‘a day of awkwardness with mitt romney’

Dana Milbank (Washington Post): Mitt Romney had just finished working the room at Blake’s Creamery when he paused for a photo with the restaurant’s owner and decided to tell her a joke.

“I saw the young man over there with eggs Benedict, with hollandaise sauce,” he said. “And I was going to suggest to you that you serve your eggs with hollandaise sauce in hubcaps. Because there’s no place like chrome for the holidays.” The proprietor laughed weakly…. The hubcap joke must have killed in Michigan in the 1950s, when Romney was a boy. What’s odd is that he’s still making such jokes….

In formal settings Romney is confident and competent. But in casual moments … his weirdness comes through – equal parts Leave-It-to-Beaver corniness and social awkwardness …. He greets a man perusing shelves of a hardware store: “Shopping here today?”

…He talks about the weak economy with the proprietors of a feed shop, then abruptly pivots: “Okay, so what do you do about mosquito control? … This has been a mosquito-infested year with all the moisture. They flew away with my dog.”

….Posing for a photo with his arms around the waitresses, he suddenly jumps forward, pretending somebody pinched his bottom. “Oh my goodness gracious!” he exclaims, then, “Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.” He later says the gag is “kind of fun to do.”

…. To two older women who just came from the gym: “Are your knees, hips doing okay?” To an old married couple: “You know each other?” Romney seemed to be auditing one man: “What’s happened to your financials the last couple of years?”

He departed Blake’s with a final plea for support in the New Hampshire primary, scheduled for Feb. 14. “Get out and vote,” he encouraged the diners. “It’s a while, though, I think. What is it, November? … It’s not November. It’s January. It’s February!”….

This stuff they’ll try and make endearing. They saw how it worked in the Michigan Governors campaign with “One Tough Nerd” being Snyder’s campaign slogan – and people loved it.

Majority older, whiter people loved in. 2012 is a different story. Youth will look at him and go, Hell to the no.

Yep, Slick Rick didn’t even have to debate his opponent. Now everybody in Michigan is walking around shell shocked, after hearing about his awful policies…..AFTER the election.

I’ve always felt there is something basic missing within Romney. He does appear excruciatingly awkward at times. That stuff in the Milbank story was just embarrassing. Romney is trying too hard, and it’s uncomfortable to watch. He’s not a natural people person. He’s pretending, and it comes off fakey and stiff.
Every time I see him or hear his name, I always think of that horrific, cruel true story of him strapping his Irish Setter in his carrier to the roof of his car where he remained for 12 hours as the family drove from Boston to Ontario on vacation. Of course the dog became deathly ill and literally scared s__tless. Poo streamed down from the roof over the windows as the story goes, but they drove on. Something is seriously wrong with someone who could do that to their family pet, who could not see the torture they inflicted, or care.

Huntsman and Pawlenty are the same way – awkward as hell. If there is the famous GOP beer test and anybody chooses any of these three over Obama than they’re big fat liars or just as creepy socially as these three are.

I mean I get it, they know every move, every sentence will be dissected so they’re painfully aware of everything they say or do while trying to be unaffected and natural. Basically take a 3 hour professional job interview and expand that out over 18 months.

Let that story serve as a metaphor for how responsive President Romney would be to a country in distress. If the voters want to be a seriously panicked and physically ill dog strapped on the roof of a car defecating all over the place with Romney carrying on as if nothing unusual, then let them vote him in.

I still maintain that he is an automaton that is convinced that it’s destined to be part of Disney’s “Hall of Presidents’ display. Does he even blink?!

Let’s not forget about him singing “Who Let the Dogs Out” complete with 2 barks with a group of black children. Sigh *facepalm*

He’s a creepy dude with no spine. I don’t know who will win the NBA championship next year but I can guarantee you that Mitt Romney will not be elected President.

That Who Let The Dogs Out incident is so wrong and so bad. I’m reminded of my daughter who used to hide behind a couch pillow when there was something embarrassing on TV, or put her hands in front of her face and peek through slightly spread fingers. Romney makes me want to hide behind the pillow and not even peek through my fingers.

I think Romney is Weiner wanna be. Shame on him for embarrassing those women.

    • June 14, 2011 at 8:02 pm

The thing is M4O, I think some guys could do something like that and it would seem funny and harmless – he’s just so awkward and creepy it looked, well, creepy.

  11. June 14, 2011 at 7:46 pm

Doesn’t the magic underwear make him impervious to booty pinches?

Mitt’s awkwardness will get more visible….he can’t sustain for 17 months. He will eventually make some huge humiliating gaffe that even the MSM will acknowledge. He just can’t help it. Remember 2007…Hillary was the “inevitable” Demo candidate…..front runner is not good this far out. You have nowhere to go but down. Obaa always likes to run as the underdog….and even though he isn’t, some of the spin tries to make it so. That’s when he’s the best!

My God what a joke he is. I saw a clip of him walking out on the stage at the debate. What a stupid wooden dork. All PBO has to do is walk out on stage with that sexy swagga and the debate will be over before it starts.

Oh, my God. What was that he did in that video. Is that the one where he did the pretend pinch thingy? How awkward. He is trying way too hard and that is just totally inappropriate. Yikes!!

  18. June 14, 2011 at 8:36 pm

Another thing, did he really think anyone would buy that those ladies would want to touch his tush? Ewwwww. It would be believable if it was PBO. That presidential bum is definitely worth grabbing.

I bet his handlers will put an end to his butt pinching “joke” – we’ll never see it again. It’s not funny – especially when doing to to strangers, it’s creepy.

  20. June 14, 2011 at 8:51 pm

    That was painful to read.

  21. June 14, 2011 at 9:20 pm

Who want to grab or pinch Romney’s butt or any married man butt? Not me, because I wouldn’t want any woman pinching my husband butt. Plus their is a thing call respect for the President and for his wife.

Just another thought…..have you noticed how iserable his wife usually looks when she’s on the stage with him? Either that or a glassy stare. I remember ten years ago when he was strying to humanize himself (How horrible to have to do that!) and talking about his marriage, talking about how long he’s been married, and that his wife was a “babe!” He does not get it at all!!!
How can anyone believe him about being a great businessman? He INHERITED $200 mil and American Motors, and where are American Motors now??? He is a job destroyer!
