We are going to be hearing a lot about the Balanced Budget Amendment for the federal government this week. Since the Republican Party doesn’t know how to govern, they have to resort to gimmicks. But as President Obama said, we don’t need a BBA. Congress just needs to do their job. Here is his response to a question on the BBA at the press conference yesterday. Lots of good talking points for twitter and the media.

    —————————————————-

THE PRESIDENT: I think I already addressed this question earlier. We don’t need a constitutional amendment to do our jobs. The Constitution already tells us to do our jobs — and to make sure that the government is living within its means and making responsible choices.

And so, this notion that we’re going to go through a multiyear process instead of seizing the moment now and taking care of our problems is a typical Washington response. We don’t need more studies. We don’t need a balanced budget amendment. We simply need to make these tough choices and be willing to take on our bases. And everybody knows it. I mean, we could have a discussion right here about what the numbers look like and we know what’s necessary.

And here’s the good news — it turns out we don’t have to do anything radical to solve this problem. Contrary to what some folks say, we’re not Greece, we’re not Portugal. It turns out that our problem is we cut taxes without paying for them over the last decade; we ended up instituting new programs like a prescription drug program for seniors that was not paid for; we fought two wars, we didn’t pay for them; we had a bad recession that required a Recovery Act and stimulus spending and helping states — and all that accumulated and there’s interest on top of that.

And to unwind that, what’s required is that we roll back those tax cuts on the wealthiest individuals, that we clean up our tax code so we’re not giving out a bunch of tax breaks to companies that don’t need them and are not creating jobs, we cut programs that we don’t need, and we invest in those things that are going to help us grow.

And every commission that’s been out there has said the same thing and basically taken the same approach, within the margin of error.

Another reason why a BBA wouldn’t be feasible, is that Congress would have to draw it up, both chambers would have to agree on it and vote multiple times to reach a final bill. Then they would have to send it to all 50 states in the union, the legislatures in every state would take a look at it, if they don’t like anything in it, they’d vote for changes or tweaks in the amendment or they may vote NO outright. You’d need a majority of states to vote YES and then it becomes an amendment. It’s basically going a roundabout route using the Constitution and coming up with an amendment. A BBA can also not be achieved in time for the August 2nd deadline and is just another way for the republicans in congress to shirk their responsibilities. I’m glad PBO rejected the idea of a BBA. It’s a waste of precious time and frankly it’s insulting; because it just shows how much the republicans are willing to punt and kick the can down the road, instead of dealing with the problem once and for all.

      • July 16, 2011 at 12:28 pm

OMG! That is insane. Talk about pies in the sky. These idiots are just trying to stall for time, right? I had not really thought about the fact that it is a constitutional amendment. So engaged in the adam and jane stuff, I am kind of lost. I just sent out my last batch of emails to the media.

        • July 16, 2011 at 1:15 pm

Tell me about it. We still can’t get the ERA passed after 50 years. Bunch of children in congress.

I expect we will see the Republican Party ‘leadership’ blanket the airwaves tomorrow touting the merits of the Balanced Budget Amendment for the federal government. It is really tragic that the members of congress who have the responsibility for budgetary “oversight” don’t understand basic economics or monetary policy.

THE DUMBEST PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT OF ALL TIME….
            ===============================================================

Bruce Bartlett has explained, more than once, why this little gimmick would be a dreadful mistake, but he revisited the issue yesterday, calling the latest version of the Republican plan “mind boggling in its insanity.”

In short, this is quite possibly the stupidest constitutional amendment I think I have ever seen. It looks like it was drafted by a couple of interns on the back of a napkin. Every senator cosponsoring this POS should be ashamed of themselves.

Again, that’s a group that includes literally every Republican senator, including the so-called moderates who are presumed to be sane.

  3. July 16, 2011 at 8:22 am

So, mike vicqera on msnbc just did a hit piece in the debt negotiations.
He said the president wants seniors paying more for Medicare! Yeah, the wealthy, which means him and the media. Then, he showed seniors golfing and a clip from the weekly address that said we need shared sacrifice.
Then, he showed boner saying that if the president will not lead we will!
Who is paying this creep, Karl rove? Stunning!

