Steve Benen: …. At a White House press conference this morning, the president did a very effective job at putting Republicans in a box. Either policymakers accept a balance approach, Obama argued, or the GOP will be exposed as deficit frauds who care about protecting the rich at the expense of everyone else.
… The White House message is obviously taking shape. Obama and his team want the public to know the administration is committed to debt reduction and tough choices, which will include calling on broad sacrifice, but which will protect key investments in education and health care. Republicans, on the other hand, … will fight to the death to ensure the wealthy don’t have to sacrifice at all.
The phrase of the morning is “corporate-jet owner.” I started keeping count of how many times the president used the phrase, and I think I noticed four separate instances. The point was to highlight a $3 billion perk available to those who buy these jets – a perk Republicans won’t touch because it would count as a (cue scary music) tax increase.
As the process continues, the White House message to the public will be pretty straightforward: we can have a major debt-reduction deal if only Republicans weren’t fighting so hard to protect corporate-jet owners. Why, the argument will go, won’t the GOP look out for students and seniors the way it looks out for the fat cats on the Cessna?

I hope he continues to pound the Tea’s on this issue alongside the DemoWimps!
oh lawd Tweety (Chris Matthews for those who doesn’t know 😉 was on fire in the last segment comparing Barry (yes he called POTUS) Barry and called him Harry Truman and said the President let loose today.MUST WATCH! 😀 😀
Hi Fred. I hope that you are feeling better. Another candle burning this morning for you.
thank you my friend.Didn’t sleep at all last night so hoping I’ll sleep tonight. I hope all is well with you 🙂
Yes, Tweety’s “Let me Finish” segment was great today. He also cited a poll showing that only 1 in 12 people blame President Obama for the current state of economy while the majority blame the Bush administration AND Wall Street. This tells me that the American people are not that stupid – thank goodness.
Posted it below. 😀
was quite impressed with this number and it showed that people are paying attention and placing blame where it should be
My head spin when I watch CM……some days he’s right on the money, doesn’t hold back, attack the GOP/teabaggers……other days I just go, WTH did he just say? is he out of his mind?…..
You never know what to expect with him….
Especially when it comes to the women out there – he’s a wet noodle when it comes to palin and Bachmann. Loses his mind completely and fawns over them, calling them worthy candidates.
As I said the other day, I wonder if Matthews isn’t going through something.
Drug rehab?
Give the man some love

And we can always call our congresscritter and let them know where we stand.
The President has perfect timing as usual. Everyone has heard what the GOP has to say and the deadline is looming. His message is to the point and he sure is speaking for me!
Something PBO touched on today, I would like to see someone like Benen follow-up on if it already has not been done.
I’d like to see POTUS’s work schedule compared to the Congress. Would be good to see how often they are on vacation, while he is working, working all the time.
And one more thing, those Democrats that only come on camera to criticize this president, need to get the (MSNBC woman) treatment. They get on there and flap their gums, we go after them with the facts.
Since they won’t have this president’s back, it is left to us to do this for him. He can’t have the GOP, PL, and people in Congress all ganging up on him when he is trying to do the people’s business.
Fred, what did tweety say?
Here you go.

Thanks for the link Doris, and thanks for the Steve Benen article, Ms Chips! Passing them on now.
Thanks, Doris!!
I had to go out after the presser so didn’t get to weigh in much. I just want to say President Obama is just amazing. He kicked butt over and over. I know Boehner is drunk right now (think I’ll tweet that). PBO’s command of issues and facts is just astounding. No one can match him or ever will.
I loved how he said the Rs are in one week, out the next. Too funny.
And that Cenk, I turned him off after 2 seconds because of course PBO wasn’t mad enough for him. Cenk is getting creamed on Twitter for being an ass.
I turned his crazy butt off too. I just can’t stand the PL.
Can the tide be turning thanks to the ProgBlogs and technology? Are you getting uncomfortable, CenkKosJane, etc, etc? We will, we will squash you!!!!!!!!
