CBS: In an interview with Steve Kroft for this Sunday’s “60 Minutes” conduced today, President Obama said he won’t release post-mortem images of Osama bin Laden taken to prove his death.

“It is important to make sure that very graphic photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around as an incitement to additional violence or as a propaganda tool,” said the president. “We don’t trot out this stuff as trophies. The fact of the matter is, this is somebody who was deserving of the justice that he received.”

The president said he had discussed the issue with his intelligence team, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and that they agree with the decision…

In explaining his choice not to release the photo, Mr. Obama said that “we don’t need to spike the football.” He said that “given the graphic nature of the photo it would create national security risk.”

The president told Kroft he saw the photos following the raid on the compound and knew that bin Laden had been killed. “We discussed this internally,” he said. “Keep in mind, we are absolutely certain that this was him. We’ve done DNA sampling and testing. And so there is no doubt that we killed Osama bin Laden.”

When Kroft noted that there are people in Pakistan and elsewhere who believe bin Laden is still alive, the president said “we we monitoring worldwide reaction.” “There is no doubt that Osama bin Laden is dead,” he said. “Certainly there is no doubt among al Qaeda members that he is dead. So we don’t think that a photograph in an of itself is going to make any difference.”

There are going to be some folks who deny it,” he added. “The fact of the matter is, you will not see bin Laden walking on this earth again.”

***

Thrilled with this decision, I think it’s the right one. Whatever the President decided here….. damned if he did, damned if he didn’t. If the photo was released of bin Laden with half his skull missing it would have further enraged his supporters …. while others (conspiracy nuts) would have dismissed it as a fake. Now the same nuts will conclude bin Laden isn’t dead. What can you do? Nothing. But decency won out.

***

Update – Steve Benen: ….I don’t have especially strong opinions on this, but on balance, this strikes me as the right call. There are conspiracy theorists who’ll continue to demand proof, but the funny thing about conspiracy theorists is that no level of proof is ever enough. They’d very likely say the photographs were faked, just like the moon landing and the president birth certificate.

And given the potential risks associated with the dissemination of the photos, Obama’s call seems entirely reasonable.

Of course, this is not to say the photos won’t leak anyway. Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee have reportedly seen them, and one assumes Intelligence Committee members will soon follow, if this hasn’t already happened. It only takes one staffer with brief access to send the image to a worldwide audience. But so long as the president has a choice, I think he’s making the right one.

Bolstering this judgment, Sarah Palin today argued that releasing the photo would serve as a “warning to others seeking America’s destruction.” She went on criticize “pussy-footing around”.

For what it’s worth, I find it hard to imagine dissemination of the images would discourage terrorists, and it’s ludicrous on its face to suggest those who just killed bin Laden are guilty of “pussy-footing” around.

I agree – there is NO benefit, other than gratuitous need to gloat over the death of someone who deserves no further attention.

He was evil and a nutcase, but there’s nothing to be gained by putting out his photo.

Once again the President does what he does best, assess the situation, weigh the pros and cons, and makes the best decision possible.

So for ALL THOSE MORONS who claim that the President is lying about OBL being dead, are they ALSO CLAIMING that the Naval Commanders, all the brave and capable men of Seal Team 6 are ALL LYING??

Is that REALLY what they want to imply???

Because if so, I dare them to go up to a Military service member and tell them they are Liars!

I might be wrong, pb, but I can’t help but wonder whether demanding the photos be released to the public was part of a plan by the rw to cause further problems in countries where American troops are stationed. We already know that the rw has no respect for Muslims or our troops, so their supporters and leaders couldn’t care less about the impact of these photos on either group. The reason I think this has to do with the fact that they have sought to undermine everything PBO has done since he took office. If any problems(s) arose as a result of the release of these photos, the rw would be first in line to use it against PBO and to use it in their 2012 presidential campaign ads. After watching them in action for almost 40 years, I don’t trust them one teeny, tiny, minuscule bit!

Once again, the pitch-perfect decision. Why glorify death in any way? Why show children all over the world the gore? A photo would become a grizzly icon which forever freeze in our minds the last moment in the life of an evil mass-murderer. Bin Laden was dumped into the sea and with time, a sea of obscurity where he belongs. And the rest of us can get on with healing.

    Good. I trust his judgment.

I wouldn’t mind at some point seeing a painstakingly factual re-enactment, perhaps narrated by in-the-know personnel and the President himself. Maybe in documentary format. I am a details geek like that. But for now, I’m comfortable knowing and trusting that this monster is anchored to the bottom of the sea.

    Viva Obama.

PJ, I love your…..for now. Viva Obama.

