‘the politics of least resistance’

CBS: The White House and Republican leaders had been negotiating recently over a comprehensive deal that would produce $4 trillion in savings, hoping to avoid defaulting on the nation’s debt ahead of an Aug. 2 deadline to raise the debt ceiling.

On Saturday night, House Speaker John Boehner abandoned the deal, saying a mid-size package of reforms that do not include any kind of increase in taxes on anyone is the only politically viable solution…

The White House responded by releasing a statement decrying the move, saying that “congressional leaders…must reject the politics of least resistance and take on this critical challenge.”

In a statement, Boehner said: “Despite good-faith efforts to find common ground, the White House will not pursue a bigger debt reduction agreement without tax hikes. I believe the best approach may be to focus on producing a smaller measure, based on the cuts identified in the Biden-led negotiations, that still meets our call for spending reforms and cuts greater than the amount of any debt limit increase.”

In response, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said: “We cannot ask the middle-class and seniors to bear all the burden of higher costs and budget cuts. We need a balanced approach that asks the very wealthiest and special interests to pay their fair share as well. Both parties have made real progress thus far, and to back off now will not only fail to solve our fiscal challenge, it will confirm the cynicism people have about politics in Washington.”

The move by Boehner means the negotiations will likely fall back on the smaller reform package that Vice President Joe Biden and GOP leaders had been negotiating, which would amount to as much as $2.4 trillion in savings. That package includes only cuts to federal agency budgets and modest reforms to entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicaid.

I heartily concur. FUCK HIM and the rest of the KLAN GOP. How the hell do these numbnuts figure they can come to a deal that doesn’t include closing tax loopholes and tax hikes. How the fuck is the government supposed to provide services if it doesn’t continuously receive a commensurate amount of revenue? Do they think they can pluck money from a magical tree and pay SS benefits, pay soldiers, pay federal workers, pay medicare and medicaid benefits, provide pell grants and scholarships for colleges, pay for school lunches, pay for roads and transportation? If I could walk up to any member of the GOP and PIMP SLAP THE SHIT OUTTA THEM, I’D DO SO IN A HEARTBEAT. While doing that, I’d make the orange oompa lumpa cry until his lacrimal duct couldn’t secrete tears anymore.

And utaustinliberal, the blocking of those important ducts will surely cause Mr. Speaker some severe pain. These people do not realize the pain that they will cause on people and this country. Are they that dumb?

Unfortunately, a lot of Americans think that the government does pay for these things magically and that’s why they eat up Republican framing. The sad fact is that John Boehner and the Repubs want PBO to do their job for them, cut the welfare state, and then they will run ads in 2012 saying the Dems cut SS and Pell Grants when they were the ones who wanted the cuts anyway. This is exactly how this is going to end up.

Tally, I think that Mr. Speaker just messed up with the wrong man known as Mr. President, Barack Obama. Watch for the news tomorrow. Mr. Speaker will not get any sleep tonight. These people have no soul or heart. I would hate to be the Mr. Speaker tonight and in the meeting tomorrow. Send your tissues to Mr. Speaker, John Boehner. You can count on it, President Barack Obama will not need any. Count on it.

This is disturbing to me.The American people need to wake up and see these domestic terrorists for what they are. I hope you’re right HZ….and I hope that the President has an ace up his sleeve that will cut these arrogant assholes down to size. What that might be, I have no idea. The money flows like a river to wealthy, and gets cut to smitherines on everyone else……Tweeters can you bombard that idiot??/

  11. July 9, 2011 at 10:28 pm

This doesn’t surprise me and neither does the reversal reported yesterday. Baynor blinked several weeks ago when he went on TV and said that he would like to wrap up negotiations quickly and way before the deadline.

I really believe in my heart that this President is NOT playing with these fools. Enough!. Remember that word and the look on his face. I really do believe that they think that they are dealing a toy. They have not been paying attention. I believe our President has his chess board set up just right for this foolish and beyong childish behavior. And to think of it, our young children have been paying attention to this President more than the foolish sorry behind people.

The republicans just showed their hands to the american people. They stood in front of the cameras for over a month now screaming we need to make serious cuts and when serious cuts were put on the table they balk because what they truely want is to protect the richest 1% of americans.

    Republicans just got served.

bjw2, have you ever been served papers or know of someone who has been served? You are so right. The Republicans just got served by someone, BUT wait until July 10,2011, at the Whitehouse, they will get served by The President of the United States. “Are you John Boehner? ” Yes.” “You have been served, sir” Now sit the down and listen up.

