He is an amazing man. My sister emailed me last night. She had caught an old video of the Obama’s on Oprah. “They are so in love, they are so gorgeous, he is so respectful of her….” We are like 99% in awe, 1 % wistful 🙂

President Obama didn’t endorse the gang of six plan itself because he hasn’t seen the details. What he wanted to make clear was that the plan mirrored the structure that he had been advocating all along. It’s the balanced approach that he was endorsing. At this point the only group not on board with the balanced approach is the House GOP. Their intransigence just got magnified big time.

Obama tries to box in House GOP

President Obama stopped by the White House briefing room, offering an update on the status of the debt-ceiling process. I’ve seen some reports suggesting the president endorsed the Gang of Six’s compromise, but that’s not quite what he said, and it seems to miss the point of Obama’s comments.

In general, the president stuck to generalities, saying he’s seem “some progress” of late, and dismissing the “Cut, Cap, and Balance” charade out of hand.

Specifically on the Gang of Six, however, Obama said their apparent agreement is “broadly consistent” with the approach he’s pushed, and praised it for touching all the bases — it cuts spending while increasing revenues, as part of a larger, significant debt-reduction package. He added that he’d still need more details before evaluating it fully, but added, “I think that we’re on the same playing field. “

This, however, is what struck me as key:

“So here’s where we stand. We have a Democratic President and administration that is prepared to sign a tough package that includes both spending cuts, modifications to Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare that would strengthen those systems and allow them to move forward, and would include a revenue component. We now have a bipartisan group of senators who agree with that balanced approach. And we’ve got the American people who agree with that balanced approach.”

Thanks for this info Ladyhawke. President Obama and the democrats have come to the table with multiple plans, willing to compromise on sacred cows such as SS and Medicare and the American people in poll after poll are recognizing who is the adult in this debate. The intrasigence on the GOP side with 14 days to go is unbelieveable. Children don’t act like this. At a point, children realize when they’re in the wrong and are willing to compromise to move on. Crying out loud does everything always have to be a battle? Raising the debt ceiling has always been a procedural vote with none of this posturing, intrasigence, stubborness and downright meaness that is playing out in front of the camera all because their top priority is to kowtow to the teabagger wing of the party and make President Obama a one term President. I hope the democrats keep this issue at the forefront of the public’s mind come 2012 because we all know how short the American peoples attention span is and how they suffer from political amnesia.

Jon Stewart obviously has some serious skeletons in his closet and his skewed and distorted version of President Obama, most democrats (except the Jewish ones & the White New Yorkers amongst them) and black politicians as a whole exposes this little, spiteful narcissistic man for the weasel he is!!!

I also suspect that he and Rachel Maddow have teamed up in their campaign against President Obama.
but in the end, it is Jon Stewart and Rachel Maddow who will disappear into obscurity and relegated to cautionary footnote status if that!!!

OT: I just received this in an email:

House Government Reform and Oversight Committee Chairman Darrel Issa has led one partisan witch hunt after another since his party became the majority and he became committee chair. But his latest grasping-at-straws attempt to shame Democrats has blown up in his face.

Rep. Issa accused Democratic appointees on the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission – the independent commission established in 2009 to investigate the causes of the financial crisis – of financial mismanagement, disclosing confidential information, conflicts of interest and unethically pursuing a partisan agenda. But the documents produced in this investigation not only failed to substantiate these claims, they actually demonstrated improprieties by some of the Republicans on the Commission.

Now, Chairman Issa wants to brush it all under the rug and look the other way. We can’t let him!

Join PFAW’s petition to the Government Reform and Oversight Committee now demanding that they investigate improprieties by Republican members of the FCIC.

Heck if you send death threats or threats of anykind to a federal official you are arrested immediately. But when it comes to the President, we’re divided? And he possessed the same weapon that was contained in his threatening rants. If everyone went around threatening federal officials and getting off on so called loopholes, how do you separate the frustrated from the truly disturbed? There was no precedent for that bozo getting off based on free speech. That’s just ridiculous.

What the fuck!!!!! Unbelievable! I thought that threatening the life of a publicly elected official was a criminal offence. They may just be words written on a blog but there are people who are crazy enough to act upon those words even if it is not the author of the threat. By inciting violence against the President then surely they would be culpable should the unthinkable have happened. I’m afraid that the Judges’ summing up for the majority is the biggest load of bullshit that I have ever read.

In my eyes a threat is a threat and there are enough batshit crazy people out there that could have acted upon this miscreant’s words. Thank God that no one did and I pray daily for the safety of your amazing President and his family.

