happy easter people! (video added)

President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and daughters Malia and Sasha attend Easter church service at Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., April 24. (Pete Souza) Thank you Meta! 😉

Thank you to our video queen, Donna 😉

CNN: President Barack Obama and his family attended the Easter Sunday service at Shiloh Baptist Church, which was founded by freed slaves in 1863.

The first family entered the church to a standing ovation, then joined in singing with the choir, backed by a live band that included a guitar, keyboard and drums.

Rev. Wallace Charles Smith welcomed the Obamas, noting the congregants pray for them every Sunday.

At collection time, Obama and his daughters gave money in envelopes provided at their seats. The first family left after two hours, as the service approached its conclusion.

Churchgoers watch as President Obama and his family depart following an Easter morning service at Shiloh Baptist Church

“In your easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it, we’ll be the grandest fellows, in the Easter Parade…on the Avenue, Fifth Avenue…” Ugh!! I’m waiting for PBS to show Easter Parade. I haven’t seen it in three years (My dorm doesn’t carry anything but Basic Cable which is ridiculous since I pay so damn much for tuition and board.) I sooooo miss Turner Classic Movies, I bet Easter Parade has already been shown or about to be shown 😦 Anyone with TCM, please watch at least one musical today for me. Did I mention: 😦 😦 😦

Hi Chipsticks – Happy Easter and thanks soooooo much for this great site.

By the way, my sister & I saw Maya Soetoro-Ng in Mills College last Thursday. She was the guest speaker for the event Young Women Speak the Economy at Mills Collage in Oakland, CA. I enjoyed hearing her read her book Ladder to the Moon and talk and the inspiration behind it. It was so nice to see her again. I saw her two years ago during the campaign without bodyguards – how times change! She shared stories about her childhood in Indonesia and her mother’s influence in her life and how much she would have enjoyed being a grandma to Malia, Sasha, Suhaila & Savita.

One of the questions from the audience was: “How do you think your mother would have reacted to your brother’s success?” Her response: I think she would be extremely proud of him but she would probably first ask him if he’s happy.

After her speech, she went to the lobby to get ready for book signing. My sister & I were first in line and got our book signed. After the signing, we had a picture taken with her. She is such a beautiful and gracious person inside and out.

I searched the internet but can’t find a write-up regarding this event.

Thank you Obamiliafor sharing this with us. How exciting . I just received my copy of the book, and I will be looking forward to reading it. That was very interesting about the answer to the question about how their mother would feel about President Obama.” If he’s happy.” Thank you again for sharing.

Thanks for sharing, Obamalia. It’s always nice to hear from our foot soldiers when they encounter members/family members of this administration. Each positive report feels like a feather in my personal cap – matters not that I don’t know any of them personally! [You probably couldn’t find a write-up because the occasion wasn’t ‘negative’ enough. The media is sooooo dysfunctional, IMO.]

She’s a young girl who’s growing up. Some mature faster than other, we know this, we’ve seen it in our own family. I feel for them, it can’t be easy growing up in the spotlight. Imagine when he is re-elected and those teen years come. People can be kind of rude, they may not mean too. But I really just hope they are happy self confident young girls. And I think Mr. and Mrs. Obama will see to that.

                Welcome Mark in Dominica..

              • April 24, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Hiya Mark, thank you so much for your comment, really lovely to have you visit – although I’m insanely jealous of you living in Dominica. It’s just not fair. We have lots of people from the Caribbean, and all over the world (my blood is Irish), visit the blog and, I think, many could relate to you when you say “I am not an American but I follow what’s happening in your country more than I do in my own”. But you know the expression “if America sneezes the world catches a cold”? I think that’s why it makes perfect sense for everyone to care about what happens in American politics, I still shudder when I think of the impact on the world, never mind America, if McCain/Palin had been elected: oh God, what a horrible thought!

Thank you again for commenting Mark, I hope you’ll visit often.

PS I also reckon the heightened global interest in America politics is largely down to admiration for the President, after those grim Bush/VP Halliburton years, and utter bewilderment at the levels of hate and racism he is enduring.

I totally agree with you Chipsticks on the phrase ‘if america sneezes the world catches a cold’ but I think the reason we caribbean people are all over American politics and not our own is because of President Obama and the First family! We adore him and are EXTREMLY proud of his election!! Just thought i’ll clear up that because trust me before the Obamas I had little interest in American politics although the success of America greatly impacts my beautiful country. OBAMA 2012!! Wish I could vote 😦 vote for me all americans pleassssssse!

Thanks, Chipsticks. It’s true, they always said that about America sneezing etc. However, my interest is not really about how America’s situation may or may not affect me personally. I follow the politics because I feel so strongly about how President Obama, his family and his administration are treated. In all my life, I’ve never witnessed such consistent disrespect and blatant racism on such a grand scale. My theory is that many white people in America have been trained from birth to look down on black people and for this reason, they simply cannot accept having a black man in office who they are supposed to look ‘up’ to. Their little worlds have been turned upside down. Everything they’ve known has been turned around – and they don’t like it! It’s for this reason that I stay tuned and want to express my support in my own small way. I want to stand up and be counted among those who believe in decency, justice and dignity, because it’s in short supply in America today. But it’s not in short supply in the White House. On the contrary, the Obama family display nothing but class – the kind of class that can’t be bought. Sorry – sermon over…!

I know that they will get some spiritual encouragement from the service. Remember how POTUS said that he loves the music when he goes to worship. We pray this will lift his spirit. We love our ladies. God is good to us, let us take very good care of our First Family with our prayers and hard work to get POTUS re-elected. We can ask that with boldness in our prayers. I believe. Not to change the subject, but did any of you hear what Franklin Graham said about our President this morning on Christine Amanpour, I know her last name is spell wrong, but you know what show I’m talking about, it comes on abc at 9am Sunday morning. Graham talks about the birther issue, if the President is a christian or not. He just went all out, and he praised Trump. I never have like Franklin Graham. But see what you can find out and we shall talk about this some more.

As usual, P M Carpenter has an excellent essay this morning that I hope you all will read:

    http://pmcarpenter.blogs.com/p_m_carpenters_commentary/2011/04/of-bombthrowing-and-sidelines.html

    In it, he notes:

“Because you’re not governors; you’re tea-heaving anarchists. You’re not regular Army; you’re renegade snipers. You’re not respectable campaigners in support of respectable candidates; you’re ill-schooled agitators and prehensile bombthrowers and manifest racists and orgiastic nihilists.”

To which, I added a comment – Please allow me to suggest that the above is also a perfect description of the poutraging fake Democrats aka ‘professional left’ demagogues and their minions.
