I love FLOTUS’s Afro-centric wardrobe for this trip. Are there any fancy dinners? I want to see an evening gown.
She looks great!!! And she chose African Designers. Mrs. O Charms Cape Town. Duro Olowu is a Nigerian born designer based in London. A former attorney (or barrister, as he says) Duro gave up practicing law to be a fashion designer. What a fascinating story!!
Oh yeah. LOVE, LOVE, LURVE Archbishop Desmond Tutu!! As I said in an earlier thread, I met him in college. He was a charmer then, and I see, he is just as charming now! I hope I am half as energetic. The fact that he was willing to do push-ups with the kids and Mrs. O.
And again, I ask, can you just imagine any other First Lady doing sit ups? Push ups? You can’t imagine any of ’em. Laura Bush? Barbara? Hillary? Roslyn? Betty Ford? I didn’t think so. 8)
isonprize, what about Jackie O? I mean no disrespect to any of the other First Ladies for what I’m about to say. But when I heard certain people, and you know who I am talking about. When they say, Mrs. Obama is no Jackie O or Laura Bush. The ones making such comments are trying to put Mrs. Obama down. I would respond to these people by saying you are right she is no Jackie O or Laura Bush. She is Michelle Robinson Obama and she is just as “good” as Jackie O or Laura Bush. And in my opinion better. Mrs. Obama can sit and dine with the heads of state, the Queen one day, then sit and talk with kids who comes from the wrong side of the tracks, and make those kids feel like they matter. She can make those kids feel like they are just as important as the Queen. Not to many can do that. The haters can say what they want, but I know we have a wonderful First Lady, who is intelligent, down to earth, friendly, sexy, and beautiful as any other First Lady. And I am so proud of her.
Annie, that’s EXACTLY what I’m talking about!! She is blazing a totally new trail. Just being herself. And I love it. Proud doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about her, about him, about the whole family!! Even Bo. 8)

He truly is just as warm and charming in person as you see on the videos. I have to tell this story:
I met him by chance on a shuttle bus at Dulles a few years back while I was traveling for work. The bus was taking us from our plane out on the tarmac over to the terminal. He was on my flight and I didn’t even know it! He had no big entourage traveling with him, only one assistant. He was just a quiet, unassuming older gentleman standing on the bus. A young African gentleman (I know this because of his dress and his accent when he said hello) and I were the only two blacks in our section of the bus. No one else seemed to know who the Archbishop was, but we both recognized him at the same moment. He smiled the cutest smile when he noticed us both with our eyes widened and mouth agape. He reached for my hand and said ” How are you doing today young lady?” I gushed “I’m very well, Sir. So nice to see you!” “Nice to be seen, dear. Safe travels.” “Thank you, Sir!” I was just beaming!
Then he shook the young guy’s hand, saying hello to him as the bus door opened and he disappeared in the crowd. A lady tapped me on the shoulder and asked, “Is he somebody famous?” I said “Yes, that’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa!” “Oh really, wow” she rolled her eyes. Clearly she had no clue. Oh well, I was on cloud nine that day and couldn’t wait call my family to tell them about my Brush with Greatness. š
What a shame that the woman had no clue – I hope she was inspired and curious enough to look him up when she got home. As for you, what a great encounter!

Afterwards I was annoyed with myself for not saying something more memorable, but I was starstruck. C’est la vie!

Dudette, what you said was perfect and you were responding in the manner that he addressed you. What an honor to be able to experience that moment in time. We never know when we will be in the presence of greatness. I bet he had twinkling eyes. “Young Lady” I just love that comment.
Thanks Barb. It was indeed an honor. I remember feeling like a 5 yr old who recognized Santa Claus in disguise. He did indeed have that twinkle in his eye. You could tell he was tickled by our reaction to him. He just grinned from ear to ear.
