Isn’t that sweet? Aissatou Hamidou Diallo brought her own speech with her. Brave little girl.

I love Michelle. She has enough love for the whole world. Nice dress too.

Which makes it all the more wierd and fishy that so-called “liberals” like Ben Affleck will not reach out to this First Lady and the President, but will grovel to the likes of Cindy McCain especially on matters to do with women and children in Africa!!!

What? Ben Affleck won’t reach out to a “black” woman about “black” people? I think we all do give too much credence to celebrity of the Hollywood persuasion, to be liberal and informed. We’re finding out now they too have their little biases, idiosyncrasies, and deep partisanships, not to mention ideologies about the governing of this country as per usual. I personally feel offended with colonizers masquerading as benefactors of people who look like myself. This is not to indict them, but to note the perception of black people as being needy and helpless. It is high time for Africa to do for Africa. Aide has been a hindrance in advancement of the continent. Didn’t mean to get wordy, been doing that all day …LOL!

Actually, there are plenty of Africans who believe the same and are working to create local solutions, with partnerships for support from international experts. It’s happening all over. I was involved in setting up a non-profit to do just that a couple of years ago, and I’ve seen documentaries about other people making the same moves. For example, there’s a group teaching people how to make malaria mosquito nets, start a “factory”, and selling them locally at a subsidized price. It’s working, and it’s becoming more of a trend.

Ben Affleck won’t even respect the President with an african father or his black wife, but will fly to Africa with the wife of one of the most racist men to “save” africans! What an irony!

I’m right there with with you edp4 re: these so-called do-gooders/benefactors always trotting themselves over to the “dark” continent supposely with good intentions; but not too much ever seem to change. Will someone please explain what Damon said. I don’t watch the “news”. So, I’m out of the loop if I don’t get news from TOD, WeeSeeYou, and other positive sites.

She is such an inspiration for all and a very gracious lady. It’s easy to see why the President loves her so much! She was picked as the “most powerful” woman – well deserved. She is beautiful inside and out!

Incidentally, how sweet is Aissatou? Hope to see a video of her speaking.

Yes, EDP4BHO, she’s sweet and a beautiful child, but best of all intelligence is shining out of her eyes. This kind of child is the future of Africa.

I’ve become enchanted with Africa, specifically Botswana, since reading Alexander McCall Smith’s “The Ladies Number One Detective Agency.” Ten books so far. I’ve got every one of them except for the very last one, the eleventh, and have recently got a travelogue DVD by Smith, featuring the land and people of Botswana. We’re all looking forward to watching it together this weekend.

Thanks for posting this and the pictues! I was there on Tuesday and heard Aissatou speak (she read from her speech in French and had a translator). Aissatou also introduced Mrs. Obama. I thought it an amazing platform to stress the importance of educating girls and shared your link with a group that a few of us former Peace Corps volunteers from Africa are working with to send girls to school in our service country. http://www.facebook.com/?sk=lf#!/girlstoschool
