halperin (updated again)

He’s apologizing for letting slip his contempt and disrespect for the President? Right.

Steve Benen: …. If you can watch the video, note how Halperin, ostensibly one of the nation’s most influential pundits, was smiling, with a smug satisfaction. It wasn’t a word he just blurted out in the heat of a larger discussion – Halperin thought about it….

….There are a couple of angles to keep in mind here. The first is that Halperin’s credibility as an objective observer of political events has long been dubious, at best, but this morning’s little stunt should remove all doubt. In candor, I don’t much care that Halperin sides with the right over the left, and takes cheap shots at Democrats. I care that Halperin is presented to the public as a neutral, even-handed expert, when that’s plainly not the case. To this extent, the “dick” comment only helps bring an end to a thin pretense.

…  If the president stays cool, he’s an emotionless Mr. Spock. If the president shows some fire in the belly, he’s “a dick.”

What passes for mainstream political punditry in 2011 is too often a national embarrassment.

NYT: MSNBC suspended one of its best-known political analysts, Mark Halperin, on Thursday morning after he directed a slur at President Obama on the channel’s morning show, “Morning Joe.”

….Immediately after the show concluded at 9 a.m., a meeting was convened about the incident, and by 10:30 a.m., Mr. Halperin had been suspended indefinitely from his analyst job at MSNBC.

“Mark Halperin’s comments this morning were completely inappropriate and unacceptable,” the channel said in a statement. “We apologize to the President, The White House and all of our viewers. We strive for a high level of discourse and comments like these have no place on our air.”

In a fresh statement from the channel, Mr. Halperin said he agreed completely “with everything in MSNBC’s statement about my remark” and added, “I believe that the step they are taking in response is totally appropriate.” He said he deeply regretted using the slur.

Mr. Halperin, who is also an editor-at-large for Time magazine, is a paid contributor to MSNBC and a regular guest on “Morning Joe.” Time did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Steve Benen: … The key takeaway, at least for me, is what prompted Halperin’s shot in the first place.

….Yesterday, President Obama held a press conference to urge GOP leaders to accept a compromise — he and other Democrats will accept massive cuts, but the president wants Republicans to agree to some concessions as part of a bipartisan agreement.

I couldn’t care less which four-letter word Halperin uses. I do care that Halperin is presented to news consumers as a neutral observer when he clearly is not. But I really care that he and others in the media establishment look at the debt-ceiling fight and think Obama’s the one who’s a big jerk. And why do they think that? Because the president offered some relatively mild criticism of truly insane tactics.

Let me say this as plainly as I know how: Republicans are threatening to deliberately cause a global recession. The president is willing to strike a deal that leans heavily in the GOP’s direction, and Republicans are refusing. Who, in this scenario, is being dickish?

Halperin’s choice of words pales in comparison to the fact that he’s offended by the president’s mild rebuke of political recklessness the likes of which American hasn’t seen in generations….

Halperin needs to go. Once and for all. Outrageous.

    • June 30, 2011 at 6:58 am

I heard it with my own ears. I am livid. This is the last straw. He needs to go. Joe and Mika need to go. Harold Ford just sat there like a bump on a log and let them laugh and insult the President. We must boycott Starbucks which sponsors the show. And I’m sorry, I never want to see anyone lose a job, but Halperin has gone over the ine.

The President cleaned their clocks yesterday and this is how they respond with hate and ugly. And they were playing Stewart’s clip mocking the Pres news conference. Stewart needs some serious push back too.

      It’s on Twitter team.

I have an early appt and will be back mid-morning. Will check in then.

We should not be surprised at the level of hatred and disrepect leveled at this President….at his press conference…he called out those who do the bidding of the wealthy….he said that it is time for those people to pay their fair share…this is a direct shot at the republicans…wall street…etc…

many economic experts say that you need a balanced approach to defcit reduction….

the repubs and people like Halpern are trying to distort the message and divert attention away from the issue…that the repubs have been obstructionists from the beginning….

so they use…racism….lies….distortions….to mislead…that is why this blog is so important….to debunk….

keep your head to the sky….keep pointing out the lies and distortions….

