the professional left’s heroine…. (updated)

Read Shoq’s experience with Miss BP here – and their Twitter exchange here

****

This gem of a 2010 story by David Weigel (now Slate) in the Washington Independent can never be re-posted enough:

Weigel was reporting on an anti-healthcare reform Tea Party rally where he spoke to one of the organizers and speakers, Kathryn Serkes. She told him:

“I’m in contact with folks on the progressive side. They’re saying right now that Pelosi’s almost there with the votes. What they’re saying is that there’s some serious arm-twisting – their words were union thuggery. One progressive source told me that there was serious union thuggery this weekend, targeting Rep. Jason Altmire (D-Pa.).”

The source, she confirmed, was Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake.

Weigel emailed Hamsher to ask her if she was, in fact, working with the Tea Party on the issue and if she had used the term “union thuggery” in her conversations with Serkes.

Hamsher didn’t reply, instead posting this at Firedoglake in response to his report (‘Tea Party Activist Working With Firedoglake’s Hamsher on HCR Whip Count’ – here)

“Dave Weigel isn’t a journalist, he’s a smear-monger that makes things up and projects his own fantasies onto his stories ….I know Katherine, we were on MSNBC together and we’ve spoken about working on the pot legalization measure in California in the future …. she tells me that when Weigel approached her and asked her who her “source” was, she didn’t say. He said “It’s Jane Hamsher, isn’t it…I’ve been around.” According to Katherine, she didn’t respond.

….I’m not “working” with the tea partiers on health care. But Weigel doesn’t care about the truth …. He’s just a fantasist printing propaganda, and the Washington Independent has no higher standards than to print it.”

Problem?

Weigel had a recording of his conversation with the Tea Party woman:

SERKES: They’re saying that there’s some serious arm-twisting, and their words were union thuggery.

WEIGEL: Who’s the they?

SERKES: The progressive side. A progressive source told me that there was serious union thuggery going on this weekend.

WEIGEL: Is this the Firedoglake folks?

SERKES: It’s Jane. You’re figured it out.

WEIGEL: I’m not new at this.

SERKES: She said they were after Altmire this weekend. Yeah, because Jane and I last talked Saturday.

Hamsher’s response to being outed?

“Weigel has now posted the audio tape of his conversation with Katherine Serkes at the Tea Party event, in which he does not inform her that he was taping her. The recording confirms that she did use my name, however. I’ve asked Weigel twice now if at any point prior to this segment he informed her that she was being recorded, and he has not responded.

…. attending a Tea Party event and taping attendees without their knowledge, then posting that tape to discredit them in support of passing the health care bill, sounds more like the actions of a Democratic political operative …. he aspires to be a member of a cliquish, insider set with the moral flexibility to align themselves with anyone in power.”

Ah yes, the big issue here was the recording, not the fact that it had been revealed that Hamsher was working with the Tea Party towards their common goal: the defeat of President Obama’s healthcare bill. Or that Serkes quoted Hamsher using Tea Party speak: “Union thuggery.” Note how she failed to address being exposed, instead resorting to personal abuse.

(Links: here and here)

After exposing Hamsher, Weigel asked for “an apology and a retraction” – he’s still waiting.

Fox and Friend:

Yep, she joined in on Fox News’ ‘Kill The Bill’ campaign, appearing on the network soon after calling for a boycott of it.

This story, from May of this year, is an eye-opener too:

Mike Elk (ExiledOnline, May 2011): Yesterday I confronted Jane Hamsher, founder of Firedoglake, over her refusal to honor a labor boycott against the Huffington Post that two major writers unions have called for.

… Hamsher wasn’t satisfied merely crossing the picket line: She went on the offensive against boycott organizers … In an email exchange with several members of the labor movement, Hamsher jeered at the writers’ union organizers, mocking their organizing efforts….

In response to Hamsher’s outrageous anti-labor attacks, I wrote to one of these listserv groups on which both Hamsher and I were members: “Jane Hamsher the last person I would ever want to have as my shop steward” … this was not the first time Hamsher has taken a position hostile to workers’ rights and labor ….

…Hamsher also attacked Sal Roselli (president of the National Union of Healthcare Workers) implying that he was an Italian thug, an old tactic used by anti-labor PR people to smear labor activists as mobsters ….

