‘he’s used to it’

Jakarta, Indonesia, 1971

The Atlantic: ……After lunch, the group took a walk, with Barry running ahead. A flock of Indonesian children began lobbing rocks in his direction. They ducked behind a wall and shouted racial epithets. He seemed unfazed, dancing around as though playing dodge ball “with unseen players,” [fellow American and friend Elizabeth] Bryant said. Ann [Barack Obama’s mother] did not react. Assuming she must not have understood the words, Bryant offered to intervene. “No, he’s O.K.,” Ann said. “He’s used to it.”

friday

President Obama will travel to Alabama tomorrow to view tornado damage after storms throughout much of the U.S. Southeast killed hundreds of people. The White House announced that the president would meet with Governor Robert Bentley, state and local officials and families.

The President then travels to Cape Canaveral for the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour, which will also be watched by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and as many as 700,000 onlookers. First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha are also scheduled to be at the launch.

The prospects of crosswinds and cloud cover have increased the probability of a weather-delayed launch to 30 percent, up from the 20 percent prediction NASA has been holding much of the week.

The shuttle launch is scheduled for 3:47 p.m. Eastern Time.

Later in the day, the President is due to give the commencement address at Miami Dade College at 7:00 p.m.