          Harold Ford is an idiot…

Another one of those envious assholes who actually thought they were something fast tracking to someplace courtesy of the clintons, that is until Barack Obama showed up and cleaned all their clocks…

They are all so filled with envy, jealousy and rage…

But they will all lose again and again…

President Obama just keeps moving full steam ahead, logging great achievements and it is driving them all insane; I fullyexpect that in the next several months one of two of them are going to lose it and actually call the President the n-word on television…

Dick is just the universal generic code for the N-word today…

Halperin is crazy mad and losing it because his dream candidate who was supposed to be their white version of and therefore the preferred candidate for both Democrats and Republicans against President Obama, has fizzled and burned out right out the gate…

I just made another donation to President Obama…

May God continue to bless, protect, guide, guard and defend our magnificent President – If God is for him, who can be against him…

          • June 30, 2011 at 8:57 am

We need to get Harold Ford’s information too. If anyone can locate his information, please post it, too. Everyone who participated in their little hate fest this morning should be called out. He is an opportunist and needs to be called on this just as every bit. Mika, also needs to be schooled. If a woman was referred to in that manner, she would not have laughed. We have to push back on these people with everything we’ve got.

Mark Halperin has gone too far. Enough is enough.

They (disappointed Hillary supporters) need to get over it, already. Really. President Obama has been President for 2.5 years, and Hillary has been Sec. Of State for 2.5 years. They’ve moved on, and they were the ones in the middle of the whole thing. It’s so childish!

            Thank heavens for President Obama!

Harold Ford is jealous and envious and bitter…he has been bitter since he lost his seat…he’s angry because he thought he was the “darling” of the party. Harold and his father had high hopes for him…the way things went down, I don’t think he will ever be in politics again. His move to NY was not received well…Harold is done and the only thing he will be able to do, is what he is doing now; saying a few words on msnbc…obviously his paycheck depends on him agreeing wiht the likes of Mark Halperin. I didn’t like Harold in ’08 and really don’t like him now!

        • June 30, 2011 at 9:15 am

The apology is only because he got caught. I tell you there is something about this President that drives lots of people to completely lose themselves. I have said it many times before, that it was not just people in the opposition, but lots of people in the media. We could literally write a book on the multiple abuses and disrespect this president has gotten from people, many of them who should be above this kind of ugliness.

None of them that participated in that panel this morning should be exonerated. They should each be called out. We should make sure that each one of them hears from us. Mika would have been the first one screaming bloody murder if a woman was being referred to as that. I am so sick and tired of the double standard with which this president is afforded. We should not rest until something is done about this.

            June 30, 2011 at 11:35 am

It is because he is his own person, completely and solidly sure of who is and his principles. They can find no chinks in his “armor” to exploit.
And they can not use their usual tools of power, wealth and prestige to manipulate or sway him. And sadly for America, part of this is attributable to the fact he is not a member of the Rich White Male Supremecy Club. I truly believe it is why they are literally losing their minds. I hope President Obama drives them all over the ledge.

Morning Joe is a reflective clique of the rich, white, arrogant among Americans. I absolutely can’t watch it. It is abusive, and I mean that literally. Mika brings her own brand of shame to American women, what a moll that chick is.

Register complaints in everyway and format that you can, but also consider calling out Starbucks, and boycotting Starbucks products.

This shit is ridiculous. The fact that he felt comfortable enough to even think about doing this shit is unbelievable. What the fuck has this country come to? And seriously, personally attacking this president? No matter what anyone things of his policies, everybody likes him personally so the fact that this tool said it to the Jokers viewers is not cool, that’s why he apologized so quickly. People may not like his politics but people really like him as an individual. Maybe that tool should have thought about that instead of trying to act cool. Motherf****r.

    • June 30, 2011 at 9:20 am

Exactly. We cannot and must not let this stand. This President works harder than anyone of those folks in that room, doing his job tirelessly, and precisely because he’s hit a nerve, they go at him as they usually do, to insult and disrespect. They have nothing else, because they know he was right on the money yesterday, calling out Congress for what they are.

If we have to jam those phone lines, email, tweet daily, that is what we must do until not only Halperin, but Joe Scarborough and the rest of his crew apologizes to this president formally. They may not mean it, but they must be made to do it.

Hey guys, I think we should do a massive push back here about this disrespect. however, we also need to enlist additional reinforcements to push back.

One way to do this is to txt or email Color of Change and Urban Radio programs that are live on air right now and believe me they will help us take care of this.

One contact I have is to text Tom at 646464 to Tom Joyner’s Morning Show which has over 8 million listners (most of whom are African Americans). Tom has the largest black audience and he is a very unaplogetic supporter of President Obama.