PResident : well, look, Bob I tried to work with the soon to be Ex speaker of the house but he failed and now am looking forward to tackle the national debt with the next Speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi. Yes we can win the future.

Bob sheifer: republican nominee Michelle Bachman same question, what can we do to cut the deficit.
Bachman: well first of all I will bow down to my husband and ask him is the country is really ready to cut the deficit because the barbarians are too lazy and obamacare well, i will cut taxes and stop all abortions, planned parenthood, the founding fathers will have to approve whether blacks are better off now or then. Am the real American so I will solve the debt problem.

Bob sheifer 😦 America this country is in your hands please vote for 😯 wisely. Goodnight my friends.

I posted this on an earlier thread.

His action does not surprise me one bit – I actually expected it once the President announced he was going big on the deal…ie willing to consider cuts/tax savings of $4 trillion rather than $2trillion.
This was a well-played political move to box in Boener and his cronies and expose their true intentions to those who still can’t understand the level of treachery and cynicism from these so-called leaders of the GOP. Some of us were pulling out their hairs when he announced a couple of days ago he wanted to tackle this deficit problem more robustly….all the agitation about SS/medicare/medicaid cuts, which was mostly unfounded. This is rich, coming from these same people who have been blathering about the need to solve our deficit problems asap.
Once again GOP leadership has brought their amateurish checkers skills to a professional chess game…I’m just waiting for the checkmate move by President Obama.

On a different topic….I read all the hand-wringing and dejection on the threads yesterday following the release of jobs #s and unemployment stats with a little amusement. That we had a small blip on the mostly positive trajectory of this economic recovery, did not call for us all to go on prozac. All the micro-economic indices point to a continued improvement on the jobs front. So TOD family, just relax – the world is not ending. We have someone in the WH who is focused on that north star and not on the day-to-day changes that the simple-minded and ignorant in the media and the GOP are spending their collective energies

Uche, your comments are well taken, and I concur. However, I am sitting here with my wonderful jazz in one room and Galway downstairs with the lovely fragrance burning in my fragrance pots all over my home which gives me a space to be relaxed and calm as I share with my family on our site. One thing that I am sure of is that President Barack Obama will pull all of this off on a stage that he produced, directed, and paid for with the use of his brilliant mind long before the people even came to the table. We all remember that he thinks in the long term. Remember Michelle telling us “here’s the thing about my husband: even in the toughest moments, when it seems like all is lost, Barack Obama never loses sight of the end goal. He never lets himself get distracted by the chatter and the noise, even if it comes from some of his best supporters. He just keeps moving forward. And in those moments when we’re all sweating it, when we are worried that the bill won’t pass or the negotiations will fall through, Barack always reminds me that we are playing a long game here. He reminds me that change is slow-it doesn’t happen overnight. If we keep showing up, if we keep fighting the good fight and doing what we know is right, then eventually we will get there. We always have.” Michelle Obama.

As you said, “We have someone in the WH who is focused on that north star and not on the day-to=day changes that the simple minded and ignoorant in the media and the GOP are spending their collective energies.”
My mind is cool, collective, my home is glowing with good light, and my ears are hearing some of the best of Miles Davis”Kind of Blue” and James Galway’s Meditations. We are going to be fine. But you have to let the light spirits come into our spaces , if we choose to and relax with each other in conversastions. That is what a well read, intelligent, calm, yes, tired of the mess being thrown at our President, but we are fine. Love you all back.

HZ…great response. Jazz is my relaxation musical form as well….I can just imagine you in that mood – with candles and all.
And paraphrasing our wonderful First laday again…”the only thing that happens instantanously is destruction; it takes time to build/rebiuld..”
This struggle is a combined effort…we will trust the President to always have our interest at heart and we will reciprocate by having his back at all times. While he does the unenviable and heavy lifting,we will keep ourselves informed – and also informing the uninformed; we will keep knocking on doors, making calls, registering voters. If we do all that,we will be whistling our way back to another blowout Presidential victory in 2012 – and taking back the house doing it.

Uche, yes jazz is a form that takes you to so many places. It is wonderful, Uche, with the light of the candles glowing all over the house and the music. It sets my mind in a state that I find comfort within my space when we are standing with President Obama. I feel, like you that we must be ready to have his back while he is doing the heavy lifting. The candles(for those who like them) and the music calms me within my space. I am able to really get down to the thought process as to how I can help our President in my small way. Uche, it will be a beautiful choir of whistlers marching up to the WH gate Jan. 2013, with all we need in the house including our Speaker of the House. I am purchasing more candles next week. Have a great Sunday, Uche.
