“it is time to focus on nation building here at home”

Text of the President’s address here

****

David Ignatius (Washington Post): When President Obama announced his Afghanistan troop “surge” strategy at West Point 18 months ago, he seemed to be keeping the reality of the war at arm’s length, even as he sent more soldiers into battle.

A sign of that ambivalence was the president’s announcement, in ordering 30,000 more troops into the fight, that he would begin pulling them out in July 2011 …. this conditionality was apparently the only way Obama – a president who grew up in the shadow of the Vietnam war – felt comfortable with the decision.

….tonight, Obama announced a measured withdrawal of 10,000 of those surge troops this year – more than military commanders might have wanted but far less than war critics have been demanding. In taking this course, he took ownership of the policy more decisively.

You could argue that, in choosing his own option, Obama fully became commander in chief of this war. He opted for what he thinks has worked: an aggressive counter-terrorism assault on al-Qaeda and its Afghan allies. And he implicitly rejected the more ambitious counter-insurgency goals of some of his commanders, who had hoped that by protecting the Afghan population, the United States could “take away the oxygen” from the Taliban. For all the gains in security in Helmand and Kandahar provinces, that COIN precept hasn’t proven out.

The most persuasive argument for the approach the president embraced tonight is that it will keep enough military pressure on Taliban forces to make them consider the wisdom of a negotiated settlement of the war. That’s the crucial strategic benefit of the president’s approach – that it confounds the Taliban expectation that the United States would be gone by the end of this year. And to that extent, it makes the prospect of a negotiated settlement a little more plausible.

Thanks Jovie

Yep, I’m less emotional. These people get on my nerves. Being here with my TOD family even if I don’t comment, brings me peace. Thanks Sue and guys! 😀

I’m with you — I don’t pay any attention to the MSM anymore. It’s MUCH easier on me emotionally. I feel like we get the truth here. I’m focusing on President Obama and getting good Democrats elected. I like what you said, “being here with my TOD family…brings me peace.” I feel that too.

Thank you to Chipsticks and all the TODers!

Bet his swagga is going to be on 360 tonight!!! Wonder if Michelle and his girls are watching all the way from Africa?

  7. June 22, 2011 at 7:52 pm

Thanks for the reminder. Also, I watched Michelle Obama’s speech in SA, it reminded me of a speech she made on the campaign trail back in 2008, it was a big rally in LA just before Super Tuesday. I found it on youtube. If you haven’t watched Michelle deliver that speech and stomping for her husband then you really really missed something!! Here is the link, you’ d love it!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZiNtTq10i0&feature=relmfu The quality is not great but it’s worth watching but most of all listening to!

      June 22, 2011 at 10:57 pm

I watched the speech too…and I thought about the campaign speech she gave in Indiana…Michelle got to rockin’ side to side and folks were jumping up and down, hollerin’ and shoutin’ “Amen”…it was like church up in that joint…she was awesome. That was around the time MSM and folks started saying Michelle was an angry black woman…and the campaign folks decided she should “tone it down a little…some folks called her passion, anger! If only she could be our president in 2016!!!!

All these silly pundits waiting to “grade” his announcement, what a collossal waste of time and money. I’m also setting some people straight on the Old Orange. I know right?. The way he looked into that camera was serious business. I love when he said “America, it is time for nation building here at home.” That just gave me chills. When he talked about Those clamouring for America to engage in every war or conflict or to not do anything when the potential slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people is imminent; he said we have to find a pragmatic center. Where we don’t rush in to everything but we also don’t turn a blind eye to those crying out for democratic freedom.

You’re probably thinking of Richard Engel – he’s the go-to guy for MSNBC. Even though he was the only real reporter on the ground during the night of the withdrawal from Iraq, he seems to choke on giving credit to President Obama. He used to be a real reporter, but something’s gotten into him, ever since the Arab Spring began.

