good grief (again)

Think Progress: One of the major demands that almost all congressional Republicans have made about deficit reduction is that wealthier Americans and large corporations shouldn’t have to pay any more in taxes….

…but one group that Eric Cantor is apparently fine with making pay more is American college students. Cantor, at the White House for budget negotiations, apparently proposed that students who take out student loans should immediately start paying interest, rather than getting to make payments after graduation….

Obama rejected Cantor’s proposal out of hand, saying that he didn’t want to “screw students”. Cantor’s proposal comes at a time when American students are already overwhelmed by student loan debt. In 2008, the average debt that a college student graduated with was a whopping $23,000. American students continue to pay more than most of their developed world neighbors for a college education, and Cantor apparently wants to make it even more difficult for them while not touching the richest Americans.

More here

Cantor, whose father owned a real estate firm and was the state treasurer for Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign, attended an elite private school as a child …. and went on to study at George Washington University, William & Mary Law School and Columbia University.

I’d guess student loans weren’t an issue for young Eric.

Me too, makesense4tulips! Is there no one in Maryland who could challenge this clueless idiot? Come on Maryland! Democrats need to recruit a strong candidate to take on this clown. Any one who thinks billionaires and millionaires should pay less taxes, than they did under Bill Clinton, while wanting struggling students to make interest payments on student loans before they get a job really shows his utter disrespect for the poor and the middle class.

I just completed my master’s degree and I have an ungodly amount of loan debt from over the years. Some of the changes made by the Obama admin to the loan system will help me, but I still have a steep road ahead….I don’t want to be 45/50 and still paying off school loans.

I think that if any member of the TOD Family has contact with someone who is very active in the student organizations such as College Democrats (especially Virginia and DC/Maryland area), you should consider calling them up and asking the students to go out and personally challenge Cantor-the-greedy-rat.

I believe that student activists in his home state should relentlessly ask cantor-the-greedy-rat two questions which would help open wide the debt-ceiling: (i) why are you investing in firm which stands to make money if the American Economy fails (ii) why are trying to attack student prospects for accessing a education ?

if anyone is in contact with student activist, this is a fight they could take on and handle very well

And the Republicans wonder why a majority of college students end up voting for Democrats, Republicans continue to want to sell college students down the river and leave them with debt…. unless they are college students with rich connections (see McCain, John, or Bush, George W.)

Exactly! I’m in college and those loans are no joke! To earn an education, one almost has to go bankrupt. It’s frankly ridiculous. Thankfully, some of the laws President Obama passed helps alleviate some of the pressure but it’s still a HUGE burden and this heartless piece of shit wants students to carry more burden? They complain that we’re lagging behind in education yet they make it so difficult to acquire one. I sincerely hope Karma visits him at his door and teaches him a lesson he’ll never forget.

It’s humorous how the right-wing always put down the so-called elites. Don’t they pay attention to the elites in their party? Eric Cantor is an elitist snob and his buddy, Czar Ryan is doing everything he can to join the club.

By the way, are you aware of the fact that Paul Ryan subsidized his undergraduate tuition with money from Social Security in the form of Survivors Benefits?

    • July 12, 2011 at 1:11 pm

busbus, didn’t know that about Ryan. i guess the following could be true: “People who bite the hand that feeds them usually lick the boot that kicks them.” – Eric Hoffer

      July 12, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Yes, absolutely true about Ryan. In fact, we share some childhood parallels: death of father, social security support for college, even an Ayn Rand phase. The only difference there is that after 6 months I became disenchanted with Ayn because frankly, i was tired of acting like an asshole. Apparently, Paul hasn’t evolved to that stage yet.

I hope more Americans are paying attention to what some of us have been screaming since January 2009: this is ALL about getting rid of President Obama. Republicans aren’t interested in doing what’s right for the country. They’ll let the country go down the toilet if it means that PBO won’t be inaugurated again on January 20, 2013. McConnell has lied about this repeatedly when challenged on it. I guess he’s too old to know that Google exists, and his words have been memorialized forever.

