‘we the people are with you, mr president’

Dear Mr President,

As you well know, President Lincoln had these words for the US Congress in 1865:

The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace and conspire against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, and more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies, all who question its methods or throw light upon its crimes…. corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high
places will follow, and the money powers of the country will endeavor to prolong it’s reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.”

What irony that the Republic’s first black President is the person called upon to defend everything that our Founder’s crafted and that 235 years of patriots have strived to achieve.

What irony that the Republic’s first black President now confronts the ‘party of Lincoln’ as it unabashedly strives to do what Jefferson Davis and his treasonous bandits failed to accomplish during their attempt to not just preserve enslavement but render the Republic a defunct democracy and, thereby, comprehensively deny the inalienable rights of each person irrespective of the color of their skin, their personal faith, their economic status.

Yes, President Obama, it comes to this moment that a non-white American citizen, a multi-cultural, empathetic, brilliant human being, a community organizer and eloquent statesman, a scholar and an internationally recognized champion of all that is the essence of the human spirit – it comes to you to lead America from the brink of the most concerted, vastly funded onslaught of all that our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution represent.

You have millions of your fellow citizens standing with you. No poll. No analysis. No pundit. No one can obscure for you the fact that WE THE PEOPLE are with you, Mr. President.

If we now face the 21st Century equivalent of January 1861, if we now face the 21st Century equivalent of April 12, 1861, Mr President, millions of Americans stand with you to preserve the Republic from the totally obvious threat by the very, very few ultra-wealthy, and ironically yet again, the under-educated, fear-driven, pitiful bigoted few whom enabled the destruction of the ‘party of Lincoln’ and replaced it with a pack of treasonous barbarians too inept to realize that in serving their ultra-wealthy, skillfully manipulative masters they are witless slaves – at least the slaves Lincoln and the Republic were trying to free knew they were slave. Oh, the irony.

Oh, Bob what a letter. I stopped and just silently prayed that the President will get your letter personally. I am really hoping for him to see that beautifully written letter wrapped in the history that he probably alread knows, but the greater point is that he knows that people like you and this family are thinkers and we realize what he is going through . Brilliant, Bob. You , Chip, Tally, and BWD need a program. Oh, I am so grateful to all of you for yur brilliance, compassion, truth, and this wonderful haven, Chips. Love you all back,HZ

Your letter is a GOOD reason why Americans should study/know their own history. I have always believed that the reason so many Americans are so easily misled by unscrupulous politicians has a lot to do with them not knowing the history of our nation. This makes them easy prey for these politicians to convince them that something as simple as a president having a WH official with the title “czar” is a threat to their freedom. Had they known that President Reagan had officials in his WH with the same title, they would have realized that the republicans were making a big deal out of a non-issue.

  6. July 24, 2011 at 8:36 am

Bob, you said it all. What a masterful piece. Thank you!!

And these are the people the president has to deal with. The crazies in the house:

“A Republican leadership aide has taken to calling them the “Default Caucus”: a universe of Republicans who
would sooner see the federal government default than reach a compromise
with President Obama. In the House, they may well have enough clout to block a deal.”

    *******MORE — A LOST SPEAKER****
“You have a lot of members who don’t like the idea of a compromise,” CBS News’s Nancy Cordes pointed out to Boehner at his weekly news conference, “or who don’t even want to raise the debt ceiling. Have you told them that any deal is going to have to involve some compromise?”

    “I have,” the speaker said.

    “How?” Cordes asked.

Boehner ignored her and solicited a different question.

Fox News’s Chad Pergram asked the speaker if he has a “sense that some of your members are locked in and that they cannot compromise?”

“I do not believe that would be anywhere close to the majority,” Boehner replied.

No? A Pew Research Center poll last week found that 53 percent of Republicans, and 65 percent of Tea Party faithful, believe that the Aug. 2 default deadline can be ignored without major problems. ‘

Boehner and Cantor held a meeting with the teapublicans recently. Rep. Ryan explained to them why the debt ceiling must be raised. It didn’t seem to do a bit of good since the teapublicans have been very vocal since then about not voting in favor of raising the debt ceiling. Boehner is trying to put a favorable spin on the predicament he is in, but he knows he’ll have problems getting the teapublicans’ votes and will have to reach a compromise with dems in the House and with PBO.

I hope one of the issues he drives home is the no-tax pledge by Republicans to Grover Norquist. This is just insane and therefore I’d like to see Democrats talking about it all day long.

Yuk. Andrea Mitchell, I read is going to be on the roundtable. She who this week insinuated that the president had a secret cigarette with Rusty.