    • July 16, 2011 at 8:48 am

That’s why PBO takes his message directly to the people by doing those local interviews.

      • July 16, 2011 at 9:03 am

I remember when the president was campaigning, he said- no more rovian politics! He forgot the press.
Everyone in the press thinks they are Karl rive these days.
Smears, tearing down, calling people a description before they call you that description. Then, the former bush administration knows how corrupt they were, and they transfer it to this president. Sigh!
Dear I say, rovian politics is alive and well!

        • July 16, 2011 at 10:35 am

I get the feeling they all somehow take their cue from Fox news. Everyone wants to be like Fox. Even with news shedding light on its parent company and its corrupt practices, you would think these people would start to wean themselves off this organization that is a propaganda machine for the right.

I was tempted to write Chuck Todd yesterday and tell him that it is OK to free yourself now. You don’t have to think that if you don’t interrupt the president, the people at Fox news would think that you are part of the liberal biased media.

To my mind, there is very little original thinking in the media. One person says something or coin a phrase, and suddenly it is taken as fact and dissimenated as such. That’s why, in addition to PBO taking his message directly to the people, we have to work our fingers to the bone pushing back at these guys.

The right wing already has Fox and people from the Morning Joe show peddling the Republican talking points from jump in the early morning, while masquarading as middle of the road folks. We are on to them, and we are not going to cut them any slack. They must understand this. Faced with this reality, they won’t be so cavalier in their lies and distortions. And when they do, we hit them back with it in their faces.

They will begin to understand that we mean business.

    • July 16, 2011 at 9:06 am

Guess what he just changed that report to include wealthier seniors.
But it is still slanted reporting. Funny, he must have gotten some WH pushback! Lol!

        July 16, 2011 at 9:10 am

I’m sure folks like Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffet and our PBO wouldn’t mind paying a little bit extra in their golden retirement years, so that “Average grandpa Joe” or “Average Grandma Jane” can still continue to enjoy their same benefits without digging deeper into their pockets.

  5. July 16, 2011 at 9:10 am

Morning, TOD family. Off to register new Obamacrats at our Black Expo celebration today. Looking forward to signing up lots of new voters. Still smiling about President Obama’s masterful press conference yesterday. The GOP are being exposed to the American people.

If anyone has time to send a tweet to @andersoncooper or @AC360 please do. He called himself fact checking PBO’s citing a poll at the presser about 80% of American’s support a balanced approach. Cooper claimed PBO was citing a Gallup poll, then said the Prez was wrong. Trouble is PBO never said the word Gallop. And there have been several polls out. So for Cooper to claim the Pres was wrong is just a flat lie.

May the Dalai Lama bestow some prayers on our President.

Hello Proud, you are on FIRE! I wish you the best of luck at the Black Expo celebration. I will send Mr. Cooper a tweet. Isn’t it funny how the media always jumps to “fact-check” PBO’s pressers and speechs, and let the GOP get away with lies, lies and more lies?

      • July 16, 2011 at 9:28 am

Oops my spelling! Should be Gallup of course. It’s pathetic hopefruit2. They never call the GOP on their lies but want to fact check every syllable the Pres utters.

Hey Proud, thanks for your work. Goodluck out there today. I’m off to tweet Mr Anderson “lacks fact checking” Cooper about his selective hearing regarding the polls PBO referenced in his press conference. You are right; PBO never mentioned any poll by name. He simply said that the polls conducted by news organizations showed that a majority of the American people wanted a balanced approach to a resolution regarding the debt ceiling. Seems like Cooper is beginning to go the way of the other twits at CNN aka Fox News Lite.

And to think that lightweight Anderson Cooper will be moved to the 8.00 pm slot in the Fall. Geez, at least Eliott Spitzer knew his stuff.
Between the frown on his brow, as well as constantly asking other predictable strategists their biased opinions, one often wonders what exactly is Anderson’s special gift?!!!!!