As PBO walked alone down that red carpet after completing his remarks, i was reminded again how lonely this job is. No matter how many advisors, etc. a President has he is as, Dubya said, the decider. We are fortunate that our decider is also a thoughtful, deliberate, strategic thinker that has an unassailable moral compass.

Jovie that is why the media is losing credibility – and fast. When the viewers hear the President being bashed from different angles, he always emerges looking like the only adult in the room. He stood up for the soldiers, their families and veterans. He has offered them support in so many ways through Executive Orders and initiatives as well as legislation that passed in congress. He always talks about them with the deepest respect, reminding all of us that they are there and what they are going through. Since we have a tech savy POTUS, I get info directly from the WH. If I want a slnt, I’d rather it be theirs. Finally, as far as talking heads, I have a head. I talk. I don’t need them.

Mr. Obama is one hell of a commander in chief, yet the PL seem to want a Republican in charge, which is why they continue to call him a warmonger because he isn’t rushing to withdraw all troops.

  43. June 22, 2011 at 8:28 pm

Let the extremes go crazy. The rational middle will prove them wrong as always. I did not watch PBO. I have to wait for a video to go up.

      • June 22, 2011 at 8:38 pm

That should say something about this president. That he would have all these nutjobs with their own agendas trying to rip him apart. Boehner and his ilk want the presidnet out Afghanistan and Libya, but not out of Iraq. McCain and Graham wants perpetual wars, while candidates like Huntsman and Romney don’t know what they want, but Huntsman is going with what everyone is asking for now, withdrawal. Just like his deision on cap and trade.

The PLs on the otherhand want to go to Libya, stay out of Libya. PBO is the only sane one in the bunch. So, we ignore them all and follow this president’s lead. In the next couple of days, they will move on to the next manufatured crisis.

that girl is not credible. She is little common sense and pure turd. I’ve yet to hear one common sense thing come out of her mouth in regards to the president. If PBO made the announcement that he was gonna go get brainwashed by the PL and accomplish all of their agenda, she would come up with a list of problems and demands. If dressed in drag and marched in an LGBT parade, she would still find a problem with that. I quote Marie Antoinette when I say: “Let her eat cake.”- remove the word cake and replace it with a nice little four letter word that starts with sh and ends with it. 🙄 Who gives flying frack what that tool thinks? 🙄

Is Kooky Kucinich still calling President Obama’s action re: Libya an illegal war crime, and still pushing that pointless lawsuit?

If there’s one thing that the right wing has right, it’s kooky liberals like Kucinich filing frivolous lawsuits like that one, and the one over the olive pit that gave him a toothache. Seriously, what a lunatic, and to think that people defend him even though he’s gotten nothing done but yell and appear on teevee.

Poor Gloria Borgia, she’s all confused. What does that mean? What does that mean? She is just the most confused person on the planet.

Now the Dems are saying they’re disappointed. And, John Boehner is going to make the administration accountable for maintaining the progress that “we” have made.

What’s this “we”, John? You’ve done nothing. The previous administration did nothing. The GOP did nothing. I think we should hold you responsible for having done nothing.

The media (CNN) is trying to confuse the viewers, and people are on to their bullshyte. I notice that Lawrence O’Donnell did not spend a lot of time on post-s speech “analysis.” After Maddow and Frank (who also criticized Boehner’s statement), I guess he realizes it’s a waste of time because most viewers are simply not in the mood to hear these so-called experts. He has now moved on to discuss the GOP’s extraordinarily WEAK field of candidates!!!

      • 137 utaustinliberal
        June 22, 2011 at 9:03 pm

Oh yeah I noticed that about Lawrence. He’s now on to the epic stupidity of palin who sarcastically tweeted about the msm saying that her bus tour was done and was kinda a fail b/c she was supposed to hit historical landmarks in the mid-west but b/c no more attention is being paid to her she packed it up and headed back to Alaska for salmon fishing *pause for laughter*- ok done. But the idiot palin while mocking the media linked to a fox article online that echoed what all msm outlets had also reported. So she basically mocked fox news for mocking her…… hahahahahaha

Now as for CNN I tried watching their analysis but they would say one thing, agree with one person, then 10 seconds later refute what they just said!. It’s like geesh get it straight.

