breaking (tree) news

Oh drat, the National Christmas tree has fallen over 😦

NYT: High winds whipped through Washington on Saturday, downing power lines in a few places, fueling brush fires and even toppling the National Christmas Tree.

The Christmas tree, a Colorado blue spruce, more than 40 feet tall and nearly 48 years old, had been donated by a family in Pennsylvania … it was moved by the National Park Service in 1978, becoming a permanent fixture on the Ellipse in President’s Park. The tree had no known health problems when it fell, said a Park Service spokesman, Bill Line.

…As part of an annual tradition dating to the Coolidge administration in 1923, the National Christmas Tree is decorated and then lighted by the president in a widely attended, nationally broadcast celebration.

In, em, memory:

which side are you on?

Come all you good workers
Good news to you I’ll tell
Of how the good old union
Has come in here to dwell

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

My daddy was a miner
He’s now in the air and sun
He’ll be with you fellow workers
Until the battle’s won

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

They say in Harlan County
There are no neutrals there
You’ll either be a union man
Or a thug for J. H. Claire

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

Oh workers can you stand it?
Oh tell me how you can
Will you be a lousy scab
Or will you be a man?

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

Don’t scab for the bosses
Don’t listen to their lies
Poor folks ain’t got a chance
Unless they organize

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

Supporters of Republican Governor Scott Walker hold placards at the State Capitol grounds as members of the Wisconsin  state government discuss the proposed bill by Walker in Madison, February 19, 2011. Supporters of legislation to reduce public employee union bargaining power and benefits in Wisconsin were far outnumbered by opponents on Saturday, as the two sides shouted competing slogans under clear skies.

thanks a million!

Okay, it looks like this little blog is going to …. gulp …. reach the million-hits mark over the next day or two. This isn’t a ‘look at me!’ self-congratulatory post, I promise – it’s just a ginormous thank you to everyone who has visited and/or commented since October 2009. It’s been an absolute pleasure meeting up with you all, you’re great people with the kindest of hearts.

But hey, if you think I’ve been busy, have a look at this fella:

coach-in-chief

President Obama picks up a boy to help him shoot a basketball as part of the Annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House, April 13, 2009

Herald Sun: He may have one of the most demanding day jobs in the world, but US President Barack Obama took on one more work assignment Saturday when he stepped in to coach daughter Sasha’s basketball team – even though she wasn’t there.

The White House said First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia were on a Colorado ski trip with friends but gave no details.

Obama helped coach nine-year-old Sasha’s team for the first time, filling in for the regular coach, at a community center in Maryland. There was no word on whether his team won.

‘two years of economic recovery’

Blackwaterdog posted this amazing graph at The Only Adult In The Room today – feast your eyes on it, and pass it on to your Republican friends and the MSM 😉

It’s from the Political Correction website (here) – make sure you read the accompanying article, it’s incredibly powerful.