Tom is live now and was just praising President Obama’s Press Conference and they read and respond to ALL text messages. Believe me, if they hear from us about this, they will be on top of it and Morning Joe will feel the heat and probably get some curse words from people who are extremely tired of the disrespect that is dished out to President Obama.

Please send a text to 646464 and ask Tom for help from his audience.

if any one has other contacts for Urban Radio programs, please share them

SMDH. Halperin is a hack who has been barely containing his contempt for the President for the last three years. He’s been virtually BEGGING for someone, anyone to “take it to” PBO. That’s why he loved the insane/stupid Palin so much. That’s why every inept move by McCain during the ’08 election was still, unbelievably, “good news for McCain.”

The President of the United States, to coin a famous phrase, told the truth yesterday, and they thought it was hell. They are reacting accordingly.

I don’t think it had anything to do with a “technical difficulty.” It seems that the producer who was responsible for the 7 second delay decided not to use it. I’m thinking that some of these producers are fed up with Joke and the tools he has on TV, and one of them decided to let America know how really foul they are. If this was the case, bravo, to the producer because Joke and the others have been hiding their racism and disdain for “the unwashed” behind a veneer of faux respectability for as long as his program has been on the air. IMO, Joke still has the mentality of a schoolyard bully.

Too little, too late. But the truth is this is not an isolated instance….his contempt for the President is only thinly veiled by his very thin skin, and has been ongoing from the get go.

I love the sense of empowerment, and the activism this has ignited in everyone. President Obama can handle this, although absolutely does not deserve this type of treatment.. It has been allowed to go on, and in fact has been escalating for some time. Time for us to say enough. Today the line is being drawn in the sand.
Stay focused on the positive impacts that can come from this, what you focus on expands. An excellent suggestion to put this into the hands of those that have a national megaphone, Tom Joyner, Randi Rhodes, et a;l. And if I might twist asswipe Halperin’s words just a bit, “This is a good thing for President Obama”. Mock his uppity white ass.

The response of Joe amd Mika was just as disgusting. They both thought it was cute and funny.

    • June 30, 2011 at 8:27 am

They can’t help themselves. The President of the United States, who is more man than they can even DREAM of being, totally unravels them. They don’t want the gop smackdown of yesterday to be on everyone’s minds, so they go off the rails PURPOSELY in order to be the news and to distract. This was not a slip-up. It was done on purpose, and comes from deep within.

Halperin knows he will get many pats on the back for this from the right-wing. Even if he is suspended or whatever, mission is accomplished — he has put it out there on the airwaves. Similar to Rush Limbaugh, right after the Inauguration, saying “I hope he fails.” These mofos are deeply disturbed by Barack Obama being President, being such a remarkable President and being so cool about it.

A lot of this is jealousy, envy, and a dark self-assessment: they measure their pitiful lives spent doing whatever they’re doing against their contemporary and they find themselves very wanting. It’s self-hate run amok.

Whatever we are doing is working because you can tell it is working. Mark Halperin just got caught doing what he always does hate on the President. Now he is more sour face because he is on record. He can’t stop reading his blackberry. Dog face bastar. And Jon Stewart got the Pres in a photo caricature of broke bank mounting. You know the gay movie broke back mountain. All of them are a holes. They just mad because their shiggedy is not working. Keep calling them out Mr. President. You got on their nerves.

    • June 30, 2011 at 9:31 am

Spot on. What gets them so angry is that every time they think they’ve got him down, he rises like a Phoenix. This can be very maddening, especially if you mix it with a dose of toxicity. These people can’t stand this president for who he is, what he is and his brilliance. True be told, if he was one of them or in their party, make no mistake, he would be crowned the baby Jesus by now.

But you know in due time, people who couch their ugliness under the guise of doing their job, are ripped of those false masks. This morning, Halperin showed himself truly for what he is.

      • 108 Sue in Minnesota
        June 30, 2011 at 12:21 pm

I am close to crowning him my baby Jesus. He is good for America, and he is good for the world.

  33. June 30, 2011 at 9:00 am

People, please this is not a mistake! It was done ON PURPOSE. Not in a conspiracy sort of on purpose, but a calculated effort to distract on purpose. Halperin couldn’t help himself, but that doesn’t mean it was a slip-up.

