stiff upper lip

President Barack Obama walks to his car with Secret Service Agents after a game of basketball with friends and aides on November 26,  at Fort McNair in Washington, DC

If someone elbowed the President in the mouth they should be forced to listen to the audio version of Sarah ‘North Korea’s Best Buddy’ Failin’s new book 😐

Several times

Newsflash: He needed 12 stitches on that wound 😦

President Obama had his lip treated with 12 stitches after he was hit by the elbow of one of the players joining him in a post-Thanksgiving basketball game.

” After being inadvertently hit with an opposing player’s elbow in the lip while playing basketball with friends and family, the President received 12 stitches today administered by the White House Medical Unit,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said in a statement. “They were done in the doctor’s office located on the ground floor of the White House.”

The pool adds: “The medical unit that treated Obama used a smaller filament than typically used, which increases the number of stitches but makes a tighter stitch and results in a smaller scar. Obama was given a local anesthetic while receiving the stitches.”

Just wait til America’s North Korean ‘allies’ hear about this, they’ll nuke that elbow

President Barack Obama, with an ice pack over his mouth, looks out the second floor window of the White House during the arrival of the official White House Christmas tree

The culprit unveiled!

Politico: The player who elbowed President Obama in the lip during a basketball game on Friday was Rey Decerega, the director of programs for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, the White House said.

“I learned today the president is both a tough competitor and a good sport,” Decerega said in a statement. “I enjoyed playing basketball with him this morning. I’m sure he’ll be back out on the court again soon.”

Obama’s upper lip was treated with 12 stitches after he was hit in the fifth of five games he was playing with family and friends, including Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Reggie Love and Obama’s nephew Avery Robinson.

Decerega “turned into POTUS, who was playing defense, to take a shot when the elbow hit the President in the mouth,” the White House said.

Hey, where were “the guys with guns”?

Setting a good example for us all – now I have to work off the huge amount of food I ate!!!

ps: Photo seems to capture that the President’s mouth was roughed up during the game – I wonder who is the friend or staff member who had to apologize to the President’s Secret Service Detail!

I think he looks mad because he’s hungry. Can’t imagine he had means to eat after that incident, and after an early day basketball jaunt….worked up an appetite for sure. So sorry for him, but at least he got to enjoy T’day dinner. He’ll be fine. Love me some President Obama!

I think it was Avery Robinson. I saw him chuckling.

Hope President Obama feels better and recovers very soon.

I think that although it is not their fault, the Secret Service Agents on duty today must feel a bit bummed out because it seems that the faces around POTUS today are not the usual Secret Service Detail (a back up team from what I can tell of the immediate faces). Of course anyone who believes in the laws of nature expects things to happen when you desparately wish them away

Now the photo of the “culprit” got another ‘ouch’ out of me because I can now imagine the verocity of the elbow from one player to the President’s lip

I love your title Chipsticks! Very British!

    Heal fast Pres Obama!

Hiya CR, I thought the definition for ‘stiff upper lip’ was perfect under the circumstances: “Fortitude in the face of adversity”!

I’m just thankful that the President has the weekend off and doesn’t, say, have the State of the Union speech tomorrow …. that wouldn’t be good. 😐

No doubt he’ll have a bunch of people telling him now that he should give up basketball – I hope he tells them where to go! 😉

  14. November 26, 2010 at 7:58 pm

I hope President Obama is resting comfortably.

I was thinking that it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. After all basketball is a contact sport.
However, the guy who played with him clearly was not one of the regulars and forgot who he was playing basketball with.

I really hope President Obama’s lip heals quickly so we can all see his beautiful smile again.

The culprit sounds like an ungracious and arrogant piece of you know what…Not even a hint of an apology, just sass and terribly misplaced foolish machismo…

Well we know who’s not gonna be invited to play ball with the Prez again. Rest up and heal fast Mr Prez.

  16. November 27, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Well our President isn’t resting, as he should be. He is right now at Howard University as a spectator, along with the rest of the family watching his brother-in-law Creg Robinson coach Oregon St vs. Howard U. Nothing holds him down long :).

The president is a guy and a very competitivie, trash talking one at that. He shook it off and went out to Craig’s game as he should. During the last days of the campaign his staff would not let him play because of the proability of this happening and they did not want him to have a fat lip or some other basketball injury before the big day. I like that he is such a guy. I always say that those fools who call him obambi, or Carville (the jealous hater) who said that the Prez needed to grow a pair, have obviously never seen him play basketball. This is a tough man who never quits, is never intimidated, and who one plays to win; whether in a game, getting the woman he wanted who refused him several times before finally going out with him, or getting health care passed. This is not the guy to mess with! He will also be re-elected. The pundits will once again have egg on their faces.
