Bunky Echo-Hawk, a Native American artist, created a work of art entitled “Barack Black Eagle: He Who Helps People Throughout the Land,” which was displayed during the inaugural festivities. Obama was given the name by a Crow family who adopted him into the tribe when he visited the Crow Nation in May 2008.
President Obama has a Crow Nation Indian name: One Who Helps People Throughout the Land.
While the president told today’s White House Tribal Nations Conference that he is honored by the tribute, he joked that wife Michelle Obama suggested an alternate name: “One Who Isn’t Picking Up His Shoes and His Socks.”
He retold the story of being on the campaign trail and being adopted by the Crow Nation. His Crow name means “one who helps people throughout the land (the audience applauded). Michelle, when told of his newly given Crow name, said he should be named “one who doesn’t pick up his shoes or socks”. President Obama said he likes the Crow name better.