    • July 16, 2011 at 10:01 am

proudofobama, good morning and good luck to you in signing more voters. To hell with those people like Cooper, the sorry ass media. Why aren’t they out reporting on what these GOP Governors are doing in trying to make it harder for certain groups of people to vote? With these Voter IDs, and students not being able to vote where they go to school, cutting the early voting time, all the underhanded stuff they are trying to pull. Just so they can prevent black, latinos, young students from voting. If they can do that, they have a chance. I feel this need to be talked about more. Is their anything the Justice Dept. can do? These GOP want to get rid of this black man so bad, they will do anything, lie, cheat, and steal.

      • July 16, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Rev. Jessie Jackson was on Rachel Maddow show talking about this stuff that these Republicans Governors are doing to try to prevent blacks, latinos, college students from voting. Our Democratic Governor veto the Voter ID Bill they were trying to pass here.

I believe that these kinds of laws being passed are the worst threat to democracy we have seen. If you take account of ALL the evil bills that have become law, or looked at the Supreme Ct. rulings, in total,it is clear to anyone paying attention that our entire way of life, entire democracy is literally under attack from the right.Citizens United was not only wrong, but crippling, the gov’s in red states passing extremely restrictive legislation regarding voting,(by the way, the voter fraud they say is rampant, is nearly non existent) . Add to that the labor laws they tear apart, the anti woman legislation they have signed, the pro corporation legislation that they love and encourage, the wanting to ban agencies like the EPA,etc….really? I know all of us realize these things, but people need to begin to look at all of this IN TOTAL,and pay attention!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our way of life is literally slipping away in favor of big business and corporations that care not at all about the people they would sacrifice to make $$$$$$$$$$$$.
And one more thing…Chips…you are amazing with what you have done to expose the liars and cheats for what they are. AMAZING WORK!!!! Kudos to you, for doing what the paid professionals SHOULD have done…how’s that for sick? We ask journalists to do their jobs, and the President asks Congress to do their’s!!! EAT YOUR PEAS!

“begin to look at all of this IN TOTAL,”

This is my reason for posting this before today. We have our hands full fighting the evil existing in this country……all because a black man is at the helm of government in this land. Rethugs, white men, conservatives (of all stripes), and the stupid, have gone totally berserk since the election of Barack Hussein Obama. Our children are now living the civil rights struggle of the ’60’s. I hope they learn the lessons well.

Exactly right. It’s frightening to me. This, above all else, keeps me up at night.Young people that have no idea what things were like BEFORE these rights were won, need to especially be concerned and aware of what is happening.Others fought and DIED for these rights that some take for granted.I don’t want that to happen.

      Hi Fred,

Saw the video clip of Nikki Haley saying that she will personally drive South Carolina’s 178,000 disenfranchised voters to the DMV, so I contacted OFA and asked them to make a mission of finding as many of these folks and line them up at Haley’s door each and every day for her to fulfill her promise. Of course, to video document everything that takes place. Will Haley get any work done? Starting at 8:30 a.m. and keeping that line stacked would be something to watch and will put a face on this voter suppression.

  10. July 16, 2011 at 11:07 am

Look everyone, someone must be listening to what we are doing. Plouffe just sent this e-mail out with this video that BWD and Chips had up yesterday about the president talking to students on the wise ways of politics.

As of yesterday, I’ve already sent it to everyone in my e-mail list. Let’s make this go viral. This is not just a lesson in politics. These are life lessons, as I stated in a comment yesterday at TPV. I shared the video with my 14-year-old and we later discussed what he understood the president to be talking about.

As in life, we can’t be so rigid in our thinking that we close the door on anything that others have to say.

I belong to a small group in my town called “Yes We Can Pensacola.” We are made up of different affiliations, including our 91-year-old Republican member. While we don’t agree on everything, we respect each other.

Our group goes around town collecting unwanted fruits in people’s yards and we donate it to local food banks. We pick everything from oranges to grapefruits, kumquats — all things citrusy. We’ve gotten one or two calls to pick pears lately.

But the long and short of this is that our president, to my mind, is way, way ahead of his time. I have yet to listen to any politician who sees things so clearly and differently. More importantly, he has been consistent for as long as I can remember. You don’t find that these days. Just look at the crop of candidates in the opposition. They’ve changed their tunes more times than……

That’s why it is laughable when I read about people questioning this president’s character or his values. He lives those qualities everyday without any pretentiousness.

