BBC: Senior US Democrats have called for the resignation of a New York congressman who admitted sending lewd photos of himself to women.
National party chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said Anthony Weiner’s behaviour was “indefensible” …. the “sordid affair” had become an “unacceptable distraction”.
“It is with great disappointment that I call on Representative Anthony Weiner to resign,” she said in a statement. “The behaviour he has exhibited is indefensible and Representative Weiner’s continued service in Congress is untenable.”
Nancy Pelosi, Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, said Mr Weiner had recognised that he “needs help”. “I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a member of Congress,” she said.
Congressman Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, also called for Mr Weiner to go, saying: “With a heavy heart, I call on Anthony to resign.”

NYT: Representative Anthony D. Weiner planned to check himself into a treatment center on Saturday after House Democratic leaders, including Nancy Pelosi, called on him to resign and suggested he needed psychiatric counseling.
A spokeswoman for Mr. Weiner said he would request a leave of absence from the House and seek treatment, but provided no further details.
“Congressman Weiner departed this morning to seek professional treatment to focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person,” said the spokeswoman, Risa Heller. “In light of that, he will request a short leave of absence from the House of Representatives so that he can get evaluated and map out a course of treatment to make himself well.”

Hi Symmetry, I didn’t hear that, I just saw photos of him being pursued by the media today around Queens when he was at the laundry. I’m guessing reports of his ‘web contact’ with a 17-year-old were the final straw for DWS, etc – hard to see him recovering from that, if it’s true.
Not only that, but the fact that Weiner could have been tweeting these photos to minors or even police officers, which would have made it a felony and landed him in prison. Of Course DWS isn’t going to have any of that in her party, save that kind of trash for the Republicans.
His constituents want him to stay though. I saw on CNN two ladies begging him stay. One said he should go. He will stay if his constituents want him to stay. That is is saving factor right now. I think Weiner is doing the right thing by checking himself in for counseling. This will take him out of the spotlight , away from this hungry media and the nasty hypocritical republicans. I expect the Dems to call for a resignation when one of the repugs get caught with their pants down again. I think Vitter should be mentioned more in the media also. Well, there’s no such thing as a “leave of absence” from Congress. In Gabby Gifford’s case, I think they had to take a special vote on her continued membership.
He keeps saying he’s not resigning but when your own party leaders ask you to go in light of all that’s happened and the drip, drip, drip of investigations and allegations, he really does need to step aside. He is in total denial. I don’t think he’ll last through the weekend.
I feel worse for the people who work for him. For legislative aides, their careers are in jeopardy, that is for sure.
That is just it. Judging from the picture that is emerging about this guy, he is all about himself, even in his dealings with his colleagues. He owed it to his staff and others that he worked with to have spoken the truth from the beginning. I don’t see how he thought that any of this would have gone away by telling a fib. It was not like he had the one picture. He had multiple conversations, etc. out there. From the get go, he should have had someone he could trust, tell them the truth, figure out a way to admit what he did, before ever speaking to the press. You wonder if he even has a close friend, someone you could confide almost anything to.

I know it is easy to become worried, given the media’s propensity for sensationalism, but he will be OK. I read here the other day that on ABC, George Stephanapolous tried to ask Jake Tapper if the president was behind pushing Weiner out. And supposedly to his credit Tapper crused that meme. We have to trust that despite the media incessant need to engage in fluff, when we have colossal issues to deal with, president Obama will methodically inform them.
Today, in a letter I sent to people at MSNBC and NBC, I told them that the our press has devolved into a giant reality show. And I think our president knows this and tries to steer away from getting caught up in their silly plot lines.

They should be aware that we are noticing and are not at all happy with the sad state of journalism standards today, how far they have fallen, how they’re failing our country.

The President Barack Obama that I’ve come to know and respect does not shy away from an interview. He knows how to handle a situation and he comes well prepared. I have no concerns that he will handle this just as he’s faced and handled many many other interruptions during his course of the People’s business.

I have written a long email to Ann Curry and informed her that I trust her journalistic principles and asked her to treat the President’s interview he has granted her with respect and dignity the office of the President requires. I also reminded her that while the president was trying to capture Bin laden the media was busy asking him to produce his BIrth Certicate and ended by reminding her that she will have time to interview reality stars and carnival backers but PBO has the whole country and the world to take care of. Fingers crossed.

Ensign is done. He had presidential ambitions which quickly dissipated when the scandal broke. That’s good enough for me because I’m sure that was pretty devastating for him. Vitter – his constituents voted for him again to represent them even after Dems went after him on his behavior during the election.

The silver lining in all this is that every single detractor who has viciously challenged or demonized this President from his US senate run for office until now has spectacularly crashed and choked on their own vices. As an African methinks President Obama has some mean protective forces slaying the dragons that cross his path. If I were his political enemies I would be quaking in my boots. The evidence of disasters for any detractor of this President is too overwhelming.

Even more pictures have surfaced on TMZ and they show Weiner in various states of undress and holding his “weiner”, the problem for him is the pictures have been confirmed to have been taken at the House of Representatives Gym and were sent to at least one woman. Stick a fork in ‘im, he’s done!