This was indeed an intense read. Went over to read the comments made on Steve’s posting. Almost everyone felt it would be inappropriate for the photos to be released. Actually one commenter made a good point–maybe? She concluded that the reason PBO released his birth certificate last week was to test the waters in terms of whether or not it made a difference in how people viewed him. Obviously, it did not make a difference. Her thought was those who do not believe Osama is dead would never believe a photograph. After all photos can be altered. It was a no win situation.

I think PBO was correct in his handling of the situation. I will give him an A+.

I agree with the President call here. The last thing I need is a picture of a dead bin Laden with half of his head blown off plasture all over everywhere. If any member of Congress want to see the pictures, make sure there is no cameras or phone and let them see them. Do the same with any family members who lost love ones in 9/11, that might want to see the pictures. I know the media, watch and see that they don’t try to go to court to get the pictures release. I think this decision was made to try to keep Americans all over the world safe.

That’s exactly what I was thinking, anniebella. I’m so glad they’re not being released, but if people need to see them, or a congressperson wants to, then perhaps there can be some arrangement made for that.

I have always felt that viewing the dead was barbaric.

yes, that includes open caskets as well. I always wait til it is shut before I come into the condolence area.

I feel it is disrespectful to view the dead.

And these photos would do way more harm as they have a strong probablity to incite all kinds of viscious and violent mayhem.

Hate would reign down on America from the muslim world…and lord knows we do not need any more hate from them.

Jay Carney just read an Obama quote on this subject from his 60 Minutes interview which was taped today. It was excellent, and made the case for his decision. A photo could only serve to inflame and could become a rallying poster and put Americans more at risk here and around the world. He said it was in the interest of national security that he made the decision he did. He told Steve Croft to imagine how enraged we would be if one of our leaders or military leaders was slain and the photo was paraded all about. I believe I heard that congressional leaders of both parties have seen the photo and there is general agreement, except for the usual suspects of course, that the photo should not be shown. I also remember that Obama said that we don’t need to spike the ball. That’s not who we are, and Osama Bin Laden will not be walking on this earth again.

To follow up what pinkbunny said:

I got an email from a very good friend during a continuing Ding Dong OBL is Dead email conversation between a group of us, and we, at the time, were discussing the release of the photos –

Her email: “Devil’s advocate – if one of our most hated enemies said they captured and killed Obama in a stealth operation and buried him at sea, would you believe them without proof?

Of course we all believe Obama because we trust him and know of the incredible talent of the Seals, but if the shoe were on the other foot…. There are a lot of parts of the world that have no comprehension of the sophistication of our operations.”

    I responded –

“What’s the greater thing that people are “doubting”:

    – President Obama / (Pick any foreign leader as a substitute – even Gaddafi – or however you spell that prick’s name)

    – The US Military + The US State Department + The US Department of Defense + THE NAVY SEALS / (there really isn’t a foreign military that comes close to this is there…. )

So, it’s not just doubting the Obama. It’s doubting the rest of it, in combination with a media that is so broken, they would be WINNING if it was a hoax. There is no combination on the planet that is equivalent to the above, and the only one that comes close is the UK (because their media is just as rabid.)

Plus, don’t forget, OBL had one of the most GINORMOUS EGOS on the planet. He even released a tape last year. Of course, the only place I got that information yesterday was the BBC live stream from their website – they had a whole history of his shit – that I haven’t caught on any of the stations here, but then I think by the time I got home yesterday I only watched Rachel, and Jon Stewart – who was STELLAR – and if you can grab that rerun today sometime, or watch it online – DO IT. It’s 20 minutes of your life you will thank me for….

Anyway – my point is – it’s a bit of a stretch to think all of the above would lie about it – otherwise, Bush/Cheney would already have done so.”

And after thinking more about this, it really angers me because it goes back to the birth certificate insanity. I’m sick of grown adults (birthers) acting like 5 year old children. The media put up with them and gave them air time, and in some twisted way gave them legitimacy, when they should have been laughed back under the rock they usually live under. The same goes with this. The “Deathers/OBL is the new Elvis” people will NEVER believe any proof EVER, not even if OBL’s head were to be personally delivered to them.

I’d like to see them – Sarah especially, go spew her “doubts” to the head of the US Navy, IN PERSON, and to a Navy Seal’s face. Come on Sarah, where’s your spine?

