“we need a big hurray and lots of applause (of course)”

Justin Elliott (Salon): If the release of President Obama’s birth certificate last month was the denouement of the birther saga, the release of Terrence Lakin from prison will be its bizarre coda. Lakin is the veteran Army doctor who refused orders to redeploy to Afghanistan because he believed Obama was born abroad, not a legitimate president, and therefore that military orders were invalid.

Last December, Lakin … was dismissed from the Army and sentenced to six months in prison … In what promises to be one of the stranger political spectacles of the year, a homecoming event is planned Saturday at the Southwest Airlines baggage claim area of Baltimore Washington International Airport. The website set up to support Lakin … suggests:

All we ask you to do is bring a home-made poster that says, “Welcome Home Terry.” or “Thank You Terry” or any appropriate messages about the issue. Bring a small US flag if you have one. We will text the coordinators when we deplane so you can all get ready to greet Terry as he descends on the escalator to baggage claim. We need a big hurray and lots of applause (of course). He may say a few words…

Unlike the folks over at WorldNetDaily, who have been enriched by years of pumping up birtherism, Lakin’s commitment to the conspiracy both torpedoed his career and put his family in financial peril. His website notes: “Please consider making a special gift at this critical time. We have been able to provide for the family’s monthly expenses, but contributions have dropped off since the release of the proposed birth document by the Obama administration.”

Can anyone imagine a more tragic story emerging from the birther carnival?

“Tragic” isn’t the word I’d use here. Methinks the racist bigot has got what he deserved.

      Yes!

It is sheer chutzpah to request donations for someone who clearly violated the orders of Commander in Chief after signing up and pledging to obey.

Please. He needs to go somewhere and sit down and be grateful that the vast majority of employers will not continue to shun him.

He is a disgrace to the nation and the uniform we provided him!

Hi Proud, I thought it was a weird word for the writer to use – tragic?! I understand his point that the likes of WorldNetDaily have become rich through pushing this hatred, unlike the fools who gave them all those hits, but this Lakin guy is hardly a child, he knew exactly what he was doing and is now paying for his racism. Tragic? Na, I’d say ‘richly deserved’!

Hey, I just got up and ran to the computer to see what Chipsticks was sharing, and I immediately vomited.

The world is a sick place. I sometimes loose my concept of humanity. Next thing you know he will sue the government for putting him in prison, and he will demand an apology from Obama.

Can someone makes these horrible people go away?

    • May 13, 2011 at 11:47 am

“since the release of the PROPOSED birth document by the Obama administration …?”

I think this poor sap meant SUPPOSED birth document in that snarky sentence.

At the time of this doctor’s AWOL gambit, I wondered if he just didn’t want to be killed in that no-man’s land and seized upon the birther issue to cover it up. I’m still not sure that it wasn’t the case.

What a life. We’re living in a country trying desperately to dig ourselves out of a recession that far right-wing Republicans have dug for us since Ronald Reagan and these same vicious-greedy-corrupt-hypocritical-far-right Republicans are trying their best to keep throwing dirt back into the hole.

This isn’t politics, this is a neanderthal free-for-all.

        May 13, 2011 at 12:00 pm

That doctor went AWOL cause he was likely just plain scared. Multiple deployments are almost as mentally abusive as TBI, the doc likely simply couldn’t take anymore…

and the birth certificate was as good as issue as any to hide behind.

If he hadn’t backed it up with the racist comments, and basically committed treason – I might believe that. I believe that the troops have an option when they are deployed, and there was no need for him to go as far as he did.

Well Chipsticks you raised $1000 for President Obama re-election. Okay what can we raise for this guy and his family. Let’s search our heart and do what we can to help. I’ll be the first to make a donation, I will start off with one cent. Who want to match my offer? I’m sure in a day or two we could have about a nickle to donate to this guy and his family. And when we send him that nickle, make sure he knows that we sent that amount because we couldn’t care less that he and his family are struggling. He was the man of the house,he ought to have put his family first instead of his racists attitude.

That’s all I got for this guy, and a sincere hope that he has learned something of value and will find a way to incorporate it going forward. At a minimum a sense of regret and humility. Do you suppose he could muster a public apology?

      Ummmm, perhaps not?

The GOP is too wily and loose with facts. Theire story will likely be that this was an honorable soldier who stood up to fight for his country and exercised his rights under the constitution and ended up in jail all because Obama took so long to do the right thing and show his birth certificate!

