From a historical perspective this visit to Moneygall is quite an interesting coda to President Obamaโ€™s genealogical journey. As a young man he set out on his own in 1988 to Kenya to retrace his fatherโ€™s roots, which ended in that powerful tear-filled meditation on his fatherโ€™s grave in Kogelo, Kenya (see Dreams from My Father). He did that when he was but a young man not yet world famous, still feeling his way around this complex world and trying to untangle his spiderweb-like roots scattered all over a global landscape.

Today he is in Moneygall out of happenstance which his rising fame in 2007 enabled others to do the maternal genealogical tracing for him. For a man who talked about how his own maternal family web was smaller compared to Michelleโ€™s, now can happily and officially revise that part of his story. I am eagerly awaiting his second autobiography when this presidential gig is over. It will be very enlightening, just as his first one is.

I can remember when the President was first campaigning and the Obama site would do live updates of events such as this. They would show the crowds and the long lines of people waiting to see then Senator Obama. That site is doing this President a big disservice by just ignoring events such as this.

They built that movement for change by showing the excitement of that 2008 campaign in real time. Now that place doesn’t even bother anymore. It is such a disappointment IMO.

GAH. I’m more than a little freaked out by the total lack of information there. It’s astonishing and truly sad. There’s no mention of the trip, no photos of the day or a link to watch any of it. Just a thread from last night. It’s so utterly lame. WTH?

        May 23, 2011 at 12:19 pm

Meta, I am beyond astonished with that place. I keep waiting for it to get better but I think that this is as good as it will get. So sad!

Remember the Germany trip? We had all day updates and a live feed. Today we get Nothing, Nada. Chips has had over 700 comments since they landed in Ireland and the Presidents very own website has barely had 100 with very little discussion about the events in Ireland.

My digust is off the charts. Thank goodness for sites like this and BWD.

I hear you loud and clear. It’s almost getting worse rather than better. Today I had to log in 4 different times just to post 2 comments. I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. When I met with my local OFA organizer a couple of days ago, I mentioned the frustration. She said to send her an email and she would get it to Jeremy Bird. I don’t even know if I should bother.

The crazy thing is M that they had a fantastic site. The 2008 website was the envy of all the campaigns. Their blog was the best blog out there for like minded people supporting the President. This new site is simply awful.

OFA needs to hear what you think, Donna. I know they are focused on getting organized in all 50 states, but this is important too. I didn’t know about OFA when he was running and didn’t realize they did that.

The RTE coverage is wonderful! They were so appreciative of the President and Michelle in Moneygall. And his cousin Henry and POTUS have so many similarities. Standing next to each other their body builds are similar, shape of the ears, nose, cheekbones and head — that tall, lanky build. Henry looked so happy. It was wonderful to hear the RTE coverage as they talked about how affectionate the Obamas were with people, how relaxed and friendly they are. That was great!

It was absolutely lovely and refreshing indeed Susan…
I’m sending them an e-mail to thank them for helping us enjoy and for covering this extraordinary home coming so professionally without the snark, rudeness and backhanded compliments that is now the hallmark of ‘journalism’…

Chi, that’s a wonderful idea! I will too. I found it so interesting to look at him through their eyes and to see them find the same qualities that I see — how loving he and Michelle are, how relaxed and caring about people. I’ll e-mail them, too.

I couldn’t believe that msnbc had a split screen of “Obama in Dublin” alongside Pawlenty’s big-no-one-cares announcement, as if those 2 things deserved equal billing. Maybe they were going for an “opposites” motif there today. Our media could learn a thing or 2 by the honest coverage at RTE, which appears uninterested in stirring up controversy for controversy’s sake.

Our media is too busy furiously finding just the right candidate to prop up on behalf of the republican party…

The despair and handwringing over not finding a strong enough candidate to beat President Obama is driving them insane…

At this point the media is pretty much head hunting, training and making guarantees on behalf of the republican party…

I love Kenny’s words….”whether you’re Irish by birth, by marriage, or by desire….” The world is becoming more inclusive, more diverse – Our tapestry is richer and more colorful – hence more vibrant. Sometimes it’s incredibly easy to pay so much attention to the pundits, the malicious, the hateful, the short-sighted, the ignorant because they often speak the loudest, and their words pierce the heart and mind. Yet, the 44th President’s legacy is secure – his accomplishments are impressive, what moves me most is heart – his mind – he very presence brings out the best. Despite the live coverage in Ireland, and some of the reporters were less than respectful, the people have spoken, their love for him is evident, they see what we all see – it’s so precious…

Zizi, he talked of our interconnectedness- the Irish and Americans.. all we’ve accomplished together- all of the Irish throughout American history.. it was truly a speech of love and respect I think to his roots and to the specialness of the Irish throughout the world and their own amazing history. he is a lovely man our President.

My own great-grandmother came from Ireland and I felt very touched by all that he said, I wish my grandfather was still alive to have heard and seen this today.

I then went to our local news for updates on possible severe weather. The crowd was great! They adore him. Maureen Dowd is the epitome of the D.C. Village Idiot. She has no idea what’s going on in this country and how people feel about this President. She cannot think at all outside of the box. Now she’s saying that he’s been unhappy as President and doesn’t know how to greet people. All evidence points to this as totally untrue, but it doesn’t matter. If the village idiot says he’s aloof, then it doesn’t matter that he’s seen pretty much every day hugging real Americans. He is aloof and that is all.