I, too, would like to see her approach anyone in the military and cast aspersions on whether the SEALS killed OBL or not. Would she dare ask Mr. Donilan, Sec. Gates, Sec. Clinton, or Adm. Mullen about this? Nope. You couldn’t pay her to open her mouth to them on this issue. The witch couldn’t even identify her favorite media person last weekend at an event where she was surrounded by members of the media! She is a cowardly, bloviating, big mouthed, no class, unintelligent, social climbing, ignorant, emotion-driven, know nothing who doesn’t take any time to study/read much of anything. Tally, you are right that the doubts reflect a certain mistrust of government. They also, IMO, go back to something else. They go back to the immediate gratification culture that we are all a part of, willingly or unwillingly. Show me! Show me! Show me something right now so that I can continue my pointless argument. If someone doubts the information, why not wait and see what develops? Can anyone believe that if the arrogant bin Laden were alive, he wouldn’t reveal himself as soon as he could? As was stated above no matter what is shared, there’ll be skeptics. For the doubting types only time will tell one way or the other.

When each of those individuals demanding photos and videos of the death of OBL or of his dead body are willing to step forward and commit to being personally liable to the individuals and their families whom might be harmed in any way for our Government revealing the images to them – a la what happened recently to those UN employees in Afghanistan subsequent to the burning of a copy of the Koran – then I would suggest to the President that he bring them to a secure place and show them the images but not allow any way of those person’s copying and distributing them.

Members of the press could be permitted to state that they have seen the images – and, yes, KO if you want to watch the video of OBL being killed, if such video exists, watch it all you want, dude. But, once again, only under the condition that each member of the press and their organizations be willing to assume full liability for harm that might come to one of the thousands of civilians serving in Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc., for their reporting of what they saw.

Freedom of the press does not confer a right to incite violence against others.

    Period.

Is it just me or is anyone else waiting for Jay Carney to finally tell those idiot propoganda machines, sorry- ‘reporters’- to stick it up their pipes and smoke it? I’m counting down the days till he finally does. If you saw the WH press briefing today, you would know that the briefing room today was like shark infested waters with a group of nasty sharks circling Jay like he was fresh meat (sorry, don’t mean to evoke an image of what we all hope happend to a certain psycho who was recently disposed of). It was disgusting, he would answer one shark’s question, then get ten of the same questions he’d just answered from other sharks gathered at the waters edge. They were so annoying. I don’t know how Jay kept it cool. That man is a saint. Seriously, I would be like: “MoFo, I done told you, you aren’t getting any more information about the operation, now shut the hell up and stop asking me dumbass questions. Next?” They were seriously disgusting. If I said it once, I’ve said it a million times, the media should be handled with an iron fist. Nothing they do or say should be released to the public without being veted by a credible agency. They are a bunch of idiots who unfortunately have a huge podium from which they can espouse their crazy propoganda. Nobody cares about whether or not OBL was armed, we only care that he’s dead. So called ‘enhanced interogation’-cute name for :GROSS VIOLATIONS OF THE GENEVA CONVENTION- was not what led to the death of OBL-infact, to intimate or even suggest it was, is to belittle the years of work and man power that hundreds, no, thousands of patriotic, hard-working men and women have put into finding OBL! These so-called reporters are ridiculous!! They can’t let a feel good story rest in peace. Nope, instead, they have to invent or attempt to find the ugly side of it. They find shadows and boogey-men where none exists, and when they are called out for it, they get all huffy and insulted i.e: Chuck Todd when he and his show were called out for giving credence to Cheese-ball Douchebag Inc (Chump) and his birther shit. I was watching NBC at 7 last night and the local news was on (I live in Florida) and guess what those dumbass ‘reporters’ were saying? That- and this is news to me-Florida is the command center for Gitmo and that it was thanks to the good work done at Gitmo, that a lead was provided to kill OBL. What The Fuck? Are they for real? I am incensed that those sharks provide wrong/bad (so called) ‘news’/lies to the vast majority of Floridians, and god knows what other rot local stations provide in other states, but based on what I’ve seen, it’s the same bullsh*t!!!! We have got to somehow do more than boycott the news, we’ve got to reform it. We got to let them know we’re as mad as hell and we’re not gonna take it anymore-yes, I realize the irony of using that line- but it is the gosh darn truth and I wish I could stick it up their pipes and make them smoke it. 😕
ps- Bailin’ Palin Birther Bit*h is a dumbass and she should stop talking about PBO “pussy-footing around.” I’m waiting for someone to take her down a notch or two million.
pps-I’m sorry for the bad language, but I’m pissed the freak off. This shit has gone way past ridiculous.

      I agree Lisa!

I want Jay to say, “Are you deaf or stupid? Because if you’re deaf, I’ll pass out the information on paper. But if you’re stupid, you need to be replaced with someone who has listening skills. There are too many talented people out of work.”