She was clearly pulling that out of her tumba.

Bob, my husband and I will make sure we get this letter out to all of our friends. This is powerful! And, so correct.
I don’t know if any of you remember the Lincoln display in Disneyland in the 1960s, but it too was powerful. We sat in a theater listening to the audioanimatronic Lincoln gave an address. In it he said that if ever the United States was destroyed, it would not be from outside, it would be from the inside. That address has haunted me for 40 years.
Nicholas Kristof also has a powerful editorial in today’s New York Times about this. I truly hope people are waking up!

Beautiful letter, but it’s only in words! Where’s the action behind those words? You would think that people would be hitting the streets in Washington by force right now, and demand action from the Republican party, but there’s not one single soul. Where’s are co called left? Cricket………. It feels as if we have left this President to fight all by himself, without any mob in waiting, just like when the Republicans got out their mobs against President Obama, during the health care reform. Now, look at our side, NOTHING, NADA, ZERO, ZIPPO !

Blue you;re Spot ON…..People should really be demonstrating, marching, I have to give it to the partiers, they made noise day in and day out, they may be ignorant and not be able to write letters, but they made sure they were heard loud and clear, they were behind their candidate till they were elected, the reason we are here fighting this BS, is for what they created in the 2010. This President needs our full support, during the health care debate, phones were ringing ff the hook, letters in the millions were delivered and so on.
We the People need to be out in street, to let this President we have his back.

Thank you Blue for sharing my thoughts.

Good morning to all the true belivers of the President, Bob your letter is beautiful and I hope the doubters take it in. Chipsticks, thank you for doing what you do to stay involve eventhough we know you should be getting rest. Maybe when you truly get back you can write a piece to the doubters who even post here which is crazy to me because their confusion is so mis-directed…

Wow guys Fareed Zakaria is brilliant this morning. His opening statement on why ideological purity has ruined congress was spot on. He talked about how past leaders in different branches of congress and powerful activists like the Norquists of this world preached the kind of purity that is prevalent in the British Parliamentary system. But the difference is, in Britain, when one party wins, they are the majority in executive, legislative and sometimes judicial decisions. They push full steam ahead and enact their agenda without opposition, because the minority party has no control. Adopting this kind of strategy was bad for American politics because over here we have shared power between the legislative, judicial and executive. It is a checks and balance system. He cited an example; when Congressman Darrell Issa (R) from California became chairman of the ethics committee, he said he was going to expose the corruption that is President Obama’s policies. Well apparently, he wasn’t fast enough for Rush Limbaugh and Limbaugh blasted him. So what did Issa do? He came on Limbaugh’s show and apologized. Fareed pointed out how egregious it is that talk radio hosts and signing of oaths and pledges have congress by the balls. He said Americans need to wake up and realize that so called activism like the teaparty and others is dangerous for this country.

Hey guys Tim Geithner was great on TW with Christiane Amanpour even if that witch was interrupting him every 2 seconds. (she’s been a real disappointment since she left CNN, she basically carries water for the GOP) He said that when Boehner told the press in his briefing on friday that he, Eric Cantor, and Geithner had shaken hands and agreed on $800 billion tax revenue agreement that Boehner lied. He said that President Obama never signed off on that deal. President Obama flat out told Boehner that he would NEVER accept only $800 billion in tax revenue, when there was $1 trillion in tax cuts on the table. President Obama said that those tax cuts were too deep, would derail the economy and destroy beneficial social programs and he wanted $1.2 trillion in tax revenue and when Boehner couldn’t sell that to his teabagger caucus, Boehner walked out of the talks.

Her panel today is annoying: Arianna Huffington, George Will, Some anchor from the FOX Business Network and former Clinton OMB Alice Bartlett? I think. Today, Boehner said that he, Pelosi, Reid, and McConnell will try to have a deal by 4pm EDT because the Asian markets will open up later today and he doesn’t want them in a tizzy due to a lack of a solid deal. George Will took that statement and said that Geithner made the statement, isn’t serious about default, that there will never be a default, because Geithner has been pushing the deadline date and that Geithner is a liar. George Will basically lied and Amanpour let him get away with it and let him spin his BS. They all just piled up on Geithner after he left. It was disgusting. These idiots don’t seem to realize that Geithner isn’t joking about default. If the debt ceiling isn’t raised, there will be no sufficient payments for SS, Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Benefits, Defense. Student loans interest rates, car notes, credit card interest payments, mortgage payments will jack up. We’ll be hemorrhaging badly, because interest rates will skyrocket just so we can make payments on the interest of the loan we borrowed.

