‘an embarrassment to the country’

Adam Serwer (Washington Post): This Wednesday morning become one of the most surreal and ridiculous moments in the history of American politics when the White House decided to release copies of President Barack Obama’s “long form birth certificate,” in an attempt to quiet conspiracy theorists who believe the president was born elsewhere…

….According to Media Matters, Fox News has spent over two hours promoting false claims about Obama’s birthplace across 54 segments, and only in ten did Fox News hosts challenge those claims. This isn’t just about Trump. All he did was encourage the communications wing of the conservative movement to go into overdrive in an attempt to make birtherism mainstream.

Aside from being one of the most idiotic moments in American political history, this marks a level of personal humiliation no previous president has ever been asked to endure. Other presidents have been the target of crazy conspiracy theories, sure, but few have been as self-evidently absurd as birtherism. None has been so clearly rooted in anxieties about the president’s racial identity, because no previous American president has been black.

This whole situation is an embarrassment to the country. Yesterday Jesse Jackson described birtherism as racial “code,” but there’s nothing “coded” about it. It’s just racism….

And birtherism is only one of a number of racially charged conspiracy theories that have bubbled out of the right-wing swamp and have been allowed to fester by conservative elites. Those who have spent the last two years clinging to the notion that the president wasn’t born in the United States, who have alleged that the president wasn’t intelligent enough to write his own autobiography or somehow coasted to magna cum laude at Harvard law, are carrying on new varieties of an old, dying tradition of American racism. Similar accusations dogged early black writers like Frederick Douglass and Phyllis Wheatley, whose brilliance provoked an existential crisis among people incapable of abandoning myths of black intellectual inferiority.

….Sadly, those who fostered doubts about the president’s citizenship are unlikely to relent in the face of factual proof, because birtherism was never about the facts. For its most ardent proponents, it was and is about their inability to accept the legitimacy of a black man in the White House. Nothing about the decision to release the president’s birth certificate can change that.

People thought CNN was neutral. MAN FUCK CNN. People thought MSNBC was liberal yet they had that asshole Pat Buchannan on their show spewing straight racism. FUCK MSNBC. I don’t fuck with media at all. I’m following AlJazeera English and BBC World. American journalism is freakin’ joke.

While I think it’s ridiculous, because if someone put a gun to my head, I couldn’t produce my long-form birth certificate. Have no idea what it look like, have no idea where to get it, because the hospital I was born at has since closed. The only birth certificate I have is one that has similar information to what the President has already released.

It’s an absolute crock of shyt, and it’s only because this President is BLACK.

BUT….politically, I think it’s brilliant of the President.

    Because, guess what, folks?

The President knows what I know….

    IT WON’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

There will be a poll taken next week, asking now, if the Republican Birthers are satisfied…

the answer to that poll will be NO.

    A RESOUNDING NO.

Because it’s not about the Birth Certificate…it’s about him being a Black Man.

    PERIOD.

And, once that poll is released that reveals that POTUS even releasing the Birth Certificate doesn’t make a DAMN BIT OF DIFFERENCE WITH THESE PEOPLE…

The albatross that is the Birthers will be hung around the GOP going into 2012 like an anvil.

PS-all I know is that I better be able to look up EVERY LAST GOP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE’S LONG FORM BIRTH CERTIFICATE.

I agree collegekay…so many times over the past two and half years I have hung my head and cried. Today was another one. I am so embarrassed that our president felt he had no choice but to do this. Unfortunately you cannot cure willful ignorance. I wish this country could get around to the business of attacking problems instead of people. That is all this president has been trying to do even in the midst of personal attacks against him. Wishing the president and his family peace and love.

I don’t think it’s the President who has been humiliated, because he’s still the same man he was yesterday. But the country has surely been embarassed – the whole world celebrated the election of Barack Obama. And today, some buffoon and his circus followers in the media feel “proud” that they forced a President to produce a piece of paper that has nothing to do with legal authority or certifiability of birth – since it has no legal standing. It’s definitely not an embarassment for President Obama. And the reaction of the media today is further humiliation for this country.