It will be all Obama’s fault, cause he knew all along and simply refused to share it with the public and avoid this whole unnecessary polarizing issue that good strong clean law-abiding citizens and servicemen couldn’t help but believe will be the spin they put on it!!

They will start a new pitch to help this jerk and smear Obama.

    • 38 Theo67
      May 13, 2011 at 4:32 pm

In the President’s book, “Dreams from my Father”, he tells a story about an elderly white woman who lived in his grandmother’s building when he was a teenager. One day, when he was coming home, he got in the elevator with her. She ran out of the elevator and ran to the landlord’s office, claiming that Barack Obama was following her. When she was told that he actually lived in the building, she refused to apologize. He also tells the story of a tennis coach who told him not to touch the tournament schedules that were pinned up, in case his color rubbed off on them. When challenged, the coach told him he wasn’t able to take a joke, and he didn’t apologize.

I don’t think the President is waiting for an apology from these sorry people. He’s met their kind before.

Yes Theo, we know our POTUS is not waiting for anything (our “little engine that could” potus just keeps on going forward) but the correct thing for the former army Dr. and others (including Donald Trump) to do is to apologize. I honestly feel like many people got caught up in the hyper GOP propaganda but I would hope in time they realize how disgraceful they behaved and do the correct thing.

To add to that good news, I was watching The Early Show this morning and Erica was interviewing the pregnant woman from the CBS Townhall with President Obama. The woman told POTUS that she is a govt. worker who was working at the National Zoo, but got laid off because she is considered non essential. She is also 7 months pregnant and she and her husband are building their dream home.. but now she’s super worried and stressed out. POTUS asked for her info and told her he would do something about her problem. Yesterday morning The White House Deputy Chief of Staff called her and told her POTUS informed him of her problem. He obtained her CV and made an appointment for her to meet with the White House Personnel Office so they can have an interview with her and try to find a job in the private sector or government that would make use of her Public Relations degree and experience. I just thought wow… POTUS reminds everyone everyday what a decent, kind, warm, and, honorable man he is. And then I thought…. lady, now that he’s helped you.. you’d better vote for him and spread the word to family and friends. 😀

That is awesome, it is my belief that this is who this man is, our President.. which is why I take it personally when he gets slighted, lied about and attacked. He’s trying to help us all, and if he has to do it one person at a time- then by gosh he will. I will do my best to pass this story everywhere. Thanks UT Austin Liberal for informing us.

        • 46 Theo67
          May 13, 2011 at 4:36 pm

He mentioned in one interview or speech that when he hears these stories, he wishes he was a case worker and could just roll up his sleeves and start helping people, although he knows that’s impractical. I hope more people don’t expect the President to personally solve their problems. I can understand that a woman who is seven months pregnant with a high-risk pregnancy is a special case, but the President can’t solve every individual problem. And he warned everyone that things would get tougher under Republicans if we gave them the keys back.

          He’s simply amazing.

Maybe I can tell my grocery store story here. Seems to fit with the theme. So I ran into a guy in our rural rural Republican town at the store and I asked him what he thought of the OBL killing and he told me that the President didn’t deserve any credit for it, emphasizing that it was a Seal mission that accomplished it. Then he told me that he doesn’t recognize the President as the Commander in Chief because he hasn’t served in the military. Then I gently reminded him that the country has a civilian government on purpose but he wasn’t impressed. I specifically brought OBL up to this guy because this gentleman and I have had friendly conversations where I support the President and he just interjects the Fox talking points. Its always been cordial (we are hopelessly Midwestern). I purposefully brought it up because I thought he would finally have to give the President some credit if it was something like this. This guy is a Vietnam Vet who never talks about much else.

Now that was frustrating but far worse was the talk I had with a left leaning friend in our community who I know very well. He has decided that the only reason the President had for going after OBL was as a cheap political ploy. Not the victory lap issue, no. Going after OBL at all. Why? Not because my friend has a problem with killing OBL instead of capturing him and holding a trial but, get this, OBL was probably not responsible for 9-11. My friend likes Noam Chomsky a lot and I guess Chomsky has come out as a truther and doesn’t think OBL was responsible.

Both of these people registered that I was turned off and disgusted with their opinions and neither one of them has ever asked me not to hold their feelings against them before. I am usually not as obvious in my reactions I guess.

