My sister volunteered in Kenya about five years ago (no religious connection) She was with a group of educators. as a librarian. She was tasked with setting up a children’s school library in place of the dozen or so books that had served as one. The school at which she teaches had been collecting and shipping books in advance of her arrival. She came home unable to describe in words what the experience had meant to her. She remained in contact with a teacher there, with whom she corresponded throughout the night of Obama’s win and he gave her a report of the ecstacy and joy of the Kenyans. She loved the land and the people.

Expecting you to find pics, Chips. Poor PBO will be home alone for a whole week without his ladies.

I’m cleaning my office, doing laundry and listening to PBO’s past speeches. Right now I’m listening to his awesome speech in Berlin given during the campaign. Remember it was so successful, McCain and his hapless minions immediately attacked.

    PBO is just amazing.

Shy, the msm might find out that the obamas are just like the common man. We can’t have that getting around, now can we?

CHEERS to the President and his daughters!

Here’s a rough outline of Mrs. O’s itinerary:

    June 21
The First Lady meets the wife of President Jacob Zuma in Pretoria and then travels to Johannesburg to visit the Nelson Mandela Foundation and receive a tour from Mandela’s wife, the humanitarian and former Mozambican first lady Graca Machel. She will also visit the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg.

    June 22
She heads to the Soweto township’s Regina Mundi Church to deliver the keynote address to a forum for young African women leaders. The church became a national symbol of the anti-apartheid struggle during the deadly Soweto student uprising of June 1976.

    June 23
In Cape Town, she visits Robben Island, the prison where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years behind bars.
She meets Bishop DesmondTutu at a soccer stadium that served as a venue during last year’s football World Cup.She is scheduled to meet with groups using soccer as a means to combat HIV and AIDS in South Africa, and the First Lady is expected to take to the pitch to join in drills with girls and boys from the Cape Town area.

    June 24-26
She wraps up her southern Africa trip with a visit to Botswana, where she meets President Ian Khama and visits a children’s clinic.

South Africa is 6 hours ahead of EST and 9 hours ahead PST.

Expecting to see photos, Chip. Poor PBO is home alone without his ladies for a whole week.

I’m cleaning my office and playing PBO’s past speeches on my computer. Right now I’m listening to his awesome speech in Berlin given during the campaign. I remember it was so awesome, McCain and his minions immediately attacked. Losers.

Hi, proud of Obama. Do you have a link to the Berlin speech? I have a printed copy, but would just love to hear this again. It has extra special significance for me due to my very early childhood memories at the time of the Berlin airlift. No one in Berlin (or in Germany for that matter) will ever forget the day then candidate Obama came to visit. My sister who still lives in Germany was glued to her TV and so many millions watched it live – it had more viewers than the national soccer team! And Chancelor Merkel, on her recent visit, couldn’t resist bringing back these memories.

Awesome is an understatement. I think President Obama should hire you, Chipsticks. You are soooo on the ball! Thank you, and now I’ll be going down memory lane. Thanks again. This time I will make sure it stays on my computer forever!

        • June 19, 2011 at 9:19 pm

Thanks for finding it, Chips. You are the best. That was truly an awesome speech and an awesome visit for then candidate Obama. We got to see how he would handle the world stage and of course he was spectacular. The McCain camp went ballistic. Remember McCain went bumbling in a grocery store in a German neighborhood and claimed he’d rather wait until he became president to make such a trip abroad. Ha! Wasn’t going to be an issue for that loser.

        • June 19, 2011 at 9:54 pm

There is one speech that I just love and I have almost all of them on my mp3 player!!! 🙂
The speech in St. Paul, Minnesota when he clinches the nomination. The end of that speech gives me chills every time I listen to it. See how it goes crescendo starting at 24:41 with “So it was….” Just great!!! Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI3FLN1t8j0

How sweet spending Sunday with the family, So thankful our President gets to spend some quality time before they head off to Africa.
One thing, that Republican can’t say about this President is that he lacks ‘Family Values” because deep down, they all wish, they could be just as Good of a Husband and a Father.

President Barack Obama, walks the talk.

Hey Asher, nice to meet, I am a native of Central Africa! I remember the President’s trip to Ghana, though he didn’t stay long, it was already a proud moment for the people in Sub-Saharan Africa. I remember staying up at night just to be able to absorb the emotion, I wanted to see everything live!!! This is going to be another touching moment for the people in the region, for the friends of Africa and supporters of the Obamas!! I just wished Mr. Mandela was in good health and able to meet with them. It would have been unforgettable for the children especially but still…can’t wait!

