red alert

The Guardian: “I saw a piece in the New York Times claiming that the red Alexander McQueen dress Michelle Obama wore to last week’s state dinner for President Hu Jintao of China “sent out a number of signals. Fortunately, they were not mixed.” But what, precisely, were these signals?” Adam, by email

That she likes red? And she likes long dresses? And she’s fond of Alexander McQueen? Really, Adam, fashion isn’t quite as difficult to fathom as you seem to think. Or isn’t it . . . ?

Let us look at this from the perspective of someone who perceives conspiracy in the most seemingly innocent of places. I speak, of course, of Fox News’s highly imitable Glenn Beck. So give me a second while I don Beck’s famous glasses so I can see the world through his eyes.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, what a terrifying world this is! Communists and Nazis beset me on all sides! And, oh my God, Michelle Obama’s dress! You know who else liked to wear red? Communists. Kill your grandparents and take your money.

And do you know who also wears long dresses? Fanatical Muslim women who want to bomb your house. And Alexander McQueen! Do you know who he was friends with? Kate Moss. And what was Kate Moss once caught doing? Taking drugs. Oh my God, the signals that dress is sending are that Michelle Obama is a communist fanatical Muslim who likes to freebase! America, save yourself!

🙂

Wasn’t it Oscar de la Renta who said something bad about the dress?

Frak you Oscar. Michelle was stunning, and you didn’t dress her.

The green-eyed monstah has possessed poor Oscar. Michelle won’t wear his frumpy looking clothes. Buahahahahahahaaaaaa!!! I’m sobbing for him.

Oscar can join the other designers who hate that the FL is not buying and wearing clothing designed by them. I’m black, and one of the most asinine things I read on Huffpo in 2009 was the howling from black designers who thought that the FL should have been wearing their designs or looking to them for fashion advice. Michelle is like me in that I buy what I like, and what I think looks good on me. I’m not so focused on who designed the garment or the race of the designer. I just like what I like, and I don’t care if the haters don’t like it. I like Michelle’s style, and I ignore the critics because their criticism shouts a loud message of, “Why is she ignoring ME, doesn’t she KNOW who I am!!!” None of them would give her a first or second look if she weren’t the First Lady of the USA, and they know it.

they are crazy. anyone who knows anything about Asia knows that RED is a very positive color for that part of the world.

I look at our beautiful First Lady in that daring, yet elegant dress, filling it out wonderfully and doing this country proud and I smile.

    but haterz gotta hate.

Don’t spend any of your time or thoughts on the ones that live by hating. Protect your joy and positive energy from evil. Hold on to that feeling of pride and wear your smile.

I am a communist, fanatical Muslim, catholic, Nazi, fanciest, Kenyan (I forgot what else) who likes to wear red just b/c I look good in it! (My husband thinks that I look good in red that is!)

Very funny read, Chip. Something to brighten up my bone chilling, house-bound Sunday afternoon. 🙂

Our First Family went all out for the President of China, they made me proud to be an American. To show so much respect and hospitality to another World Leader. The RED Dress said it all, the First Lady wrapped in a silk banner saying Welcome to the American People’s House.

Hachikō…..you stay warn and cozy now. I was KS woman on Kos back in the old days and loved your posts but am so happy to be here and have no intention of going back. England is getting it’s snips in there fearing that they are really going to get a Glenn Beck type character if Murdoch get’s him way. I wish there was a way to stop that man.

I absolutely loved the Alexander McQeen red and black dress. It reminds me of a jacket I have in black-gray which looks like Chinese script on it. I work in a very large multi-international medical environment and asked a Chinese friend what it said and she said….nothing. It was just part of the design. lol

THE FIRST LADY WAS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL…SHE ALWAYS IS AND SHE TOPS OFF EVERY FASHION COORDINATED APPEARANCE WITH THE MOST IMPORTANT INGREDIENT…’GRACE.’ AS FOR GLENN BECK…A WRAP AROUND JACKET AND NO PASS ON WEEKENDS WOULD SERVE HIM WELL…MOSTLY BECAUSE HE’S NOT WELL!

Humor is such a great way to reflect back to us the absurdity we are capable of.

Oscar De La Renta is not conducting himself in a very becoming manner, I doubt his whining is doing much to promote his opportunities to dress Michelle. I think our FLOTUS makes her own fashion decisions, and I think she appreciates an edgier, younger look.
He can dress the wives of “old money” and wall street, America’s ruling class….rich, stiff and full of themselves.

Some days I just get worn out with all the trival pettiness that surrounds us. The media seems to function solely for the purpose of exploitation…..gas bags, they deserve to be mocked.