All I can say is where are the straight jackets when you need them.

I’m with you cuphalffull! I have had two similar occurrences like that that: one being someone saying PBO shouldn’t get credit cause it was the Seal team and not PBO and another friend being upset that OBL was killed. Seriously…? What planet am I on? I like what PBO said during the 60 minutes interview (which was along the lines of this/not an exact quote) “they should have their heads examined!”

I am happy that the rest of us do not think like your acquaintances. Its a shame these are the sort of people MSM has bombarded us with over the last several years and unfortunate that you are surrounded by folks like that.

Here is a recent story that gives me hope. Kinda prove you can’t judge a party by their name. Kudos to the people that brought this to the attention of their local news. Tea party candidate calls “Obama a Sambo and Nancy Pelosi a Bimbo.”

      Candidate’s ‘joke’ offends TEA PARTIERS!!!
      by Ry Rivard
      Daily Mail Capitol Reporter
      Advertiser

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The leaders of an Eastern Panhandle Tea Party group are claiming former state lawmaker and current GOP gubernatorial candidate Larry Faircloth made a racist and sexist remark about President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Terry and Larrice Craver, the co-founders of We the People of Hampshire County, said the group hosted a candidate forum April 29 in Romney that three GOP candidates attended.

“While Mr. Faircloth was giving his opening comments, he chose to tell a racist, sexist ‘Joke,'” the couple said in a Monday email obtained by the Daily Mail. “This offended several people, some laughed, most gasped, and one man stood up and walked out and made the statement ‘You’re all nothing but a bunch of bigots’ on his way out the door.”
Faircloth referred to Pelosi as a “bimbo.”

“Is she not one?” Faircloth said in a Tuesday evening telephone interview. “I mean, a lot of people think she is a bimbo; that’s why they replaced Congress with Republicans, and they removed her as speaker. I don’t find that as anything different than a political poke at her.”

He also referred to Obama as a “Sambo,” a term many consider racist. It was meant to be a joke, and if they took it different, I told the people there that I apologized,” Faircloth said.

He added, “We’ve been tiptoeing around the president.”

Faircloth said he had heard the joke earlier that day from a poll worker.

The Cravers said they first asked Faircloth to make a public apology but he refused. Finally, they said they sent the email Monday to other tea party groups across the state.

Lakin:From martyr to cautionary tale in the blink of an eye.

  17. 57 Twinx
    May 14, 2011 at 6:59 am

Some facts about Lakin that his birfoon brethren gloss over.

He claimed without knowing if the President was born in Hawaii, he couldn’t know if his orders to deploy were legal.

FACT. He was counselled numerous times both verbally and in writing that his orders *were* legal, and warned of exactly what the consequences would be if he continued on his chosen path. He consciously chose to follow the advice of his civilian birther lawyer, rather than his USMJ lawyer.

Soldiers who are going to be deployed are entitled to pre-deployment leave.

Fact: Lakin took pre-deployment leave *after* he had already stated he was going to refuse the order to deploy on a YT video made with the aid of his birther lawyer.

It can take weeks/months of preparation for a team of medics and their assosiciates to train together before deployment.

Fact: The first of the two Medics (Major Dobson) who each had to deploy out of turn to ‘cover’ for Lakin testified at Lakin’s Court Martial that he had to deploy at short notice, and because he did not have time to train with the team Lakin should have been with, he was less equipped to deal with a mass casualty event that occurred in Afghanistan 2 days after arriving. Lakin’s actions negatively impacted on his (then) comrades care in the field.

Major Dobson’s wife (also military) testified that because of his out of turn deployment, he was unable to attend the ceromony at which she received her Bronze Star, & she had found it difficult to prepare their young son for his father’s unexpectedly sudden departure.

Fact: Lakin blew off his Brigade Commander, Col. Roberts (one of only two Medal of Honor recipients currently on active duty: a genuine war hero) who was concerned he might be suffering from PTSD or some other mental health issue) when he requested a meeting. Lakin’s lawyer told Col Roberts ‘you’ve had your chance’. To his small credit, Lakin exhibited some degree of shame and remorse for this comment made by his representative.

Fact: Lakin testified under oath (and apparently in the excruciating detail required by USMJ in order to accept his ‘guilty’ plea) that he *knew* his orders were legal when he chose to disobey them.