How come ending the tax cuts and subsidies to the poor and middle class are never framed as being “tax hikes”. When the costs are transferred to poor and middle class, they have to pay more, and then they can’t buy more or invest more. It’s the same argument they’re making for the rich, who apparently are supposed to trickle down their largess to the masses even though they haven’t done it in the last ten years! If the rich losing their tax cuts is bad for the economy, even though the evidence shows the opposite, then why aren’t the other tax cuts just as precious, when the evidence clearly shows that tax cuts to the middle class and working poor actually feed directly into the economy?

Someone posted an article last month from the rich saying what they’ve done with their Bush tax cuts these last ten years – buying yachts, saving millions (although they didn’t know exactly how many million they had saved). None of them talked about feeding that money back into the economy. None of them.

That writer for Forbes lays the situation out clearly. He says these laws the president is advocating HAVE to be passed, and wants the president to lay it out clearly for the American public so they understand. He says we need a “tutorial, even if the Forbes 400 don’t like it.” This kind of tax break for the wealthy started creeping in during Reagan, and galloped during GWB’s term. These changes have to be made, and we need to make our support known to the president and to the relevant committees in Congress. Senator Kent Conrad of N.D. is chair of the Senate Budget Committee. I heard him last night, and he has a plan he says he can get 51 Senators to vote for, and will NOT touch medicare or Social Security and will bring savings we need. There are Republicans on the committee too, of course, and we need to contact all of them to let them know we expect this to pass. We also need to pressure our representatives. If they get scared of a vote against them in 2012, they can be influenced.

  43. June 30, 2011 at 9:45 am

      • June 30, 2011 at 10:11 am

My sentiments, exactly, Hope. And lots of others have gotten their hands slapped for saying stuff and have quickly apologized. There are numerous things that have been said about this president disrespectfully and nothing has been done about it. Nothing.

Like Faith said over at BWD, the Republicans would have had Halperin gone within an hour, and in our case, the media won’t do anything about this, the Democrats won’t do anything. It is left with us.

And the shame will be on us if we relax in any way shape or form on this issue. We should be relentless, if it takes us to push back on this daily. I have seen way too much disrespect afforded this president from far too many people with absolutely nothing done.

My dad used to tell us, people will only treat you the way they do if you give them permission. We cannot and must not tolerate this nonesense any more.

My little boy saw this and was not impressed one little bit either. Even if his views differ from those of President Obama he should respect the office of President and the man himself. If I am right in understanding that this comment referred to the presser yesterday, the president was eloquent, strong, fair and honest – in other words truly PRESIDENTIAL! – putting the Great Obstructionist Party in their place and calling out their lies. I sent this to MSNBC (and I’m one of those people who usually ‘doesn’t bother’) and I’m glad I did.
-I found Mark Halperin’s comment this morning about the President to be extremely unprofessional, ignorant, uncouth, and out of line – way out of line. The man is obviously a jerk and in my opinion (and many other people’s opinion) has lost all credibility as a political commentator, ‘apology’ notwithstanding. If that reflects the extremely poor quality I can expect from your show, there are better ways to occupy my time. Obviously, I will not be supporting advertisers who condone such behavior by helping to fund your program.
With better manners than Mark Halperin exhibits…
    Thank you.-

    Statement from MSNBC:

Mark Halperin’s comments this morning were completely inappropriate and unacceptable. We apologize to the President, The White House and all of our viewers. We strive for a high level of discourse and comments like these have no place on our air. Therefore, Mark will be suspended indefinitely from his role as an analyst.

    Statement from Mark Halperin:

I completely agree with everything in MSNBC’s statement about my remark. I believe that the step they are taking in response is totally appropriate. Again, I want to offer a heartfelt and profound apology to the President, to my MSNBC colleagues, and to the viewers. My remark was unacceptable, and I deeply regret it.

I’m happy he got suspended indefintiely. I absolutely agree that Mika and Joe need to be suspended to, b/c Joe encouraged him to say what he thought, and then he tried to walk it back in an “oh I was joking” manner and Mika that masochist, that disgrace to all women, sat there and laughed. I twitter bombed the heck out of them this morning. If Ed was suspended over calling rightwinger Laura Ingraham a slut, then Mika and Joe have got to face harsher punishment. Crying out loud this is a sitting President of the United States. He’s not some busboy and all around doormat that they just kick around. If TIME doesn’t do anything about Halperin, I hope they lose TONS of subscriptions!!!

