ah, journalistic integrity!

On Friday an INCENSED Glenn Greenwald (is there any other kind?) reckoned he’d unearthed yet another reason to spew his increasingly hysterical bile at the President. You got the feeling from his post at Salon he was so giddy with excitement he was about to faint.

Under the heading ‘Top Bush-era GITMO and Abu Ghraib psychologist is WH’s newest appointment’ he told us that Dr Larry James, a retired Army colonel who “was the Chief Psychologist at Guantanamo in 2003, at the height of the abuses at that camp, and then served in the same position at Abu Ghraib during 2004,” had announced in an email that he had been selected to serve on a “White House Task Force entitled Enhancing the Psychological Well-Being of The Military Family”.

“In his new position,” said GG, “he will be meeting at the White House with Michelle Obama and other White House officials on Tuesday.”

So, off he went:

“…what this appointment does is have the White House – yet again – signal that it does not really take very seriously the Bush torture regime …. Is there really nobody in the White House who was able to come to that realization on their own, or is this part of some twisted “reaching out” effort to show that they view bygones as bygones when it comes to the war crimes our leaders committed and whom the Obama administration continues to protect? Whatever the explanation, the symbolism here is as ugly as the mindset underlying it.”

The problem here? GG wrote this tirade before checking the veracity of the email and before he got a response from the White House about James’ claim.

When the response came, he stuck it at the bottom of the post, but left his rant and the headline on the story unchanged.

The response from the WH:

“Several members of the White House staff are convening a meeting with multiple mental health professionals on Tuesday to discuss issues pertaining to the wellness of military families. SAMHSA and the American Psychological Association have both been asked to attend. We understand that Dr. James is involved with these groups and may have been indirectly invited to attend this meeting.”

And: “Dr. James has not been appointed to serve in any capacity with the White House.”

Repeat: GG – who spends his life criticizing the lack of journalistic integrity among those who write anything mildly supportive of the President’s actions – wrote his tirade before getting the White House’s response.

There are now over 400 replies to the post from mainly GG groupies, most of whom seem to have just read the still unchanged headline – even his groupies don’t read all the way to the end of his invective. They are drooling all over their beloved GG for providing this proof that the President loves torturers.

In the middle of all the comments was this voice of sanity: “Welcome to the ground zero of echo chambers. Don’t let the Greenwald acolytes get to you. They project a lot. You would think that journalistic integrity would be something welcomed here, like checking sources before hitting the send button. But not if he is your blog messiah, right boys?”

It’s late Sunday and still the headline remains unchanged

What was it GG said about the President in his rant? “The symbolism here is as ugly as the mindset underlying it.” He could have been talking about himself.

It gets better – Greenwald posted a comment in response to criticism of him on the blog, this is part of it:

“If someone wants to argue that I should have contacted the WH for comment before writing this, that’s a reasonable criticism. I’ll concede that it would have been better to do so…..”.

But then he goes on to try and justify himself.

It’s Monday, and the headline remains unchanged.

I am convinced that Greenwald has some serious mental issues. No one is this irrational without there being a problem present.

I agree with you on that one. And if he is the PL’s “idol” then I’m sorry for them.

      • March 27, 2011 at 7:54 pm

He is their idol. They readily call other Obots but all of their talking points on almost every issue comes from him.

        • March 27, 2011 at 8:14 pm

Hey Gobrooklyn, what makes me laugh about his groupies is that they don’t even get the irony of calling the President’s supporters ‘obots’. Their worship of Greenwald is beyond creepy. I read some of their comments under that post and their efforts to defend him were comical, he can do no wrong! And they call us Obots?! 😆

And if you say anything to disagree with him, you are attack by his followers. I had a back and forth conversation with him on twittter two weeks ago about PBO and because I disagreed with his ignorance his followers starter coming after me.

            • March 27, 2011 at 9:28 pm

That happened me too, Symmetry, before I gave up on Twitter. The cult of GG is a peculiar thing, these people’s frenzied support of him is bizarre, no matter how many times he ****s up they’ll lovingly stand by him. And we’re the Zombies? 😆

His arrogance is what I find most repulsive, he just seems to fly in to a rage when any one dares disagree with him, and all he can do is shower abuse on them. He’s so used to his groupies swooning at his every word he cannot cope with ‘dissent’.

I forget now who I saw him debating Wikileaks with, but it was a guy who has been campaigning for years (much longer than Greenwald) for more openness in government. Greenwald’s treatment of him was simply disgusting, he’s just a contemptuous jerk. Of course, he didn’t like the guy mentioning the work of Wikileaks that endangered lives ….

…. because that was doubting the magnificence of Greenwald’s personal hero, Assange.

He’s a creep. And you just have to look through his groupie’s comments on Salon to see whose support he’s attracting now – racist filth.

…and the final piece of the puzzle snaps into place.

I cannot believe that Salon provides Greenwald with such a high platform from which to literally act the fool. How the mighty have fallen, and how formerly impeccable fact-based journalistic resources have allowed themselves to become utterly diminished by Greenwald and his cult of personality.