    Hi Everyone,

Just want to say that I agree with some of the comments on the previous thread about Lawrence O’Donnell’s analysis of the President’s press conference. I think he crossed the line last night and called the President dishonest. I do hope that you tweeters deal with him accordingly.

Frankly, I was unhappy with all his shows last week because he professed to know the President’s motives. He might have known Pres. Clinton’s because he worked with him but that does not give him the right to project them unto Pres. Obama.

I didn’t appreciate him calling the President a liar. In the past (B-4 Joe Wilson) when did anyone call the President of The United States, a liar…on national television? I don’t like the total disrespect. I have never heard President Obama say anything remotely close to what some people (and most recently Lawerence) have said about him or to him. Can we have alittle decorum?

Hi socasweet, I too was taken aback with Lawrence’s comments. Very displeased. These pundits flip-flop so much that they lose any credibility with listeners. Please tweeters send him a message!

He made it appear that the President is some sort of “smooth operator” and that’s not who the President is nor is that his goal in governing or campaigning for that matter. A bit too much.

      • July 16, 2011 at 1:59 pm

I totally agree with you all about Lawrence last night. Some folks were touting his commentary, but I found it very offensive. Just because he served in WA, he thinks that he is an expert on what everyone thinks and says. I have to say that this is the one criticism I have against him for a long time. He comes across as a “Mr. know it all”.

Chipsticks, Congratulations. The “here we go again” expose and truth telling on Jane Hamsher (@janehamsher) and Adam Green (@AdamGreenOnline) has been going viral on Twitter. A lot of people who follow Hamsher’s Fire Dog lake (FDL) blog and Green’s PCCC blog are SHOCKED to say the least. The tweets have been gushing like a geyser: “Oh my God these people are horrible!” “Hamsher is done” “Green is a fake” “I can’t believe they took money and never supported any progressive PACs” “Oh my God look at how much money they pocket for themselves” “Hamsher is scum for lying about BO and supporting Ron Paul” And on and on and on. A lot of tweets with links and info on Hamsher’s lies are being retweeted like wildfire. Also Dems for Progress did an analysis report on Hamsher and put out a scathing review that’s shocking and opening a lot of peoples’ eyes. It’s amazing what investigative work like yours can accomplish when merged with the brilliance that is Twitter, Facebook and the rest of the Internet. Now a bunch of these PL types are trying to fight back and calling everyone on Twitter who doesn’t agree with them “Obamabots or Obamabots who drank the Obama Kool Aid” Hahahahaha….. it’s funny. You’ve begun a mini revolution Chips and my fellow Obamabots and now they know they can’t stop us so they intimate that we follow Obama blindly. I’d rather listen and follow a man who is freaking intelligent, pragmatic, doesn’t bitch and moan, but gets the job done and who we may not all agree with 100% of the time, but we know his heart and his policies are in the right place; than be a sucker who ponies up money to firebaggers and teabaggers alike, so they can line their coffers and spin regressive bullshit.

    • July 16, 2011 at 1:42 pm

UTaustin thanks for this fantastic report on what is happening on twitter. I don’t twitter but I love reading what’s trending and the reactions, especially how folks are responding to the faux progressives. I don’t tweet but I can donate. 🙂

Yes, it’s almost like people are obsessing about Hamsher and Green on twitter right now. Let’s hope people begin to turn a deaf ear to their cynical charade.

That’s awesome utaustinliberal. I know I was tweeting like crazy yesterday, so I’m glad my little bit helped. We have power. Ever since we confronted Rachel Maddow, I feel like we have this amazing ability to refute all the cr*p the GOP and the media are saying about President Obama!

      Power to the people!

Here’s a great indepth article in today’s LA Times about the Repugs facing a money challenge

    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-money-2012-20110716,0,6297117.story

“Gingrich nabbed $2.1 million for the quarter, while former Godfather’s Pizza Chief Executive Herman Cain raised $2 million and loaned himself an additional $500,000. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum collected just $582,000.”

  16. July 16, 2011 at 1:59 pm

OK folks. I know Chips frown on us bringing stories over here from the other side. But I just wanted to share with you this diary that I wrote over at gos.

