I never get tired of this video. After a particularly frustrating primary debate in which Hillary Clinton accused him of everything under the sun, he looked calm, didn’t sweat the small stuff and came off fresh as a daisy. When he “brushed his shoulders off,” and everyone immediately understood what he was doing, it was freakin awesome! Some gestures are just fundamentally universal.

I would love to see him come out of Sunday’s meeting doing that lol We would know for sure that he’s an avid TOD reader ๐Ÿ™‚ He was probably thinking in that photo above…”This is for my peeps at TOD and TOAITR – I got this! Check my away” ๐Ÿ˜€

I tell you, our beloved President Obama, Is oh sooooooooooooooo special, cool, calm, and all the other positive adjectives, that describes who this Man Is. Yet, I know he’s not perfect, but he’s loaded with all kinds of gifts, brilliance, passion, handsome, lean and trim, great Leader/President, good Husband, IMO, and a great Father. Our Lord and Savior has got to be showering him with all these blessings. I believe, again and again, that *He’s got this* because he knows that our Lord and Master, Is buttering his bread. We need to jump on board with him, because President Obama, Is ONLY one of a kind. There Is no other. We need to thank our Lord for choosing this man to serve our Country, to God be the Glory ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, just wanted to say that.

Dapper and oh, so smart. We won’t have one like this in a long time to come. He continues to inspire me. So many people could learn so much from this gentle soul.

Every time I think about his mom and regret why she couldn’t be here to see her son, I snap back and imagine her just looking down on her son with so much pride. She has got his back, as well as all the old souls of Africa past.

He is the man for this time and this day. He will finish what he came to this presidency to do. I believe it with every fiber in my body.

        • July 9, 2011 at 4:41 pm

Positivity is so important. Even before I went to school to become a social worker, I learned how important it was to function. When my husband, a robust workaholic suddenly became ill and disabled, it turned my and my son’s world upside down. Once a worrywart and prone to impatience, I began to read and just teach myself about positive affirmations and relaxation. I am glad you are keeping it in the positive. It will carry you a long way. Take it from me. It’s best to elimintate those environments that are toxic. Take good care of yourself, mind, body and soul.

          Wishing you the very best.

luci, I enjoyed your post the other day on Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Got up this morning to a sermon on the book of Daniel, and telling of these three captives. Very inspiring in that what was meant for evil, the Lord protected them. Such is that with our President Obama………what he does for the good of us all is met with scorn and malevolence. These three men came out of the fire, unscathed, for their trust and faith in their Lord was so strong that King Nebuchadnezzar had to free and promote them. In so much as this nation on a whole will not redeem itself of it’s hatred, those of us who believe in the will of God, and the promise he has made if we are faithful and loving, shall reap the rewards. And if PBO remains steadfast in his endeavors to succeed in growing this nation, he too shall be blessed, as he has been already. There is a deeper reason, I believe, for his position at this time. I also think that we are being tested for the graciousness which He has bestowed upon us inspite of the unreasonableness of so many in the body politic. We need to constantly remind ourselves of the higher power at work…….it is not just about PBO as he so often stated…..it is about us. I further this by saying it is not just about us……it is about God. May we keep in prayer, at the same time we kick ass….whoops ๐Ÿ˜€

I have been trying to find some feedback on the Democratic Steering Committee hearings last Thursday on the impact of a default on the economy and job creation. I was particularly interested in the testimony of Bruce Bartlett who worked in the Reagan administration and has been sounding the alarm about the looming debt limit crisis for over a year. The most detailed information I could find was by constitutional law and first amendment Professor Jack Balkin of Yale. This post is very informative and absolutely riveting. It contains a pdf of Bruce Bartlett’s testimony.

    Friday, July 08, 2011

People think the current threat of default concerns whether Social Security checks will be mailed a week late, and whether the Washington Monument will be closed for a couple weeks. They are wrong.

Today we are facing more than a fiscal crisis. We are facing a long-term national security crisis.

American government debt has long been viewed as rock solid and essentially risk free. That is why foreign investors, especially in China, have been willing to allow us to spend freely. If they come to believe that we are incapable of paying our debts because our government is not run by adults, they will not be willing to fund our huge investments in national defense– including the three wars we are currently fighting, our investments in weaponry, and our anti-terrorism programs– at their current low interest rates.