YOU CAN’T HUMILIATE A MAN WITH A ‘JUST SOUL’…THE STRENGTH OF OUR GOOD LORD WILL KEEP HIM WHERE HE NEEDS TO BE. HE WANTED TO END THE TRIVIAL DISCUSSIONS FOR THE SAKE OF THE NEEDS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. YOU HAD BETTER BELIEVE THAT ALMIGHTY GOD RECOGNIZES THIS SACRIFICE!

Well said Theo67, like I said this morning in the original thread I think we as a country took a few steps back and it’s very embarrassing and shameful as a young American to see such a thing. I’ve had a cold sick to my stomach feeling all day.

That racists lying Donald Trump, those racists birthers, and the MEDIA is responsible for all of this B.S. America has come along way, but it still has along long way to go. But our President can still hold his head high, because Trump and the birthers are proven to be liars, no good racists liars.

Theo67, I agree. He did this for the country….it is hugely disgraceful and distracting. It is harmful and hurtful to the psyche of so many Americans, both individually and collectively. America must look hateful and ignorant from afar, so it damaging to how the world views us.

President Obama did this for the people of America. Against the Republicans, he now has an additional tool in his political tool box, although I don’t think that was his highest priority. Do not let any attempts to minimize President Obama for these actions stand. He was the only adult in the room!

Well in good news. Beyonce released her “Move Your Body” video for the middle school kids to dance too. So freaking cute.

    • April 27, 2011 at 3:11 pm

You did not go there….. No you did not. 😦

Sure blacks are good as entertainers and sports…..

See where I am going? But I better stop.

You should not have put this here.

      Ciao form Europe.

      • April 27, 2011 at 3:14 pm

Hey TO, I don’t think that’s fair on Jessica at all, she didn’t make any comment along the lines of “blacks are good as entertainers and sports”, she just posted a Let’s Move video to try and lighten our mood. Be fair.

        April 27, 2011 at 3:22 pm

I think you’re confused. This is a collaboration Beyonce did with Let’s Move (Michelle Obama’s initiative) for healthy eating and an active lifestyle to be released to middle schools across the nation.

You’re clearly not familiar with it.

I think everyone is feeling extra sensitive today. When I saw Jessica’s post, I applauded her silently for trying to make us feel better by posting a happy video of young people celebrating life and working to do better. I certainly didn’t get the impression that she was making a different point, especially given her comments elsewhere that are aligned with pretty much everyone here today. But, I can understand that everyone is feeling delicate right now.

I also agree that Jessica, was trying to make light of the “LET”S MOVE” program, that Beyonce created the moves, which I think was a Good gesture, after today’s shameful ulginess. The Video made me get up and try to do a step or two, and yes, I’m black, but the real Intent Is to “MOVE”, like *EXERCISE*. I really don’t think It was Intended to be offensive, It’s okay, really 🙂

ONE THING I HAVE ALWAYS NOTED ABOUT OUR WONDERFUL PRESIDENT…HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A SELF-SACRIFICING MAN…PUTTING EVERYONE ELSE BEFORE HIMSELF. HE’S EVEN SO ‘HUMBLE’ ABOUT HIMSELF THAT IT’S DIFFICULT TO GET HIM TO ACCEPT HONORS HE DESERVES…THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE COMES TO MIND…HE IS ALWAYS GIVING THE CREDIT TO ‘ALL AMERICANS!’ TODAY’S EVENT WILL GO DOWN IN THE HISTORY BOOKS TO BE SURE AS AN EMBARRASSMENT TO ALL THAT AMERICA STANDS FOR. OBVIOUSLY…TRUMP ENJOYED HIS 15 MINUTES OF VERBAGE…THERE IS NOTHING W-O-R-S-E THAN A PRIDEFUL MAN AND IT WILL COST HIM. IT WILL ALSO COST THE REPUBLICAN PARTY…’JUST DUES’ I DARESAY!