Bachmann Aides Shove ABC’s Brian Ross

Michele Bachmann’s relationship with the press has always been tense at best, but it spilled over into open conflict on Tuesday as aides to the Congresswoman allegedly shoved ABC reporter Brian Ross.

Ross was chasing after Bachmann after an event to ask about a Daily Caller story on her migraine condition. According to TIME’s Swampland blog, things went downhill from there:

“That’s when things got interesting. Ross dashed after Bachmann, repeatedly asking whether she had ever missed a House vote due to a migraine. She ignored him. Ross pursued her into a parking area behind the stage. Her aides grew alarmed. When Ross made a beeline for the white SUV waiting to carry Bachmann away, two Bachmann men pounced on him, grabbing and pushing him multiple times with what looked to me like unusual force. In fact, I have never seen a reporter treated so roughly at a campaign event, especially not a presidential one. Ross was finally able to break away and lob his question at Bachmann one more time, but she ignored him again.

Afterward, I asked Ross-a hard-nosed pro who nevertheless seemed slightly shaken-whether he’d ever been treated so roughly. “A few times,” he told me. “Mostly by mafia people.”

TPM reached out to Bachmann’s camp for comment and will post their response.

Update: ABC Vice President Jeffry Schneider condemned Bachmann’s behavior in an interview with the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent. He added that ABC has footage of the incident and will likely post it on their website soon.

“He was certainly shoved around and pushed,” Schneider said. “It’s unfortunate when physicality is involved. He was just doing his job.”

If anyone caught my teabagger rep., Joe Walsh, on the opening segment of Hardball, you saw Exhibit A on the type of person you get when you don’t show up to vote. He may be the most obnoxious, lamebrained, unqualified, bad word, bad word to ever serve in Congress, and there’s some fierce competition. Sane people did not bother to show up to vote for sane Melissa Bean, who was never good enough for the PL types, but who was normal and decent and showed up to vote with Obama and the Dems on key votes. The hate-filled baggers did show up to vote and edged out Bean and we have this embarrassing disaster of a person representing our district, who is part of that nutty, uninformed, belligerant Repub freshman class in the House who is cluelessly causing all the needless obstruction now in Congress. He is a real piece of work and does not belong in our government. Disgusting.

    • July 19, 2011 at 6:06 pm

I know all about this fool that you are talking about. He has call President Obama a liar. This is the B.S. that this President has to deal with, these crazy fools like Joe Walsh, these crazy tea parties. Where if everyone had gotten out and voted we would had alot less of them to deal with. And maybe it would be Speaker Pelosi, instead of that orange cry baby we have now. I hope people like Ed, Rachel, and all those Progressive Liberals are satisfied with helping to ruin this country.

      • July 19, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Did anyone see Rev. Al and another one of those Tea Party nuts. These people are not qualified to be serving in Congress. And the guy who work for President Clinton said that under GW Bush only eight millions jobs were created. In eight years, but in a terrible crisis, having to deal with crazy bunch of Republicans, people expect this President to have jobs following like river of water in two and a half years.

      • July 19, 2011 at 7:26 pm

Hey Walsh is also a deadbeat who didn’t pay his mortgage. Yep, his district sent a guy to congress whose home was foreclosed on and he’s making decisions about the countries budget and financial future. He also barely won in 2010 — by little more than 500 votes. This is what the American people get. Those who voted for this fool and those who stayed home.

          July 19, 2011 at 8:22 pm

He has a huge messy past, the foreclosures are only a small part of it. Our local Repub newspaper didn’t bother to report much of these truths. Many of us tried with letters to the editor and in comments online. But this was at the heart of the teabagger frenzy. They didn’t care about the quality of their teabagger, they were voting for him anyway. Walsh’s teabagger supporters were rabid, were obnoxious and disruptive to a League of Womens Voters lady who tried to conduct a debate and threatened her and her family afterward. They also threatened Bean and her family. These people are nuts. Really nuts. And we have one of them representing us in Congress.

Please someone help me understand the free trade deal, I support Obama but scare of the deal in-pack on working class people. The reason, the city where I was born, Alabama had about 10 factories Now we have one small plants, the town look abandon, crime and drug have taking over, the people have no hope for a better life, the high tech factories are 2-3 hours away, they don’t hire that many blacks. It hurt to see once a nice community go down the tube, because the job went to china. Fruit of the loom, (300 jobs)were one of our main plants , they move oversea but sells the product in walmart, target ect. This happen in city to city where I grow up. It hurt to visit, they was once proud people now they don’t have no jobs just Gov. hand out. In which the Gov. is now cutting out.