Please POB keep bombarding her with tweets. I’ve been watching her for the past 5 mins and WTF is wrong with this BITCH!!!!!!!!! WTF?? WTF?? I thought she was smart. She is dumb as a doorknob. PBO did campiagn on the fact that he would have to ramp up troops in Afghanistan b/c that’s where the real problem is. Afghanistan is surrounded by Iran who is dealing in nuclear weapons that they could supply the taliban and it is also surrounded by Iran and oh yeah let’s not forget Pakistan who is oftentimes wishy washy about confronting terrorism. She keeps harping about the fact that we won’t be fully out until 2014. Well duh PBO said that in 2010.. was she deaf then? Then she keeps harping on about the fact that it’s only the 30,000 surge troops that he’s pulling out. No Rachel he’s pulling out 33,000 troops.. that’s more than the surge troops. Gosh… I just want to pimp slap the crap out of her. I’m glad they’re giving her hell on twitter. Keep up the goodwork POB.

“After this initial reduction, our troops will continue coming home at a steady pace as Afghan Security forces move into the lead. Our mission will change from combat to support. By 2014, this process of transition will be complete…”

I guess this is just too hard for some to comprehend. While Rachel and the rest focus on 2014, I’m focused on “our mission will change…..from combat to support.”

This will not be picked up by the media. They will not understand that “our mission will change” is next year, not 2014. I will remind them.

She outted herself back in 2009 or so, when she ranted about how Biden should resign in protest, just because he disagreed with President Obama’s Afghanistan strategy… and folks over there were defending her for it.

Yes, alongside PBO’s speech, they put a reply by Huntsman. In disagreement with PBO, naturally, and as exciting as watching a snowflake fall from the sky. Of course, it’s the Halperin Page. What a joke. Obama/Biden 2012, if not forever.

        • 158 theo67
          June 22, 2011 at 10:10 pm

Why is there a reply? This isn’t a State of the Union speech. There’s only one Commander-in-Chief and he alone commands the military. So stupid. President Obama made it clear before he was inaugurated that there is only one President at a time. It’s bad enough that Huntsman is stabbing the Pres in the back, but now to try and impinge on his role as Commander in Chief, as well. Absolutely unforgivable.

I caught this very interesting article from a referenced tweet on BWD, re. the Huntsman Corp.’s revenue in China surging 57% from 2009-2010 during his ambassadorship there. hmmmmmmmmm. Someone was quoted there saying if he was an opposition researcher for any of Huntsman’s rivals, he would have a field day with this info.
        http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-06-15/huntsman-money-made-in-china-challenges-obama-envoy-s-white-house-hopes.html

        • 160 Karen Sr.
          June 22, 2011 at 10:20 pm

And, the 57% surge in income in just 15 months of his ambassadorship comes after his company shipped jobs there over ten years ago. So, in ten years he didn’t see that rise in income, but during a global recession he is suddenly swimming in profits. He was doing his own business there and not America’s. Add to that the fact that he was putting together a PAC and this guy is as disloyal and untrustworthy as they come.

Dangerous too, because he talks in monotones, so people won’t pay attention until the media has built him up so big it’ll be too late.

I read Keith’s interview in RS, and he’s apparently miffed because Obama didn’t throw Bush and Cheney in prison… seriously, that’s Keith’s biggest gripe about Obama, Keith doesn’t seem to be concerned about jobs, the economy, or even our troops, he’s more concerned with prosecuting Bush and Cheney.

If Keith thinks that prosecuting Bush and Cheney is the most important issue, then he can raise the money to do it, because the government doesn’t have the funds to do such a thing. But Keith will just continue to blow hot air and further marginalize himself.