These men and women are such evil people. In the middle of a time in our country where men and women and children are hurting so much, these fools are speaking all of this manure to all of us is shameful. But, let us stand tall, focus on the prize of goodness, and support our President with every ounce of our being to win this battle. It is a spiritual battle. Evil vs. Good. But, you know who will win, the righteous because we are fighting for the right things for peoples lives. We Will Win with honor, dignity, and respect. It is what is in your heart that counts. We Will Be Fine. Let us just keep supporting Presidsent Obama, knocking down the lies, and fighting for the just causes. I just received a beautiful letter from the President yesterday thanking me and those of us who pray for him and meditate in our own ways to lift him up daily in a good and positive way. He said that he really do appreciate that and he counts on that. It was a gracious letter. So let us take courage and stand with him.

yup, power hungry little troll. too bad he doesn’t know what to do with it once he gets it. 🙄 —-in regards to an article stating that in Monday’s meeting with PBO, Little Lord Pompous Ass was floundering, while Rusty sat back and watched.—–if it’s true what the article contends which is basically that Lord Pompous Ass got too big for his britches and went against what Bonehead wanted- a large deal- so Bonehead is- I presume- giving Harum Scarum enough rope to do the honorable thing. If this is what I hope it is, it’s the smartest idea that Bonehead has ever had.

    Squeaky little privileged weasel!

Even with undergrad scholarships, two of my children finished graduate school with nearly $70,000. in debt between them, even though they both worked nearly full time. PHD’s don’t come free and the school demands at that level are tremendous. I don’t know how they did.

Good Morning and Afternoon my TOD Family: I am sitting here reaading all of your comments, and I feel my pressure rising becausing I am so upset. I know how difficult it is for students whether you are completing your undergrad work or your advanced degrees. I have a neice who completed her Masters and she is working but still paying on her loand. The awful inconsiderate evil people like Cantor, McConnell and all the rest will pay for this stuff.(You know what I want to say, but I need to get myself together) I hate this mess when they are messing with my young adults who are going to college and trying to make a better life for themselves and also trying to do as the President says, “Get your education so we can have more educated young people to be able to make this country better and to be able to compete with India, and China ets.” And the evil greedy you know what are trying to stab you all in the back. There will be no good things coming to these people believe me. I have seen people sceew people, and it does come back to them. This is just plain evil. I am so upset because I am currently reading an excellent book : “The Price of Admission”, by Daniel Golden. Get it and read it and write to your representativve, senator, and get in the street of Eric Cantor’s state and distsrick and protest. If I lived there, I would be with you all with all of my energy. I am going to write to my senator here in Ca. about what Mr. Cantor has said. Cantor is an evil man. I am sorry for the rant, but I find this to be so offensive to the young people and parents. We will get it together, though. President will NOT allow this to happen.

It will go nowhere, but my dear HZ, YOU must not let it upset you. Buddhists believe people are acting out their conditioning. Cantor will be what he will be.

But YOU are important. Healing thoughts on the way to get those BP nos to stay low. (I should talk, LOL: I’m on Lisinopril :))

Thank you gc. I know that in my heart, but thank you so much for reminding me. I am calming down. You know me, I have to get out my devotional readings, light my candles and put on my music and pray very hard. so that is where I am going to spend some time now in my quiet space in my library and musicroom. Thank you. I know not to let it get the best of me because I need to keep my best for all of you. And I will do that, trust me. I love ouy all back.

    • July 12, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Deep cleansing breaths, HZ and calm your BP. Evil has a way of coming right back on the folks who send it out. Think of it like a mirror that reflects back just what is presented into it. PBO has got this. I trust him.

STUNNING Speaker Boehner just said this: ““Where’s the President’s plan?” asked House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) at a press stakeout after a GOP caucus meeting. “When’s he going to lay his cards on the table? This debt limit increase is his problem.”

His problem!?! His problem that a routine, purely congressional matter (raising the debt ceiling) is being held hostage because Republicans who pretend to care about debt, but actually care about leaving the wealthy free to enjoy low tax rates!?!

He is feeling the pressure. PBO just told CBS news, no guarantee that ss checks will go out on August 3rd if the ceiling is not raised.

CBS is reporting from interview airing tonight: President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks.

This shows that Cantor doesn’t know who He is talking to.Our President and his wife know about student loans first hand for they paid theirs not to long ago. So this silver spoon fool needs to shut his mouth and hope he gets to stay in the House when his time comes to be reelected. I promise to help fund his rival when ever that day comes. This jerk needs to be sent back to side lines.

His profile is being raised higher. AP/Yahoo! had a blurb about him holding the strong line. His picture was in the WashPost, not Johnny of Orange. I thought with Orange’s alleged problems they’d have tried to push him out before he was named Speaker. Instead, they seem content to weaken him before taking him out. Back to Can’tor: as a wealthy son of a Virginia family, I was surprised that I wouldn’t have seen him at UVa. I actually went to GW for grad school years later and it has raised its undergrad standards but it was definitely a safety school when he was there.
