ah bless, maddow defended by ‘fragile, irrational’ fact-ignoring cheerleader

Salon: ‘Maddow feels the wrath of Obama fans(Lovely, teabagger-speak!)

Natasha Lennard (Salon): Following the announcement on Friday of same sex marriage legalization in New York, Rachel Maddow made a comment on her MSNBC show – a comment which invited a backlash Maddow could not have expected …. “Obama is against what just happened” she said … the comment invited a backlash on Twitter from Obama fans, and some of the criticism was heated.

“What u said was that Obama was against what happened in NY which is inherently dishonest. U made like he lobbied against the bill,” read one tweet; “why did you lie?” demanded another; and “@maddow has Hate and Racism towards Obama!” wrote another. The playwright and journalist J. Samuel Cook tweeted, I feel sorry for all the #LGBT Americans whose victory last night in New York is overshadowed by @maddow’s and @ltdanchoi’s hatred of Obama.”

…… Maddow is not the first person to publicly criticize the president and endure the wrath of his defenders. Indeed, as our own Glenn Greenwald sees it: (Obama is evil …. bla bla bla …. Obama is a monster …. bla bla bla ….  Obama forces me to live in luxury in Brazil! …. bla bla bla  …. OMG! I hate Obama! Like SOOOOOOO much!)

Maddow may have been a too strong in her initial comments, but clearly she touched a fragile, irrational nerve in the body of Obama’s diehard supporters.

Thanks Tulips

So, supporters of the President are fans; supporters of his opponents are, well, supporters?

Interesting – if you’re lucky you’ll forget my past rants about GOPolitico’s ‘Click’ page, one of the most vile, scummy corners of cyberspace you’ll ever come across. I emailed them a few times asking why they allow endless racist comments appear under stories about the Obamas, but I never got a reply.

Guess who was a staff writer for Click until a couple of months ago? Yep, Natasha Lennard. (See here)

****

Some of Natasha’s work in recent times:

Matt Damon disappointed in Obama – By Natasha Lennard (Politico) …. Luke Scott: Obama Wasn’t Born Here – By Natasha Lennard (Politico) ….. Obama apparently unaware what year it is – By Natasha Lennard (Salon) …. Obama mistimes his toast to the Queen – By Natasha Lennard (Salon) ….. Does Obama’s trip to the border actually matter? (The president is calling for immigration reform — but there’s reason to treat it as an empty gesture ) – By Natasha Lennard (Salon) …. Does “Dinner with Barack and Joe” break the rules? – By Natasha Lennard (Salon) …. and on and on and on

Crikey, it’s hard to tell her Salon work from her Click efforts.

Ah yes, such impartial reporting.

work-shy

The Hill: House Republicans on Wednesday unveiled a 2011 schedule that will keep lawmakers in the nation’s capital for shorter periods of time, allowing them to travel home more frequently. The schedule represents a major change from how Democrats have run the lower chamber over the last four years.

Under the new calendar, House members will have a cycle of being in session for two weeks in Washington and then spending the following week in their home districts. Incoming House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said the new schedule would create “certainty” for members.

… Intent on winning back their majority, Democrats will be targeting many Republican freshmen in the new Congress. Politically, Republicans believe that allowing members to go home to their districts more will keep them in touch with the needs of constituents and increase their chances of reelection in 2012.

… “In total, it contains 123 days and 32 weeks of session,” Cantor said … Democrats countered Cantor’s announcement by pointing out that the House was in session for 152 days in 2007 and 148 days in 2009.

Thank you Ladyhawke

Does this give the the Republican majority in the House of Representatives even less time to introduce zero jobs bills?

‘a president, not a governor’

Andrew Sullivan: There have been many times over the past two years when I have whacked the Obama administration on their “fierce urgency of whenever” on gay equality …  Here’s what they have done, and it ain’t nothing.

They have removed the ban on openly gay service members … Yes, Obama took his own sweet time …. What matters is: he got it done.

They ended the HIV travel ban …. it was repealed under Bush who admirably signed it into law. But Obama implemented it … Yes, it was a long, long time coming. But what matters is: he got it done.

They withdrew legal support for DOMA … this was in the presidential bound of authority. And Obama did the right thing in the end.

Some now want this president to be Andrew Cuomo … But the truth is that a governor is integral to this issue in a way a president can never be. Civil marriage has always been a state matter in the US. … by defending that norm, the Obama administration has a much stronger and more coherent case in knocking down DOMA than if it had echoed Clinton in declaring that the feds could dictate a national marriage strategy … Obama’s defense of federalism in this instance is not a regressive throw-back; it is a pragmatic strategy.

…Obama does not think of the presidency the way he thinks of a campaign. He knows he is president of all the people, including those who voted against him and those who conscientiously oppose marriage equality. He does not seek to divide as his predecessor did. By staying ever so slightly above on this issue, Obama is doing the right presidential thing – while presiding over what may well be the most seismic period for gay equality in history. I do not despise his restraint in his office. I wish more presidents exhibited it….

Plenty of snark in the article – as usual from Sullivan – but he at least gives credit where it’s due. I’m guessing Choi and Co will now disown him. 😉

constitutional

Think Progress

Steve Benen: In another legal win for the Affordable Care Act, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the Affordable Care Act is constitutional … It is the first federal appellate bench to rule on the constitutionality of the reform law.

It’s worth appreciating the fact that the outcome today was by no means assured. The 6th Circuit is considered one of the nation’s more conservative appellate benches, and one of the judges who upheld the constitutionality of the ACA was Judge Jeffrey Sutton, a nominee of George W. Bush, and a former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Indeed, Sutton, a Federalist Society veteran, has been described as “one of the nation’s leading advocates for conservative states-rights positions.”

Far-right activists hoped, and many assumed, Sutton would be a key ally in overturning the law. He was not. Indeed, he is the first federal judge to consider the legality of the ACA on the merits who “broke ranks” – that is, a conservative judge who sided with the Obama administration’s position.

……It’s hard to see this as anything but a major victory for the law, the administration, and common sense…..

just a reminder….

We’re closing the books on the first fundraising quarter of the 2012 race at midnight tomorrow.

A lot of folks will be interpreting our numbers as a measure of this campaign’s support.

They’re not wrong, but they are wrong about why.

We measure our success not in dollars but in people — in the number of everyday Americans who’ve chosen to give whatever they can afford because they know we’ve got more work to do.

I’m asking you to be one of them. Please donate $5 or more before midnight tonight:

https://donate.barackobama.com/Deadline

Thank you,

Barack

P.S. — Your gift automatically enters you to join the Vice President and me for dinner. We’d love to meet you. Please donate here:
