all over?

BBC: Senior US Democrats have called for the resignation of a New York congressman who admitted sending lewd photos of himself to women.

National party chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said Anthony Weiner’s behaviour was “indefensible” …. the “sordid affair” had become an “unacceptable distraction”.

“It is with great disappointment that I call on Representative Anthony Weiner to resign,” she said in a statement. “The behaviour he has exhibited is indefensible and Representative Weiner’s continued service in Congress is untenable.”

Nancy Pelosi, Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, said Mr Weiner had recognised that he “needs help”. “I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a member of Congress,” she said.

Congressman Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, also called for Mr Weiner to go, saying: “With a heavy heart, I call on Anthony to resign.”

***

NYT: Representative Anthony D. Weiner planned to check himself into a treatment center on Saturday after House Democratic leaders, including Nancy Pelosi, called on him to resign and suggested he needed psychiatric counseling.

A spokeswoman for Mr. Weiner said he would request a leave of absence from the House and seek treatment, but provided no further details.

“Congressman Weiner departed this morning to seek professional treatment to focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person,” said the spokeswoman, Risa Heller. “In light of that, he will request a short leave of absence from the House of Representatives so that he can get evaluated and map out a course of treatment to make himself well.”

Chips, didn’t you hear. Weiner checked himself into treatment center today. I am sure these Democrats knew this before calling for him to resign. This will look like a ploy from those democratic leaders. If they wanted him to resign, they should have done it before today.

Hi Symmetry, I didn’t hear that, I just saw photos of him being pursued by the media today around Queens when he was at the laundry. I’m guessing reports of his ‘web contact’ with a 17-year-old were the final straw for DWS, etc – hard to see him recovering from that, if it’s true.

        June 11, 2011 at 4:06 pm

Not only that, but the fact that Weiner could have been tweeting these photos to minors or even police officers, which would have made it a felony and landed him in prison. Of Course DWS isn’t going to have any of that in her party, save that kind of trash for the Republicans.

His constituents want him to stay though. I saw on CNN two ladies begging him stay. One said he should go. He will stay if his constituents want him to stay. That is is saving factor right now. But, don’t follow me Chips, lol. I took you down the wrong road two weeks ago, because I thought he was innocent. Well hope you guys will forgive me. I’m a softy and 62 years of age and have seen a lot. I think I heard that his wife wants him to stay also. We’ll see.

If it’s true that his wife wants him to stay, then it truly is more about politics than about morals.

Heck, it didn’t take Elisabeth Edwards that long to dump John when she found out he fathered a child with his mistress, it didn’t take long for Ellen Nodgren to dump Tiger after the numerous women he reportedly was with, and it didn’t take Sandra Bullock that long to dump Jesse James when she found out he cheated on her with that tattooed trash Bombshell McGee, so what is Weiner’s wife’s problem? Why is she sticking with him even after he not only admitted to tweeting these photos, but LYING about it?

Her mentor is Hillary Clinton and we know she stayed with Bill. Do you think Bill and Hill are advising them not to throw in the towel yet?

As a matter of fact, it’s all making sense, seeing as Weiner is close friends with the Clinton camp.

You’d think that Weiner would have learned from Bill’s mistake, about lying though… apparently not.

Thing is, Weiner isn’t in Bill’s position. Bill was POTUS at a time when our country was economically sound, whereas Weiner is just another House Rep who’s been on teevee running his mouth but really getting nothing of substance done, yet he’s a hero to the UNprofessional left.

Which makes Clinton even worse, being head of state, and representing a nation. I’m not defending Weiner, but these double standards are simply disgusting. If his constituents want him to stay, overwhelmingly, like Clinton’s backers defended him, then he should stay because both Dems and Rethugs have done some disgusting things throughout history, yet the citizens support bad behavior. What makes now any different?

I absolutely agree with you EDP4PBO…

As angry as I am with Anthony Weiner and as resentful as I’ve felt towards him for his disrespectful and horrid attitude towards President Obama, I too find the double standards infinitely galling…

This absolutely does not compare with the sins of John Edwards and Bill Clinton who brazenly had actual physical affairs right under their wives noses and actively sought to deceive their wives and the public…

Weiners stupidity and arrogance veered off course as he felt more invincible and got even bolder and careless…

Unlike the other wives who stay, I do not project any motives on his wife in her decision to stay with him other than that she loves him…

They’ve only been married a year and I honestly think that with Weiner, some of his sexual predilections from his carefree days as a bachelor just a short time ago, have been hard to shake…

I hope they stay together and their love, commitment tto each other and marriage only strengthens; I hope he spends the rest of their time on earth doing better and making it up to her…

                  I wish them both well..