I personally like your language and your attitude Lisa- I had to stop watching media long ago- I feel no qualms in saying I detest ALL of them all of the time, they are the worst thing about our country imo. I’ve watched them lie, incite and create for too many years- and the crop of folks covering the administration & calling themselves ‘journalists’ is beyond the worst ever. Bunch of starlets who get paid to gossip and enflame.. nothing more.

Thanks Lisa, you said what I feel about the dumb ass so called reporters ask in those press briefings with Jay Carney. He has the patience of Job. I wrote him a letter and asked him to call out the names of each reporter and where they were from because of their idiocy. He hasn’t got it down yet but I am hopeful. I also praised him for his professionalism. I said those reporters don’t have the cognitive functioning to use critical thinking skills and they ask the same questions and try to reframe the reponse to fit their agenda.

What stands out to me so much was the day President Obama spoke about the birth certificate and mentioned Chuck saying the President wouldn’t come here just to speak about the birth certificate. Obama briefly addressed Chuck at the beginning saying “Chuck, I would never discuss current national security publically and you know better than to say that.” He immediately went into the birth certificate issue.

Good rant, Lisa. The fact is, if waterboarding KSM seven years ago led to this silver bullet this past weekend, then what exactly were Bush and Cheney doing for those seven years? And if the safe house was only built in 2005, then how do they explain waterboarding in 2003 leading to a safe house in 2011? They are all idiots. Pure and simple.

Our President is right! The people who say OBL isn’t dead are probably the same one’s who need to be reminded George W. had stopped thinking about him and looking for him. He said so! So whatever President Obama has done is more than George W did. He’s dead! face it. If you think he’s not, then go look for him yourself! And as for water-boarding leading to info that found OBL, why the f— didn’t George W. and his folks go get OBL as soon as the water-boarded prisoner gave up the goods? They are continuing to sound stupid!

It was said early in the aftermath of bin Laden’s death, that one or two had given the information about the courior and they were water boarded but they didn’t give the info while being tortured but at a later time in another interrogation. So yes, Loren why didn’t they go after him them. I’ve heard too many negative things from ignorant people about this operation but am not going to reapeat them. I trust my President and there was some info given during Bush’s presidencey but it was our President, Barack Hussain Obama, who asked the CIA to make it their priority to find bin Laden and the put the puzzle together to bring him down.

The information about the courier was obtained from denials. IOW’s when the #2 guy and the other Malawi? were asked did they know the name they said no, denied knowing such an individual.

This was years after they were waterboarded during CIA interrogation.

The CIA DEDUCED that since both men DENIED knowing the name that the name had to be that of an important individual.

Even then, the name they had was a nickname and they had to find out the real name which took more years of work that began when Obama, as you noted, took office and told Panetta to prioritize the hunt for OBL and to open up and review all the intelligence.

Just because we can’t say it enough:

It was President Barack Hussein Obama that directed the hunt and masterminded the assasination of the mass murderer OBL in May 2011…eight years to the day after the shrub claimed MISSION ACCOMPLISHED and dropped the ball…OBAMA finished the job ran all the way to the endzone and SCORED!

It’s “pussy-footing” to take out public enemy #1 ? This is silly; shows her for the -doesn’t- have -a – clue- fool that she is. She does not matter (PBO said that he does not think about her and neither should we). These haters should give it up. They only make themselves look worse and worse. Do not be overly concerned about the media. Only old people who are not computer savvy watch them. The highest number of viewers any of the network news show have is only 8 milllion.

Why do people want these pictures to be released? What will that prove really? That OBL really is dead? Well if people think the admin is lying about that (which is one of the things they are really saying when they clamor for the pictures to be released), don’t these people think that OBL would have shown up somewhere by now (in the flesh)?

    Thank you Mr. President!!!!

I BELIEVE IN YOUR GUT FEELINGS….that’s the right thing to do.

After all This President always believed in “Mutual Respect” and this act is just one of his beliefs…I am Not surprised:-)

Always taking the high road…his mother raised him well…and we are so blessed to see the results.

Really, let us make her proud of this Gem, she left us…We are really and truly blessed to live in history.

We must, We shall let him finish the job…if, what he did in just 2 years is any indication of what this President can do in the next 4 years…..I believe the best is yet to come:-)

I am with Jamie Fox…..LET HIM FINISH!!!!!!!!! LET HIM FINISH!!!! (and the crowd roars)

I bet this what Jamie Fox is probably saying laughing Lout Out Loud…..But Damn..I didn’t mean catch Osama Bin in just a few weeks since I saw him…Didn’t I tell ya…the Guy is Smoooooth………..LOL

I agree with the POTUS… there is absolutely nothing to be gained by showing the photos. Some idiots still think Elvis, Biggie, and Tupak walk the earth. It doesn’t matter what you show them, some will never be convinced.
