‘city of god’

AP: ….In this nation of 190 million where half the population is black, Obama’s election is an inspiration for many, said Ana Luiza Paradiso, a 40-year-old housewife.

“He opened a path for us,” Paradiso said. “The fact that he is black lets other people dream. We have a real connection, real empathy for Obama.”

…City of God gained worldwide notoriety after the 2002 film, which told of the slum’s transformation over five decades from a government-planned housing project for the poor to a violent haven for cocaine gangs. The same story has been repeated in hundreds of Rio slums.

In 2009, however, City of God became part of an ambitious police “pacification” program, in which security forces clear heavily armed gangs from slums and establish a police presence….

Noemia Marinho, a 40-year-old saleswoman who lives in the slum and got her hair done just for the presidential visit, said she hopes Obama’s presence inspires Brazil to pay more attention to her neighborhood.

“He is thinking of Rio as more than just the Christ and Copacabana,” Marinho said, referring to the city’s iconic hilltop statue and world-famous beach. “Maybe our government will look to us more as well.”

p.212 “People listen to Obama . . . They look out for him, not just as a politician but almost as a member of their own family, a talented son sent out into the wider world to bring honor to his community. His glory reflects back on them.”

No wonder that in Ghana, now Brazil, later in Ireland and the rest of the world, the signs say “Welcome home, President and mrs Obama. The whole world claims the Obamas as their own. As Michelle has said I have never been more proud of my country as now with the O family in the White House.

HP2 – I followed your link and I enjoyed watching the video segment where the author spoke about President Obama. It’s only 6+ minutes and it was interesting.

Happy Sunday, everyone! I expect we are in for another terrific day sharing vicariously in the Obamas’ ‘vacation’. 😆 😆 I made sure to do the household chores before signing on today so I won’t feel guilty if I get too caught up in the happenings.

Hello Dorothy. I think you might enjoy also reading another great book about President Obama; “Reading Obama.” Author: James T. Kloppenberg. It is really excellent. A must for those who love watching how POTUS takes us on this great journey. I hope that you will enjoy reading it.

AWWWWWWW….How appropiate He’s in a city of God…I tell you He was sent by God, I really believe that…
I mean, the balance, in handling everything that’s going on in the world today, he finds time for everything including this great image of him playing soccer with the kids.Being in a poor country or an extravagant palace He finds comfort in all. We are so so blessed to have him lead our country and the world, with grace, compassion, and brains, that he’s having critics making things up, in order to discredit his brilliance.

Lol at ladies here checking him out….I know Michelle said..I married him, because he was cute and intelligent…I am sure there are other things she likes about her husband…heheheh:-)

Love you all for making me LOL this morning……

May God Bless this President… and his family:-)

Aside from the awesomeness of that one particular pic which I will not say anything further escept HQ version please, seeing our POTUS finally in the slums of Rio is making my heart full and I am teary at the moment. My fiance says he hopes POTUS gets to the slums of Kingston Jamaica (he is from there) soon or at least in the early part of his second term. I know he went to Trinidad but has POTUS been to any other of West Indies country’s in this first term yet? CS thank you thank you thank you for the updates. ❤

Eric Holder’s parents are from Barbados. We are all connected in this world. So I’m sure at some point in his second term, our President will make a trip to the West Indies.

The little girl in the video with the ponytail during the performance reminds me of Sasha when she was little. I think she reminded POTUS and FLOTUS of Sasha as well, because they kept pointing the little girl out of Sasha.

Hi professorx10. I tried to PM you but don’t know how to do it yet. I just wanted you to know that Kansas is still in the game and plays tonight. It was K-State that lost last night to Wisconsin. Pittsburg is out. The reason I know is I went to Kansas in Lawrence, KS and my granddaughter goes to K-State in Manhatton, KS . She said Kansas was too much of a party school and she is going for an education.

Once you guys have finished listening to the President, here is an interesting summary of the background on Brazil’s president. It might provide some points you can use in discussions at work as to the importance of the President’s visit.

I don’t care what President Obama does or says all I know is that I love this man and the way he has loved and embraced his wife, he has sent a clear message out to the rest of the world that black women are desired and loved and marriage material. Beleive it or not, Barack Obama has done a lot more than we care to imagine.