      • June 30, 2011 at 12:33 pm

I did too, Proud and I copied everyone in my MSNBC e-mail file. I told them that Mika and Joe were just as culpable. I told him that they were the hosts of the show and encouraged him to insult the president. I reminded them about how Markos of gos was banned from appearing on their show when he got into a twitter war with Joe regarding his past life. I told Gaines to hold Mika and Joe any less responsible for what happened this morning, would be sanctioning the abuse of the President and a total disregard for the viewers.

I was sitting here thinking one can only imagine the names they call this president when they think no one is listening.

For many of us, we know where these guys have always stood — always offering up a double standard for this president, always deriding him, using their jobs to cover up what they truly mean in their hearts.

This morning on The Morning Joe show, Mark Halperin called President Obama are rude name (dick). I feel awful just typing it. The hosts just sat and laughed like middle schoolers at a dirty word. As a company who promotes social responsibility, I am asking you to drop this show from your advertising budget. Behavior like this is NOT socially responsible and demeans our public discourse. Thanks, just sent this to Starbucks:
Dear Starbucks, today on a show you sponsor, the President of the United States was called a horrible name. The two moderators of the show just laughed and giggled like school children. In fact, prior to the individual calling the President that disgusting name, they actively encouraged him to tell them what the individual thought. Joe basically told that individual: come on, I’ll catch you. I’m right behind you, after Mark Halperin asked Joe if there was a 7 second delay. I live on a college campus that has a Starbucks. I will actively be encouraging all students to boycott your store as it appears to sponsor anti-Americanism,anti- Patriotism and just plain human indecency. Shame on you Starbucks.

The Starbucks Company has a page called “Corporate Responsibility: Ethical Local Global”. I went on their contact page, chose the the topic ‘Corporate Social Responsibility” and wrote this:

This morning on The Morning Joe show, Mark Halperin called President Obama are rude name (dick). I feel awful just typing it. The hosts just sat and laughed like middle schoolers at a dirty word. As a company who promotes social responsibility, I am asking you to drop this show from your advertising budget. Behavior like this is NOT socially responsible and demeans our public discourse. Mark Halperin is free to disagree with the President but this was disgusting, irrational, juvenile behavior, sanctioned and condoned by Joe Scarborough who represents your brand to the world.

I’m also a Comcast customer and will be calling them too since they now own NBC / MSNBC.

Republicans, true to form, refuse to accept responsibility for their behavior, always projecting it elsewhere, usually unto those they are attempting to diminish. Hold them accountable, it’s time for them to GROW THE FUCK UP!

      June 30, 2011 at 12:55 pm

I know this brings them attention, but the sponsors pay a lot of money for their reputations – especially Starbucks. It’s bad enough that Starbucks sponsors garbage like Morning Joke, but they have to realize that they are now associated with a bunch of racists neanderthals and they need to decide whether they can’t find a more suitable program to sponsor or if that’s what they want to be connected with. The sponsor boycott worked with Beck, and we have to consistently register our displeasure regarding this type of behavior. The only thing these people understand is money – our money and out vote is all we have as weapons against this kind of crass movement. They love the spotlight, but let’s make it a glaring spotlight – the kind they use during interrogations.

I called Starbucks and asked them if this is the kind of association they were hoping for when they decided to sponsor a program that consistently demeans the Office of the President. She said she’d pass my comments on to the marketing department.

Rachel’s diatribe last week convinced me to finally cancel our Comcast, which ironically was at a higher subscription rate so that we could access MSNBC. I called Starbucks advised we have terminated our business with them (huge caffeine addicts in this household…I swear we’ld be rich if we didn’ t consume so much “good” coffee), e-mailed a very long letter of complaint to MSNBC, called and left a message on their comment line as well. Halperin was the reason I severed our ties with Time previously. Still if I get subscription solicitations for Time I mail them back and write not with Halperin at the helm. People magazine gets similiar treatment, only I write No, for one reason and only one, Sarah Palin.

I told MSNBC that their programming is the reason we canceled our cable.

They thought they were going to continue to get away with this crap, I am proud of everyone that has taken a stand, and with an empowered voice said, no more, not this time, and never again….Enough!

Lisa, I left the same message with a young gentleman who was not aware of the incident, had never heard of Morning Joe, nor Mark Halperin which I found unusual. However, Morning Joe is worse than FOX in that they pretend to be unbiased but show nothing but contempt for President Obama., Today, they took it over the line. DWS and other Democrats must be aware of this.