      • June 22, 2011 at 8:53 pm

I do not plan to listen to Msnbc or Cnn or any of the sorry media. I heard what the President had to say, that is enough for me. After all he is the one who talk to the people on the ground, he talk to all sorts of people, the experts who knows things we don’t know. Rachel Maddow, CNN, or any of the other people are not sitting around that table when the President is getting his information, maybe he knows things we or they don’t. It is his job to keep us safe, It’s not Maddow’s job. These people forget, yes we have been in Afghanistan for ten years, but we have only been focusing on that war since 2009. Up until then it was ignore by Bush because of Iraq. America is a people who love to complain about things, we think we know everything, folks like Maddow and the others. But let us get attack again, then the first thing which will come out of these people mouth is we should have stayed and finished the job. Killing Osama bin Laden isn’t the end. It would be so nice if the terrorists were to say because bin Laden is gone we will seek to do America no harm, but that ain’t the case. I’m going to trust this President to do his job. I’m going to pray for the Lord to give him wisdom and strength. Let us all do that.

      anniebella, what you said:

“I’m going to trust this President to do his job. I’m going to pray for the Lord to give him wisdom and strength. Let us all do that.”

Amen to this. After all, President Obama knew the details about Bin Laden when the frustrati was talking about God knows what. He has daily briefings each and every day, meetings, etc, the facts of which we know not, so who are any of us to question his pragmatism? I don’t listen to these buttholes either because time and again, they have been on the wrong side. I still say, they are jealous, jealous, envious, and demoralized by this extraordinary human being, who seems to have the protection of the angels. And they cannot figure him out, because they refuse to accept him as he is.

I heard the speech in the car. I listened to WSJ and a progressive station that the call signs escape me at the moment. Both stations were ranting about the speech. WSJ was complaining that he was giving up on that excellent surge that worked so well in Iraq. The Progressive site was complaining that he has the U.S. in more wars at the same time than any other President to include Yemen and Sudan (how they can accuse those places of being POTUS’s war is beyond me). Unfortunately, I wasn’t in the car long enough to call that station and blast those assholes. In addition to the fact I didn’t catch their names.

All this has told me is that he obviously made the right decision if he has everyone on both sides bitching. What a bunch of assholes.

Lisa, he to me, is the sanest, most intelligent, most compassionate and thoughtful, most prayerful and trusting in the Lord, of anyone in DC, and for that matter, he is unusually THE role model to follow for this country. He certainly has taught me a lot about life, just by how he lives his. Can’t say enough about the uniqueness of President Obama. He constantly amazes me with his strength and determination, and what someone noted earlier, how he can be tough but gentle at the same time, always looking at the better side of every thing and every body. He is a magnificent person, and anyone who doesn’t see this, in my opinion, even if he/she doesn’t care for his processes, is missing some morality, and certainly being dishonest.

Bush on economics and war, clinton on DOMA and DADT. Ugh 🙄 There is no one like this president, nor will there ever be another like him in our lifetimes. The funny thing about life is that we never realize what we have until it’s gone or until we view it in hindsight, and hindsight is gonna serve this president well and the PL will be recorded in the history books as the malcontents and idiots they are. 🙄
ps- you are soooo right, Journalism is so dead, so is fair and balanced. The media is going to hell in a handbasket 🙄

I thought the President did a wonderful job tonight. I guess people did not listen when he was running for President. He was clear on his stance for this war. He said he would persue it; that he would seek to destroy Bid Laden and Al Queda How in the world do they think people would believe we could pull all troops out of Afganastan when we still have some troops in Iraq. I laughed at Rachel (and Barney Frank). Did she think he could give war plans out to everyone? Poor Rachel! I also laughed to see Congressional Dems do their usual dance with the President. I guess they believe we don’t remember that they voted for Bush open-end war.

I think Rachel, as someone said above, goes of rails at times, but she is a good liberal. If we tweet-bomb her, it should be respectful. We should also tweet-bomb her when she does something well, which is often.