….When I raised this ugly episode yesterday in the context of Hamsher’s attacks on the HuffPo boycott, Hamsher responded to me, “You’re just halucinating [sic] now, Mike. I never ‘tried to get people fired from their jobs,’ nor did I ever use ‘race baiting language to paint Sal Roselli as a thug.’….You’re either really mentally ill, or incredibly malicious.”

….. This was a new low for Hamsher…….

Osborneink.com (December 2010): Jane the Hamsher is one of the cool kids… yet she wouldn’t recognize progress if it smacked her in the face, and so far has achieved nothing resembling progress on any front. Indeed, I have been waiting for someone to tell me what this woman’s “progressive” credentials are.

She is first and foremost a self-aggrandizing publicity whore whose Accountability Now PAC has so far given $0 to progressive candidates in the first two years of its existence while spending $285,272. If she ran a non-profit this way, it would get shut down. As things stand, the PAC (which also counts Kos and Glenn Greenwald as operators) has only made noise.

…. Hamsher’s kill-the-bill madness included an appearance on FOX News just months after her own call to boycott the network. She later returned to that channel spouting nonsense about cap-and-trade. Her recent appearances on Lawrence O’Donnell leave me convinced progress is not her purpose.

Jane has a troubling problem with transparency and truthfulness…..

rcade (DK, March 2010): Firedoglake publisher Jane Hamsher has become one of the most polarizing figures in the liberal blogosphere, moving people sharply to the pro or con column with her outspoken opposition to the health care reform bill, appearances on Fox News bashing the Obama administration and the letter she sent with conservative activist Grover Norquist demanding the resignation of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Hamsher wields a lot of influence by operating two Democratic political action committees, FDL Action PAC and Accountability Now PAC. By the end of 2009 these PACs had accumulated $454,000 from thousands of individual donors….

The Federal Election Commission reports show that Hamsher’s PACs are a significant source of income for Firedoglake, but my experience trying to question her about them suggests that she’s not big on transparency.

… Accountability Now collected $113,695 in donations during 2009, as it reported to the FEC, and spent $169,992 that year on nine consultants … including Hamsher ($24,000) and PAC cofounder Glenn Greenwald ($24,000)….

Osborneink: …. Jane Hamsher is quite obviously accepting money from BP. Why is that important? Because according to Hamsher, anyone who takes money from the oil company is guilty of selling out:

“Carbon cap and trade was a scheme cooked up by BP and Enron lobbyists in the mid nineties. BP has subsequently dropped millions of dollars into the coffers of green groups to pave the way for it. Obama’s cry to pass Kerry-Lieberman as punishment for BP is not only highly ironic, it’s also illustrative of just how broken our national discourse around environmental issues has become.

Until progressive groups successfully address the challenge of funding themselves independent of the elite individuals and institutions that act as enforcers of a corporate agenda, they will not be able to successfully advocate for progressive causes. Any success they might have will mean that their funding dries up, and they will cease to exist.”

I used to post there way back during the early days of Valerie Plame. But Jane became increasingly mean and unpredictable, viciously removing people from the blog without explanation. I left shortly after it became apparent that this was becoming a pattern. She is an ugly vindictive person who is not on our side. I detest everything FDL stands for. SELF-serving profit-mongering ugliness.

Me4 – I just got home, caught up with the infighting on our blogs. Deja vu-ish, not in a good way, but obviously much less ugly. At any rate, a few people’s comments struck me as golden – and yours was one. I don’t even remember what you said, but I thank you.

I never anticipated that members here would snap at each other, regardless of job numbers. I succumbed a bit, but not as much as I was tempted.

We must stick together because that is the RW and the UNprof left’s aim – divide and conquer! Black folks have never had it easy and to think that was going to change with PBO was just wishful thinking. Fantastic expose Chipsticks!

Fortunately, it is July, 2011, not July, 2012 and so much of the hate-filled, avarice-driven, supposed ‘left’ are now, more and more, being exposed and should continue to be called out for just what they are – treacherous purveyors of harm to America.

They are certainly not representative of the Democratic base.

They are, in fact, totally indistinguishable, in motive and method, from the teabagger ‘right.’