We rely on foreign governments and foreign investors to finance our national defense. That is why we have been able to maintain an enormous defense budget at a far lower interest cost than other countries would face. But once American debt is seen as risky, foreign investors will find American debt to be a much less secure proposition, and they will demand higher interest rates in compensation. That will increase the costs of defending the country significantly in the short run, and the increase in interest rates may remain for years to come. That is the long-term problem created by the short-term crisis.

There are two important discussions in the debt ceiling debate today. One is Larry Tribe’s New York Times op-ed, which calmly reiterates (1) that Congress, not the President is entrusted with the power to issue debt, (2) that in and of itself the debt ceiling by itself is not unconstitutional under section 4, and (3) that the President’s power is at its lowest ebb because Congress has specifically refused to raise the debt ceiling. On these three points, he and I agree.

    Friday July 08, 2011

In response to Larry Tribe’s op-ed today, Treasury General Counsel George Madison, speaking on behalf of Secretary Geithner, made two important points, both of which are correct, and only one of which seems to be understood by the press:

The first point is that “Secretary Geithner has never argued that the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution allows the President to disregard the statutory debt limit. As Professor Tribe notes, the Constitution explicitly places the borrowing authority with Congress, not the President.” This is correct. The President may borrow money on the credit of the United States only with Congress’s authorization. In a previous post I noted that in the most dire emergency this authorization might even come after the President acts, as it has in the case of military emergencies, but an authorization is still required.

The second point is that “The Secretary has cited the 14th Amendmentโ€™s command that โ€œ[t]he validity of the public debt of the United Statesโ€ฆ shall not be questionedโ€ in support of his strong conviction that Congress has an obligation to ensure we are able to honor the obligations of the United States. Like every previous Secretary of the Treasury who has confronted the question, Secretary Geithner has always viewed the debt limit as a binding legal constraint that can only be raised by Congress.” (emphasis supplied).

This is what the press is missing. Secretary Geithner is saying that Congress is not living up to its constitutional obligations.

Let me put it differently: The current strategy of congressional leaders in the Republican Party violates the Constitution because they are threatening to take us over a cliff in order to push their radical policy agenda. Threatening to undermine the validity of the federal debt in order to gain political points is precisely what section 4 was designed to prevent. Secretary Geithner does not believe that the President is allowed to violate the Constitution himself to stop congressional Republicans, but it does not follow that what the Republicans are doing is constitutional.

The press so far has been asking whether the debt ceiling is constitutional. The correct question the should ask is whether the Republican strategy of hostage taking violates the Constitution. It does.

    • July 9, 2011 at 2:45 pm

When has the press ever asked the right questions when it comes to policy and the constitution?

I am not putting us down because you are all very intelligent and creative TOD ers’ He always seems to pull something that leaves us wondering why “we didn’t think of that.” The note on Camp David is a good one and could be possible.

Even though there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States. You should care about the country and tell the truth, so people can be informed to make the right decision. I never seen more blatant distortion of the news because of greed. This is what our corporate media, have come to. How low we have fallen. You fail us on the wars and for that, we will always be digging out of that mess without an end. Terrorism is here to stay because of Lies Bush told and the Media went along. Stop carrying the Republican water to destroy this economy just to gain the White House, if not, we will always be digging out of this mess without an end just like the wars. For not been truthful with the American people you help brought terrorism and many dead and maim American bodies here. and your untruthfulness will help bring depression to our border. For what reason other then selfish greed.

Update redarding Ohio’s SB5 Union busting bill.

As it stands right now because Ohio being the only state having a referendum option to overturn the union busting legislation past by the governor, all eyes will be on Ohio on the run-up to 11/08/2011.

We met today to start working on a strategy for our get out to vote campaign, becasue getting the 1.3 million signature was the easy part, the challenging part will be getting the voters out to the polls.

Karl Rove has already announced that his group will be pouring millions into the state on ads and boots on the ground to combat our efforts. As a matter of fact to get their voters to the polls they’re right now gathering signatures to put a referendum on the ballot to stop the “ObamaCare” or properly termed “Affordable Care Act”, from being enacted in the state.

Being that Wisconsin and New Jersey Governors were successful, Ohio now becomes the fire wall, but where as it was the politicians in these states that decided the fate of the workers, in Ohio it will be the voters who will have the last word.

Because we gathered over 1.3 million signatures our slogan for the campaign is “I’m One In A Million”!

So Governor KaSick may have his Koch brothers millions and Karl Rove super Pacs, but I’m One In A Million”!

I was listening to Randi Rhodes yesterday and she made a statement that made me instantly think about you.
She was saying when advertisers scouts for websites to advertise on they take quick notice of sites that have hit over million visitors, she went on to say that’s one reason why she likes to tell everyone to visit her web site.