    • June 30, 2011 at 1:32 pm

Make no mistake about it. Morning Joe gets a fresh copy of the Republican talking points daily. What Joe tries to do (but was never able to fool me when I watched) was to try to act like he was in the middle of the road. And so, he would get the talking point of the day out there and gently push his panel to agree with him and when a guest came on, did the same thing. And soon, they were all on the same page.

For one thing, from the beginning, this man never ever thought PBO stood a chance of becoming President. But one thing I noticed during the primaries, he and Pat Buchanan would beat up on Hillary religiously, no matter what she did. They heaped praise (to my delight) on then-Senator Obama.

But that all soon changed when PBO won Iowa. It was at that moment that they turned their ire on PBO. They then saw him as a threat. Shortly after I stopped watching him and have never looked back since. I saw the trick. They were beating up on Hillary thinking she was going to be the Republican Nominee. When they realized that PBO was kicking behind, they switched gears. Ever since then from every thing I have read, Joe and his team have been wishing nothing but failure for this president.

Sadly for them, they are not messing with just an ordinary politician. PBO plays for keeps and he is way above their little games. That sticks in their craw. How come they can box this man into a corner! Why? And when he displays his intellect like he did yesterday, it sends them over the edge. Cue Mark Halperin with his gross insults to the president.

That’s alll they got. Pity them.

      • June 30, 2011 at 1:34 pm

This is from Steve Benen’s latest post: http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal/2011_06/what_matters_and_what_doesnt_a030605.php

“Let me say this as plainly as I know how: Republicans are threatening to deliberately cause a global recession. The president is willing to strike a deal that leans heavily in the GOP’s direction, and Republicans are refusing. Who, in this scenario, is being dickish?

Halperin’s choice of words pales in comparison to the fact that he’s offended by the president’s mild rebuke of political recklessness the likes of which American hasn’t seen in generations.”

How true! When I think about it, what is really astonishing is that Halperin thought PBO was being “a dick” for calling out the Repub’s intransigence on something that affects not only us here in the US, but people all over the world! He should be terminated, not suspended indefinitely! Then go to Fox – they’ll welcome him with open arms!!

Here’s another Salon post worth reading: http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2011/06/30/fire_halperin

But why isn’t Joe being rebuked and reprimanded!?! He just sat there and laughed and asked if the seven second delay was on! He should have immediately castigated Halperin instead of treating it like a bug joke. He should go too!

    • 232 Ladyhawke
      June 30, 2011 at 2:20 pm

The White House Press Corps got their talking points from the GOP again today. The VERY FIRST QUESTION from the AP reporter was about the optics of President Obama doing a fundraiser today after the press conference yesterday. Then another reporter harped on the same issue again.

Press Secretary Jay Carney was cool. He ticked off all of President Obama’s involvement, the numerous meetings, VP Biden, on an on. And he let it be know again that President Obama can walk and chew gum at the same time. As President Obama said yesterday walking and chewing gum at the same time is also something that the congress should be able to do.

So Mitch McConnell gets his arse handed to him yesterday and all he can do is pull a stupid stunt of suddenly asking for a meeting at the same time President Obama has a fundraiser scheduled. He desperately wants to be able to say President Obama is not engaged or not leading. The facts are not on his side.

Mitch is probably mad that the July 4th recess has been cancelled. Way to go Harry.

Mitch is looking for his next talking points. If he were to meet able to meet with PBO today, the first thing he’d do after the meeting would be to go before cameras and lie about what the president said and try to make it appear as if PBO doesn’t have their azzezz boxed into a corner. MCconnell would do better to get that red flag of surrender ready. PBO served them their azzez on a plate yesterday and pulled the cover off of their attempts to sabotage the global recovery for political profit.

White House rejects McConnell invite for Obama to meet GOP

The White House has rejected Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s (Ky.) invitation for President Obama to meet Thursday with Senate Republicans about their position on the debt-ceiling talks.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said McConnell was asking Obama to visit and “hear Republicans restate their maximalist position” in the negotiations to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling.

“We know that position. That’s not a conversation worth having,” Carney said at his daily briefing.

  88. June 30, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Halperin must have been a joke, even to his peers. I posted this also in the farewell thread

I don’t care what Halperin calls Barack Obama. But for the record, President Obama did not really act like a dick yesterday, which is unsurprising, because Mark Halperin is a horrible political analyst who is wrong about everything. (Also for the record, it takes one to know one.)

