Knowing evangelicals/fundies the way I do, I can tell you, there is a huge block of these voters who will NEVA, EVA vote for a Mormon. NEVA, EVA! They have been listening to Christian radio for years calling Mormonism a cult, saying they need to evangelize Mormons, and all sorts of other attacks on the religion. There may be some evangelicals who will determine that Obama is a greater “evil” than a Mormon (especially if someone like James Dobson can whip them up to that effect), but there will be many who will just sit the election out if someone like Romney or Huntsman (to a lesser extent, as he doesn’t seem to be as religious) is the Republican nominee. At the very least, you will not be able to count on their usual grass root support/activities that recent fundies like Bush and Palin have enjoyed. This will be the case even moreso if Romney’s religious beliefs get even a fraction of the airing out that Rev. Wright did — and knowing the biased media, a fraction is about all we can count on, but a fraction is all it would take to send heads exploding.
Of course, Romney could try to solve this problem by putting someone like Bachmann on the ticket — which would be great news for us — expect to see a 49 state win (with Utah being red). 😆 😆 😆
I can’t see the religious fundamentalists who make up the bulk of Republican primary voters ever giving the nomination to a Mormon either. The “magic underwear” or Temple garment worn by members of the LDS church and other Mormon fundamentalists has fascinated me, and I would think this issue would be troublesome to a Mormon nominee. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_garment
If President O had decided to bring 3K troops, McCain would have put out a statement saying that it’s time for ALL the troops to get out Afghanistan yesterday.
The President takes a position and the media and GOP stake the opposition postion.
What jumps out at me about this data is how low people’s comfort level with ‘Christians’ is compared to Catholics and Jews. Haven’t we only ever elected one Catholic for President? And what are the real chances of a Jewish person being elected? This data is screwy.
I’M NOT AT ALL WORRIED ABOUT PRESIDENT OBAMA WINNING THE ELECTION…I AM SAYING THAT THE RIGHT IS GOING TO TRY EVERY DIRTY TRICK IN THE BOOK TO OUST HIM. I HAVE NO FEAR THAT HE WILL NOT WIN….BUT…THE GOP IS GOING TO MAKE THIS ONE HELL OF A FIGHT!
The other thing that captures my attention comes from the Quinnipiac poll that says that 6% of people who identify as Liberals would vote for Romney! WTF?
Here is another poll that has President Obama ahead of Romney by 13 percentage points.