These folk thrive only because a segment of the American population – far, far from the majority – are products of a failed education system and, thereby, easy prey for the fear-mongering, sky-is-falling, poutrage-of-the-day that newstainers and their lame stream corporate producers are only too eager to dish.

We know what we must do.

Crystal clear messaging of our purpose and our unflagging commitment to a better quality of life for every American and to the reality that the path, the arc, the vector to that better quality of life is what President Obama and most members of the Democratic Party are committed to delivering.

    Yes.We.Can. … DO.More.Together!

“They are, in fact. totally indistinguishable, in motive and method, from the teabagger ‘right.’ Precisely….I think many of us came to that disappointing conclusion. So extreme, it is difficult to determine where one ends and the othe begins.

If you didn’t know that the quotes were attributable to Hamsher….you would still know it’s extreme thinking, and the mean and nasty delivery of those we equate with the far Republican right.

You are absolutely on target, Bobfr. I briefly visited FDL in 2009 and then avoided it like the plague. I don’t see anything liberal or progressive about FDL or Hamsher and I don’t understand a supposed liberal perspective that would see it that way. They sound so much like the Tea Party that I can’t tell them apart.

But that aside, you are absolutely right. Shine the light on them and expose their tactics.

Because of this post, out of curiosity I went to the FDL frontpage, which I rarely do anymore after being a regular there in the early daze. It literally has a post titled “Worst President Ever, Revisited” written by someone I used to “converse” with there, who is making the case that Stanley Ann’s son will be, if not not already, the worst President in American history. From experience, its pointless to engage the pathology anymore, just like attempting to have a conversation with Charles Manson would be, so I didn’t even bother leaving links such as this:

    http://www.hamell.net/?p=703

…which makes a good case with simple facts that Barack Hussein Obama is one of the better Presidents in US history…just 2 years in.

One of the last times I checked in there was the night of the bin Laden announcement. Now mind you, for a long time I’ve joked how “true progressives” yell “Shirley Sherrod!!1!!1” in an almost Tourette’s-like fashion at any issue, sort of like the “this is good news for McCain.” I’m not kidding…that night of the bin Laden announcement…the main page featured a post going on about the injustices of Shirley Sherrod as if President Obama himself caused her problems, and the poster was in the comments diminishing the bin Laden news, and going on about Shirley Sherrod. I kid you not. And despite the fact that the Shirley Sherrod story has ended up as a net-positive for her and the issues she champions. They simply pretend that part has never happened.

Thanks for following the money about all this (FDL & Friends), Chipsticks. This Michael Whitney character has been especially comical to me. When first announced he was joining there, I clicked on his bio and through to his personal site. Looked like the young whippersnapper had just graduated from an expensive, prestigious college, and done very little else out in the “real world” of labor relations. He immediately was condescending and dismissive to people such as America’s first melanin-enhanced President, and the arguments for incrementalism that people like myself would often make. Keep in mind, I come from a long line of union blue-collar workers, worked on assembly lines to pay my way through a public university, and actually unionized my first place of employment years ago as 22 year old (when Whitney was pooping in his pampers if even born), through a lot of resistance and many moments of fearing for my physical safety. And here’s this twerp lecturing and ignoring people like me, and those much more experienced than me, on labor relations?!? It was weird.

I’m just shocked that I spent any time there and actually used to respect what many of the sociopaths there would have to say. I’ll chalk it up to a good learning experience for myself, as I continue to learn and grow as a person. Now back to business…who is going to their local OFA event this week? Fired up!

Just need to say. I would never have heard of Jane Hamsher or Glen Greenwald if I hadn’t started visiting this site and BWD. I know a lot of people here are more involved with politics than I have been up until now but I really doubt that these people have that much influence with your average person. I have nothing against people on the left, I share many of their genuine concerns. But it seems that they are been led by the nose by charlatans. I hope they wake up to what is happening. Like foxes in the hen house as my mother would say.

I don’t get a chance to check in here until later in the evening so I missed much of the action today. Looks like there was a little bit of in-fighting. I hope everyone is feeling better about things by now. I know the President really does care about the average person so lets just have a little faith and see what happens. I intend to tweet and email my desire for a solution that I personally would prefer but in a respectful and polite manner. I think the President invited us to do just that at the twitter town hall. He asked us what we would like to keep and what we would like to cut. I do believe he was hoping for responses that would be a useful bargaining chip for him in the negotiations.