Oh the tide is definitely turning because we Obamacrats are fighting back. I’m so happy and proud of our Twitter team. We are taking action against the lies. We’re donating. We got this magnificent president’s back. And the roaches are scurrying. It started with Joan Walsh when the folks at W.E.E. See You got on her for claiming to be the President’s base. Now Rachel’s got a taste and Cenk and the rest are going to feel the wrath of those of us who support President Obama.
We are no longer the silent majority. Hallelujah!
lol @ Cenk, the Reagan ass kisser. I can’t take any of these “reformed progressives” seriously, they’re just closet Republicans.
You’ve spoken the truth nintendowii10. I would advise them that Instead of harassing the President about same-sex marriage, they should “come out” and admit their desire to see this President fail and to have a Republican back in office.
As Deaniac at TPV has pointed out on multiple occasions, at least Rush Limbaugh has the balls to admit that he wants President Obama to fail. Cenk, Maddow, Greenwald, Hamsher, Choi, Olbermann, none of these leftist loudmouths has the balls to admit that they want President Obama to fail.
so happy they are tearing him a new one that Cenk person

Don’t miss the end of tonight’s show. I’m going to explain why I so often criticize the president. I want to hear what you think of my two reasons. 6PM ET on MSNBC.
Why I so often criticize the president??? why I ALWAYS criticize the president is more accurate.
What a tool…I can’t stand him.
Looks like he’s looking for an adience to stay with his sorry show.
“Why I so often criticize the President?”
“Well because I’m a Reagan ass kisser, and I’m masquerading as a reformed progressive to get plenty of money bashing the President.”
Its going to be some bullshit answer like “I want him to be the best he can be” or some variation of holding feet to fire. He can piss off. He does it because it gets ratings and attention and Cenk is an attention whore.
I Cenk is going to explain why he so often criticizes the president, people’s comments must be getting to him! All these people have thin skins and don’t like to take what they dish out. I’m sure his “reasons” will be all rationalizations.
I agree, Carolyn. Very interesting….
I definitely agree…I notice a trend….people are fighting back!!!….if 2010 was important…2012 is crucial!!…..people can’t let those fake progressive or ex Repug or PL whatever they’re called set the agenda AGAIN….enough with the Obama bashing 24/7…
Cenk is a Reagan ass kisser. Dude probably has an altar dedicated to Reagan at his home, yet he’s on MSNBC acting like he speaks for “the left.” He has more in common with the Libertarian platform than with anything progressive.
President Obama is the most progressive pragmatic liberal President we’ve had, yet these leftist loudmouths always bring up FDR and LBJ as examples of liberal Presidents. FDR did more to defend Wall Street than Obama has done, yet these leftist loudmouths fawn over FDR like a god.
These teevee loudmouths don’t speak for President Obama’s “base,” many of them are disappointed Hillary Democrats, and others are closet Republicans like Cenk and Hamsher. If Cenk wants to bash Obama, he can take his bash Obama platform to Fox and take Glenn Beck’s spot. I’m glad I don’t waste time listening to these clowns.
The reason they keep bringing up FDR and LBJ is that they can get away with twisting the records of these two former presidents to suit their agenda, without much pushback, because they are so far back in history, compared to say Clinton or Carter.
I mean seriously… FDR had to pander to the racist Southern Democrats, the Dixiecrats, yet listening to these loudmouths on the left, you’d think that FDR had 100+ Dennis Kucinich’s in his Congress. It’s unimaginable how ignorant these people are of history, they’re almost as bad at history as Michele Bachmann, and THAT’S saying something.
That’s right. The PL NEVER mention the fact that FDR didn’t support anti-Lynching laws because he wanted to court the votes of the Dixiecrats. Well what do you expect from closeted Republicans…they’re just as ignorant as the open Republicans.
we have to fight ALL Obama-haters (foreing and domestic) and those who are falsely criticising President Obama!! many of us have had enough and we cannot remain silent anymore.