Joan Walsh has always been a huge Hillary fan. After Obama won the primary she was still going on the tube and saying how horrible it was that Obama won. Hillary deserved to win.

Occasionally I read over there. The comments are horrible. Whiny liberals beefing about Obama the failure.

GN, it is so nice to see you here. xodr

                    ps greenwald is an ass.

What interests me is that there are only 400 comments. I thought this guy was some kind of lefty god. It stands to reason that many of those comments are from the same people, so it’s hardly worth getting too upset about. Not like he has much of a following. Just a loud voice.

    • March 27, 2011 at 7:25 pm

He’s all over the media, though, Tien, they can’t get enough of him (especially on Wikileaks) – so, unfortunately, he is influential.

    • March 27, 2011 at 7:57 pm

He is a big deal within the PL circle which includes the folks on msnbc and the radio. Also, if you listen to Jon Stewart sometimes you can tell where he and his staff get their information. Not too long ago he was on the Colbert Report.

gobrooklyn. I hope jon stewart suffers some form of consequence for his regular bashing of Obama.
Heck, maybe he wants Obama to lose so jonny has a teatard president to really rip into. Anger! I will never forget or forgive the way he treated PBO when he went onto jon’s show before the November elections. Dude. He called the president dude and timid.

I have gotten so much mileage out of the debunking that goes on here and at other rational sites. It really helps me to talk about the false info from the Left in much the same way we were able to respond to the false stuff coming from the Right during the 2008 campaign. I didn’t anticipate I was going to need this but I sure do. I can’t thank our host or the many participants more for the resources.

I have only ever read the rantings of this Greenwald character here or on BWD’s site, and I consider myself to be relatively and moderately well informed. I have no idea where to find this Greenwald’s work, and I’m glad of it. The few thousand people who know him, listen to him. worship him, etc., well, they are small in the grand scheme of things. It’s a sad state of affairs, though, that he is blinded by hatred. It must be eating him up.

Thanks to President Obama’s ascendency, it has been shocking how many of the so-called progressive left have been exposed for what they really are: unaldulterated racists of the first order!!!
It has just been a wow speechless realization!!!

What I would like to know is how GG found this information in the first place?

Via an email that the psychologist James supposedly sent to a Havard Human Rights group telling them that the WH was going to hire him for the position and because he was going to work for the administration, he was now invited to the meeting. Now, isn’t that something? Mr. Greenwald and his admirers are now claiming that the WH subsequently “fired” the psychologist simply because of Greenwald’s post calling them out. Greenwald simply cannot admit that he jumped the gun. So how do you know that James wasn’t lying about being hired by the WH?

My guess tells me that this is yet another RW joining with the PL to smear the Administration hit job.

      • March 27, 2011 at 9:13 pm

Ah, you gotta love the GG groupies! Greenwald, right or wrong! He went ahead with his post without even getting confirmation – or a denial – from the White House that Baker had indeed been selected for the task force. Again, this is the guy who ceaselessly lectures journalists on integrity. If you’re reporting even a semi-controversial story the very least you do is get both sides of the story – and you wait until you do before, as the commenter said, you click send. He’s just a guy with an ugly agenda who won’t let facts get in the way of another anti-President Obama diatribe.

        • 24 hopefruit2
          March 28, 2011 at 8:45 am

Greenwald has already decided that President Obama is a liar. He has implied as much. Therefore, whenever he hears a rumor about the WH doing something bad, he doesn’t feel the need to verify the story because deep down in his racist gut, he knows that this Black guy is a war criminal (like Bush) and a liar (unlike Bush).

    March 27, 2011 at 8:13 pm

It seems as if it is Greenwald who has no integrity because he was wrong, and yet, he refuses to change the headline of his post and to send the WH an apology via email. I crossed GG’s name off my list of persons to read sometime back in 2009 when he began attacking PBO for everything he did/said. A legitimate complaint or fact-based article is one thing, a blatant smear is an entirely different animal, but a smear and no apology when one has lied and chastised another for a lack of integrity is as low as a person can get. I thank God that my parents taught me not to hate others.

    • March 27, 2011 at 8:19 pm

You’re so right, Majii. If Greenwald wants to rant against the President based on his interpretation of facts, that’s fine – of course. But when he attempts to smear the President based on ‘information’ he didn’t even check out, well that’s just incredible – especially from the guy who lectures everyone on journalistic integrity.

      March 27, 2011 at 8:45 pm

Greenwald refuses to change the headline of his post because he stands by his post that the Obama administration did in fact make a move to hire this individual, but quickly changed their mind AFTER Greenwald “exposed” them with his post at the Salon.

      • March 27, 2011 at 10:04 pm

Just like Cenk who said the WH is handing off Libya because the media was upset.

They are all just skunk slime!!! Their bewildering hate for President Obama will be *their* undoing!!! Mark my words!!!
Greenwald, Cenk, Arianna, the whole lot of them!!! Just you watch and see, they will all implode and in no time too!!!

          March 28, 2011 at 6:51 am

This is why I think it goes so much higher than mere disagreement. This is total denigration to the point of slamming the WH, then taking credit for the WH’s good decisions. What a bigoted little bunch.