This is a great excuse for MSNBC to fire Halperin, though! I mean if they won’t fire him for being incompetent at understanding and explaining politics they now have an opportunity to fire him for being disrespectful and vulgar. (Ed Schultz was suspended over as much.)

Being a professional observer of the “horse race” is bad enough, but Halperin doesn’t even understand the horse-race element of politics. He fails at being a hack. He’s too dumb to correctly parrot conventional wisdom. He is pretty sure Sarah Palin and Donald Trump are 2012 front-runners. He thought “suspending his campaign” to fix the economy and not knowing how many houses he has were both huge messaging victories for John McCain. He wrote a book about how to win in 2008 that predicted everything Hillary did, but in his world it all worked. He thought Bush’s political comeback would come any day now throughout the entirety of the years 2006-2008. He can’t interpret polls or see through the spin of GOP consultants who are much smarter than he. If I were revising the Hack list I’d put him above No. 1.

I saw a bumper sticker today that caused smoke to come out of my ears and foul words to come from my mouth, not profanity, but hot, spicy words. The bumper sticker asked, “Have you missed me yet?” It was accompanied by a pic of none other than America’s greatest modern loser of a president–GWB. It was on an SUV from one of the small towns near mine here in Middle GA. These folks live in the past and deny reality every chance they get. GWB messed up big time, but at least he was white, and that is why some of these folks think that he was a better POTUS than PBO. Never mind that PBO was #15 on the 2010 Presidential Scholars List and above St. Ronnie, and GWB was in the bottom 5.

I think it’s interesting and very telling to see where some of Halperin’s defense is coming from——like from Josh Marshall at TPM, who is calling the Halperin slur of the U.S. President a “pseudo-controversy” and saying things like, “THIS gets Halperin suspended?” as if it was nothing. And Andrea Mitchell is really fighting back—–against Obama, that is. Every single segment of her program today was anti-Obama, every guest anti-Obama. And Jon Stewart needs some pushback—–he has gone all anti-Obama, all the time. Who is whispering in his ear? This is so damaging once again in tamping down enthusiasm with young voters. What is his motivation? And I’m glad Halperin is on break, a permanent one I hope, but when I see Joe and Mika looking so delighted with that comment, and that’s what it was, there should be consequences for them also, for their disrespectful, gleeful behavior.

    • 242 Ladyhawke
      June 30, 2011 at 2:45 pm

WHAT MATTERS (and what doesn’t) ABOUT HALPERN:

This has sparked some discussion about whether MSNBC overreacted, whether the comment counts as a “gaffe,” whether “dick” is overly crude for a news broadcast, whether the president deserves a degree of deference, etc.

These strike me as legitimate questions, but I don’t think they’re the most important questions. The key takeaway, at least for me, is what prompted Halperin’s shot in the first place.

Forget the trees; look at the forest: congressional Republicans, for the first time in American history, are holding the debt ceiling hostage. They’ve announced to the country and the world that they’ll cause an economic crash, on purpose, unless Democrats agree to dramatic spending cuts. Yesterday, President Obama held a press conference to urge GOP leaders to accept a compromise — he and other Democrats will accept massive cuts, but the president wants Republicans to agree to some concessions as part of a bipartisan agreement.

Halperin’s choice of words pales in comparison to the fact that he’s offended by the president’s mild rebuke of political recklessness the likes of which American hasn’t seen in generations.

    • June 30, 2011 at 2:54 pm

I have been suspect of Marshall for some time. I noticed that he includes Rasmussen in his poll average even though his readers have called him out on it. Rasmussen is so biased against the Pres, including it makes his numbers go way down. But Marshall does it anyway. Also, he recently has been getting a lot of air time with Matthews. Why because he always tries to give Rs the benefit of the doubt, etc. Thus his column today.

I’m sorry, there is absolutely nothing that can excuse Halperin calling the President of the United States a slur. Nothing. We must not let this go. I will be very disappointed in PBO’s supporters if we wimp out on this.

These racists need to be held accountable.

proudofobama, I fully agree with you that Halperin needs to be terminated for his disrespect of PBO. And I also agree with Josh Marshall, that Halperin should have been terminated for his thinly veiled support of the Repubs while posing as a so-called “neutral” commentator. He has no business commenting on policies and politics – it’s just a platform for him to air his distinctly partisan views. I’m glad he’s gone and I hope it’s permanent. I think this is what Josh was trying to point out by pointing to the Salon article here: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2011/06/wait_this_is_what_brings_halperin_down.php?ref=fpblg – notice the emphasis on “This”.