Yes, this is what have to be done! They have to be exposed for who and what they are. The impostors has infiltrated the Progressives, and has taken leadership roles, where people would put their trust and money into. In 2010, the influence of these people were very apparent, for they depressed the base, by distorting President Obama and Dems accomplishments. Their jobs, is to poke holes into every thing, that this president accomplished, and the delusion that it’s not good enough, and it worked. I’m happy that they are being exposed, and every time they come on TV or whatever, keep posting this information, until everybody knows. Thank you for all you do, for all this, stems from lots of work. Thank you!

This Hamsher woman, reminds me of that Birther fruitcake, I can not think of her name. Both of them act as if they have some mental issues. I don”t know either one very well, but from what I do know they can’t be trusted and they do not represent anything Democratic.

I believe the birther fruitcake you’re thinking of is Orly Taitz. And yes they do resemble each other in their level of unhealthy and negative obsession with this good President.

That mental issue is called hate! I don’t know how they live with that dark, heavy and poisonous feeling within their hearts. For sooner or later, it will destroy you.

Afro-Americans? Seriously? I haven’t seen one besides Cornell West (and maybe Don King at a stretch) since 1976!
Gee, someone needs to help her and tell her if she wants to target a certain group, it would be good to find a group of more than 2.
Yeah, that’s what you get for being an ignorant, “culturally challenged” meaning **** cist, *itch.

  39. July 9, 2011 at 10:36 am

    Chipsticks,

Thank you for this effort. It warms my heart to see more people stepping up to put an end to this ruinous woman’s reign of Terror over progressives. She, Glenn Greenwald and Adam Green have made careers out of promoting themselves at the expense of anything resembling coherent efforts to move progressivism down the field. They obsessively bully and badger their critics, relying on a legion of loyal readers who glommed onto them when blogging was in its infancy, and who cannot now recognize intellectual con artists and grifters when they see them in print every day. And the MSM is always eager for some Obama-bashing (and free) content, are always willing to pimp their wretched product whenever it appears on the shelves.

Greenwald is now the bread and butter of Salon, so they won’t reign him in, and Jane’s CommonSense Media holds other bloggers by the shorties, so they won’t touch her out of fear for their ad revenues. It’s a terrible state of affairs, and one we must find a way to fix.

Below, I am linking to an old post of mine that leads to more of my own work on Jane, Glenn, and their machinations. At the bottom of each post are related links, each containing more rarely seen stuff written about these phonies:

      Hi Shoq,

Great to hear from you, really appreciate you dropping in.

I just read through your post at the link and your Twitter exchange with Miss BP, it’s astonishing, she is an utterly vile piece of work. My God, she even dragged your elderly mother in to her attacks on you.

What’s most striking is the ease with which she lies (as both you and Weigel exposed), and her uncontrolled fury with anyone who dares challenge her.

Note how she said to you “U seem mentally tenuous” and to Mike Elk “you’re either really mentally ill, or incredibly malicious” (after he had told her he struggled with depression and Asperger’s Syndrome).

So, anyone who challenges her is mentally unstable? Wow.

Greenwald, of course, uses precisely the same method: incandescent rage accompanied by a flood of personal venom. I’ve lost count of the number of feuds he’s started with writers/commentators when, rather than debating facts, he chose to shower them with personal abuse and question their political agendas.

This from the guy who has taken Charles Koch/Cato Institute bucks, just as Miss BP profits from that big-hearted, ethical oil company.

And they question other people’s agendas!

And look what she allows on her site, as ABL at Balloon Juice spotted – someone promoting a ‘Primary Obama’ campaign who said:

“Much better would be to go on the offensive, IMO. I.e., exploit this dustup [sic] (with West’s blessings, of course), to take things to a higher level. Specifically, West, with the NPA’s backing, could undertake an education program, with the initial target the US black community, of teaching them about, say, Obama’s Top 10 betrayals, and Obama’s Top 5 betrayals of Afro-Americans.”

“An education program …. of the US black community?”?

      “Obama’s Top 5 betrayals of Afro-Americans”??

(Why did John at Balloon Juice step in at the end of ABL’s post and defend Hamsher? This stuff appeared on her site on May 18 – and it’s still there. If she objected to it she would have had it removed).