This started me to thinking about your site which is well over 2 million approaching 3 mill….so have the junk peddlers come a knockin yet?

    I must not fear.
    Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
    I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
    Only I will remain.

President Obama whistling is a “Code Message” for “People I’ve got this handled.” We need to remember this in case he does it again in the future. Let’s keep this info to ourselves. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

Darn, there I go again. I am Barb. I have enjoyed reading all of the discussion today on TOD and thank you Chips for providing this haven for us. . Such a good feeling to know that others think alike about our President. I always pray for him for wisdom, perserverence and protection. I also pray for “Justice” for those who try to prevail against him. The kind of justice that Murdoch is receiving lately.

Way out in left field question, but why is he wearing a jacket? Isn’t it steamy hot in DC this time of year?

LOL! He’s hiding the huge plate of lemon creme pies he snuck from the WH fridge/pantry. Michelle has forbade him from eating pie on weekends.

Actually, I believe the REAL reason is that his little blue short-sleeved shirt is in the wash. Remember he wore it last weekend? He has no choice but to wear this jacket.

He also has a wry sense of humor.

PBO to the owner: I understand you are a staunch Republican.

Owner: Why, yes, sir. I am.

              PBO: How’s business? …..

Can’t you just imagine the slightest of smiles on his face when he said that? That very slight sparkle in his eye…

He always makes people think. It’s almost he’s saying “THINK, DAMMIT!! THINK FOR YOURSELF!!!”

With all the “Heat” that is going on in DC, maybe it is bullet proof. It’s been mentioned that there is a new bullet proof light weight material that can be worn.without recognition. Lord forbid, but it comes to mind..

Didn’t someone mention that he was going to Camp David again? Maybe the jacket is for flying in the helicopter?

I would love to ask Reggie,”What is it about the President’s look with that whistle.” Do you think we could get an answer from Reggie. However, I love to see him calm, thinking, and enjoying the beauty of the grounds of the house where we carries out the business of the people. Also remember, he once said that he likes Camp David’s setting where he can take in nature and take long walks. I think when he is weighing something very heavy, he likes the quietness, calmness, and just do what he has to get done. I am glad that he enjoys God’s nature and enjoys thinking among the beauty of Camp David. Remember in the recent book about his mother, she often liked to go to different places when she wanted to be among certain people and things during her studies. We will be eager to read his many books after he leaves office in 2017, and what decisions were made at Camp David and why that setting. I love my President.

Chips…you need to post a thread on the breaking news that John Boener is backing away from the deficit ceiling deal.

His action does not surprise me one bit – I actually expected it once the President announced he was going big on the deal…ie willing to consider cuts/tax savings of $4 trillion rather than $2trillion.
This was a well-played political move to box in Boener and his cronies and expose their true intentions to those who still can’t understand the level of treachery and cynicism from these so-called leaders of the GOP. Some of us were pulling out their hairs when he announced a couple of days ago he wanted to tackle this deficit problem more robustly….all the agitation about SS/medicare/medicaid cuts, which was mostly unfounded. This is rich, coming from these same people who have been blathering about the need to solve our deficit problems asap.
Once again GOP leadership has brought their amateurish checkers skills to a professional chess game…I’m just waiting for the checkmate move by President Obama.

On a different topic….I read all the hand-wringing and dejection on the threads yesterday following the release of jobs #s and unemployment stats with a little amusement. That we had a small blip on the mostly positive trajectory of this economic recovery, did not call for us all to go on prozac. All the micro-economic indices point to a continued improvement on the jobs front. So TOD family, just relax – the world is not ending. We have someone in the WH who is focused on that north star and not on the day-to-day changes that the simple-minded and ignorant in the media and the GOP are spending their collective energies on.

Thank you for this blog and all of the comments. It does my heart well to see that the President’s actions are being judged through the correct lens. He is working everyday to put this country back on solid footing with an economy based in real, tangible US products, not the financial shadows that drove us down into a near depression. Manufacturing is picking up for the first time in 30 years, trade deficits are shrinking, wars are ending. These are all really good things. Our economic recovery was doing just fine until the Republicans took over the house and started interjecting all of this “Uncertainty”. We need to shut them up and send them home in the next few elections. In order for America to be strong, she needs those who will defend her and lift her up above all else. Not party, not region, not income level. America belongs to all of us, and we need her strong and growing for any of us to have a future.
