:

Probably too much to ask that the cable nets bring on guests with expertise on the budget or on economics to provide insight and perspective on a budget and economics story.

    • July 25, 2011 at 11:58 pm

Lord, yes. My point, exactly today when I sent a note to Jeremy Gaines. Tonight when I saw Luke Russert standing there talking about this issue, I simply walked off.

What qualifies him to discuss this issue, except the fact that he is Tom Russert’s son is beyond me.

Tim Ass-over-teakettle-Pawlenty will be in Lawry’s rewrite since he’s been spending time telling lies about PBO in terms of the debt ceiling: saying PBO doesn’t have a plan, blah, blah, blah. Can’t wait for Lawry to steam roll his punk ass

  168. 499 hopefruit2
    July 25, 2011 at 11:48 pm

This is a CNN poll taken July 18-22 about the debt ceiling. Just a few main points:

64% want a “balanced approach” that includes revenues and spending cuts vs 34% who want spending cuts only.

52% believe that PBO has acted responsibly vs 33% for Repubs

62% favor the debt ceiling raised

51% believe that there will be major problems or a crisis if the debt ceiling is not raised.

And that was even BEFORE the President’s speech – no wonder congress was overrun this evening after the President’s speech.

There are many more details in this poll which indicate that our President’s approach resonates with the majority of the American people. Read on.

I sent that to Kyl….emailed him and told him to raise the debt ceiling……and I told him that I heard that he said that he hadn’t seen any polls that agreed with PBO approach to the debt….TA DA! SO, now he has!

  169. July 25, 2011 at 11:50 pm

T-Paw called PBO a chicken. Saying he should stop hiding in a basement and come to the microphone and tell “us” his plan. —-Is this mofo for real? 🙄 He is so fucking dumb!!!!

    • July 25, 2011 at 11:52 pm

We’ve moved on and he should too.

  170. July 25, 2011 at 11:55 pm

Dems need to control the messaging for seven more days. President Obama can only do so much himself. Reid filing cloture on his budget tomorrow will be big – either it gets blocked by the GOP and is big news hopefully, or it heads to a vote where you have to believe Reid has the votes.

Tomorrow through next Monday then need to have a schedule plotted to keep the pressure up and the frame strong.

      You said it.

And not to mention, PBO asked Americans to get involved in the discussion by calling Congress, meanwhile Boner takes to attacking him. And before that running his plan by his boss, Rush before even presenting it to his caucus.

Then he cries Uncle. He did not sign up to go mano-mano with the Prez of the U.S.

      Totally out of their league.

How can Odonnell who has been so supportive of our Pres have that hateful hack on and spend the time trashing Pres Obama?. Im not watching him again,

    • July 26, 2011 at 12:52 am

I’m not excusing it, but he’s probably trying to show his viewers the type of crazies that are making our laws. It’s one thing to talk about the crazy animals at the zoo, but to actually show the viewers what one looks like and sounds like….. it definitely gets the message across. It shows us just how looney they are and hopefully scares us so badly, we run to the phones and tell our gov officials to do the right thing