Can anyone tell FDL from Free Republic any more?

I wonder did ABL get a ‘you’ll never work in this town again’ message from her “hall monitor”, like Mike Elk did? It’s breathtaking.

Shoq, I know it must feel like a losing battle most of the time, but more and more I am seeing these people being exposed for being the frauds that they are, mainly on sites like yours. Their goal is to put a Koch-funded Republican in the White House next year, educating “Afro-Americans” along the way. I ****ing despise them.

It bothers me so enormously that someone supposedly on the side of all that is beautiful and pure and good trafficked in the sort of bs caricatures and language about Speaker Pelosi’s efforts to whip votes for historic healthcare reform law—“union thuggery.” When our supposed overlords in the new media have soooooo much contempt for traditional Democratic constituencies when they think no one’s listening: unions, black folks, liberals (depicted as weak capitulators for having the nerve to not be purists), then truly, what does that say about these media-driven “leader” personalities who seem to me to be all about themselves? Thanks so much for this series of exposes; I look forward to the additional pieces.

  43. July 9, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Chips, I too concur. This is a masterpiece. And this is exactly what we need to do: expose these haters and bigots for what they are. They are greedy and looking for a way to line their pockets. Every time I see her face or that schmuck Adam Green I want to vomit. The fact that Ed Schultz has them on all the time and Rachel tells you all you need to know about them. I will tweet your article every day to remind people of who we’re dealing with. Heartless, greedy people who will do anything to divide PBO’s base. This attack on AAs is most offensive. It’s coming from hateful Hamsher, Bachmann, Newt. Pretending they “care” about black unemployment. And trying to blame it on the black guy.

We need to take no prisoners in our push back on these haters, just as you have done. It’s an amazing piece or research and writing. Thank you!

As for divide and conquer in the AA community, and this is what some are trying, Rev Al just spoke very passionately about it on his radio show yesterday. He is aware and most AA’s prefer to hear from him rather than the fakes spoken of here. I don’t know them, don’t want to know them, but I rely on you who have stronger stomachs than I to stay abreast. They will be dealt with, make no mistake about it.

To use an unkind phrase from my childhood, “Hamsher and other like her can soo my loo.” I’m not going to explain this as it means something very, very ugly. After all of the news that has come out and PBO, Leader Pelosi, and the dems have made it perfectly clear that no cuts to Social Security, Medicaid, or Medicare benefits will be made, this witch’s blog had a post earlier today entitled, “Dems can just say no to benefit cuts.” I saw it on a link at another blog, and all I could think was WTFrack? Either she and her “writers” are stupid, she’s a hateful divisive individual, or her focus is on driving traffic to her blog and increasing her profits. Some may choose one/two of these, but I choose all three. I stopped visiting that blog over two years ago and removed it from my list of bookmarks. I don’t like hateful people, and I don’t like liars. I could tell at the time I stopped reading anything on her blog or watching her on MSNBC that her opposition to PBO and his policies was self-serving and based on who/what he is: America’s first black president. I could tell that his being black was, in her mind, a reason to distrust him. Once you’ve been exposed to people like Hamsher, Greenwald, Adam Green, Cornel West, Tavis Smiley, and others like them, you know them and what their motives are after hearing them speak, or after reading what they write, the first time. After I determine who/what these tools are, I devote no more of my time to them because their vision and goals for this country have nothing in common with mine.

  46. 94 Tally
    July 9, 2011 at 8:20 pm

I been thinking about all of this long and hard, and I think majii nailed a big part of it with ” or her focus is on driving traffic to her blog and increasing her profits.” But it’s PART of something else:

My old friend who runs a left blog – the one who I wrote the rant to that Chips posted as
http://theobamadiary.com/2011/06/17/a-few-words-from-tally/ – who I wrote to when he asked what his blog readers would like to see more of, has been losing readership ever since Obama took office.

His readership has fallen for several reasons, but allow me to give a little background first. He started his blog sometime in the late 90’s, and gained popularity towards the end of the Clinton administrations because of his enormous support for them, knowledge and hatred for the Bush family, and brilliantly funny way he wrote. But at the point, he still had a day job and the blog was a hobby.

During the 2000 election disaster his blog exploded, since a bazillion people awoke to politics when the rightwing court appointed a president over the will of the people, and an honest recount of their votes. Needless to say, many of us were looking for a way to fight back, and the internet exploded as well.

