100 yards?!

Steve Benen: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie created a bit of a stir this week, using a state helicopter to travel to his son’s high school baseball game, then using a state car to drive him 100 yards from the landing site to the game itself. Making matters slightly worse, the governor left half-way through the game, had the state car drive him back the 100 yards, and then took the helicopter to a meeting with wealthy Iowans who want him to run for president.

Yesterday, Christie’ office responded to calls that he reimburse the state for the costs of this excursion, announcing the governor doesn’t intend to pay a dime.

…his flap certainly isn’t doing Christie any favors. His whole message is about austerity: cutting back, making sacrifices, living with less, eliminating waste in government, etc. The use of the chopper, to put it mildly, belies the governor’s larger agenda.

….A Star Ledger editorial today concluded, “Now we know why [Christie] can’t imagine what it’s like to walk a mile in the shoes of regular New Jerseyans: He doesn’t even walk 100 yards in his own.”

Ouch.

Christie should have just blamed security concerns for the 100 yard limo ride – imagine this bugger having to run away from any potential danger. The dude looks much bigger from the side view – not a good angle for him to say the least. I thought I read he was losing weight.

However the helicopter use is the major issue. He took the chopper to his sons baseball game (ie personal use) because he needed to be back in time to meet Iowa Republicans who want him to run in 2012 (ie political use). He’d be able to get away with the personal use if he was doing State business with the later meeting. But together – that’s a scandal. Does he dig in and say he did nothing wrong or does he admit it was a mistake and reimburse the State and promise not to do it again?

Glad you posted this, Chips. And I’m going to be mean here with no apologies because the evil republicans have no respect for our brilliant President. But Governor Lard Butt really needs to get involved in the First Lady’s Let’s Move campaign. I mean look at his big fat behind? Gross.

He couldn’t walk 100 yard? Really? Seriously? Anyone that lazy about their health and appearance should not be listened to at all.

And his hypocrisy is on full display. “NJ is broke!” (lie) “Gotta cut pensions, teachers jobs, etc.” “Where’s my helicopter and limo?”

    Hippocrite!

His heart would have probably given out if he dared to walk that 100 yards in the hot sun! That’s the kind of person we want for President of the United States!

He’s such a pompous git. He never apologized for not coming back from his vacation in Disneyland when New Jersey was practically snowed under and Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, NJ was going out and doing the peoples business. Then he takes a helicopter for personal use and feels well within his rights. If a regular state worker did this…. they’d be canned in a second. By the way… who the heck can’t walk 100 yards! If one has no disabilities and can’t walk 100 yards, you need to check out FLOTUS’s Let’s Move Campaign and get some freakin help!

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. This is the funniest and best advice I’ve ever heard! OMG! Can you imagine what that interaction would look like:
        [[Riiiinnnggg]]
        Christie: Hello?
[[[polite, professional female voice]]]: Hello Gov. Christie, this is ________, calling for Mrs. Obama, she would like to speak with you.
        Christie: uhhhhhhh……Ms. Obama, really? ….ok.
[[[[[female voice]]]]: hold please while we transfer you.
        PAUSE
        Mrs. O: Hello, Gov. Christie
Christie: hello Mrs. President, uhhh, Mrs. Obama
Mrs. O: Christie, I just saw a video of you taking a $2500/hour helicopter to your son’s game, then you took a black limo that had to drive all the way from where ever it came from with a state trooper as the driver, just to pick you up and drive you 100 yards to watch your son’s game. I’m surprised you didn’t then get a gulf cart to bustle you from the car to you seat in the stands at your son’s game.
        Christie: ahhhh
Mrs. O: but you know the most interesting thing about the video is that I didn’t quite realize how much girth you had on you. I’m gonna loan you my trainer so he can ‘bail you out.’ Now, now, Christie, I know you’re not fond of bail outs, but it seems to me you really need it.
        Christie: ma’am… a bail out?
        Mrs. O: Don’t worry, Christie, if the banks and the auto industry can take it, then so can you, after all, haven’t you been talking about trimming fat? Then shouldn’t we start with yours? I’m having the WH gardeners pick some fruits and veggies, the trainer will be arriving with them soon. {{{Click}}}

The First Lady reimbursed the Fed gov’t for the ride Christie is deciding not to. And the FLOTUS can’t swim to Spain but he didn’t have to take a 100 yd walk in a state car. Lazy ass. No comparison in my opinion.

    June 2, 2011 at 10:21 am

I hope nobody gets mad at me for saying this but I thought it was a huge mistake when the First Lady flew to Spain last summer for a week. The reason she gave just didn’t fly with me;sorry.I love the First Lady to death but that was a mistake that should have never taken place.

I mean hell the President got blasted for eating arugula 🙄 and you know the Tea’s and the Rethugs are looking for any and all reasons to blast the Obama’s so we have to be very careful. If we bring this helicopter thing they will bring the trip to Spain and we won’t like it.

Not mad, Fred, but not sure I agree. Is the First Lady not entitled to a vacation? Especially when she’s not the one running the country. I mean Governor Lard went to Disney Land when his state was hit with a blizzard. That’s different to me because he is the head of his state.

