Always. Always reasonable. Arguably the smartest pundit/reporter on tv. I’m so glad I have cable again so I can start watching his show on Sundays (the only Sunday show – and, in most cases, the only political show – I watch).
Mr. Fareed’s comment is the best summary of the situation and the administration’s response that I have seen so far. Thank God for reasonable voices in the cacophony of self-appointed foreign policy “experts”. President Obama is indeed on the right side of history. There should be no surprise that in a situation as important as the pro-democracy movement in Egypt there would be conflicting opinions within the administration on exactly how to proceed. It is to President Obama’s credit that a careful decision was made based on the values of our democratic society as well as the interests of the Egyptian people and the world. This President does not exact 100% agreement from his advisers; instead he listens carefully to all points of view and then makes a decision in line with his foreign policy objective of encouraging and supporting democracy and sound governance while emphasizing the need to avoid violence and resolve conflicts through debate and diplomacy.
Thank you for such a smart and truthful analysis of the situation. I commend you for your courage to say what needed to be recognized about the actions of our President Barack Obama.
Fareed seems to me the most reasonable face on news channels these days. I know he doesn’t always satisfy but he does a damn good job of keeping it honest and insightful. Kudos to him, and @hgerhard, nice commentary.
PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS DONE A SUPERB JOB IN HANDLING THE EGYPTIAN CRISIS. WE HAVE TO GET TO THE POINT OF IGNORING THE GOP’S CRITICISM. THERE ISN’T ANYTHING THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA DOES THAT THEY LIKE TO BEGIN WITH BECAUSE THEY HAVE THEIR OWN POLITICAL AGENDAS. THEY LOVE TO HYPE THE MEDIA AND INITIATE ARGUMENTS AND VIEWPOINTS TO A FESTERING LEVEL. WHAT THEY ACTUALLY WANT TO DO IS TO KEEP THE AMERICAN CONVERSATION REGARDING PRESIDENT OBAMA IN TURMOIL. THINK ABOUT IT…THIS IS ALL THAT WE HAVE SEEN IN ACTION IN FRONT OF CAMERAS EVER SINCE THIS PRESIDENT CAME INTO OFFICE. ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE…PRESIDENT OBAMA’S ‘TO BE ADMIRED’ COOL AND CALM DEMEANOR REALLY TICKS THEM OFF. THIS PRESIDENT IS FILLED WITH NOT ONLY LEADERSHIP GRACE…BUT INTEGRITY…THEY ARE QUITE AWARE OF THIS AND PREFER TO CALL IT ELITISM! THERE IS NOTHING ELITE ABOUT OUR PRESIDENT…HE LOVES ALL PEOPLE…AND THE POOR AND SUFFERING AS MUCH AS HE LOVES HIS GOD,HIS FAMILY AND HIS COUNTRY. THE SHALLOW CHARACTER EXEMPLIFIED BY CERTAIN TALKING HEADS IN THE GOP WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO TRAVEL THE HIGH ROAD AND PUT PEOPLE BEFORE POPULARITY IN POLITICS!
Fareed has a terrific grasp on international affairs. I am gladdened by his support and acknowledgment that our president did the right thing at the right time. Yahoo Fareed. Oh wait, Yahoooooooo PBHO.
And, he did it in record time! It didn’t take him very long to let Mubarak know that he needed to change, and it didn’t take him long to let the Egyptian people know that he was firmly in their corner. The politicians, pundits, PL, and frustrati will never fully understand that it’s possible to effect change without waging another war, without bombastic rhetoric, and without further inflaming a potentially volatile situation. PBO let his principles lead him, and it led to meaningful change in Egypt—change we can believe in.
Spot on majii. I believe it is a part of his spirit as an African American. As a black man he has experienced the reality of being considered less than others. It makes him a champion of those who need to be lifted.
After listening to all of the armchair pundits and gasbags who knew exactly what President Obama should have said when and how he should have said it, it is a pleasure to see such a reasoned analysis from Fareed Zakaria. He just makes sense. I think he is the only “real” journalist on CNN.
A reasonable voice….Thank you Fareed, you are both a rare and good thing.

thank you for recognizing how deftly and swiftly President Obama has handled Mubarak 😀
those pundits can suck it 😡

Your comments are on point. I so agree!
