Children from a nearby creche hold placards as they wait for U.S. first lady Michelle Obama before a wreath-laying ceremony at the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Soweto, June 22

A choir sings before U.S. first lady Michelle Obama speaks at Regina Mundi Church and addresses the Young African Women Leaders Forum in a Soweto township

BBC: Introducing the first lady, Mr Mandela’s wife, Graca Michel, spoke of the symbolism of her visit.

“You may have been a toddler when the 1976 uprising took place. Now, in your adulthood, you come to us and you connect that history, and to say the triumphs of yesterday have to be the triumphs of today,” she said.

“Regina Mundi’s name in Latin means queen of the world. And we welcome you as a daughter of African heritage, and we can call you ‘the queen of our world.'”

Reuters: First Lady Michelle Obama urged young Africans to fight for women’s rights and battle the stigma of AIDS, using her husband’s “yes, we can” campaign slogan to motivate youth across the continent.

….her speech to a group of young women and men at Regina Mundi Church, which played a role in South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement, touched on race, discrimination, democracy, and development.

Obama drew on the leaders of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and the civil rights movement in the United States as an example for the younger generation to follow.

“It is because of them that we are able to gather here today…It is because of them that I stand before you as First Lady of the United States of America,” she said to applause. “That is the legacy of the independence generation, the freedom generation. And all of you – the young people of this continent – you are the heirs of that blood, sweat, sacrifice, and love.”

Obama appeared visibly moved when the audience stood and sang an impromptu serenade as she approached the podium. Placing her hands over her heart, she thanked the crowd and seemed to choke back tears.

She spoke passionately about women’s rights, saying the young leaders should ensure that women were no longer “second class citizens” and that girls were educated in schools. “You can be the generation that stands up and says that violence against women in any form, in any place, including the home – especially the home – that isn’t just a women’s rights violation. It’s a human rights violation,” she said.

“You can be the generation that ends HIV/AIDS in our time, the generation that fights not just the disease, but the stigma of the disease, the generation that teaches the world that HIV is fully preventable and treatable, and should never be a source of shame,” she said to applause.

Mrs Obama, who was introduced by Graca Machel, Nelson Mandela’s wife, used her husband’s famous campaign slogan to urge the audience to follow through on the issues she addressed. “If anyone ever tells you that you shouldn’t or you can’t, then I want you to say with one voice – the voice of a generation – you tell them, ‘yes, we can.”

And remember, the only question I want to hear from
my peers today is: what do you think the president should say tonight, and how do you feel about it?
And what do you think he should say?
    And how about you?
    And you?
    And you?

    And you?
    Did I miss anybody?

    Phew!

Isn’t it great that we have 310 million presidents in this country!!!

Haha Jovie. I’m so with you. Listening to Morning Joe this morning every dumb and dumber has dictated to the President what he should say. I’m like uh…. he’s the President you don’t dictate to him b/c he’s not a slave and he’ll speak of his plan about Afghanistan at 8pmET/7pmCT/5pmPT and not a moment sooner. The other disgusting thing is how they’re fawning over Jon Huntsman. He’s on right now and they’re praising him for everything he’s done and Mark Halperin praised him for being the repubs version of Obama. Halperin praised him for being a great orator like PBO, for being the anti-Obama in that Obama apparently ran the most negative ads out of any politician in Presidential campaign history (really??!! Halperin.. really?? you douchebag) and he said Obama is so afraid of Huntsman that he’ll run even more negative ads. Then Huntsman denied again that he didn’t violate the Hatch Act by campaigning before he resigned from his Ambassadorship. He and his wife just stepped off the plane and were greeted at the airport by people they didn’t know who told them they had a fully formed campaign HQ’s for him. Seriously? when I step off a plane and I’m met by people I don’t know; I don’t freaking follow them I get the heck away from them! Then he said he wasn’t going to apologize for being pro-civil unions b/c PBO is also for it. It’s like dude stop comparing yourself to Barack Obama. He is a billion times more the man than you will ever be. Wow Hunstman basically answered three questions and he’s gone. The way MIka, Willi, Joe and Halperin were fawning over him was nauseating. I swear Hunstman could rip Halperin of all his money, piss on him, backstab him, denigrate him and like the masochist e is, Halperin would come back for more. Gosh some company that Huntsman owns or some repub political machine must be paying Halperin some serious cash to be a shill for Huntsman.

      • June 22, 2011 at 8:20 am

That no labels group, that Joe is a member of,endorsed huntsman!
The problem is: the republicans are reading the polls and are designing there platform around what the polls say!
Also, the president is trying to solve problems that take a while, with a press that is very very dishonest and fickle, this means he is vulnerable to attacks!

