night everyone

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden hold an economic meeting with senior advisors in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, June 21. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

The First Lady in South Africa – Wednesday:

WH: In the morning, Mrs. Obama is traveling to the Regina Mundi Church in the Soweto township, where she delivers the keynote address to a U.S.-sponsored Young African Women Leaders Forum.

The Regina Mundi Church, where the Forum is taking place, holds particular historical significance for the people of South Africa and the Soweto community. Political gatherings were banned during the anti-apartheid movement, and churches became hubs for activity.

During the Soweto student uprising of June 16, 1976, a number of young people sought cover in the Regina Mundi Church where they were followed by police and fired upon. Students like twelve year-old Hector Pieterson were shot and killed by apartheid government police, galvanizing international pressure on the apartheid regime. The church remains a national symbol of the struggle.

After delivering the keynote, Mrs. Obama is visiting the Hector Pieterson Memorial. The Memorial displays an iconic news photograph of Hector’s body being carried through the streets of Soweto, his distraught sister running along-side him.

The date Hector was killed, June 16th, 1976, has been commemorated as Youth Day in South Africa, and this year June has been declared Youth Month.

In the afternoon, the Young Leaders will participate in breakout sessions to build and foster networks among one another, and discuss the issues that are important to them.

The First Lady will visit several of the breakout sessions, before joining forum participants in a community service project at a local community center.

Friend –

The President and I have a routine – we get lunch together almost every Friday.

But all I get is lunch. You could be one of four supporters to have dinner with him soon.

I’m reminded every week that sitting down for a meal with the President of the United States – without TV cameras or a big crowd – is something only a few people will ever get to do.

You’re not going to want to miss this chance.

I wish you luck,

I like it! I like everyone seeing President Obama as a “baby whisperer”, as a calming influence, as a safe refuge. And haha—CryBaby Boner is all orange!

And here’s another one from the memory banks…

We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.

We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics…they will only grow louder and more dissonant ……….. We’ve been asked to pause for a reality check. We’ve been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.

But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.

Hey isonprize thanks so much for this video. It was on my mind today and voila it’s right here for me to relish and enjoy. This video reminds me of what President Obama always said right from the beginning; there will be cynics and choruses of dissonant voices who want to discourage us but change is never easy. It happens person by person, brick by brick, conversation by conversation and coming together in various avenues until we affect said change. So today is over and the battle continues tomorrow and we’ll be suited up ready to go to the proverbial frontlines for an amazing POTUS, FLOTUS, VPOTUS and SLOTUS.

So nighty night Chipsticks and TOD’ers; and always remember: Yes We Can. Yes We Will.

It’s just amazing to me how prescient his speeches are. He knew what an uphill battle this was going to be. HE KNEW. ….We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics…they will only grow louder and more dissonant …

Thank you for another super day of Coverage for America (I followed a TIMT link, saw a diary by eve based on speculation and hyperbole and a random takeittothestreet or two) and thought about how those people used to say Obama was like Charlie Brown and the football – forever gullible. WELL, DUh, Kossacks!!) I came racing back here. I used to get paid to engage people with mental health issues. Not gonna do it with people without chemical misfires, just egos gone wild.

Thank you for this blog. Good night.

I absolutely love this picture of our radiant First Lady and her beautiful daughters with Nelson Mandela, one of the best of the best. All the pictures from the trip so far have been so moving. And the famous one of Hector Pieterson being carried through the streets is as heartbreaking now as it was then. My youngest sister was 15 in 1976, when she saw that picture. It was her “awakening to the world” moment, and inspired her for years. When she was in her early thirties she went around the world making a movie, by asking people how they thought we could achieve world peace. In Soweto she went into a shop and saw this picture again, and told the shop owner that that was the picture that first inspired her to make the movie. The woman said, the young man carrying the boy is my son. She had never seen him again after that day, but had never heard that he was killed, so to that day, in the 90’s, didn’t know if he was dead, or had escaped and gone into hiding. Such heartbreak, and yet above that picture is radiant proof that we progress toward a better world, however slowly.

Wow – you covered the world in your post, Betsey. Thanks for sharing – your daughter sounds amazing. There are a lot of children who were thrown in jail in Soweto that day, and many never made it out, but stayed imprisoned for years, tortured and abused. I saw a documentary on this years ago, and know of people who struggled in Southern Africa for freedom – even being thrown in jail. Every story is heartbreaking, but thankfully, not without reward for today.

I don’t care for the Boehner cartoon. The implication is that President Obama coddles the right and gives into their tax cut requests. It’s not amusing.

    • June 21, 2011 at 11:01 pm

Hi Claire, yikes, I didn’t see it that way – I just saw it as a crying baby Boehner (is there any other kind?!) begging for more tax cuts, and the President ‘comforting’ him because he bloody well can’t have what he wants! But maybe that’s just me 😆

      • 42 Claire
        June 21, 2011 at 11:33 pm

I think that’s why it was on a PL site. They want to show how the President coddles the right.

There is a story out how President Zuma blew off meeting Michelle, sent a Prisons Minister to meet her at the airport(Zuma was out of the country at the time), however another story is that Michelle was given a time to meet 9am on Wednesday but Michelle is scheduled to making a speech in Soweto so turned down that potential meeting.

    • 45 theo67
      June 21, 2011 at 11:52 pm

I would tend to believe the second story about the scheduling issue. Most leaders would clammer for the publicity of meeting with Mrs. Obama – I can’t imagine that Zuma is any different. And he wouldn’t burn a bridge with President Obama by snubbing his wife. Besides, heads of state rarely meet other visiting dignitaries at the airport.

Good Night Chipsticks. Thanks for all of the beautiful historical moments with our First Lady and First Daughters on their Africa trip. The photos of President Nelson Mandela with our First Lady, Malia and Sasha were especially beautiful. I am so touched because he is one of my most respected persons who caused me to consider an additional career to enhance the education of children who had ambitions to enter into the political arena. Thanks again for this beautiful site, and to all of my family here, I want to say, “Thank you for your sharing, your respect, and your hunger for knowledge. You all are so special.”

Thanks gc and desertflower. You all are so kind. Thanks for thinking of me during this difficult time, but I am resting and trying to take the medications. I came back in to see if there were anymore wonderful treats(lying here reading back and forth with my books). I just do not like not thanking someone for being so kind. It is a habit of mine that has carried me throughout my life, so I hope I do not get on any of my loving family here. Rest peacefully to all of our famiy here. Love you back.

      June 22, 2011 at 12:42 am

Oh yeah I saw that. The video sure has gone viral. It was on Hardball, evening news, CNN, MSNBC, Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the internet. I’m loving it. No msm could say anything snarky about the video. 🙂

But I loooooooved The Colbert Report tonight. He laid into the gop presidential field. rightwingers and others in the msm showed polls where PBO defeats all republicans but apparently against a generic repub he loses. Colbert took the “generic repub” line and ran with it. He used driving/street signs to illustrate their foolishness. When he puts up the clip i’ll have to link it here or Chips might want to check it out and post it as a thread b/c it was hands down hilarious and showed the stupidity of the gop thinking they can defeat PBO with a so called generic rightwing candidate. Seriously he has to win an Emmy over Stewart b/c Colbert has been A-plus from the beginning of 2011 and Stewart has been a wishy-washy a-hole.

Obama probably knew something was up like this, which is why he didn’t inform Pakistan about the raid on bin Laden. Who’s to be really trusted in that nest of backstabbers and spies? Friends with the militants one day, inconvenient allies the next.