Christiane Amanpour wil not have a job, If she didn’t carry the Republican water. At first she tryed to be fair but she quitely found out, fair not how the game work. The Republican are the children of big Corporation. the News Media is one of the father to the Republican

WH Chief of Staff Bill Daley was fantastic on Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer. Bob tried to sell the meme that President Obama is the intransigent one and Daley hit back HARD. He told Bob that PBO has been meeting with these leader for more than 3 weeks. That Boehner has no control of his caucus and PBO tried to help him out and work with him, but Boehner has no courage and guts to stand up to his party. He said PBO does not want and will not accept a short term extension of the debt ceiling. That the house GOP are the ones at fault, they signed an anti-tax pledge and boxed themselves in a corner, now they’re looking to bail out on their responsibility, take the President down with them, and take America down with them but the President will never let that happen.

Then Sen. John Kyl (R) came on and Bob let him spin BS again. I used to like Bob a lot, but these past few weeks have been disappointing (still keeping my hopes up that he gets his senses back) Kyl tried to blame dems for not passing Cut, Cap and Balance in the senate and Bob let him get away with that. Bob didn’t point out that the CCB was the Ryan Kill Medicare Bill on steroids. He didn’t point out that it would draconially slash 20% off SS, Medicare and Medicaid by 2021, it has no tax revenue and gives the rich aka “job creators” more tax cuts and tax breaks. That’s why it didn’t pass. It wasn’t some white knight bill. Then Kyl praised Boehner for saying that they needed a deal by 4pm EDT today so Asian stock markets don’t freak out. Ooooooooh he’s such a brave and courageous leader. Sen. Dick Durbin (D) from Illinois was fantastic. He blasted Kyl for his lies. He pointed out how messed up CCB was, that Eric Cantor walked out of talks with VP Biden and Boehner walked out of talks twice with PBO. So who the heck is the unserious one in these talks? He said PBO has laid out his plans on the table and Boehner has been punting, lacks courage and is too afraid to stand up to his caucus. He said that PBO has been the adult in the room time after time. Dem leaders were willing to compromise but repubs are so stuck on ideology that they’d rather take this country to the brink of destruction than compromise. He said that he was talking to a business tycoon who had talked to Boehner the day before and Boehner said that this default business is no cause for concern, that Geithner and PBO are just scaring America and the government has a shitload of money. Really? Durbin called him out for the liar he is and told the businessman that Boehner is an unserious “leader” and no one should take him seriously when he peddles such lies. Durbin was on fire this morning. The fightback was sweeeeeeeeet!!!!!!!

I saw Bill Daley on Meet the Press and he said that the President and Boehner did not have an agreement at 800 billion in revenues. He said the President wanted it to be about 1.2 trillion in revenues. So it is no shock that Boehner lied about the President moving the goal post. What else would you expect a liar to do?

EDP4BHO, that is fine. You are doing good constructed things. That is a purpose that is worthwhile. Your health is most important. Take care of that first so that you will be able to be here to enjoy the fruits of all of our labor. Trust me. So many of you are watching, praying, and meditationg in beautiful ways for me because I will be going in for a procedure on the 2nd. But I do what I know I can do. Call, flood the phone lines, e mail, write encouraging letters to the President and his Senior Advisors and Vice President Biden, my Senator Boxer who supports the President and works her self to the bone. And then I pray for strength , and I call the opposition and give them a piece of my mind. Really. So reenforce your strength physically, mentally, and spiritual and then go get them. But replenish yourself first because if we are going to be able to fight for President Obama, you must be ready. We are NOT a weak army here, contrary to what some have said. People do have families to attend to, and some of us need to get some rest and then come back to the line and engage. We are not weak but we are not foolish in how we put out our energy in this fight. These fools are out to take this President down, no matter what and it just WILL NOT HAPPEN ON OUR WATCH. I love you all back,HZ

Christian Amanpour was one of the journalistic perpetrators of the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld led Iraq invasion in 2003. She and CNN were reporting from the battle field. People like Amanpour, Kyl, Cantor, Boehner, the Koch Bros, many of the members of Congress, and many other well-to-do Americans don’t care if our nation defaults on its debt, and they don’t care if our fiscal problems aren’t solved. They have theirs, and that is all that is important to them. The fact that Cantor has bet against the U.S. government proves it, and I suspect that the majority of the azzzes appearing on national news programs have made moves similar to his to protect their assets in case a default happens.

Yes, desertflower, UT has given us several excellent summaries of the morning “news” shows. Sounds like the dems have finally gotten a message game going on. At least I hope so. I also like Bobfr’s letter to President Obama. I hope the White House staffers who review letters will pass this on to the President. I think he needs to constantly be reassured that We The People are behind him every step of the way.