THERE ISN’T ANYTHING THEY ‘AREN’T’ INVOLVED IN AND THEIR LOVE OF CHILDREN IS SUCH AN AWESOME EXAMPLE FOR EACH AND EVERY FAMILY IN THIS COUNTRY. AND WHEN IT COMES TO GOOD HEALTH AND THE BENEFITS OF A GOOD EDUCATION…WHAT BETTER EXAMPLE COULD YOU HAVE?

Reminds me of something I read relating self-knowledge to humility, and in reading it I thought of President Obama, and the remarkable person that I believe he is. ” It is important to gain self-knowledge as a part of spiritual growth- to know yourself and to believe in yourself means that you can know and believe in God. Knowledge of yourself produces humility, and knowledge of God produces love.”

I believe those who dwell in the positive are able to see President Obama in a true light. I also believe those that cannot are individuals guided by fear not love, and consummed by negativity. Send them light, they are lost in darkness.

No problem with the sandals; born and raised in Hawaii , remember? He looks relaxed. I feel for Sasha who looks a bit annoyed. That woman should not be trying to take pictures of the girls. They will be without their Dad for a week; they should be able to have time with him to enjoy such a simple pleasure without people that they do not know snapping pictures.

    • 92 lisalovesobama
      June 20, 2011 at 1:45 am

I felt the same way about taking the picture of Sasha and based on PBO’s face, he didn’t like it either. She really shouldn’t have done it. I understand that he has a beautiful family and people love them, but at least be respectful and discrete. The lady was ridiculous. You can totally tell that Sasha loves the cameras( I’ve been re-watching home videos and she’s always waving to the camera and smiling), but only on her terms, not when she’s trying to chill and have fun with her pops. Whenever I see her, I always think she’ll be either a movie star or a singer. She’s so cute, you can tell that she’s not naturally very shy. It’s like she’ll go out there and take on the world, one way or another, on her own terms. Sasha was an apt nickname for her, she’s so fierce! **snap snap**

I love the video of President Obama getting sworn in to the Senate. That little stinker Sasha stole the show…..waving and prancing to the crowd. I crack up everytime I see it.

She seems to be always aware of the camera, and I don’t think she always appreciates the intrusion. I don’t know how they put up with it myself, but I am so grateful for their sacrifices. But I agree lisalovesobama….she is Sasha Fierce!

I was browsing the pics on Daylife and Sasha’a face totally screams “GET ME OUT OF HERE!” complete with Dwyane Wade voiceover. Everybody sees her as the spunky, impish, photogenic one (which she is) but Malia is way more relaxed in front of large crowds and cameras. Don’t know if it’s age or personality or combo.

Malia’s body is to die for: tall, slender, tan, everything! She was blessed inside and out.

Avery looks like a young man and I spy Leslie. Malia and Leslie will definitely have a good time together in Africa.

Love Barack’s shirt. It’s the same one he wore to his birthday barbeque at the White House last year.

Hope everybody has a fun and safe trip (wasn’t expecting them to leave so soon). I hope the Prez can get through debt limit negotiations for an entire week without his family to go home to at the end of the nigh.

      June 19, 2011 at 10:17 pm

Yes Malia is a magazine type of chic but she wouldn’t get into the modelling business though. Well if I was her I wouldn’t because it could be a nasty business! I can see the boys lining up! She’s gorgeous and I know President Obama knows it! He got his work cut out for him…but with a mom like Michelle if Malia’s taste in men is the same as her mom PBO wouldn’t have to worry about a thing though. I don’t get why people say ‘tan’ for black people..it sounds weid lol. Everything about this girls is perfect….there is three words to describe her; beauty, grace and ofc she’s Ms. Oracle 🙂
Oh and regarding Sasha..she do look like she gets a bit uncomfortable with cameras around unlike Malia. But when she was younger it didn’t seem so..I am guessing it’s the age..guessing.

I think Malia seems so calm because she inherited her temperament from Daddy. Plus, remember PBO said on GMA that Malia is the most emotionally intelligent person he’s ever known? Ya, PBO, she got that from you. Probably Sasha takes after Miche more, more fun loving and easy going, but sometimes they need the quiet, to be out of the glaring spot light.

  33. June 19, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Now I’m watching Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama’s DNC acceptance speech. Wow! Everything he said he would do in that speech, he is doing. And he talked about how hard it would be to bring about change. Boy, the PL left idiots were just not listening or chose to ignore his words. What a man of integrity and honor.