Rinse and Repeat and Amen Amen Amen!
as I read the title “putting the gop in a box”, I could not help but think that it also indicates that President Obama therefter shipped the box to some place (e.g. political hell or ass-land since he kicked their butts)
Ship them to Israel since they love it so much.
And if Obama had ‘made news’ about same-sex marriage, Libya, War Powers Act or anything else, THIS messaging would’ve been lost. And it’s relevant to the NUMBER ONE topic on Americans’ minds: the economy.
The press conference today reminded me so much of the arse kicking President Obama gave the House Republicans at their retreat in Baltimore, MD back in January 2010.
some people must be feeling sore after that public political whipping
Linda….that was exactly what came to my mind while listening to that presser. Had to go back and watch a clip of it!. Best title of the day for PBO’s performance was @ BWD…..”ass,meet your kicker!” – that, basically was the summary.
Loved PBO speech this AM! Hes in full kick ass mode now… loving it!
Sorry for the OT- Thhis is just getting out of hand! The political carnival, a site i have really enjoyed in the past, has gone the way of critizing PBO for not saying out right that he supports gay marriage when he should not have to! He has done more for gay rights than any president in history and yet they are all screaming and against him for not saying his own views? Not surprising but frustrating and surprising, even for the political carnival..
Ive always been open about anyone showcasing their beliefs and practicing what they preach. Plus I am always there to help and do my part, but if they try to push what THEY believe onto me then there is a problem and i feel thats exactly what they are doing to PBO when his own beliefs should not matter. He is still doing everything he can to let gays have equal and civil rights.
http://thepoliticalcarnival.net/2011/06/29/president-obama-presides-over-change-doesnt-mandate-it-take-marriage-equality-for-example/
these people seem determined to keep attacking the one person who is constantly thinking about ways to advance their agenda.
a number of groups that voted for President Obama have not got EVERYTHING they wanted but they are not constantly pushing to have POTUS focus EXCLUSIVELY on their issue. they understand that President Obama need to have some kind of balance in the agenda
How is it that everyone else have to sacrifice, but the rich, The very one who could afford to sacrifice alittle more. This makes no sense at all. What is wrong with the Republicans? Everyone else have to give up something they don’t want to, but the Republicans says we don’t have to give up anything, it’s our way or no way. What is wrong with those people?
We all love children. And an adult is allowed to be CHILD-LIKE sometimes in their free time for fun. But we adults are not allowed to be CHILDISH about our responsibility to be productive, contributing members of our society, the common good and our American way of life.
At a basic level the teabaggers and extreme gop deficit “hawks” have a pathetically CHILDISH, self-serving view of the world and their responsibilities. They constantly wail, whine and complain about paying taxes yet expect, no demand:
A massive military 6 times bigger than then next largest military in the world
A massive “fail-safe” (impossible) homeland security system
The best highway system and infrastructure in the world
A great system of public education
A “fail safe” system for food safety
Very generous benefits for our veterans
And MOST OF ALL “Protecting” social security and Medicare (the majority poll that they expect this, regardless of the outlying political schemes to the contrary).
The list goes on. But what spending is “wasteful” and indicative of a government that is too large? ANYTHING that is needed by Americans NOT “LIKE THEM”. And THEY decide who is a “real” American LIKE THEM. I’m sorry, it really is that simple. “Give me everything I WANT, let me do whatever I want and don’t make me pay for anything.” They say they want to “take our country back”. SHUT UP! America belongs to all Americans, NOT JUST TO YOU.
Keep up the pressure Mr. President!
I like this tactic – let’s hope the rest of the democratic party picks it up and keeps hammering it home.
That’s not a ‘box’ the brilliant President Obama stuffed the Republicans into during his presser.
That’s a coffin.
And, he’s about to bury them.
Fortunately, for the sake of 99 % of Americans (even those too stupid to realize how the Koch Brothers, et al., are eating their lunches) who this President is striving truly to enable to reach their fullest potential.
Yes.We.WILL. … DO.More.Together!