        June 2, 2011 at 10:33 am

Meant to add, this is different because he’s slashed people’s jobs claiming to be fiscally responsible then he takes a helicopter to his son’s baseball game? Not even state business. Sorry, the two do not equate.

    • 18 hopefruit2
      June 2, 2011 at 10:34 am

The first lady is not the one preaching about “fiscal responsibility” and slashing state budgets to the bare bones. Christie did this helicopter trek while shouting at the top of his lungs about tightening belts. The two situations are not comparable in my opinion.

The First lady has the right to go on vacation whenever and where ever she wants. She gave up a lot so that her husband could serve this country. We are lucky to have her, she does not get paid for all that she does and it more a mental health break to get away from all the hateful bigot who attack her family.

The thing is it’s okay for the ReTHUGS to do whatever the hell they want but the Obama’s can’t do anything. The MSM and the Thugs won’t let that happen. So it bugged the hell outta me when they went on and on about that Spanish trip.

They yapped about her using the First Lady plane
they bitched about the amount of $ to fly to Spain
they moaned about the amount of SS used to protect the First Lady;Sasha and the party
they bitched about an Yves Saint Laurent top she had on and I can go on and on but I just think that considering the Obama’s are not allowed what these folks are allowed to do;the Obama’s should not have opened the window to be blasted

          June 2, 2011 at 10:56 am

Fred, it’s not the fact that he used a helicopter that people are concerned about. It’s the fact that he used a helicopter AND a state car (to prevent him from having to walk only 100 yards!) while actively preaching against waste and touting “fiscal responsibility.”

If the first lady was all over the airwaves bitching and whining about “fiscal responsibility” then I could see your point. I don’t think the Obamas should succumb in anyway shape or form to the racist blatherings of the right-wing media about what they are and aren’t allowed to do. They are duly elected to the presidency and they inherit all the benefits AND the disadvantages that come with the job.

But you Fred feed into and perpetuate that myth and disrespect by demanding that the Obamas be denied the simplest of perks due the office even while demanding and holding them to working harder than any previous president and first lady!!!

Sorry, not buying this crap you’re selling about how Mrs Obama should be pussy-footing about for fear of been attacked by the very same people who would attack her just for being alive and breathing!!!

And by the way, about you not buying her story about why she went to Spain, who the heck cares whether you bought the story or not or what you think!!!

That’s the problem. You are no different from the Teabaggers, as you unconsciously or even consciously hold the Obamas in contempt and demand they explain their every move to you and get your approval before they make them!!!

You did not not raise a raucous when just in 2008 the entire Bush family including 67 family members flew to China for the Olympics on our dime!!! And no, it was not an official trip!!!

How about ferrying the entire wedding party back and forth on airforce one for Jenna’s wedding in the thick of the economic disaster caused by their father!!! And a murmur of disaproval from anyone!!!

Laura Bush took her daughters on a 3 week safari on OUR dime and still not a word!!!

Hillary Clinton took Chelsea on several vacations around the world on our dime and spent many a weekends flying in and out of Palo Alto for four years on OUR dime while Chelsea was in Stanford!!! Not a whisper!!!

Look at all the pictures of all the private trips Hillary and Chelsea took abroad on our dime and it will blow your mind!!!

I am sick and tired of people insisting that this President and this First Lady are not even entitled to the most basic perks of this very stressful and demanding position they’ve been charged with!!! All the while demanding that they perform miracles at every turn!!!

Michelle Obama has the right to take her daughter on a freaking 4 day trip to freaking Spain – a trip I as an ordinary citizen can afford ten times over!!!

The Obama girls have every right to live their lives and enjoy it too and as they should even if the Republicans don’t think they should!!!

These young girls lives and wonderful childhood experiences, especially that lived as daughters of the President of the United States, cannot and should not be paused or short-changed for fear of incurring the wrath of some spiteful, jealous idiots who never had a problem when other kids lived and enjoyed the very same perks as children in our first family!!!

And I applaud Mrs Obama for taking her daughter on that trip and hope they get to enjoy many more!!!

                  • June 2, 2011 at 10:34 pm

“You are no different from the Teabaggers”

Eleroy, I love ya, but that’s just not fair on Fred, she is as much a Teabagger as you and me. I’ll admit – and you can shoot me down for this – I think that Spanish trip was woefully misjudged by the White House. Of course the First Lady and her daughters are entitled to their own time – and I desperately want them to have their own time – but the White House has to get the sensitivity right on these things, especially when these are hard times for most Americans. Instead of traveling to Spain, I think it would have been wiser to visit somewhere in America at that time, I just thought it was badly timed and judged, and gave way too much ammunition to the hate-filled nutjobs.

I think that was Fred’s point about Christie, before we cast stones we have to think of how ‘our own’ don’t always judge these things right.

Hey, I’m not ordering you to agree with me or Fred (!), but please, accept that Fred is a loyal supporter of the President – which she most certainly is – who was simply expressing an honest opinion.

More than anything, let’s stay civil – okay?