I think Weiner is doing the right thing by checking himself in for counseling. This will take him out of the spotlight , away from this hungry media and the nasty hypocritical republicans. I expect the Dems to call for a resignation when one of the repugs get caught with their pants down again. I think Vitter should be mentioned more in the media also. I just don’t like the hypocrisy and double standards being played out by the media and repugs.

I think that this has gone too far. What ever one’s feeling about AW are, he is hurting the party. The dems are trying to win back the house and keep the senate. This is no longer about Weiner this is about the dems winning in 2012.

Doris, I understand this is a difficult situation, but right or wrong, this type of behavior is not acceptable for many people. If it comes down to the party survival versus weiner so be it.

Well, there’s no such thing as a “leave of absence” from Congress. In Gabby Gifford’s case, I think they had to take a special vote on her continued membership.

He keeps saying he’s not resigning but when your own party leaders ask you to go in light of all that’s happened and the drip, drip, drip of investigations and allegations, he really does need to step aside. He is in total denial. I don’t think he’ll last through the weekend.

I feel worse for the people who work for him. For legislative aides, their careers are in jeopardy, that is for sure.

That is just it. Judging from the picture that is emerging about this guy, he is all about himself, even in his dealings with his colleagues. He owed it to his staff and others that he worked with to have spoken the truth from the beginning. I don’t see how he thought that any of this would have gone away by telling a fib. It was not like he had the one picture. He had multiple conversations, etc. out there. From the get go, he should have had someone he could trust, tell them the truth, figure out a way to admit what he did, before ever speaking to the press. You wonder if he even has a close friend, someone you could confide almost anything to.

He’s probably only now checking himself into treatment to buy more time to cover his hide. If you guys have not see this article on how he worked with his colleague, check this out.

It’s a shame though…but it seems the DNC and it’s members in congress are making a futuristic statistical calculation that willy nilly, some GOP congress person will have their own scandal sooner or later. Having called for Weiner’s resignation will put them on a moral high-ground to beat into the gr4ound any GOPer with a scandal in the future…and of course the GOP leaders also would have no other recourse than to back such calls at that time.

Having said that, why is this Weinergate more important to the American people than the fact that congress men/women of one particular party sign a pledge to an individual (Grover Norquist) before the start of every new session….isn’t that unconstitutional?

And the UNprofessional left continue to bend over backwards to defend this guy, pointing at Ensign, Vitter, etc etc etc…

Just because the Republicans have no morals doesn’t give the excuse that Democrats need to follow suit. And let’s not forget, this is the same Weiner jerk who lectured POTUS on not being a “values oriented guy,” yet Weiner tweets his weenie to females he doesn’t even know, and LIES about it… all while his wife is pregnant.

He’s in the same sh!tpile as John Edwards, Jesse James, and Tiger Woods. He deserves every ounce of sh!t being tossed at him, and I’m glad that the Democratic Party leadership actually has spine and is not playing politics with this issue, calling for him to step down.

As for the UNprofessional left, let them whine. They’re still whining over Alan Grayson and Russ Feingold being shellacked last fall in the midterms, all while attacking our POTUS and stabbing him in the back.

        June 11, 2011 at 4:26 pm

“lack of leadership of the President” it’s clear we have a HUGE lack of basic Civics 101 going on with the UNprofessional left.

Firstly, POTUS has nothing to do with Congress, except lobby folks to support his/her agenda. They have nothing to do with what Congress does during their personal time, and I fail to see how POTUS is to blame for Weiner tweeting his weenie and lying about it.

It’s sad and telling how the UNprofessional left goes to bat for proven losers (Feingold, Grayson, Wiener) but continues to stab a winner like our POTUS in the back and call him spineless. It shows how much they know, which is NOTHING at ALL!

I know that’s right. It was the Ed Schultz radio show (which I should not have been listening to) he had a guest host – name escapes me and I did not recognize him anyway – the caller said that Weiner would not have dared crossed the line as he did if he knew the leader of the party would not stand for it – so therefore its the President’s fault for being such a weak leader. Needless to say I immediately changed the station! Don’t need my blood pressure rising!

The PL loved anyone who slammed POTUS. It is pitiful to look back at their most admired, most of them now long gone. It was despicable when Weiner decided he needed to blast President Obama for not being a “values oriented guy”, which may be the biggest lie ever told. But it is really incomprehensible to look at that disgraceful moment now in light of all that has been revealed about Weiner’s values. He obviously has some big problems in addition to exhibiting a stunning lack of judgment and a willingness to engage in reckless behavior. He should resign if he has any concern for his party or his country, anything beyond himself. He has become a sad, national joke.