Sorry to switch from an excellent subject, the Obamas, to an icky one, Michelle Bachmann——but I just read a story on the Daily Beast about Michelle’s gross looking husband, sorry for my shallowness but he is, said to be her only political adviser. He is in the “Christian counselling” biz, very anti-gay, has referred to gays as “barbarians”(maybe Choi would prefer this candidate?) He got his masters at Pat Robertson’s Regent University—-ay yi yi—–and his PHD in clinical psychology from some fakey correspondence school (didn’t even know that was possible). Writer remarks on how she’s somehow been transformed from oddball outsider to some credible candidate (thank you stupid and unethical news media). I marvel at how talk show pundits are able to talk about the possibility of her getting the Republican nomination for President of the United States with a straight face. Unbelievable!

The right wing is dangerous and desperate. Bachman would be entirely divisive. Apparently, she even denounced gays in her own immediate family (siblings). Really despicable.

Wow, can you imagine having Michelle Bachman for a sister AND being gay?? WHEEEWWEEEE. Thanksgiving in THAT house must be a hoot!!! 😉 😉

      June 19, 2011 at 10:35 pm

This is innuendo, but the rumors have circulated for years that he is gay. If you do a little research many of the things the Bachmann’s have involved themselves in locally (Stillwater Minnesota) have become controversial. I know the pastor at the church they were affiliated with locally was long under investigation by the IRS.
He lives a very, very rich lifestyle complete with private jet. She has little to show for her years in the House of Representatives. I am stymied as to why she is thought of as Presidential timbre. I think she is a total whack job, fueled by extreme religious zealotry, but wrapped in a pretty package. I don’t think there is anything wrong with being gay, but the hypocrisy of some Republicans as it relates to LBGT issues and social issues in general is more than I can tolerate. My brother commented today that if you are a Republican, you are essentially not a nice person. I agree.

      • 111 theo67
        June 19, 2011 at 11:08 pm

I totally agree with your brother. I can’t imagine a good person endorsing anything that Republicans stand for – and their tactics. Just look at how vile Chris Christie is – even when he’s trying to endorse his family values, it always ends up being very selfish. He goes to Disney world right when his state is about to be hit with a huge storm, and he knows his deputy is dealing with a sick father. He goes to his son’s game in a state paid helicopter and then onto a meeting with a bunch of idiots trying to inflict him on the rest of the country. They just can’t seem to get it right. They think they’re exhibiting family values, and yet they are selfishly inflicting the cost onto other people.

As for Bachmann’s husband – well, I’ve heard that some people hate the people who most reflect themselves. If the rumors are true, that would explain why he’s so against gay people. As with Weiner and Grayson and Feingold and Bachmann – what is their record in Congress? What have they done for the people of this country? All talk, no action.

I cmpletely agree with your brother Sue…

In my opinion, anyone who identifies as republican today, is simply not an intrinsically good or nice person…

      • June 20, 2011 at 5:54 am

I was on another site and some Republican were talking about people being on foodstamps. So I ask the question, why is it okay for big Oil Companies, and rich people to get money from the Government, but Repbulicans complain about something helping the poor and needy. I don’t want my taxes going to rich people like the Koch brothers, who is doing just fine. But these Republicans have no problem in making the Bush tax cuts permanent. These Republicans are the very one who will preach about their religion, but no where in the Bible do I see where it says take from the poor, the middle class and give to the rich. I couldn’t be a Republican, because I honestly feel alot of them are racists, not all, but a heck of a lot. Not that Dems are perfect. How can you talk about destroying Medicare, and repealing the Healthcare Reform. Do they give a darn that people don’t have health insurance? As for Michelle Bachmann, she is just another Sarah Palin, except she might not be as dumb as Palin.

This pray away the gay BS chaps my ass, and I agree with Theo67 that so often those endorsing a cure for “the gay” are themselves, self loathing and closeted gays. God doesn’t make junk, funny how that doesn’t seemed to be recognized by this particular group of “Christians”.

Ya’ll KNOW I love my president in jeans! I am a happy woman. Now, Malia and Sasha are just too cool. I’m sure they are pretty tired of being followed everywhere they go, but they seem to take it in stride. And Barack and Michelle allow them to be as “normal” as possible, given the circumstances. I’m also very glad that they decided, after that one interview, to keep them away from the media.

They appear to be typically developing girls. Malia seems a bit more introverted, reflective about it all. She is going to be a stunning young woman. Sasha seems spunkier, yet somehow, bored of it all at the same time. It’s like she’s thinking “will ya’ll PLEASE get over us! We are normal, just like you, WHAT is the big fuss?”