During the 8 year national nightmare of the Ex-Texas Governor’s occupation of The White House, he received so much support and money he was able to quit his day job and virtually retire and write his blog and make a nice living at it. (Granted, he lives in a very inexpensive area of the country too so that helped.)

As a big Clinton supporter, he went all-in for Hillary, and was a little miffed when Obama won the Primary, but was a good Democrat and got behind him.

I’m sure each and every one of you remember the outright ELATION election night of 2008, and the ecstasy of Grant Park. From that moment, Bush virtually (and joyfully) retired, and Obama stepped up and began putting everything in place so he could go to work January 21st, 2009.

Many MANY people gave a huge sigh of relief since the smartest guy ever was now the POTUS, and we had control of both Houses of Congress. Many people stopped hanging on the blogs and went back to their lives because the adults were back in charge, and they assumed they’d do their jobs. A lot of his support left then. Just because part of the fight was over.

I have said time and again, that Americans have the memories of goldfish, and many people, Dems included, forgot the eight year war the GOP waged on President Clinton. Having said that, many of us didn’t forget, and expected it from day one – we just didn’t expect them to act this crazy, as in non-stop filibustering, and Palin becoming the rightwing’s own Charles Manson.

To handle this new warfront, my friend’s blog lost all the funny, and turned into a virtual angry daily of What Would Hillary Do? Hillary would fight harder, and has more experience, etc. etc. etc. He lost a lot of subscribers.

Then he doubled down on that and added, “And when Obama folds again…” etc etc etc ad nauseam. He lost more people. A lot of his readers, myself included, begged him to stop and support the POTUS, and reminded him of – everything I said in my rant – and kept telling him YOU ARE NOT HELPING. YOU ARE HURTING US AND YOURSELF. But he didn’t listen, and is not listening to this day.

There are two things at work:

    1. These people who make a living blogging and having an opinion, make more money when their side is losing. When there is something to fight about. If the GOP gain power, they think their readers will come back, support them, and take up the banner and fight the good fight. Well, I hate to be the harbinger of fate and bad news, but the only thing I believe will happen, is they will BLAME THEM, and HOLD THEM RESPONSIBLE. If they were my employees, I’d have to fire them for burning down my business and driving my clientele away.

    2. They are under the delusion Hillary will primary Obama, even when she has said numerous times, NO. Of course, most of them won’t say her name, they say, SOMEONE PLEASE – when they mean Hillary. They are still hanging onto a hope that doesn’t exist. (Besides, she’d be better suited for a lifetime gig on the SCOTUS than an 8 year gig as POTUS anyway, and until we get five women on that court it will never be a fair representation of the population of this country.)

Most of these EmoFauxProgs are diehard Hillary supporters. They could care less if she ran, and split and destroyed the entire Left/Progressive movement.

They also have no real clue about Obama, or the reason NO ONE WHO KNOWS HIM WILL PRIMARY HIM. Those that do know him, know they’ll get buried, because he is THE SMARTEST GUY TO EVER HOLD THE OFFICE.

I feel sorry for some of these people. I feel many of them meant well, but have clearly lost their way. My friend isn’t even making money on clicks any more because no one goes to his page. Many of us tried to help. I still hope he sees the light. I thought he would with the Birth Certificate/Trump takedown/Bin Laden Weekend of Epicness, but if he did, it was fleeting. He’s my friend, so I care. ALthough I’m losing hope. He lost all reason this week with that stupid unsourced Washington Post article, and couldn’t be talked away from the cliff even when I explained that Obama has said NO CUTS IN **BENEFITS** – words matter! He acts like he’s from the future, and knows that the Ryan Plan is already in place…..

I’m so thankful TOD and BWD are here. I’d be lost without my family. ❤¹⁰

What an absolutely stunning expose. How anyone who claims to be a “Progressive” or “Liberal” or “Left-leaning” or even “Democrat” can take this woman and Firedoglake seriously as honest brokers for liberal causes boggles my freakin’ mind. Talk about drinking the Kool-Aid.

I mean, anyone can have an opinion, but facts are facts, and the facts here are absolutely devastating for anyone who takes Hamsher and her website as anything but satire.