I have always believed that this was a hateful thing to continue, and it will continue.I am 66 years, and I had it done to me in so many nasty ways that tears are flowing down my cheeks right at this very moment. It really does hurt my family here. Now we know that for those who just can’t take the time or want to take the time to search and examine their hearts(not President Obama’s site of birth) this will continue until President Barack H. Obama walks out of the Oval Office on the last date of his last day in his second term. He will have a second term. These people are plain and simple, mad that a Black Man is in the Oval Office as President of the United States.Hate will blind you. Plain and simple. I know what it looks like, smells like, talks like, and feels like. I have had so much poured on me and my family, it is like like burning oil. It hurts because it is evil and ignorant. No more excuses in our beautiful country. Let us call them for what they are. I pray for their hearts to be changed, and their souls to be cleansed. This is a heart problem. Not money, not fame, just plain and simple: We elected a brilliant, wonderful, good and decent man as our President who is a black man, and the real hatred and evil in that other group is ugly and it is spilling all out. I do not care who they are. Blacks especially (among other groups) have always had to show ssooooooooooooooooooo much more, no matter where we have been. President Obama knows that, but he just get tired of allowing this hatred continue to destroy young children who do not have food on the table in this country this morning, parents with no gas in the car to get to work,(or no car now) no food for and medicine for the seniors in my community, no homes to take a nice bath in a tub with running water, and no one seems to really be serious and care about these Americans, but the “Adult in the Room with a heart of fairness, loads of compassion, listening ears, and hands working so hard, it is painful.” But he will be there for 6 1/2 more years, so they might as well get use to it. We are not going anywhere but all over American to put Obama and Biden back in the WH as President and Vice President of the United States of America. These hateful people will not define this President and they will NOT define those of us who worked so hard and are still working hard to help him clean up this mess. ENOUGH.

I must agree America is looking really bad right now! I really do not think this is a liberal vs conservatives matter its more a racial prejudice…that’s how I see it atleast. Even the President of the United States of America is facing racism by such a large, influential, powerful sector then what is it really like for the ordinary black man out there? It leaves alot of questions lingering in the air right now. I read that the black population has the highest unemployment level in the US right now seems like the ‘last to get hired first to get fired’ theory of black people still is adamant today. It really is sad because if America is suppose to be the leader of the free world it doesn’t leave much hope for young black people around the world today because tomorrow doesn’t look brighter at all!! Now they are targeting his education level and whether or not he should be playing basketball in his SPARE time hmmm…shame shame shame!! Please Americans white and black put Donald Trump to rest because this is not a good look for your country. My President Mr Obama keep holding strong and I know you have the best friend to help you do that your loving, intelligent, black and beautiful wife!!! LOVE from the Carribean!!

As vile as the racist segment of our very diverse Nation is, the President, once again, acted as a mentor to all Americans in the importance of the challenges we face and the process of democracy in facing those challenges.

If you listen to the ~ 5 min, he leveraged the ‘carnival barker silliness’ into a civics lesson for everyone.

He chastised the press by noting that they all cut in on their regular programs to cover his statement – which they normally would only do for a ‘national security’ issue. And, then followed with how the bulk of what they spent their time on during a week in which Ryan’s cruel catastrophic legislation passed the House and he gave a major speech on his plan was on the nonsense of his place of birth.

He then spoke directly to the ‘majority of Americans’ in informing them of his awareness of the very serious issues they and the Nation are confronting and that neither he or they should be distracted by silliness from addressing those issues.

Once again, he demonstrated who the only adult in the room is. I also do not think we will see him give any attention to the conspiracy nuts (racists) again and he will use this instance as a way to answer all the continued silliness, and the underlying bigotry, with ‘I told you to get serious and I meant it, next question.’

    Yes.We.Can. … Do.More.Together

Next Trump will want to see his transcripts and the media will run with it. If the GOP candidate doesn’t have to release his long form birth certificate then it’s pure racism.

There’s a magnificent comment under that article (re allegation (!!) that the CIA forged the President’s birth cert):

The CIA had indeed succeeded in making us believe that George W Bush could read and write, so they could easily prove that Obama is white. And that is indeed the root of the problem for Donald Trump and his KKK fans….

      • April 27, 2011 at 3:50 pm

I know, we don’t look to smart today in the worldview…

BTW I don’t read any British papers and in ten year s living abroad I have only traveled to London for one weekend – nothing personal but I have no interest in the British. I speak English well enough and their food, not worth the the trip. LOL.

But I will get to Ireland this summer I must.

Aw, Chips, we do think alike! I came back with that exact quote to share, only to note that you had already caught it. Interesting, isn’t it – the racism is out there for everyone to see. I intend to hang tightly to the belief that this will only work in our favour come 2012.