I’ve been to West Africa, but not South Africa. And I’ve never been on a safari. I’m sure they will have a wonderful time. And I would love to have a conversation with Marian Robinson. I’m sure, never in a zillion years, did she think she and her family would experience such wonderful experiences.

I’m sure the Rethugs are gonna try to blow this up, but like Chica’s earlier post, Laura Bush took her two daughters to Africa. So, let’s see how they act now… Like the kids say “whatever….”

Sue, I think there is a buzz around any president. But Obama’s “buzz” is higher than most I’ve known. And while I now have a different opinion of Pres. Clinton, I have to say there was a palpable buzz when he came in the room. I remember seeing him at a stadium event in Philadelphia, and even in that crowd, you KNEW he had just gotten there. The same thing, even bigger, happens when Pres. Obama enters an area. There were thousands of people when he came to Philadelphia. It was so cool to watch how focused people were the second he hit the stage. And we had the privilege of having him AND VP Joey!!

      Woo hoo!!!

Just watched Katrina van den heuvel who said that lbj was a much stronger president than Obama. And that she admires kucinich and she thinks the media should give him a platform. Oh, and they don’t?
    She is stupid!

    • June 20, 2011 at 8:55 am

        June 20, 2011 at 10:58 am

Me niether. Katrina can just go somewhere and sit down and stfu.

PBO should not ever be compared to LBJ as their political careers are so different.
Johnson was paranoid about the Kennedy legacy and only pushed through Civil Rights legislation because he thought the country would hate him if he did not finish what Kennedy started. Not to take away from LBJ as he did work very hard to push the 1964 act through. However, LBJ had the power and goods from having been in the Senate so long, he knew where the bones were buried and he was also a good ol southern boy who could negotiate those Dixie Democrats into doing his bidding. Even so, LBJ knew the Democratic party had lost the South for at least 2 decades and even said so subsequent to signing the bill. His words were prophetic as it has been 5 decades and the Democratic party still cannot win the south as all the Dixiecrat ‘sons of the south’ are now in the GOP. So, LBJ wasn’t as much so much stronger as he was a ‘son of the south’ and had history in the Senate.

It also helped that LBJ had that great MN statesman as his V.P.

    • 149 Jessica
      June 20, 2011 at 12:25 pm

LBJ used mob tactics to get legislation passed. He would threaten to reveal Congressmen and Senators affairs/scandals if they didn’t vote for the Civil Rights Act. Even though that would have been helpful in the public option debate I don’t want the President to downgrade to that level. He’s above that. And Obama couldn’t even get away with it with all the technology.

“I couldn’t have told you we were going to do this until I got home,” [Huntsman] said during a recent stop in Berlin, N.H., adding that he first met the team the day after his return. “I didn’t know anybody around the table. They were all brand-new.”

“We were overwhelmed, really,” said his wife, Mary Kaye. “We had no idea that all the groundwork had been done.”

Yeah, okay. sure. You didn’t know anybody around the table. Your wife had no idea. But yet, there was a PAC sending emails in March asking for $50,000 – $100.000 donations “ready to assist him if he decides to run for the presidency in 2012 and/or 2016.” Huntsman sent his resignation letter in January indicating he would stay thru the end of April. But he and his wife had no idea….

It really is shady stuff. And if he walked into a ready made campaign – that means he had no say in his top level staffers all the way down the food chain. So it’s not even really his campaign – he’s the puppet candidate. The question becomes – “Who is pulling his strings”?

in the NYT times article yesterday:

As guests including Barbra Streisand and Yo Yo Ma mingled in three resplendent rooms in the White House in January to honor President Hu Jintao of China, David Axelrod, President Obama’s senior strategist, needed to take care of some political housekeeping.

The president’s envoy to Beijing, former Gov. Jon M. Huntsman Jr. of Utah, a Republican who was in town for Mr. Hu’s visit, was rumored to be considering a run for the boss’s job in 2012. Happening upon Mr. Huntsman in the State Room, Mr. Axelrod confronted him.

“He said, ‘I don’t know where this is all coming from,’ ” Mr. Axelrod recalled, “ ‘It’s way overblown.’ ”

When Mr. Axelrod shared that story during an interview last week, Mr. Huntsman was completing plans for an announcement on Tuesday that he indeed intends to run for president.

Mr. Huntsman’s decision prompted a mix of suspicion and resignation among the president’s advisers: suspicion that Mr. Huntsman had not always been straight about his national aspirations, and resignation that, as one presidential strategist put it, “There’s no loyalty in politics,” especially when it comes to across-the-aisle alliances.