      • June 22, 2011 at 8:24 am

There is NO equivalent to Obama in the Republican party. Not one person comes close. And sure as heck not Jon Huntsman. OMG these people are desperate.

      • June 22, 2011 at 8:56 am

I can not stand the people over there at Morning Joe, so I do not watch them. I can’t stand Mark Halperin and how do he know that this President is afraid of Huntsman. If this President wasn’t afraid to go up against the Clinton machine, (Hillary and Bill Clinton), how the hell do these people think he is afraid of this boring ass Huntsman guy. I have learn these media pundit idiots make up whatever storyline they want. And their storyline now is we want a white family back in the White House.

This is edp4bho if I don’t show up properly. According to some source, it was said that David Plouffe was afraid of Huntsman, therefore, PBO assigned him that role. This is what was said, but we know nothing for sure.

          • 13 lisalovesobama
            June 22, 2011 at 12:29 pm

I really wish there were a lot less leaks from the WH. No one needs to know what or who Plouffe fears. I hope PBO cracks down like a whip on those tools with loose lips. All these side stories just add to the myth that is ‘John’ Huntsman-Serial Snoozer.

        June 22, 2011 at 9:01 am

Halperin….I wonder if that piece of garbage believes his own lies? Morning Jackass is so distatseful to me, I get uncomfortable just reading about it. Utaustinliberal
you are made of tougher stuff than I if you can watch even 5 minutes of that drek. Halperin will say whatever at the moment is convienent, and yes fawning over each other, or as I call it, blowing smoke up each others butts is what the Morning Joke crew does best. Lots of big egos on that show, all in need of constant massage. End of rant.

Turning toward what to me is meaningful and inspirational…Michelle and group, and the details of their South African journey.

      • June 22, 2011 at 9:01 am

I saw this and I said in the previous thread, I was tweeting away to Morning Joke about their lies and Huntsman’s shady dealings with employees in China (think this is really why he took the ambassador job) and his dealings with Iran. Also called him a liar for that whopper about not knowing the people who formed his campaign. Give me a break. Or try to sell me bridge in NJ. The sleaze ball was plotting while he was in China. Is this the kind of person you’d want to lead this country?

I also read somewhere, gonna have to find a clip, that his family’s company was fined $33 million for violations. I’ll dig that info up.

This guy is trying so hard to be Barack Obama. Talking about civility. This has been PBO’s belief since he entered politics.

And Huntsman is boring as hell. No inspiration at all.

        • 16 lisalovesobama
          June 22, 2011 at 12:33 pm

The only thing Hunstman has at his back is money and a nasty, gossip grubbing press who want the next new thing regardless of how it may destroy the country. I’d bet my last 2 cents that if they could, they’d find a way to make Batshit Bachmann president. They would love it cause they would have a field day and make lots o’ dough too. A-holes 🙄

Morning everyone. Hope we’re all off to a good start. Mrs. Obama just radiates with warmth and beauty. I applaud her for inspiring young people all over the world to make a difference no matter how big or small. Her outfit is tres chic.

Hey Chipsticks and fellow TOD’ers, you guys have to watch the link of last night’s Colbert Report. It is HILARIOUS! In the video, repubs and other msm types are shocked that President Obama beats every republican out there in the polls but apparently against a generic republican he loses. So the rightwingers search for a generic republican has begun. Colbert takes this “generic republican” tagline and RUNS with it. It was BRILLIANT and FUNNY !!!!!!!. So Chips PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE find a way to post this b/c we all need laughs.

LOL: Now that is some funny stuff. Rethugs are desperate for a charismatic leader but who might that be afterall? Trying to remake Huntsman into PBO is a real stretch and they just need to give it up. I so pray that this economy turns around because our work would be lessened greatly, to re-elect our President.

      • June 22, 2011 at 8:34 am

The problem is the beltway media, including the ny times(a liberal rag). Loves them some huntsman.
Bc, he wants to bring all troops home and they love that!
Meanwhile, no mention of him endorsing the Ryan plan. You see, thanks to three weeks of wall to wall coverage of weiner, the press has forgotten all about ryans plan! Ugh!

This is the very same media that will run with “Obama is endangering the progress made in the region and is not listening to the generals on the ground” meme everytime President Obama looks to withdraw troops…

This is the very same media that will negatively spin every single positive and original move made by President Obama and yet will applaud and tout Jon Huntsman when he parrots the President or even marginally reflects the President’s opinions without even having to provide any specifics…

          But they will all fail…

This is going to be the modern day David and Goliath tale where it has become seen and unforseen forces including the media and the establishment against this one man Barack Obama…

Just you watch God take down every single one of these forces…

By November 2012 only this modern day David, Barack Obama will be left standing tall, dignified, stronger, calmer, still President of these United States…

    • 31 lisalovesobama
      June 22, 2011 at 12:44 pm

why do they need to preview anything? shouldn’t they let the leader of the free world talk about this first? I don’t like the preempting thing because by the time they “preview” anything, the MSM will just take it and run with it instead of waiting with bated breath while PBO is talking.