At this point, where we go from here in terms of the nation’s budget crisis will depend on what happens this evening. I’m eagerly awaiting how things pan out. I’m hopeful and prayerful that things will work out for the best. Our President has taken courageous step to put this country on the right path. He seems to have the backing of the top Dem leaders Pelosi and Reid on this budget issue. I’m hopeful that Boehner and the other Repugnants will get their act together–if only to save their on own a**ess, I mean faces.

I just watched Cenk on Reliable sources and he is now quoting Al sharpton’s 60 minutes interview where Rev Al stated that he will NOT criticize PBO under any circumstance and Cenk has concluded that because he was the number one Critic of PBO he is out and the guy who will never criticize PBO is in. That tool is an idiot.

Cenk is a sore loser and I bet he will align himself with jane the hamster and start his own PAC soon.. A big old bratty man crying about losing its so pathetic.

Since Cenk is a Republican, then let him go to that lying so call news over there at FOX, he will fit right in. He can take that Wacko Glen Beck place.

So why doesn’t Cenk explain the other 23 hours on MSNBC where Obama gets criticized all the time?

IMO, not only is he an idiot, M4obama,

He is also a coward, a liar, and a whiny-azzz kid in an adult body, who refuses to face the simple fact that his program sucked. If in his role at MSNBC he had been “all that and a bag of chips,” his ratings would have reflected it. They didn’t. In his first appearance as a host on MSNBC, Rev. Al presented more drama-free facts and information than Cenk presented in his entire time at the network. Every one of Cenk’s programs reflected his preference for bluster and poutrage over facts. Viewers tuned out, and Cenk had to go. He could have kept the lame lie that his criticism of PBO played a role in MSNBC execs giving him his walking papers. He must think we’re as delusional as he is. PBO has always expressed a desire to listen to the opinions of others and has never sought to “punish” anyone who disagrees with him. Anyone who has listened to the things PBO has said, watched him interact with others, and/or read his books, would know that Cenk is lying through his teeth.

    Good Morning all
I wanted to share with you a great idea that I got from my cousin in Virginia. She, along with several of her neighbors are not too happy with all this debt debate with the republicans. She said, as a way to show support (on top of making donations), they decided to put the Obama 2008 signs in their front yards. I have been passing on this idea to friends and other family members and they have said they would do the same thing. If you have a sign left, can you please display it as a sign of support to President Obama
    Thanks!! Enjoy your Sunday 

Ezra Klein is shortsighted in his analysis of the current debt situation. He is trying to lump the President and the Dems in Congress with fault in making the markets unstable. He should clearly indentify who is REALLY at fault. Never before has a debt ceiling vote been post poned or abandoned until the TREASONOUS Teaparty PACT in the House took over the rest of the GOP party. This is where the responsibility lies. To insinuate that the president is also to blame for this calamity is totally BOGUS and IRRESPONSIBLE. I guess Ezra has the BIG BOY MONEY MACHINE’s foot on his neck. SHAME ON HIM!! Obama/Biden 2012!!

        July 24, 2011 at 5:46 pm

The things you point out in your comment, Keith, are the reasons I stopped taking anything Ezra Klein has to say as coming from the position of one who provides un-biased reporting. His tendency to want to “spread” the blame around even when it is not the case, and his repeated failure to tell the truth about the GOP caused me to avoid reading anything he writes or listening to anything he has to say in his TV appearances. I don’t question his intellect, but I do question his ethics. I will not allow Ezra Klein or anyone else I deem to be dishonest and/or timid about standing up for what is right, to continue to jerk my chain. He, and the others that fit into this category, need to grow up and stop pretending that they are a part of PBO’s cabinet/WH staff and are privy to inside information when they most certainly are NOT.

    July 24, 2011 at 1:26 pm

So today is the day of the “Boehner Deadline”, three hours in fact. But according to Benen, his demands are now worse. TWO sequences of debt ceiling extensions; in exchange for the first sequence 1 trillion in cuts/no revenue. Good grief!!

I must say, I felt uneasy. PBO was so strong on Friday, that ironically he boxed himself into the correct corner, but is rhetorically boxed in; he can’t let Boehner the hostage taker try and knock him of the moral high ground pedestal he so eloquently ascended on Friday.

I say I felt uneasy until now. I googled WH Communications Dan Pfeiffer’s twitter.

FANTASTIC news so far. Following Dan in real time is like being in the room with PBO and Carney. Follow along, the news is good for our side. No backing down as of now.