I don’t believe in bashing…as my 5 year old godchild says, “we should learn to use our words”, but sometimes Rachel is not nice and someimes she goes off the rail with her rant and raving…I tend to tune people out when they carry on the way she does someimes. It is one thing to not agree with the President or even criticize the President , but Rachel and her PL friends go off the deep end…they are not serving anyone.

I think she does more harm than good. Yes, she does take it to the Repugs often, but she also takes it to PBO an awful lot and the reasons are ALWAYS unfounded. She needs to go back to journalism school and learn how to report accurately. The day she starts being a “good liberal” and stops demoralizing the REAL base is the day I stop bashing her and I have a moderately decent thought about her. In my book, she’s useless.

        June 22, 2011 at 10:08 pm

Exactly. She’s been on some weird rant for a while now. Tonight, after bashing PBO on Afghanistan she moved on to Libya. Complaining that PBO said we wouldn’t be there for more than days. Are you freaking kidding me? PBO said at first we would be the frontmen on the attack and then it would be a limited engagement where we support NATO and other allies and it would take months not days. We would also use other avenues to persuade Gaddaffi to step down. I had to change the channel before I blew my gasket.

She wants to be pressure from the left flank, but mostly she ends up being an ass. At one time I was awed by her smarts, but I began to recognize that she easily lets her emotions and personal agenda’s interfere with her commentary. She lost me with the arrogance she demonstrated in her fake address to the Nation re BP oil spill, and her absolute unobjective coverage of the process to repeal DADT. You know I think she is great for banging on the Republicans and in some cases the media, and to be fair she has given more credit to President Obama than most. But for the most part, I don’t find the demands of the left practical given the make-up of Congress, or the conduct of the Republicans.

          June 22, 2011 at 10:37 pm

she lost me in PBO’s first year when all she complained about was DADT. 🙄 her fake apologies after complaining about PBO and his showing her up has lost its polish. You would think that with all the times she’s had to say “I was wrong” about PBO, she would just shut the hell up and just look, listen and learn, but no, she has to keep opening up her trap to trash PBO. 🙄 Her intelligence is obviously highly overrated 🙄

Think of the messes Bush left hi with! His job has been like having to perform the seven labors of Hercules in a month! He has cleaned up so much, and is cleaning up more all the time. I figure that if the left fringe is mad because he isn’t going out faster, and the right is mad because he’s pulling too many out, he’s got it just about right! These troops can’t be taken out by magic….you can’t just put 10,000 troops on a plane and evacuate….it has to be PLANNED!!! They want him to snap his fingers and make it happen. They need to grow up.

I think the President’s record of keeping his word and success in these efforts should warrant some trust. Rachel doesn’t know anymore than we do. I completely trust the President over anyone’s judgement. I mostly trust his ability to solve or manage whatever comes up. The President relayed strength, confidence, and promise for the future tonight. I can’t say the same for last year when he announced the surged. He seem to be feeling good. I think something will happened sometime in 2012.

What people like Maddow don’t take into consideration are the complex politics within Pakistan, its military splits, India, China; information about the jockeying for power that was uncovered in the trove from OBL’s hideout, the need to keep a presence there for credible negotations. No one thinks about the end game. Some commentators (Zaccharia, Ignatious in the WaPo) are giving a more considered review of the situation. What no one mentions, but I am sure WH and planners have thought about it, is that Afghanistan holds great unmined mineral wealth of rare metals (currently China has the corner on these, like lithium for advanced batteries). It is clearly in our interest to facilitate a stable future for Afganistan. It’s so hard for the professional POTUS bashers to give him any credit for intelligence. (Of course, the media failed to ask any questions of Bush who was notably deficient in that department!)

The point Secy Gates was making on the Sunday talk shows was that while we’ve been in Afghanistan for 10 years, we never had a strategy until 2009 and then we didn’t have our troops in until the summer of 2010. So, we’ve made a lot of progress in under two years.

