gremlins!

Thanks to everyone who got in touch to let me know you’re having problems with the site – since yesterday it’s been weirdly glitchy for some of you, eg the photo and title aren’t showing up in the banner on top and something has gone wrong with the ‘Latest Comments’ section in the sidebar too.

I can’t figure out what the problem is (but I’m working on it!) – I’m using Firefox and everything looks okay, so I’m wondering if it’s an issue with Internet Explorer? Anyone who is having these problems, could you let me know in the comments what browser you’re using? Thank you!

    Morning Chip…
I use IE8 and I first noticed this problem when I logged in yesterday morning. 😦

Its not a real big issue because I can still participate but it is glitchy.

    • May 17, 2011 at 8:28 am

Thanks Donna, that’s a couple of IE8 users so far who are having trouble, I’ll see what the others tell me so I can narrow it down to IE8 and check it out.

It is working well today though! Thank you…

Internet Explorer is working for me, but Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are NOT working properly.

Thanks JER, that makes it even more mysterious! Any experts out there? Help!

        Not an expert

but it could/may be that the computers have a virus..and based on individual security/firewalls, it shows up most frequently on IE…

IE/Mircosoft is sooo prone to viruses which is why I ended up going with a Mac…no virus to worry about ever!

Also Disqus is known to be bipolar on several other sites as well.

    Good morning, Chips!

The banner disappeared on me for only a brief second yesterday but all else was fine. I’m on MacBook Pro with Safari 5.0.5.

I use Internet Explorer…it’s fine. Thanks for your care and hard work.

I use Google Chrome at home on both my laptop and desktop. I use Internet Explorer at work. At this moment I am using my laptop, and it is glitchy. I just tried using Internet Explorer on my laptop and it is glitchy.

The only place where this site has worked well for me in the last few days is at work — using Internet Explorer. We just had a new Microsoft Windows operating system installed there; maybe that is the issue?

    • May 17, 2011 at 10:07 am

Thanks so much for the info PoliticalJunkessa, that rules out IE being the problem. I’m even more mystified now!

I just tried using Firefox on my laptop — still glitchy. Only thing I can think of is the different operating system, or perhaps server….I dunno :-(.

Additionally, I go to BWD’s site, which I believe is also on wordpress, but I’m not having any issues with that page…only this one :-(.

        Can we rule out IE?

Perhaps it is the security system used in her work environment that the virus can’t penetrate IE there?

  12. May 17, 2011 at 10:28 am

No problems for me using Internet Explorer either.

    Good morning, Ms. Chipsticks,

I use Google Chrome and/or Firefox. On both, the Head title for the site is blank.

On topic – I love this site and the people in it. This is truly a family atmosphere – you and BWD are such great loving and welcoming hostesses and for that, I thank you!!

Good morning Chipsticks, I use Firefox. Refreshing your site and being able to leave a comment were very slow and difficult yesterday. It was so slow last night that I shut down early evening. This morning my Yahoo home page was slow opening and your site was slow. Maybe the storm is passing over. Good luck in remedying the situation.

I usually use Google Chrome and have no problems. I do have IE 8 and just opened it to see — no problems with it either.
However, I get automatic updates for both and there are times with IE 8 when something is not in sync after an update and it takes some other update, like Adobe Flash, to straighten it out. My operating system is Windows XP.

I’ve never used WordPress, but their support and the WordPress Forum always looked so good to me. It’s definitely a good idea to get information from those having a problem. Good luck to all of you!

    • May 17, 2011 at 11:24 am

Thanks for that Suzanne. I’ve been searching the WordPress forums/support to see if others are having browser trouble, haven’t found anything yet but will keep looking. Thanks again for the info.

I had another thought. It could be the security systems these folks are using. I use AVG Free and get updates all day long. Somewhere along the line I ended up with a security setting that stopped some of the advertisements on some sites. I thought that was a plus, but don’t know how it happened.

In a comment above PoliticJunkessa used IE at work and it was fine there, but not at home — employers usually have excellent firewalls and security software for their networks. I don’t know that it would necessarily be a virus anywhere. AVG is good software and I haven’t gotten any alerts, but it could be common security software for others having problems.

You might leave a message on the WordPress Forum and get feedback from others. They might at least be able to tell you what to ask your visitors.

It will probably pass as everything comes into sync, but if not, there are folks at the WordPress Forums that love to solve problems like this. Good luck!

In Firefox I have my visibility settings overriding stuff and didn’t even know you had a sidebar because your type font is so small I have to Ctrl + so many times to read it that the sidebar is off the screen. I looked at it in chrome and it’s fine.

    • May 17, 2011 at 11:48 am

Thanks Tien. It gets weirder -I use the same font size in the sidebar as I do in the posts!

        Chips,

i think what she is saying is that once she enlarges font to read the diary, the larger font pushes the side bar off the screen, not that the font is different in the side bar, it just can’t be viewed simultaneously once you increase the diary to a font that is viewable for her.

IOW’s she would have to scroll left to right to view the sidebar.

          May 17, 2011 at 2:59 pm

My font sizes are different then what they use to be without my enlarging anything.

that was in response to TienLe..who mentioned she increases font size and then sidebar is not on screen.

Chips, I have IE8 and can’t see your banner at the top. There is a gray/white block at the right that has some comments in it. It just kinda hangs there, lol. It’s over latest comments section. Otherwise, it’s beautiful!

    Chipsticks,
I am still having issues. I have Windows Vista and use IE. I tried it on my work computer (also IE) and it looks the same as my home computer. (no header, no PBO at the top, strange view of the latest comments on the sidebar) I can get into the site. I can see the pictures, videos and comments. I guess it’s good to look into this now. Just in case those of us that are having problems, suddenly cannot access the site. You’ll know what happened to us. πŸ˜‰

  23. May 17, 2011 at 6:19 pm

I’ve read all the comments about viewing trouble and thought I’d better mention that I have no trouble whatsoever with Firefox or Seamonkey — for what it’s worth.

(I use Seamonkey for my site because Firefox doesn’t have a composer page.)

I’m on IE8- and as I posted earlier, not having problems today and I don’t recall any yesterday.. however I do frequently have trouble viewing the videos, they start, stop etc.. and that has been an ongoing problem for me here.

I think it might have something to do with the antivirus that people are using. I have Microsoft Security Essentials at work and I’m having problems with the site on both Firefox 4.0 and IE 8. Using McAfee at home – no problems at this point. The antivirus is the only major difference between the two machines that might cause this global effect.