I’m with you doster. Weiner “has become a sad, national joke,” and he needs to go,NOW. Moreover, he is a major distraction which makes him ineffective as a representative for his constituents and makes the Democratic Party ineffective because of the distraction. In addition, I, for one, cannot forgive him for the way he wrongly blasted President Obama when it was so uncalled for. 😦 I strongly feel he should resign ASAP. Weiner’s refusal to resign NOW for the good of “The Party” makes him a very “small” public servant in comparison to Van Jones who honorably and heroically resigned from President Obama’s staff so as not become “a distraction” for Health Care Reform efforts back in 2010.

While I have no hatred for the man, not any more than I have for the ridiculous leaders we have had, he is being dillusional, in my opinion, by assuming he’ll get any relief from a congress that cares little about the people there, with most of them willing to do and say anything to shame the leader of the free world. I know it is easy to become worried, given the media’s propensity for sensationalism, but he will be OK. I read here the other day that on ABC, George Stephanapolous tried to ask Jake Tapper if the president was behind pushing Weiner out. And supposedly to his credit Tapper crused that meme. We have to trust that despite the media incessant need to engage in fluff, when we have colossal issues to deal with, president Obama will methodically inform them.

Today, in a letter I sent to people at MSNBC and NBC, I told them that the our press has devolved into a giant reality show. And I think our president knows this and tries to steer away from getting caught up in their silly plot lines.

They read their e-mails, tweets, facebook, etc., simply because their egos won’t allow them to ignore them. Often when I get responses to some of my emails, they are almost always defensive.

Hey, don’t worry about POTUS. He’ll keep his cool and steer the questioning to something that really matters. We’re speaking of Barack Obama here, Me4obama. Like the photo of him says, “Chill the F… Out, I’ve Got This”. 😀

The President Barack Obama that I’ve come to know and respect does not shy away from an interview. He knows how to handle a situation and he comes well prepared. I have no concerns that he will handle this just as he’s faced and handled many many other interruptions during his course of the People’s business.

  16. June 11, 2011 at 4:29 pm

he comes well prepared. I would like to add EVERY TIME. Look, He’s BRILLIANT, WISE, Playing Chess, while theMSM Is playing checkers, huh, yeah, Prez Is ALWAYS ready

There is a top rec’d diary on the Old Orange advising Weiner to “resist” calls for resignation from higher-ups.

OT: Gary Johnson (Glen Greenwald’s dream presidential candidate) decided to have a “debate” on FOX NEWS using an actor to impersonate President Obama. Hack John Stossel made an even further arse of himself by agreeing to moderate that silly circus of a debate. Boy times are crazy and people are desperate!!!

How totally asinine. As I said before, our press has devolved into a giant reality show. We just have to work hard to pushing back at these arses.

Isn’t it awful, I remember watching the movie “Network” and laughing until I cried thinking this is over the top, I now see how prescient it was, watched it again a couple of months ago and felt more like crying than laughing.

Who checks into a treatment center for this? I’m missing something, or something is being missed/ omitted in this story.

Sherijr., my opinion is that it is a person who is trying to cover his behind, simple as that. Go figure.

      • June 11, 2011 at 4:48 pm

Ahh thank you Africa, that makes more sense. Because I’m finding this all too weird. He sends ‘lewd’ photos.. I mean its crude and adolescent but how does this equate to ““needs help”. .. as Pelosi said. I mean I don’t like the guy, solely because of his attacks on President Obama and I think his immature behavior here is very silly and childish but I’m still not getting this incensed attitude by dems calling for him to resign. He’s a liar obviously and a fool, but still there is an access of lying and foolishness by members of Congress and he is by far not the worst of the lot. And now a treatment center?? good grief.

        • June 11, 2011 at 4:49 pm

oops, should say “excess” not access 😉

There may be something more that we are not aware of. Something that may eventually come out and be a lot more disturbing than a bunch of smutty photos. No one checks into any center willingly unless there is something really deep going on.

I have written a long email to Ann Curry and informed her that I trust her journalistic principles and asked her to treat the President’s interview he has granted her with respect and dignity the office of the President requires. I also reminded her that while the president was trying to capture Bin laden the media was busy asking him to produce his BIrth Certicate and ended by reminding her that she will have time to interview reality stars and carnival backers but PBO has the whole country and the world to take care of. Fingers crossed.

I am not defending Weiner, but why didn’t everyone call on Ensign or Vitter to resign.

Is this only a democratic thing??? If it was any other person soliciting a prostitute, they would be jailed, but not Vitter?

    I hate these double standards.

well the DemoWIMPS kept their traps shut and never went on tv like you see Coulter;Breitbart and their follow Tea’s take control of the media.