Thank you so much Chip for this website. I love reading all those articles, and your comments and thoughts about it all, whether we are talking about your amazing POTUS/FLOTUS or some other issues and politicians. I am passionate about your political scene and I consider myself an absolute die-hard of your FLOTUS. I simply adore her and even chased her down in London (I was blessed to see her 2 times there, even if she was in her car. I’ll forever remember those moments). Thanks again for doing such a wonderful job, you are so up to date with everything she is doing in SA and you are the quickest to get pictures 😉 You are better than any newspapers As a French girl I must say that I am impressed by the USA ability to really include several nationalities and beliefs in its administration/political scene. Ever since he was elected, I wish I was American lol..sadly my FLOTUS name is Carla Bruni Sarkozy and she does zero. Alas, that’s life 😉

Chips sticks, thanks a lot for the great coverage of The First Lady’s trip to the Motherland!!!

As a person of African descent (1st generation immigrant) , you can imagine that these links, videos and photos and ALL the material you are providing is making my heart overflow with emotion and pride of the First Family and what they represent.

But I am also especially proud and extremely grateful to Americans of ALL backgrounds and races who chose to elect President Obama as POTUS and by implication Mrs Obama as Frist Lady!!!

Yes, thanks to all those voters who valued “the content of then-Senator Obama’s character, talents and promise”. I especially think of all those young volunteers who worked the precints with me and spent nights in sleep bags on the cold floors of the office and knocked on doors even when we had a very cold winter storm. History will record the 2008 vote as one where hope and humanity triumphed with the result that we can now see these images from Africa and all parts of the world the First Family has visited.

What a wonderful gift to wake up to such lovely pics and video of our dear FLOTUS’ activities in SA. If it were not for Chips and the foreign press, we would know little about what is going on. Since I do not want to shadow the glow I am feeling from the recent posts, I will not go into how I feel about the failures of the MSM.
Thanks, Chipsticks for all that you do. Have a lovely day fellow travelers.

It doesn’t surprise me that Morning Joe is promoting Huntsman. I never watch him, so get the reports from all of you. However, Huntsman is the flavor of the week. Remember how they (MS)M promoted Gingrich? Then Pawlenty? Of course, Palin? Then Romney? They always grab on to someone who they think will bring excitement to their programs. They want ratings! Morning Joe’s numbers are low. He makes a lot of noise, but no substance. From what I see, Huntsman is another Governor Quitter. He just looks like he’s substantive. He is what I call an empty suit. Frankly, I think all that stuff about David Plouffe being “afraid” of him is purposeful misdirection. Plouffe doesn’t say anything.

A remarkable set of pictures. I visited the Hector Pietersen museum with my family in December 2011 and I tell ya’ll it is quite a sobering experience. I was in secondary school elsewhere on the African continent in 1976 when the Soweto massacre happened. The news hit us all kids really hard as we saw kids like us being gunned down on newsreel footage. Later we received some exiled South African kids into our school. But nothing beats the experience of visiting the site of the massacre.

I bet Malia and Sasha have had quite a learning experience during this trip.

Greetings everyone. I’m still in West Africa.

In all their excitement about the GOP candidate du jour the pundiots forget the elephant in the room that will push many swing voters, women, and even seniors to vote democratic. Specifically the GOP determination to shred the safety net: changing medicare to premium support (vouchers) which means that most seniors will be out of luck, unable to afford medicare care. Privatize social security; cut Medicaid (which will results in seniors kicked out of long-term care facilities); and ongoing efforts to deny women access to reproductive choices (contraceptives, abortion) and for women with limited resources preventive health care and care for STDs and infections such as bladder infections. Planned Parenthood also treats men for STDs. The GOP zest in attacking unions, public employees, public education will not win them any friends. The party lacks any positive solutions for the country. Most ordinary people realize that the only beneficiaries of the Bush years are the top 1%. As the campaign gets underway these points will be pounded home and all our wonderful OFA organizers will be talking to people in their communities, registering new voters, combatting voter suppression efforts. We take the competence of OFA for granted but just look at all the snafus on Huntsman’s announcement (couldn’t even get their website right, inadequate servers since it crashed, wrong address, misspelled name). And no one has the charisma of our President Obama. Just look at all his community visits over the years and how happy people are to see him. From what I could see of Huntsman’s announcement mostly bored white old men.

