Bloomberg: The number of U.S. workers filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly declined last week, pointing to a labor market that is on the mend.
Applications for jobless insurance payments decreased by 3,000 to 420,000, the lowest in three weeks, Labor Department figures showed today. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News projected an increased in claims to 425,000, according to the median forecast.
….“The recent signs have been pretty consistent in that they’ve shown some modest improvement” in the labor market, said Ryan Wang, an economist at HSBC Securities USA. “It still remains a challenge to generate the number of jobs required to lower the unemployment rate.”