They’re upset, imo, because PBO didn’t just pull the covers off Congress yesterday but them, too when he said that he knows what the MSM and the republicans say about him. These folks aren’t news reporters. If they were, they’d be reporting information accurately and would have no reason to be upset about what the president said because they would have already reported it. While we give push back to this trash. We should think twice about moving the media conversation off the president’s message, that the Republican leadership wants to sacrifice the middle class to save tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires. If we push Halprin as a media story, Joe and his rethuglican puppet masters can say “mission accomplished.” Don’t be played like a fiddle. Take a page from the White House book. At the gaggle today, the press secretary gave this NO media energy. One question, one answer – I expressed my displeasure to the president of NBC – and done.

But on the interwebs, we need to take them to school. Anybody got a list of advertisers for Morning Joe?

It seems to me that people who disrespect our President like this are too often rewarded with, if nothing else, raising their profile and sometimes even promoted to outlets such “Fix” news with a hefty raise in salary. For sure this was no accident. He is a professional and knew exactly what he was doing. Was almost like he did it on a dare. What a jerk. God Bless President Obama.

I am so sick of these rich guys slamming Our President. This guy Halpern and the 2 nitwits need to go. All three of them. This is really unbelievable. Please tell me this guy does not have kids. This is how he talks on nationall TV?. As clueless as Bush and his administration were, I neven heard anyone call him a d—-. I wonder why? This is unacceptable and I have called MSNBC, I will not read or buy TIMES and I will only pass by Starbucks. I will not look in….Halpern and the 2 nitwits enjoyed every minute of their little childish game. This was like watching junior high school antics. No, I take it back…..Tea Party meeting.

I forgot to add….what about respect for the office of the United States President? His trip in Europe was highly respected everywhere he went.. And noe come home to this? Just because he is calling them out. These rich cowards turn to name calling,….really? When you hit their pockets, the real monster reveals himself. Halpern. join the unemployment line or stay on the other side where you belong. The truth is out now. 4 MORE YEARS! FIRED UP! READY TO GO! Personally, I am going to work even harder to make sure that Our President is re-elected and then Michelle……sO Sarah P. and the other Michelle….. it’s going to be a while.

I don’t want his, or any of the republicans’, apology. I’ve been fed up with their little games for a long while now. What I want and have been praying diligently for is that these tools will be exposed to the American people like they have never been exposed before, and I seems to be happening. These privileged, callous, cold-hearted tools have been doing this kind of stuff for all of my life. As I grew up under segregation, I was told that I couldn’t do this or that, but I proved all of them wrong and retired at an early age to prove it by not having to lift a finger to look for another job because I can’t pay my bills. PBO is the real deal. He has had to put up with the same kind of mess from these people. They are incapable of understanding him, so they talk mess trying to appear to be superior to him. He knows, and we Obamacrats know, that he is head and shoulders above them in every way. Devoted husband and father? Yep ! Practices his Christianity? Yep! Highly intelligent? Yep! Has compassion for others? Yep! Views others around the world and in the U.S. to be a s valuable as he is? Yep! Handsome with a to-die-for swagger that has no comparison? Yep! I have some breaking news for Halperin, Harold Ford, Joe, Cornel West, and others who have been attacking PBO every chance they get: PBO doesn’t care what you have to say. He’s so secure within his skin that he sets and pursues his own course, and no amount of ankle biting can distract him from it. Psst! that was the key to my success and is the key to his success. He’ll stay the course and leave only his dust behind for you to savor. Get used to it, Dust mites!!

His apology means nothing…they are just words. He says them without any emotions. It was a sad performance by all especially the host who want us to take them seriously. He simply had gotten very comfortable in his surroundings so I’m sure they speak even worse about the President on that set. They have lost their collective cool.

Suspended??? I want his a** fired and his head on a chopping block. Such disrespect, such disgust. These are the type of people you want as leaders? They have no respect for others or their values. Was there this much disrespect for Bush??? I think NOT!!!
PBO was called a “d*ck” because he took control yesterday. He showed them who was boss and they got all their little kid superman panties in a bunch. Grow the hell up and accept that fact that we actually have some one in the White House doing something besides sitting on their a** and starting wars all over the place. F*ck Halperin! He’s a nobody as far as I’m concerned.
