Okay, remember this photo from yesterday:

This was the caption: President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, along with members of the national security team, receive an update on the mission against Osama bin Laden in the Situation Room of the White House, May 1, 2011

Some headlines from today:

From the Mail: “President Obama was watching on a TV screen as a commando gunned down Osama bin Laden. Via a video camera fixed to the helmet of a U.S. Navy Seal, the leader of the free world saw the terror chief shot in the left eye.”

The truth?

New York Times: The president and his advisers watched Leon E. Panetta, the C.I.A. director, on a video screen, narrating from his agency’s headquarters across the Potomac River what was happening in faraway Pakistan.

Independent (UK): ….It was on Sunday afternoon that the drama of at last netting “Geronimo” – the codename given to Bin Laden for the operation – began. Obama, Clinton, Gates, Donilon, Brennan and a few others huddled in the White House Situation Room. A video and audio link connected them to Leon Panetta, the CIA director in Langley, Virginia, who would talk them through what was going on in Pakistan in real time, beginning with the helicopters carrying the Seals clattering through the night sky and arriving above their target.

Jake Tapper on ABC Word News tonight: “The President and his top aides were not able to watch any real time action being shot by the Navy Seals themselves…”.

So, the President did not watch as “the terror chief was shot in the left eye”.

All those people (mainly professional left types) calling him ‘ghoulish!” today ….. be embarrassed 😉

Thank you Hachikō

Just an observation and no I will not send you an email…. The three UK mention TABLOIDS are owned by RUPERT MURDOCK – as in FOX CORP – enough said.

    • May 3, 2011 at 8:35 pm

The Mail and Telegraph aren’t owned by Murdoch, but they’re actually worse – if you can imagine that – than many of the rags he does own. His main ‘possessions’ in the UK are The Sun and Times, as well as Sky News (the UK’s version of Fox).

The same false story appeared just about everywhere today, I just happened to use the British headlines as an example.

PS “and no I will not send you an email”. Why??

Oh Chip, thank you so much for doing that. When I saw that Daily Mail headline this morning, I was shocked. It was jarring. I know some people might not think anything’s wrong if our President actually watched bin Laden die, but the thought of it just didn’t sit right with me, and nothing coming out of the WH corroborated that claim. In fact, when Brennan was asked yesterday if the President could see what was happening, Brennan declined to say what type of technology was used – whether audio or visual. He only committed to saying that they got “live updates.”

Thanks again, Chip! Truth is truth. Facts are facts. 🙂

Thank you Hachikō. To be honest, I think John Brennan helped create this confusion yesterday, but nowhere did he actually say the President watched the killing in real time. But hey, facts are an inconvenient bore, eh? Thanks again.

I agree Hachiko, that is exactly what Brennan said yesterday. Hater’s will find a negative slant – expect it.

President Bush reportedly turned down an offer from PBO to appear beside him at the Ground Zero address on Thursday.

I’m glad the offer was made, but more glad it was turned down.

I don’t care what they were watching. That said, in this toxic environment if I were Barack I’d want to see it’s getting done along with the other twenty or so witnesses. You need that many when the right wing nutters systematically begin to pick them off.

By the way, how do we get Barack and Obama on the computer spell check radar? Isn’t he practically a worldwide household name by now? Just saying …

Bush may be thinking he is a “high value target” after having to cancel that trip to Europe. I don’t expect to see him much in the future. I believe in spit of Laura having built that complex in Dallas, he prefers the Ranch. I honestly think he is fearful and disappointed he was dupped into the presidentcy. It he had it to do over, I don’t think he would. He was to immature to handle the job and let Cheney rule. Cheney wanted a pardon before the fact and before the president left office and the best thing Bush did was not to give any. I guess he figured if he went down he was taking eveyone with him. I always wonder and will never know what he wrote in that letter to Obama that was sitting on his desk when he took office.

I think there is a lot of truth in what you are saying. I think he knows that a lot of people are still angry at his administration. As Carolyn said below, it really is sad.

Lawrence O’Donnell played the tape again tonight of GWB saying he didn’t know where Bin Laden was, and really it wasn’t important. I believe that was in 2005. The tape was truly pitiful. He was far too immature, as one writer said, and it’s amazing that we survived 8 years of that administration. My husband and I agree that he was the dupe for the entire operation. Sad, really.

Actually, he said this in 2002, just one year after the 9/11 killings. The CIA unit that was designated to capture Bin Ladin was shut down in 2005 – the same year the compound was built for Bin Laden to move in. As you said, truly pitiful.

Chipsticks, it’s impossible for these guys to be embarrassed. Maybe I’m a constantly embarrassed type, I mean for the smallest things, for misspelling a word, but I wouldn’t show my face for a generation if I were Trump, for instance, or Gingrich when he was lampooned as a crybaby in diapers after he shut the government down in retaliation for being relegated to the back of Air Force One by Clinton or, in fact, to be George W. Bush for simply being alive.

And yet these boneheads go on living. saying nutty things, proven wrong, and keep looking in their bathroom mirrors each morning, shaving, cleaning their teeth. How do they do it? It absolutely floors me.

You’re so right – they know no shame. You would think that they wouldn’t show their faces, but they continue to do so and to perpetuate their lies.

I watched Jim Leher’s interview with Leon Panetta, and, he said unequivocally, “No” when Jim asked him if he or the President watched OBL being shot. During the 25 minutes that Seal Team 6 was inside, there was no direct video. They received word from the General in Afghanistan thru Mr. Panetta, “Geronimo” to let them know that OBL had been captured. I read that there was also a KIA after than.

The DM has no shame, they thrive on sensationalist headlines. They posted that fake Bin Laden picture, the sad thing is you have people quoting them as source – beyond laughable.