We are in a race with China to over take green technology manufacturing….these trade deals would help to ensure that we remain competitive in the manufacturing of these products.

Short and simple when these countries buy batteries, solar panels, wind turbines and other green products we hope that these trade agreements will open the door for more opportunities to export these products.

    • July 19, 2011 at 8:16 pm

Hey dun, good to know there’s another Alabamian onboard theobamadiary.com Express. Woot! Woot! 🙂 I don’t know too much about the President’s policies regarding trade other than to say I agree with what other posters have said. I do know that President Obama wants to bring manufacturing jobs back home to the U.S.A. He wants to heavily tax those companies that ship jobs overseas and give incentives to U.S. businesses that create jobs here. Lord knows, we need more jobs here in the state of Alabama especially in small towns like where I live.

The president and democrats in the Senate want an amendment to these trade deals that will provide funds to retrain workers who may lose their jobs as a result of their approval by the Senate. After screaming at PBO and the WH to send them to Congress for months, the republicans walked out on the debates because they wanted no part in helping Americans who may be impacted by the treaties if this amendment passes in the Senate. Hearing this made me very angry at the republicans who are always trying to portray themselves as patriots. Please pass this information about republican obstruction on these trade deals to everyone you know, dun. I seem to recall reading the information I shared with you on The Hill web site, and the link gobrooklyn provided to TPV is an excellent resource for debunking the lies that are being told about these treaties. PBO isn’t the problem. He’s still focused on helping American workers. It is, as usual, the republicans who are against anything/everything PBO and the democrats propose, even if it will help the nation and its people on the path to economic recovery.

She may be “friends” with Garcelle Beauvais, but I hope she is never inclined to believe that Garcelle ever really lets her guard down in her presence. Garcelle makes conversation with her, but Garcelle knows exactly who and what Harmon is. I can’t recall the number of times I’ve held seemingly cozy conversations with people who have racist leanings they never restrained themselves from showing in their words and actions, but I can also recall the number of times that I ever trusted them enough to shared any of my intimate thoughts and feelings. My best friend is Anne. my former colleague, who happens to have been born white, and who rejected the tendency to classify and stereotype others on the basis of their race, religion, national origin, sexual preference, etc, early in her life. This made her a sort of odd duck among the other white teachers on the faculty in the red state of GA, so she asked me why they didn’t invite her to their social gatherings. I told her that it was because she has nothing in common with them. After I added some specific details to this statement, she began to understand why she was a social outcast among them. That Anne approached me instead of them to inquire as to why she was being excluded from their social activities shows the level of trust and friendship we developed over our years on the job teaching in classrooms next to each other, so when Anne asked me to teach one more year until she would retire, I agreed without hesitating.

“without hesitating one second. Real friends support each other when one of them has to deal with a difficult situation. I would have never done this for any of the others who were rejecting her socially because her views of the world are different from theirs.

Michelle Obama to Appear on ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,’ Promote Outreach to Homeless Vets
    July 19, 2011 1:39 PM

ABC News’ Devin Dwyer (@devindwyer) reports: First Lady Michelle Obama will tape her first appearance on network reality TV this week as a guest star in ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

The White House says Mrs. Obama will travel on Thursday to Fayetteville, N.C., where she will roll up her sleeves and help expand a community resource center for homeless female veterans located just outside the gates of Ft. Bragg.

The first lady’s participation is framed as part of the “Joining Forces” initiative she began with Dr. Jill Biden to provide support and recognition to military veterans and their families.

George Verschoor, executive producer of “Extreme Makeover,” said Mrs. Obama will work specifically on a new greenhouse and a children’s playhouse at the center, the Steps-N-Stages Jubilee House.

She is also expected to participate in a special project to honor the center’s founder, Barbara Marshall, a 15-year Navy veteran, he said.

“When the first lady first saw this story, she was so moved by Barbara Marshall and the work she’s doing,” Verschoor said. “The first lady has said she not only wants to do something for the whole house… but she also wanted to do something personal for Barbara.”

Marshall, a former chaplain, has served hundreds of women veterans since opening the center a little over a year ago, Verschoor said, but her center is only able to provide living accommodations to five women at a time.

“Her problem is the house is so small,” he said. “So that’s what we’re doing this week: expanding the capacity of the house and to all of her resources so she can help even more.”

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates 107,000 veterans are homeless on any given night.

Mrs. Obama, no stranger to the television limelight, has previously appeared on PBS’s “Sesame Street,” Nickelodeon’s “iCarly,” Food Network’s “Iron Chef America,” and a mix of daytime TV talk shows and late-night comedy.