Of course, that’s not what the media wants to sell. They want to sell 10 years, war fatigue, billions of dollars. That’s all true, but they won’t tell the public the rest of the story. It’s only been two years.

Give me strength, but it I can’t have strength, then please, God, give me patience. I’ll try to remember you created dumb so we could appreciate smart.

Yeah – people are war weary from a war that was ignored for 8 years, but was the only legitimate military action taken in that time. When they talk about the ten year war, they need to tell the whole picture of Bush having accountability for the first wasted eight years, and the loss of life. Plus the 4500 lost lives in Iraq, when he decided his personal agenda was more important than national security.

      • 263 EDP4BHO
        June 22, 2011 at 10:39 pm

And people should forever replay that audio/video of Bush stating “he doesn’t know where Bin Laden is, nor does he spend any time looking for him.” Randi Rhodes is the only media person who will play that tape relentlessly. We need more like her. Even though she likes Kucinich and Weiner—–I have to allow for some craziness from everyone it seems——she will research before she comes on air and insists on being fully informed, and not bash for the sake of bashing. And she allows differing views without malice.

Rachel was in Afghanistan last summer and I liked her reporting. At the time, I liked the idea of someone like her going there to get a personal perspective. However, while I was looking for links to that found, Rachel Maddow Misses Cronkite Moment in Afghanistan from The Nation. Which, I thought, could be the problem with a lot of our media coverage. So those criticizing Rachel, this stood out for me:

Maddow is hardly gung-ho for war, but neither did she voice the sensibility of the 73 percent of Democrats who oppose the Obama war policy and favor a withdrawal timetable. What came across from Maddow is doubt about the effectiveness of the Afghanistan war, not opposition to it…. Maddow instead was ambiguous… For Maddow, Afghanistan is a quandary, not a quagmire.

LBJ said, “That’s it. If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost middle America.” But how do you get to that point if you’re always screaming? Or misrepresenting? Reminds me of a criticism about Citizen Kane and its Victorian Melodramatics, “high-pitched, creating a sort of repressed hysteria”.

And maybe that’s the real point: POTUS doesn’t get a Cronkite moment because he doesn’t need one.

    • 266 theo67
      June 22, 2011 at 10:29 pm

Yeah, Rachel’s coverage of Afghanistan last year disappointed me because it was demoralizing to the troops the way she kept going on about how pointless the war was, and how it was doomed to failure. I didn’t find it objective at all.

        June 22, 2011 at 11:02 pm

I remember back in 2003/4 a blogger going on and on about the president being a “War President”. So that was my #1 criteria selecting a president in 2008, since we were still at war. And tonight, what I hear that president saying, in so many words, is his intention of retiring as “War President”. This does not mean he abandons the military or the continuing tasks that need to be done. But it gives me chills (some here are voicing the same reaction) thinking of this president turning his full energies to other tasks.

This amazes me. Rachel should ask herself why all us non-Rhodes Scholars get this while she does not.

…sorry about the incomplete thought…it makes sense to me to draw down slower rather faster (all at once as some folks are screaming) for many reasons, some I know about and understand and some I don’t…in any regard, I support the President 100%. But, I am wondering what would happen if all the troops came home from both wars at the same time…JOBS, WHERE ARE THE JOBS? I hear the screams, “BRING OUR TROOPS HOMES”, but I haven’t heard a single word about what would happen to them…I mean, we don’t exactly have a good record of taking care of our veterans!

Apart from the Gettysburg Address, perhaps the single most important statement of the meaning of America ever delivered by a President, or anyone else.

    13 min, 17 secs.

    Profound.

Listen to it. Listen again and again and again.

Anyone trying to distract from the essential messages of what President Obama states should be dismissed, instantly.

    Profound.

    Listen to it.

    Share it.

    Converse about it.

    Memorize it.

“Four score and seven years ago ….’

“In all that we do, we must remember that what sets America apart is not solely our power -– it is the principles upon which our union was founded.”
