I hope your Portguese is better than mine πŸ˜•

WFP: First lady Michelle Obama met with about 50 Brazilian youth ambassadors, took in a martial arts-dance presentation and was wowed by a group of female samba drummers during the first day of her and President Barack Obama’s five-day tour of Latin America.

Waving and smiling as she entered an open-air space in a restaurant shaded by palm tress, Michelle Obama electrified the crowd of youngsters, many of whom have taken part in a State Department program that sends them to the U.S. for cultural exchanges.

“Bom dia! Is that it? That’s all I have, unfortunately,” Obama said as she greeted the group with the Portuguese phrase for “good morning,” drawing applause and laughter as she confessed her poor knowledge of the language.

Obama, accompanied by daughters Sasha and Malia, and her mother Marian Robinson, then drilled home a message she has repeated to youngsters around the world: Education and trying to understand other cultures is one of the best cures for some of the globe’s ills.

…Icaro Soares Alves, 19, from the jungle city of Manaus, met Michelle Obama last year in Washington when he took part in the exchange program.

“This is one of the most important moments of my life, to meet her again,” he said. “She breaks all the stereotypes that American people are cold. With her smile and embrace she is so welcoming. I think she must have a little Brazilian in her.”

Michelle Obama, her two daughters Sasha and Malia, her mother Marian Robinson, the girls’ godmother, Eleanor Kaye Wilson, and Guisela Shannon, wife of U.S. Ambassador Thomas Shannon attended cultural performances with young Brazilians, many from disadvantaged backgrounds who have participated in a range of U.S. sponsored exchange and leadership development programs.

I had to come back and write that it seems that these folks are doing a capoeira show for Mrs Obama and the girls πŸ˜€

I started doing Capoeira when I was 15 πŸ˜€ but after 1 fall too many I said No Mas! and quit and now I might have back surgery in the coming months or years;depending on how treatment is going 😑 😦

I still love it nonetheless πŸ˜€

          March 19, 2011 at 3:58 pm

well I started with physio therapy and did acupuncture 6 years ago when the back pain started

Then I did those soooooooooo painful steroid shots which made me swell up but didn’t get ride of the pain
I am now on some mild steroid pain killer but the doctor has talked about back surgery but he thinks I am way too long since I just turned 30 in October :s

They found out as well;after a year of complaining of a headache that wouldn’t go away and a neck pain as well that I have a pinched nerve in my neck 😦

I have to go back in 1-4 months for 1 more Intramuscular EMG to determine if I have more pinched nerves so until they figure it all out;I am on painkillers that are NOT helping πŸ™„ 😑 😦

OK, I admit it, I have never been a fashionista kind of person. But our First Lady is making me re-think that. Just came off a brutal two weeks of a big implementation, sit down to relax at this site, and the first thing I see is that first picture of our FLOTUS. I am so happy and proud that our First Lady looks like that. I’m not even sure I know what I mean by “that” – maybe gorgeous, sexy, entirely comfortable in her skin, spontaneous, emotive, expressive, down-to-earth, looking like the rest of the planet, ineffably and utterly enjoyable. I’m forgetting my days at college tramping around in surplus army shirts and combat boots because it was important back then to be against lookism. Ah well.

Michelle doesn’t just attract attention she holds attention because she is a woman of substance, she is so much more than her physical attributes and her fashionable wrappings. In my advancing age and hopefully growing wisdom, I have come to appreciate authenticity however it looks. She radiates grace and beauty, inside and out.

Sue, thank you for that observation. So true. I really do believe that is why President Obama was focus on making sure she said yes to his date finally, and most importantly, yes, to I will and I do. Look what a wonderful gift we all can enjoy in our country and this world. I love all of the insightful comments here. Speaking of snacks, I just went downstairs and placed a couple of delicious brownies on a lovely tray, and now I am sitting back enjoying my friends here on this site. You all are making this senior so happy for all of the hard work that I put in during my 36 years in my career. You just make me so proud how you share and respect each other. Our POTUS and FLOTUS are proud of us as well. Thank you so much!!

I favor yoga pants (although not the yoga..I know faker). Just let your light shine…and keep it real. I would rather have someone listen to what I say than focus on what I’m wearing…..I’m from the enhance but don’t distract school. I had a boyfriend once that thought I should be “working it” more…I think that was about him, not me….we didn’t last.

This is trivia, I know, but does Michelle have a different wedding ring? I thought her ring was white gold but this one looks like yellow gold. My eagle eye tends to notice the baubles. Anybody know?

So my eyes aren’t deceiving me! I think it’s a new and bigger rock too. And it looks like a marquise (sp?) my favorite cut. Maybe PBO got if for her last birthday which was in January I think. If he did — well done, Mr. President.

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but I noticed how Sasha seems a little disinterested in her surroundings…LOL. In reality, she is just being herself, listening to her “Mom”, not necessarily the First Lady, but it dawned on me too, while looking at her, just such a profound learning experience this all is for her and Malia. These young ladies are going to be terrific women when they’re grown as they have the very best of role models in their dad, mom, and grandmom ever present. God bless them to be the type of people such as their parents, to be influential in bettering their fellow citizens and the world to any extent.

    • 69 P
      March 19, 2011 at 5:45 pm

I don’t know about disinterested but she always seems so deep in thought like she’s soaking everything up that sometimes she comes off as not really paying attention. They are blessed girls indeed.

      March 19, 2011 at 6:53 pm

I was wondering if she wasn’t a bit travel weary. I don’t think it’s necessarily easy for these young girls, despite all the wonderful opportunities, and the sense of love and security their Mom and Dad and Grandma wrap them in.

It’s a shame that so many in their own country are so blind to that. I love them and pray for them everyday. It’s one of my dreams to go to Brazil and I hope that will happen soon. Hello everyone. My what an exciting day with all of you and esp. Chipsticks. Viva la Brazil.

I love when the Obama family travels. It most definitely is a business trip for our POTUS but also a cultural trip for his ladies. Michelle brings happiness to the people wherever she goes. I love the dress and need to go to Mrs. O” website to see who the designer is. The designers get so excited when she wears one of their creations.

Malia has a darling smile on her face as her Grandmother whispers in her ear and Sasha is taking it all in. I wonder what goes on in her brain. This is one big lovefest. Our FLOTUS is spreading it around everywhere she goes.

Chipsticks, I along with everyone here in reading their comments hope you know how we sincerely appreciate your hard work and the joy that you bring us. πŸ˜€

    Fred, hope you get better.