OT: Conservative talk radio — Limbaugh and Hannity (hah) ratings going down.

“Right-wing talk radio may have worn out its welcome, at least for now,” reports Crain’s New York Business.

A new Arbitron report shows Rush Limbaugh’s ratings down 33% from a year ago and Sean Hannitty down 28% over the same time period. Meanwhile, more centrist personalities — Don Imus in the morning and John Batchelor at night — were both up from a year earlier.

I’ve been watching the RTE after speech coverage. One interesting thing — one of the members of the Irish government was talking about renewing an Irish network they had in America. This was with other talk that they will be able to use this visit and build on it — to build trade and tourists. They seemed to feel this would help them with their They seemed to feel strengthened to assist others in the world.

They said there was 30,000 in the speaking area in Dublin with a total of 100,000 in the speaking area and streets around.

I thought his speech was so inspiring. I had tears in my eyes several times. The people of Moneygall, especially his cousin Henry the 8th — were adorable!

Thanks for hosting the live blogs, Chipsticks!

The Irish people are a warm and loving people. They love our President as much as we here in the States. This has been a fantastic day.

President Obama is a once in a lifetime leader. We are so fortunate that he is President of the United States and the leader of the free world at this turbulent time in our history. May God continue to Bless him as his works to solve the many problems facing the country and the world.

That last photo of the woman touching the President’s cheeks says it all: He is loved so much. No matter how the haters try, they can do nothing about that.

Chipsticks, you have been outstanding as usual. Thank you so much for allowing us to share in this wonderful visit with our beloved President.

SS looked mighty uncomfortable. But on the RTE, the reporters said that SS couldn’t belive the warmth the Obamas were extending and the warmth they got back in return. They also said that SS said that that Obamas are the real deal.

I think the SS guys guarding the Obama family really like and respect them. And it’s reciprocal.

The media stated that only 25,000 showed up to hear our President speech compared to Clinton which they’re stated he had over 250,000. I guess my eyes fooled me because it look like over 100,000.

I just heard that too! It is clear to the eye more than 25,000 showed up. Somebody has it in for President for this trip. It is so foolish to be so disrespectful of the President especially when he is on foreign soil. There are some very nervous people at there.

      • May 23, 2011 at 9:04 pm

Hi Betty, I’ve heard official crowd estimates today ranging from 80,000 to 100,000. That would be roughly the same for Pres Clinton’s speech 15 years ago, it’s not possible for a bigger crowd to fit in to that area – you saw today, it was full, the police wouldn’t allow any more people in!

I heard that there was another area that had a number of people in addition to the capacity crowd there. Lawrence O’Donnell said 30k. ๐Ÿ™‚

((((((((CHIPSTICKS)))))))))) I can’t thank you enough…and there aren’t any more words….that haven’t been said here…….You are simply the best… and thanks to all of you here for making this place a “Home”.

As excited as I was today, I admit i was a bit taken by the lack of media coverage of this historic event.
I am beginning to think that all the media outlets have a marching orders…to NOT cover anything that shows our President in positive form…or how much he’s loved. I am stunned, the fear of showing the love he gets from other countries, has the media in pieces…. They don’t want to show the american public all the lies they report due to the fact, it doesn’t go with their negative narrative.

They should be ashamed for the disservice…and lack of journalism for the millions of Irish Americans….ashamed for not letting our children be part of history…

We need to voice our discomfort with every outlet…and email the Maureen Dowed..and have their credentials taken away.
What the hell were they doing for a week in Ireland? to report or BS?

Sorry for my rant……Other than that….IT WAS A MAGNIFICENT DAY!!!!!!!

God Bless America and Ireland…..and Chip:-)

Boy I’m so glad I found this site! I started a new job on May 2nd and it’s been crazy so I haven’t been able to get my daily does of Barack and his speeches, travels, etc. I couldn’t fully enjoy the elimination of Bin Laden due to the diligence of this president, NOT the previous! And the Ireland trip as well, I haven’t been able to thoroughly enjoy it because in my limited free time, I can’t seem to find a source that has all the content in one place. And it’s a shame.

It’s a shame because Obama’s speech in College Green, Dublin, will go down in history as one of the greatest speeches not just by an American President, but by any world leader in the past few centuries. It’s up there with the Kennedy “Ich bin ein berliner” speech. The right likes to harp on the “bring down the wall” speech but for sheer poetic brilliance, timing of the words, tone and cadence of the voice, for inspiration during difficult times, THIS will be hard to beat! It was a brilliantly delivered speech all through but then the jewel in the crown was the “Is feidir Linn, Yes We Can, Yes We Can, Is feidir Linn” part(with the 2nd yes we can delivered with an awe inspiring feat of voice modulation by this once in a century Speaker and world leader).

Yet, there are countless Americans who don’t even know about this masterpiece, who go about their daily lives revelling in the stupid pomp and foolishness of Sarah’s latest antics – the Paul Revere history rewrite being the most recent! If parents are really serious about teaching their kids to be leaders, they should set everything aside and listen to this Dublin speech with their kids and let them realize the importance of being able to express oneself articulately and the power of education and knowledge. Not drink beer and watch a basketball game or go on a mommy’s night out romp. End of my rant.

To the original point of my post, it is some consolation that atleast there are sites such as this where a great and wonderful speech is celebrated and talked about. Kudos to the folks that run this site and to those that post here! In keeping with the Irish spirit, Go raibh maith agaibh. Thank you all!

    – roger