                    June 3, 2011 at 9:09 am

                    I agree with Eleroy.
Does anyone actually believe that the fake uproar over the trip was really about the destination? Visiting somewhere in America would still not have assuaged those determined to cast the Obamas in bad light! It’d have still been spun negatively! The last time the First Lady took her daughters to Los Angeles, there were complaints that they held up traffic! Staying home at the White House elicits complaints aboout how much they are costing taxpayers in food!
There are those indeed who will not be satisfied even if the Obamas commuted to D.C from Chicago on a commercial flight flying coach! These are the same people that raise hell at every move the Obamas make! No amount of sensitivity by the WH will make the complainers happy.
Short of relinquishing the presidency and moving to Kenya, there is nothing the Obamas will and can do that will not be spun negatively!
How sad that even supporters bought into the optics argument and will have the Obamas live out their time in the presidency in deference to the silly whims of those who will always find fault!
Los Angeles by the way is a longer plane ride from D.C than is Spain and better still, nobody complained about traffic hold-ups or leaked details of what the First Lady and Sasha had at every meal (something they’ve had to contend with everywhere they’ve travelled to in the States!)
I too part ways with those who want to help shove the Obamas into this corner where they are denied not only the respect of the office but the conveniences that were built into the support structure of the presidency in anticipation of the restrictions and stress it brings.

I too choose to stand up for the First Lady’s right to enjoy a rejuvenating and well-deserved short getaway with her daughter and a few friends to a friendly and drama-free place! Heck, if the U.K will in the midst of serious austerity measures, support and celebrate a multi million dollar wedding of the queen’s grandson, our hard working, unpaid First Lady should be able to enjoy a loong stressfree weekend that she’s paying for!

I think the real response to Fred, is NOT a defense of the First Lady’s trip, she has the right to go anywhere she wants. The question is, why is Fred bringing this up Now? Where did that come from? Why did you pull that year old non-controversy out of the hat? Nobody has talked about it in months.

What in the World does the First Lady’s long ago trip have to do with this situation????

This almost seems like a backhanded defense of Christie’s stupid use of a police chopper to get to a game, and then a car to drive 100 yards.

Suppose that helicopter had been needed for an emergency? AND, he ended up leaving the game early. Why go at all? I know for a fact, that kids would much prefer that their parents come LATE to a game, and be there at the end to share the joy of a win, or the pain of a loss, then for them to come early or on time, and leave EARLY. What’s the point?

Anyhow, I returned to that person and apologized for my instant reaction, so I admit I am not always so magnanimous..LOL. But, it would take a lot for me to call someone a troll, wherein that person would have had to demonstrate repeated condescension toward PBO. We, like PBO, have battle scars and don’t suffer fools lightly. But we all have to stay strong in the face of adversity from real haters.

Thank you for that EDP, I was just about to add that. Fred has always been a consistent and vociferous supporter of the president and his wife. Fred has the right to her opinion and by the very nature of this site is allowed to air it. If you disagree with what anyone says, it’s okay to voice that also, but randomly calling people who have long been members of this site “trolls” is not polite and it isn’t who we are supposed to be. Fred is right, she loves her brother, but if she has an opinion that is contrary to something he does or says, she has the right as an individual and as someone who loves him, to let it be known. People, please, the president and his supporters get enough bashing on the outside world, that’s not what this place- TOD- is supposed to be. We are all different people from all different walks of life, with all different opinions. The greatest and best thing we have in common is PBO and his wonderful family. Let’s not divide each other, the outside world is doing enough of that.

WASHINGTON–President Obama’s top fund-raisers, meeting in Chicago on Wednesday were asked by Obama campaign manager Jim Messina to raise $60 million for the Obama 2012 re-elect and the Democratic Party by the end of June, I’ve been told.

The $60 million June 30 second quarter goal–part of a power point presentation to members of the Obama 2012/Democratic National Committee National Finance Committee–is equal to the amount raised during the comparable time by the 2004 Bush/Cheney campaign and the Republican National Committee.

Whatever the comparison, members of the NFC–Obama’s major bundlers–people who use their extensive personal networks to convince others to make campaign donations–were huddling at the Hyatt Regency on Wacker Dr. to map strategy to raise what Messina has said was “north of $750 million” for the 2012 re-election campaign.

Obama and First Lady Michelle, I’ve learned, will hit the fund-raising trail again this month in a quest to raise big money early on for the Obama 2012 re-elect and the DNC.

Mrs. Obama headlines fundraisers in California–Pasadena and the Bay Area on June 13.

Obama has fund-raisers June 13 in Miami; June 20 in Washington aimed at Jewish donors, June 23 in New York City for gay and lesbian contributors and June 30 in Philadelphia.

There is no coparison between this stunt of Christie’s and the First Lady’s vacation. He is a hypocrite with his austerity preaching, and people should know it.

All I’m going to say about his weight is, if this was a woman politican who looks like Christie, can you just imagine what she would be going through. It’s the old double standard, one thing for men and a something else for womam

All the ‘eloquent’ words I was going to use have already been used – fat azz, buffoon etc. Can’t believe he took a car for a ride of 100 yards.