I feel so strongly about these people distorting this president’s records just to line their own coffers. I wrote a diary over there for them to see their heroine in all her glory. Not that they would care about what she does anyway.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/07/16/995276/-Id-rather-be-called-a-Dumb-Mother-F***er-(President)-Obama-Supporter-than-This!!?via=siderecent

I hope Chips is OK with me sharing the link.

Africa, I just read your diary over at DKOS. Thanks for the link. It was respectful, filled with facts and above all firm. The links you provided about TOD that show Hamsher’s lies in black and white will surely open some eyes. I read the comments and a lot of them so far are thankful for your truth telling and are serious about working to re-elect PBO. One male commenter had his head stuck so far up Hamsher’s ass that even when provided with facts he was too blinkered to see the truth. But thankfully others are calling him out. Once again Bravo! Africa. The more we can do to spread truth and get rid of lies, the better it will be for PBO; because in 2012 we’re fighting a different monster: Firebaggers, PL, Teabaggers, GOP and the like.

        July 16, 2011 at 2:52 pm

You’re right utaustin. The PL is in deep anguish right now because their frauds are being exposed and their long held argument that PBO was losing supporters by the minute has been completely bebunked this past few days after the release of the fundraising figures this quarter. They are now feverishly searching for any straw to grasp that would convince them that they are right and Obama supporters are wrong.

There is another diary on the rec list about some so-called older former navy serviceman who is so disappointed that he no longer wants to have anything to do with “his party.” I happen to think this person is a fraud – from their profile they were an Edwards supporter and then they wrote an “Obama suporter” bandwagonist type diary on November 4th after the President had won decisively. On their profile they say that they are Native American, and then one diary they claim they are white. I pointed out some inconsistencies in that diarist’s representation of himself and I was suspended shortly afterward.

      July 16, 2011 at 2:44 pm

By the way, I just got suspended from that site for hinting that they may have GOP operatives there- without directly accusing anyone of being one. Interestingly, I was the one who first brought it to their attention that that long-time DKOS poster by the name of “APA Guy” was also posting on redstate as a conservative. I’m not sure what they eventually did with him but clearly, my posts have been hitting too close to home for more than a few people on that site, who probably have some influence with the management. Needless to say, I emailed management and told them to don’t bother looking for an acknowlegement from me because i’m no longer interested in posting at that cesspool.

Africa, I read your great diary and believe I had a chance to rec’d it before I was suspended.

      • July 16, 2011 at 2:54 pm

You know I think I saw that yesterday. Someone else mentioned that APA guy. When I first noticed that person just before I took a long hiatus last year, he was fully bore a PBO supporter. Then when that (pseudo) Rainbow girl (hope I have this correct) person started tearing down PBO, he changed. He started beating up on the president. If it is really him, I think it was all part of his plan. Go freaking figure.

Then someone posted a piece he wrote over at Redstate the other day. He talked about how he inflitrated the site and all that. People were wondering whether he was one and the same APA guy.

It never ceases to amaze how people are so easily taken in. Then HF2, it occurs to me that the hate for president Obama sometimes obscures any kind of measured thinking.

I can guarantee you that if I had written a piece excoriating PBO today and talking about how he has disappointed me, blah, blah, the usual suspects would have come out praising me from the high heavens. Some of these people are so predictable and so easily fooled.

Thanks, Hope, for checking out my diary.

Africa, I also read your diary. I am so proud of you. I did recommend it. I still go there to check things out and to recommend Eclectablog and TIMT. I haven’t commented on anything since before BWD left. I get so sick of all pettiness and hatred at al socalled left site. I am thankful for those who still weigh in. Thanks again.

          • July 16, 2011 at 3:38 pm

The diary from Kos has now been posted at Young Turks. The commenters there need the other information from Chips first post though. the post about Hamsher’s collusion with the tea baggers. The shit is hitting the fan, and we need to GO NOW! They have no idea that this blog is the source of the information it seems. The discussion is the usual infantile egotisitcal crap you see on Kos, but there are a few sane ones that are shocked.

Africa, I read your diary, it was very good, right to the point.

I always think that any supporter of the Pres. who post diaries or comment on Kos is very brave.