They should have been on tv letting people know that Vitters not only was wearing a diaper but he was with a prostitute which is breaking the law over and over but I guess they’ll blame Vitter still in Congress on POTUS

p.s: it’s not late for them but the hard part is to get them to fight for some airtime 🙄

    • June 11, 2011 at 6:15 pm

Ensign is done. He had presidential ambitions which quickly dissipated when the scandal broke. That’s good enough for me because I’m sure that was pretty devastating for him. Vitter – his constituents voted for him again to represent them even after Dems went after him on his behavior during the election.

As I said before, Weiner is a self promoting jackass. That being said, why should he resign? I think its for his contituents to decide. And come on, all the morality parading representatives aint saints either. Did he do his job? As far as I see/hear, he did do a job for his district. Its btn him and his wife and though I am female, I aint going to fight other peoples wars, that is for the wife to do and she is standing by him. So I will pass no judgement and as sure as hell wont call on him to resign and he shouldnt and should not be forced to . What he did was damn and childish, but he didnt steal, take bribes or murder someone.

If he wants to do what his constituents want then he should announce that he is now an independent. He should leave the Democratic party because he obviously only cares about himself. If he doesn’t care how this reflects on the Democratic party then he should leave the party.

Remember Marion Barry……with all his problems……I guess DC didn’t care..and he was re-elected, I’ve listed all his legal troubles..The American people seem t be forgiving.

Barry was charged with three felony counts of perjury, 10 counts of misdemeanor drug possession, and one misdemeanor count of conspiracy to possess cocaine. The criminal trial ended in August 1990 with a conviction for only one possession incident, which had occurred in November 1989, and an acquittal on another

Failures to file tax returns and pay taxes

On October 28, 2005, Barry pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charges stemming from an IRS investigation. The mandatory drug testing for the hearing showed Barry as being positive for cocaine and marijuana. On March 9, 2006, he was sentenced to three years probation for misdemeanor charges of failing to pay federal and local taxes, and underwent drug counseling.[60][61]

In October, 1991 Barry surrendered himself at a correctional facility in Petersburg, Virginia. After an alleged sexual misconduct resulted in his transfer to another federal prison in Loretto, Pennsylvania, midway through his sentence, Barry was released in April 1992.
    [edit] Post-conviction

n July 2007, Marion Barry was chosen as one of fifty wax statues to debut in the Washington D.C. franchise of Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. Barry was chosen by a majority of Washington residents and tourists from Tussauds’ “Top 10 Wish List,” in a contest that pitted him against Cal Ripken, Al Gore, Denzel Washington, Carl Bernstein, Halle Berry, Martin Sheen, Marilyn Monroe, Nancy Reagan and Oprah Winfrey.[55]

Barry ran for reelection in 2008 and easily held off all five challengers in the Democratic primary: Ahmad Braxton-Jones, Howard Brown, Chanda McMahan, Sandra Seegars and Charles Wilson.[56] No Republican or Statehood Green candidates filed to run in the Ward 8 council race.

“Checking into rehab” is like when the Repugs declare that they have sought forgiveness from Christ for their sex scandals.

Finally Democrats who mess up have now found their “get out of jail free” card just as their Repug counterparts use the Jesus “get out of jail free” card. Didn’t Sanford, Ensign, Vitter, Gingrich all use the same cop out? Heck didn’t Newtie even throw in excess patriotic zeal, and such “deeeeeeeeeeeeeep” love for country to defend his serial womanizing and divorces?

    Crazy country!!!! 🙄

The silver lining in all this is that every single detractor who has viciously challenged or demonized this President from his US senate run for office until now has spectacularly crashed and choked on their own vices. As an African methinks President Obama has some mean protective forces slaying the dragons that cross his path. If I were his political enemies I would be quaking in my boots. The evidence of disasters for any detractor of this President is too overwhelming.

Obama haters, beware!!! As far as this President is concerned, Karmic justice is 100% guaranteed. Be afraid, be very afraid…..!! 😆

I absolutely agree with you Zizi…
Just had a similar conversation with my sister, but I wondered why it was just the Dem detractors that were being whacked by God…

She contends that God is saving the best for last and that in the next year 2012, the big whammy really begins for the Republicans and the most horrid of President Obama’s attackers will finally get what’s been coming to them…

She said to watch them all begin to implode, explode and drop like flies…

Can’t mess with God’s anointed for this long and expect to walk away scot free…

Did I mention that my sister is a modern day Catholic visionary…

Yes that is so true. Even Bin Laden who reportedly became obsessed with killing PBO ended up dead shortly thereafter, despite the fact that he had successfully eluded US forces for 8 long years…hmmmmm

Oh good grief! Even more pictures have surfaced on TMZ and they show Weiner in various states of undress and holding his “weiner”, the problem for him is the pictures have been confirmed to have been taken at the House of Representatives Gym and were sent to at least one woman. Stick a fork in ‘im, he’s done!