I just can’t get over the beaming faces of those beautiful young women and how they will be inspired for the rest of their lives by her visit. Love the photo of the ladies in the choir.

Now let me make this clear…if I was gay, I would proudly state that I was, but I’m not. Now having said that… the FLOTUS has one good-looking backside! I mean, she’s in a country where beautiful backsides are the norm and she’s more than holding her own in that beautiful blue suit! You Go Mrs. Obama!

Oh Chipsticks thank you thank you thank you so much for this video. This speech hit me hard emotionally. First Lady Michelle Obama is a LEADER in her own right who blazes a path for one and all to follow each and everyday. Her speech was a call to action to people of all ages, races, ethnicities, and sex. She shows us everyday why she is called “Barack Obama’s Secret Weapon.” She shows us that apathy of any kind is not welcome and ignorance is certainly not bliss but the death of progress. I echo her sentiments exactly when she said that when we see one child in poverty, he/she may not be our child but that doesn’t me it shouldn’t affect us; when we see one person suffering health problems due to high healthcare costs, we may not know that person personally, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect us. When we see a student denied an education b/c he/she cannot afford the astronomical costs of higher education, we may not know that student personally but that does not mean it doesn’t affect us. Martin Luther King Jr. said “Injustice Anywhere Is A Threat To Justice Everywhere.” Her speech urges everyone to galvanize into action and make a difference no matter how small and I am glad to be part of the TOD family where we do our own part in correcting the lies and falsities that the msm spread about wonderful leaders like the ones we currently have (and hopefully for another term) in the White House.

Okay, just finished watching that amazing speech…THE GOP CAN SEARCH FOR THEIR “GREAT WHITE HOPE” AND HIS OR HER HUSBAND OR WIFE, FROM NOW UNTIL THE CHICKENS COME HOME…THEY WILL NEVER EVER FIND ANYONE TO REPLACE THE WONDERFUL AMAZING DYNAMIC DUO WE HAVE IN THE WHITE HOUSE…PERIOD! They can spit shine and polish Huntsman and anyone else they can dig from underneath whatever and wherever. President Obama and First Lady Obama are amazing!!! (this is Puddin…I don’t know what happened, but I don’t think my name is showing up).

Good Day Chipsticks and our beautiful family. I am just getting to sit and read my most lovely and great haven, our TOD. Oh, thanks, thanks, and more thanks to our wonderful Chipsticks and all of the contributors with such informative articles. Your candle is lit in my home, Chipsticks. We lift you up with our love and good thoughts for ALL that you give to us each day. Our First Lady’s trip is such a beautiful inspiration to all of us here. I close with this when I hear her speech, the photos, and the thought of this beautiful woman who we love as our First Lady. ” There is a soul force in the universe, which, if we permit it, will flow through us and produce.” Think on those world my loving family.
Mohandas K. Gandhi,1869-1948. I love you all so much.

To me, the most thought-provoking comment during Michelle Obama’s marvelous African trip was this one, given in her introduction —

“Regina Mundi’s name in Latin means queen of the world. And we welcome you as a daughter of African heritage, and we can call you ‘the queen of our world.’”

I thought immediately that, in my mind, she is also the queen of ALL our world, remembering vividly the excitement I felt about the world-wide DNA project, publicized in 1988, testing both dark-skinned and Caucasian women of diverse and geographical origins (since DNA is transmitted by the mother). And the facts coming out of the study were — 1) that we are all one race, differing only in outward appearance, and 2) that we trace our Mother back to a black woman in SubSaharan Africa , Hawa, or our Eve.

Quoting a small bit of the study, Eve “was more likely a dark-haired, black skinned woman (who) lived in sub-Saharan Africa.” It is believed that our common ancestor — African Eve — must has lived “between 100,000 and 200,000 years ago”

I haven’t made a thorough study of these findings, but Iintend to. For one thing, Michelle Obama is to me, indeed, “Regina Mundi.” She looks and acts like a queen, too, a “Mother Queen.”

I just made some time to listen to Mrs. Obama’s speech and I can only say that was a very emotional delivery. She was so obviously invested in what she was saying. God bless you, Mrs. Obama, and mulltiply your outreach and (obvious) love for those you are ‘mentoring’. May your words fall on ‘good’ soil.

I am so proud of our 1st Lady, I listened to her speech which brought tears to my eyes. I come from what she called “The Freedom Generation” in South Africa…and while she was speaking the vivid memories of that time in my life once again came to life…This was a powerful speech to the youth of South Africa whom I hope has been inspired by her message and will be motivated by the sacrifices of my generation so that they can live in a free society and I hope that they will protect that freedom and continue to fight for equality and justice for ALL who live in South Africa…AMANDHLA!!!!!!!!!!!!