It’s infested with nuts, frauds, pretend lefty, libertarians, greens, etc….and they’re nasty.

Too bad that the nasty Superskeptical or whatever the hell his name is jumped in your diary….it’s very typical, they are like a bunch of hyenas frothing at the mouth.

Nice job, africa. All in all, I’d say the comments were very appreciative and positive…except for the “skepticalman” there’s always someone! I think you surprised many, and I’m certain the veil has been lifted and this news will spread more and more….with that, they will bitch, moan, and breath fire. We have the proof, there is nothing they can say to change the reality. The power is have is a sight to behold, especially when it shows the truth to so many and exposes the lies and shams to the unknowing, naive public. They can make their decisions now, knowing the truth.Nice job!Hugs.

      • July 16, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Thanks. Some people were glad to see the links I used from the stories by Chips. Yeah, that one guy is trying to piss in that water swarming with facts, but no one is letting him get away with it.

They are entitled to their own opinions but not to their own facts when it is evidenced for all to see.

Maybe MSNBC is realizing that they have been marginalizing the Democratic party by kowtowing to the 7 percenters instead of the rest of us. If this is true, it absolutely shows that ratings are the most important ways to rid ourselves of the firebaggers. So glad that my viewings of that Cenk tool was few and far , very far, in between 🙂
ps- if this is true, please, please let the Maddcow be next.

    • July 16, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Beat me to it, DF. Could it be that our prodding of MSNBC is working? The Rev. Al has been on the money and on point. He comes with facts, data, and ready to push back. I deliberately missed the segment the other day with Pat Buchanan. Can’t stand to hear that man’s voice. Will read transcripts, but I refuse to hear him speak.

Before I read all the reviews here, my husband came out and told me how the Rev. Al had given him hell, forcing him to admit that he was wrong about points that he made.

This is good news, if it is true.

*Hey all, just did some catching up on the blog cause I missed alot and also watched the Lawry clips online. I must say, that while it’s true that Lawry’s interpretations of PBO’s actions sound cynical, I think the broader point he’s trying to make is that PBO is playing the Repugs and beating them at their own game. I don’t agree with Lawry when he implies that PBO wants nothing to do with debt and deficit reduction, that he’s only playing a game. Do I believe PBO would have preferred a clean debt ceiling bill? Yes. But I do believe that PBO also wants to get washington’s fiscal house in order and will therefore do all he can, within reason to attain that goal. Regardless of the spin Lawry seems to be doing, there is no doubt that he admires and supports the president. Some might have seen last night’s show and completely gone off Lawry, but let’s remember, 4 out of 5 is way, way better than the 0 for five that others, case in point, Ms. Maddcow and her crazy compatriots i.e: Cenk have been batting all this time.
*Also, you Obot twitterers are seriously wicked awesome! It’s like y’all started some crazy revolution against the PL and I’m so grateful to all of you for publicizing the “here we go again” expose
*Anderson is desperate for ratings… who the hell watches CNN anymore?
    * Africa, you are seriously fracking awesome. Thanks so much for everything you do. 🙂

Yeah, I’m pretty much on the same page as you, Lisa.

I take every pundit with a grain of salt, even those I enjoy, like Lawrence. He got a bit big for his britches with his prognosticating and his attempt to “read” the President last night, but overall he’s cool, and he provides a perspective that many others don’t. I appreciate him because he rarely Chicken Littles and he is relentless at pointing out teapublican obstruction.

I don’t agree with any talking head 100% — they’re only giving their opinions. That’s all it is to me. I enjoy big daddy, lol.

Hey guys, just went over to BWD and the headline is : “Yeah, but where is Matt Damon” —– BWD cited an article on some of the hollywood stars who contributed to PBO including Tom and his lovely wife Rita, George Clooney, Jennifer Garner (Afleck’s wife), Alec Baldwin, WIll Ferrell, Sue from Glee, Gwyneth Paltrow, Speilberg and his wife, etc….. anyway, the article is from Politico so I won’t add the address. I just thought BWD was hilarious with that headline 🙂 🙂 — As far as I’m concerned, Matt can keep his money, given the nature of his recent movies, he’s gonna need it one day soon.