Her appearance on “Extreme Makeover,” which will air in October, follows a similar one by former First Lady Laura Bush, who was featured in a 2005 episode taped at a Biloxi, Miss., home damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

    The Road Not Taken-David Brooks

There was a Democratic president eager to move to the center. He floated certain ideas that would be normally unheard of from a Democrat. According to widespread reports, White House officials talked about raising the Medicare eligibility age, cutting Social Security by changing the inflation index, freezing domestic discretionary spending and offering to pre-empt the end of the Bush tax cuts in exchange for a broad tax-reform process…

But the Republican Party decided not to pursue this deal, or even seriously consider it…….So let us pause to identify the people who decided not to seize the chance to usher in the largest cut in the size of government in American history. They fall into a few categories:

The Beltway Bandits. American conservatism now has a rich network of Washington interest groups adept at arousing elderly donors and attracting rich lobbying contracts. For example, Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform has been instrumental in every recent G.O.P. setback. He was a Newt Gingrich strategist in the 1990s, a major Jack Abramoff companion in the 2000s and he enforced the no-compromise orthodoxy that binds the party today.

Norquist is the Zelig of Republican catastrophe. His method is always the same. He enforces rigid ultimatums that make governance, or even thinking, impossible.

The Big Government Blowhards. The talk-radio jocks are not in the business of promoting conservative governance. They are in the business of building an audience by stroking the pleasure centers of their listeners.

They mostly give pseudo Crispin’s Day speeches to battalions of the like-minded from the safety of the conservative ghetto. To keep audience share, they need to portray politics as a cataclysmic, Manichaean struggle. A series of compromises that steadily advance conservative aims would muddy their story lines and be death to their ratings.

The Show Horses. Republicans now have a group of political celebrities who are marvelously uninterested in actually producing results. Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann produce tweets, not laws. They have created a climate in which purity is prized over practicality.

The Permanent Campaigners. For many legislators, the purpose of being in Congress is not to pass laws. It’s to create clear contrasts you can take into the next election campaign. It’s not to take responsibility for the state of the country and make it better. It’s to pass responsibility onto the other party and force them to take as many difficult votes as possible.

It’s just astounding that 5 Democrats actually voted for the GOP Cap, Cut and Balance bill also know as DUCK, DODGE and DISMANTLE.

Last night Lawrence O’Donnell interviewed Robert Greenstein of the Center for Budget Policy Priorities to explained the implications of the GOP Balanced Budget Amendment. I would love for those 5 Democrats to watch that interview and read the post below and explain why they still think it was a good idea to vote for it.

Greenstein Statement on the “Cut, Cap, and Balance Act” That the House Will Consider on July 19

The “Cut, Cap, and Balance Act” that the House of Representatives will vote on next week stands out as one of the most ideologically extreme pieces of major budget legislation to come before Congress in years, if not decades. It would go a substantial way toward enshrining Grover Norquist’s version of America into law.

Saint Roscoe made such a good point today. He said the Republicans supported the tax cuts during the lame duck session in December. Then they supported the budget deal back in April. The tax deal and the budget deal both added to the debt. BUT NOW with all of that the GOP is against raiding the debt limit. Since it is the responsibility of congress to ensure our debts are paid, I think it is a violation of their oath of office to try and force a default. It’s irresponsible, Un-American and unpatriotic. I wish the media would point that out.

President Obama has stated many times the road would be ROUGH, HARD, and TREACHEROUS. He also said we would meet fierce resistance. Why is everyone on this board acting SURPRISED AND SHOCKED? We live in America where RACISM is practically a BIRTHRIGHT.

You know what Keith, this is why I have so much to learn about President Obama. Sometimes I do get angry, yes, bad days, good days. Sometimes I can’t take how cruel people are with him, how unfair, the lack of respect, how corrupt the media is.I feel very protective of him. But I know that deep down, it doesn’t accomplish anything and I should follow his example more, he always remains calm and gracious.

It reminds me of that part of A Singular Woman that we all read:

The group took a walk, with Barry running ahead. A flock of Indonesian children began lobbing rocks in his direction. They ducked behind a wall and shouted racial epithets. He seemed unfazed, dancing around as though playing dodge ball “with unseen players,” Bryant said. Ann did not react. Assuming she must not have understood the words, Bryant offered to intervene. “No, he’s O.K.,” Ann said. “He’s used to it.”

He is used to it and sometimes it makes me very sad that he is used to it.