      July 24, 2011 at 3:49 pm

DTTM, remember President Obama was strong on Friday because he needed to be and had to be to continue to show that he is a leader who leads. Also, President Obama does not box himself in when he constantly knows that the middle class Americans are suffering each minute of each day. Boehner has no will or guts to fight with a President Barack Obama, otherwise this would have been over long time ago. Just look at Boehner’s behavior. Secondly, President has NO intentitons of allowing Boehner nor any of his minions knock him off the “Moral high ground pedestal he so eloquently ascended to on Friday.” President Obama is not interested in any type of “Pedestal”, he is the President of the United States doing his job. I am happy that you are following Dan Pfeiffer. That is the best move. Dan knows the facts of what is taking place. When Esra is sitting in the room with the President in these talks, then I will listen to him. These guys write articles to sell papers and for people to continue to visit their crap of a blog. We are supporting our President as Bob so beautifully stated. And we are telling the oppositions off as Tally so beautifully stated. Democratie, Progressives, or whatever. I love you back DTT<.

President Obama has spent all of his time in office trying to repair the wreckage created by the Bush administration. He wants to stop kicking the can down the road on important initiatives like energy, education, healthcare and entitlements. He ran for office to improves the lives of the American people – even those who did not vote for him. He ran for office because he wanted to get things done. He wanted to do big things. He wants to build a strong foundation so we can win the future. The global competition is fierce and we are lagging behind.

What terrifies the Republican Party is that President Obama is showing the American people what ‘GOVERNING’ looks like. He is showing that smart and efficient government can be a positive factor in their lives. Not to do everything, but to do the things that ordinary Americans can’t do by themselves and to work for the common good. He said during the campaign that he wanted to make government cool again. Just look at the long list of accomplishments in just under three years.

The Republican Party on the other hand wants to take down the government. They don’t think government should do anything for the people. The very fact that President Obama is making government cool again is freaking them out. Hence, the full court press to disenfranchise voters and dismantle unions, Our democracy is under assault from within. The only way to stop the sabotage of the Republican Party is at the ballot box. But first, we will have to be relentless in preventing them from rigging the system.

    • July 24, 2011 at 2:20 pm

Hi Michele, thank you for this YouTube on David McCullough. He in my opinion is a great historian and a great author. I have enjoyed some of his great works, including the book in the background about President Truman. I picked that book out to read because I try very hard to find out what President Obama is reading, and this was one that he was reading, so I rushed and read it and love that it is in my library with notes of why and when I read it during this Presidency. I appreciate Mr. McCullough’s remarks about the President, and I really do believe that Mr. McCullough is very sincere in his remakrs. So thank you so much. If you love reading about history and President, Mr. David McCullough is one of the best. I know why I love him so much is because of his love for music. Great Historian. I hope he is able to write a great book (s) about President Obama for all of us to read in the future. I will probably be gone, but I just would love to read one of his after President Obam’s second term is completed. Let’s hope for great things to come. Thank you so much for this.

Good afternoon TODers. As I was reading the info about Grover Norquist it brought to mind a show that used to be on A&E or FX i can’t remember which. Jesse Ventura was the host and it was called Conspiracy Theory. There was an episode with a woman who left the country for a location she would not allow to be mentioned. She was saying that she worked fro the gov’t during Bush 43. She said she had a discussion with a senior female cabinet member who stated that it was time for the “culling” to begin. Basically she was saying that the monied people in America were making plans to get rid of a lot of the “bottom feeders” or everyday working people and keep the rest to work for them and make them richer. I watched most of the episodes and could agree with some of what was said but, I admit I was like “whatever lady”. All of this mess that is going on has brought what this lady said back to mind. I really never thought I would see this in my life time(36), but I see that there is a big battle ahead. I don’t understand people who are this evil, nor do I want to. I just pray everything they are doing comes out. Also this Rupert Murdoch thing and the pledge these stupid ass repugs have taken I am pretty sure is all connected in some way. Besides the republican thing. As you know the way dictators control things in their countires is through false reporting in the media, and we all know how many news papers and television stations Murdoch owned and was trying to buy up. All I can think to myself is wow this shit is really happening!! Sorry about the second post I posted under the wrong article.

Exactly desertflower, especially 6-11. What is funny to me is the people calling President Obama Hitler. He definantly did all those things. Also the theory of the big lie, He knew that his target audiance would not believe a small lie but a big one and he was the only one who knew how to fix it all. I do believe some people are waking up to what is going on. My mama has friend she argues with all the time about President Obama. She believes the baby killer anti-christ crap. She is on disability and is now speaking against these crazy repugs. I do have to say she has not given the President any credit but I think she is coming around to him not being the evil one.
